In just her third collegiate 400, Arianna Sharpe ran the fastest indoor 400 ever by a South Jersey high school graduate and narrowly missed the Auburn school record.

Sharpe, who ran for Paulsboro and Clayton along with her twin sisters Amirah and Ariel, ran a huge PR 52.42 at the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson.

That’s No. 2 in Auburn history behind only a 52.24 run by Joanna Atkins at the 2011 SEC meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

It’s also the fastest indoor 400 ever run by a South Jersey woman. The previous record was set on March 12, 1988, by Edgewood garduate Denise Mitchell, who ran 53.02 in Oklahoma City. Seneca’s Michelle Brown is next on that all-time South Jersey indoor list at 53.47 in Indianapolis in 1997.

Sharpe is now tied for the No. 1 ranking among all NCAA Division 1 freshmen with Christina Mallard of USC, who ran 52.42 at the same meet as sharpe. Sharpe placed ahead of Mallard based on their times to the 1,000th of a second – Sharpe ran 52.417 and Mallard 52.420 – but for ranking purposes they share a ranking.

On the 2023 NCAA Division 1 list, Sharpe is No. 20 and on the U.S. women’s list she’s No. 16. She’s No. 41 in the world and No. 16 in the U.S. – tied with Mallard on all those lists.

World Athletics does not list a birthday for Sharpe, so it’s unknown whether she’s eligible for the U.S. Under-20 Championships. The next World Under-20 Championships isn’t until 2024.

Sharpe’s previous PR was a 53.01 at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock in January. Before this year, her high school PRs were 54.36 outdoors at Franklin Field in June and 56.09 indoors at the Armory last March.

Her time also makes her 4th-fastest ever from New Jersey indoors in the 400 behind Olympic gold medalists Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic and Athing Mu of Trenton and World Championsips gold medalist Mikele Barber of Montclair.

Amirah Sharpe also PR’d at the Tiger’s Paw Invitational with a 53.80. That 53.80 is No. 6 in Auburn history. Both have been running on Auburn’s 4-by-4, which has a season-best 3:36.05.

Four of the top seven girls on Auburn’s all-time indoor 400 list are South Jersey natives: Arianna Sharpe at No. 2, Amirah Sharpe at No. 6, Highland’s Eusheka Bartley with a 53.29 in 1996 and her twin sister Nichole Bartley at 54.22 in the No. 7 spot from 1997.
Arianna Sharpe’s 52.42 makes her No. 10 all-time among New Jersey natives and No. 5 among South Jersey girls.

Ariel Sharpe also ran an indoor 400 PR this year with a 58.14 earlier this month in a meet in Nashville.

Sharpe is now 4th-fastest ever from New Jersey indoors in the 400 behind Olympic gold medalists Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic and Athing Mu of Trenton and World Championsips gold medalist Mikele Barber of Montclair.

Because of forecast snow in North Jersey and New York Tuesday evening, the 88th annual Eastern States Championships have been rescheduled for Wednesday.

The meet was originally scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the 168th Street Armory. No start time has been announced for the rescheduled meet on Wednesday.

A winter weather advisory has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday for New York City and portions of North Jerey, according to the National Weather Service.

There is an Easterns web site here: http://www.jacobbrown.com/Easterns/easterns.htm … but parts of it (including my own all-time performance lists) haven’t been updated in a decade so I can’t vouch for anything on there.

Gabriel Moronta is an intermediate hurdler, so he almost runs the flat 400 outdoors and until this month the Pleasantville graduate and Mississippi State sophomore hadn’t run one indoors.

But earlier this month at Clemson, he dropped down from the 800 to the 400 and unleashed a monster performance in a loaded race at the Tiger Paw Invitational.

How about 46.24?

That’s the fastest ever by a South Jersey high school graduate in an indoor 400.

Believe it or not, it was the first open 400 Moronta has run as a collegian. His previous PR dates back to the 2020 state indoor state meet at the Bubble, which he won in 48.79. That was actually the last official flat 400 he ran. Until now.

His 46.24 ranks 4^th in Mississippi State history (3^rd-fastest on a legal track) and fastest in seven years, since Alfred Larry ran 46.13 in 2016 on an over-sized track at Notre Dame, and fastest on a legal track since Tavaris Tate set the school record of 45.80 at the 2010 Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville.

It places him No. 27 in the U.S. this year, No. 48 in the world and No. 29 in NCAA Division 1.

