Mainland’s Sofia Day PRs again, shatters Atlantic County 800 record for 4th time this year at Boston Nationals!!!!!!

Mainland Regional sophomore Sofia Day, in her 6th lifetime 800, ran the 7th-fastest time in South Jerey history Saturday at Boston Indoor Nationals in Brighton, Mass.

Day won the third section of the 800 in 2:14.25, passing another New Jersey half-miler, Clemmie Lilley of Rumson-Fair Haven, on the final lap. Lilley finished in 2:14.62.

Day closed in 32.34 for her final 200 and 15.84 for her final 100!

She broke her own Atlantic County record of 2:15.59 from her win at Group 3 states last month at the Bubble.

The Atlantic County record before this year was 2:18.10 by Nijgia Snapp of Oakcrest at 2008 South Jerey Group 4 sectionals at the Bubble. Day broke that four times – 2:17.76 in her first-ever 800 at Ocean Breeze in January, 2:17.71 at sectionals, 2:15.59 at states and now 2:14.25.

Day’s time is fastest by a South Jersey girl in the 800 in 10 years, since Carly Pettipaw of Lenape ran 2:14.12 at the 2013 Group 4 state meet, also at the Bubble. Cherokee senior Kelsey Niglio ran 2:14.27 last weekend at the Meet of Champions at the Bubble.

OCEAN CITY’S SOPHIA CURTIS DEMOLISHES S.J. RECORD THREE TIMES WITH #2 TRIPLE JUMP IN STATE HISTORY AT BOSTON NATIONALS!!!!!!

Ocean City junior Sophia Curtis shattered the South Jersey indoor triple jump record Saturday three times Saturday on her way to 3rd place and All-America honors at Boston Indoor Nationals in Brighton, Mass.

In a monster series in which her average jump would have been the 8th-best jump in state history, Curtis finished her series with a massive 41-3 1/4, a mark second in New Jersey history only to Mount Olive’s legendary Katurah Orji, a two-time Olympian, the current U.S. outdoor record holder and former U.S. indoor record holder. Orji jumped 44-2 at 2014 Armory Nationals.

After a 38-3 ¼ opener and a PR 39-5 ¾ on her second attempt, Curtis leaped 40-2 on her third attempt of the trials, smashing the South Jersey record of 40-1 ½ set by Atlantic City’s Claudine Smith at this meet in 2019 when it was held at the Armory.

She popped a 39-11 ¼ on her 4th jump, her first attempt of the finals, before breaking her own South Jersey record with a monster 40-9 jump on her fifth attempt. She destroyed that mark with a 41-3 1/4 on her final attempt of the competition.

That moved her briefly into 2nd place before India Alix of Klein High in Spring, Texas, hit 41-7 3/4 on her final jump to take the lead. Moments later, Juliette Laracuente-Huebner of Marengo (Ohio) Highland bumped Alix into 2nd with a 42-0 1/2.

Incredible competition, and Curtis was in the middle of it with the five-best jumps of her life and the three-best jumps in South Jersey indoor history.

Curtis averaged 39-11 1/2 on her six jumps, and her average was more than a foot beyond her previous PR and only a couple inches off the previous South Jersey record. Her 41-3 ¼ would have ranked 7th among South Jersey boys this year.

Curtis also broke the state junior class record of 41-0 1/4 set by Orji at 2013 Armory Nationals. The previous South Jersey junior class mark was Curtis’s own 38-8.

Her 41-3 ¼ is No. 2 in South Jersey history indoors or out, behind only Smith’s 42-2 at the 2019 outdoor Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.

It looks like Curtis’s mark will put her at No. 8 on the U.S. Under-20 list. It also makes her the No. 58 American woman, according to the World Athletics rankings.

What a historic performance! One of the greatest in South Jersey track history!

Curtis came into the meet with an indoor PR of 38-8 from her 2nd-place finish at the Meet of Champions last Sunday at Ocean Breeze and a lifetime best of 38-8 ¾ as a sophomore at Padua Academy in Wilmington from the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Meet of Champions this past May at Salesianum School in Wilmington. This is Curtis’s first season competing for Ocean City.

Earlier this year, Curtis broke Cape May County records with 57.99 in the 400 and 8.33 in the 55-meter hurdles.

Cherokee girls race to #12 DMR in South Jersey history at Boston Nationals!!!!!!

Cherokee’s Megan Niglio, Madison Van Haren, Kelsey Niglio and Kerry O’Day ran the 12th-fastest distance medley in South Jersey history Friday night in Boston.

Cherokee won its section in 12:10.07, a time that held up for 10th-best overall Friday at Boston Nationals in Brighton, Mass. The Lady Chiefs ran unpressed and won their race by about 80 meters.

Sophomore Megan Niglio led off for Cherokee with a 3:45.02 split for 1,200 meters, and junior Madison Van Haren ran 58.94 for her 400 leg. Senior Kelsey Niglio ran 2:16.20 on the 800, and junior Kerry O’Day anchored in 5:09.56.

Cherokee now has the two-fastest times by South Jersey schools over the last six indoor seasons – 11:57.21 last year at Ocean Breeze Nationals (which is the same meet as this year’s Armory Nationals) and this 12:10.07.

The time is No. 6 in Burlington County history, behind Lenape in 2013, 2012, 2010 and 2015 and last year’s Cherokee team. Lenape and Cherokee are responsible for the nine-fastest indoor DMRs in Burlington County history.

Despite being ranked No. 7 nationally coming into the meet, Cherokee was not placed in the 11-team fast heat, where the Chiefs would have had the opportunity to race against other schools and not just the clock.

Next big DMR for this group will be on Day 2 of the 127th annual Penn Relays, late Friday afternoon on April 28 at Franklin Field.

Pennsauken does it again! 2nd in sprint medley at Boston Nationals with all-time S.J. #3 performance!!!!!!!!

An hour after running the 7th-fastest 800-meter relay in South Jersey history and fastest in 16 years, Pennsauken ran the 3rd-fastest sprint medley in the S.J. record book and fastest in 14 years.

Juniors Elijah Jennings and Bronze Whitmore and senior Premier Wynn and Bryce Tucker won the 7th of 10 heats in 3:29.31, and that time held up for 2nd place overall. Whitmore, Jennings and Wynn also ran on Pennsauken’s 4-by-2 team earlier in the afternoon.

Pennsauken’s time is No. 14 in state history.

That’s fastest by a South Jersey school since Washington Township ran 3:29.07 to win the 2009 National Scholastic Championships at the Armory. The only other faster time in South Jersey history is Vineland’s 3:27.60 with the team of Dale Coleman, Marcus Lee, Schafer Sherrer and Shannon Sherrer at the 2003 New Balance Games at the Armory. That stood as the state record for nine years.

Jennings and Whitmore came through in 45.61 for their 200 legs, and Wynn ran 48.52 for his 400 leg. Tucker anchored in 1:55.18.

Because its fastest time coming into the meet was a 3:37.65, Pennsauken was seeded in the 7th of 10 sections, which means it raced against schools it was clearly faster than.

Pennsauken won its section by more than 2 ½ seconds. The winning times in the next two sections were slower, but Seton Hall Prep of West Orange – which Pennsauken edged to win the Meet of Champions 4-by-4 on Sunday – ran faster in the final section, winning in 3:27.42.

Pennsauken’s previous school record for an indoor sprint med was 3:37.65 in January at the Bubble to win the Group 3 State Relays. Outdoors, Pennsauken has run 3:30.60 at the Willingboro Relays in 2010.

Pennsauken runs 7th-fastest 4×200 in South Jersey history at Boston Nationals!!!!!!

Pennsauken ran the fastest 800-meter relay by a South Jersey school in 16 years Friday at Boston Nationals.

The team of freshman KaRon Ali, junior Bronze Whitmore, junior Elijah Jennings and senior Premier Wynn ran 1:28.77 and placed 11th in a loaded field at The Track at New Balance in Brighton, Mass.

That’s fastest by a South Jersey school since Camden ran 1:28.48 at the 2007 Hispanic Games at the Armory.

It’s also No. 7 in South Jersey history and No. 18 in state history.

Despite running one of the fastest times in state history, Pennsauken missed advancing to the final by 10-100ths of a second.

Delsea grad Jake Nwosu just misses discus PR in early 2023 outdoor opener!!!!!!

We have our first outdoor result of the year!

Delsea graduate Jake Nwosu, a sophomore at Army West Point, threw 164-9 and placed 5th in the discus at the Beach Opener 2023 at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, Calif.

Nwosu only got off two legal throws – a 162-2 on his 1st attempt and the 164-9 on his 4th – but still missed his PR by less than four feet. Nwosu has a lifetime best of 168-8 from the West Point Twilight last April.

Nwosu did PR in the hammer throw with a 163-3 for 11th place. His previous PR was a 157-4 from the Lehigh Invite in Bethlehem last April.

Despite losing his senior year to COVID, Nwosu threw 173-3 at Delsea when he won Group 2 sectionals at Delesea in 2019 on his way to the state Group 2 title.

Shaelan McNally, Megan Niglio, Kerry O’Day all run fast PRs in Meet of Champions 1,600!!!!!!

Before we get started with nationals, one last note from the Meet of Champions.

Three South Jersey girls finished in the top 12 and all three ran PRs.

Thanks to a 34.69 final lap, Paul VI junior Shaelan McNally placed 7th in 5:01.74, Cherokee sophomore Megan Niglio finished just behind her in 9th with a 5:03.21 and her teammate, junior Kerry O’Day, ran 5:04.01 for 12th.

McNally’s previous indoor PR was a 5:05.60 from the Bubble last month and her overall PR was 5:02.10 from the South Jersey Elite at Delsea in May.

Niglio had an indoor and overall PR of 5:08.16 from last year’s state Group 4 meet at the Bubble, and her fastest time this year had been a 5:08.56, also at states.

And O’Day PR’d for the second meet in a row, breaking her lifetime best indoors or out of 5:07.07 from states last month. Her PR before that was a 5:11.30 last May at Holmdel.

They now rank 21st, 26th and 31st on the all-time South Jersey list. Niglio and O’Day are the 4th and 5th Cherokee girtls to break 5:05 indoors.

Interestingly, the two-fastest indoor Paul VI milers in school history are returning in 2023. Macy Huber ran 5:12.76 at states, making her the No. 1 freshman in South Jersey (and No. 3 in the state).

Paul VI’s outdoor school record for 1,600 meters remains Dawn Cody’s 4:55.9 when she placed 2nd to Michelle Rowen of Washington Township at the 1982 Meet of Champions at Princeton’s Palmer Stadium.

McNally, Niglio and O’Day will all racing this weekend. In Boston, Niglio and O’Day are both on Cherokee’s 4-mile relay team and 3,200-meter relay team. McNally will be in New York racing the 5,000.