His time is 7th-fastest ever by a New Jersey native in an indoor 400. The previous record for fastest 400 indoors by a South Jersey quarter-miler was 46.28 set by Woodbury’s Darrell Bush of LSU at the 2014 SEC Championships in College Station, Texas.

Eight other South Jersey runners have broken 47 seconds indoors, and a total of 16 runners from New Jersey have broken 47 seconds.

Unfortunately, Moronta didn’t race at SECs this past weekend either in the 400 or the 1,600-meter relay. Hopefully nothing serious because if he’s running 46.24 flat he’s going to fly in the intermediates outdoors.

The first meet on Mississippi State’s outdoor schedule is the Miami Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables on March 17.

Moronta has run 51.38 for the intermediates and 1:49.33 for 800 meters outdoors.

Some 20 South Jersey schools – Atlantic County Tech, Clayton, Cherokee, Cherry Hill West, Clearview, Delsea, Deptford, Eastern, Egg Harbor Township, Glassboro, Kingsway, Lenape, Mainland Regional, Pennsauken, Rancocas Valley, Sterling, Timber Creek, Triton, Washington Township and Winslow Township – are listed in the entries for this year’s Easterns, which is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Armory.

Over the next 12 hours I’ll be posting lists of all-time Easterns winners going back to the 1930s as well as my all-time top-20 performance lists.

Moorestown’s Kate Inglis, a sophomore at Catholic University in Washington, shattered the school record at 3,000 meters Saturday at the Landmark Conference Championships at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.

Inglis placed 2nd in 10:08.96, breaking the school record by nearly 17 seconds. The previous mark was 10:25.84 set by Kiera Lyons at the 2019 NYU Invitational at the Armory.

Scranton senior Jessica Hoffman won the race in 10:03.45, breaking her own meet record of 10:20.69 that she set last year as well as the Landmark Conference overall record of 10:11.76 that she set last month.

Inglis ran lower than both of Hoffman’s previous records in what is now the 2nd-fastest 3,000 ever recorded by a Landmark Conference runner.

Inglis’s previous PR was a 10:16.36 from a meet earlier this month at Boston University. Before this month, she had never broken 10:30 for 3,000 meters.

Hoffman, from Watchung Hills High in Somerset County, has won eight consecutive Landmark Conference championship races, including cross country, indoors and outdoors, and was an All-America in cross country this past fall.

Inglis’s time is the equivalent of a 10:53.84 for 3,200 meters. Her high school PR was 11:50.38 from the 2018 Burlington County Open at Rancocas Valley. Inglis didn’t run indoor track at Moorestown.

You have to go back to 1934 to find the first South Jersey winer in the Easterns boys meet. You don’t have to go back quite so far to find the first girls winner – only 43 years!

In 1980, the inaugural edition of girls Easterns in Boston, Willingboro teammates Michelle Glover and Carol Lewis were both winners, Glover in the 55 and Lewis in the long jump.

It was 80 years ago when Browning Ross from Woodbury High School and William Mitchell of Collingswood won gold medals at the 1943 Easterns, then known as the National AAU Championships and held at the old Madison Square Garden at 50th Street and 8th Avenue.

About 6,000 fans gathered that night to watch the 10th annual meet, and they saw Ross win the mile in 4:37.5 and Mitchell place 1st in the hurdles in 7.8.

Collingswood hasn’t had an Easterns winner since. Woodbury didn’t until 2012, when Anthony Averett won the long jump and Darrell Bush won the 200.

The boys Easterns traces its lineage back to the old AAU meets at Madison Square Garden in the early 1930s. The girls meet is relatively younger, starting out in Boston in 1980 and continuing there until merging with the boys meet in 1996 under the auspices of the Bergen County Track Coaches Association.

The boys and girls meets have been held together at the Armory since 1998.

Northern Burlington senior Samuel Thomas broke the Burlington County 60-meter dash record Saturday and moved into the all-time South Jersey top-10 in the 55.

Thomas, racing at the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational on Saturday, placed 2nd to Ricardo Cooper of Calvert Hall College High in Towson, Md., in the 60, Cooper winning the race in 6.82 and Thomas placing 2nd in 6.91.

En route, they were officially timed in 6.34 and 6.42 for 55 meters. In the trials, Cooper ran 6.91 and Thomas 6.99 with en route times of 6.42 and 6.50.

Thomas’s 6.91 broke the Burlington County 60-meter dash record of 7.00 set in 2008 by Daequan Prince of Bordentown and moved into the No. 4 spot on the all-time South Jersey list.

The 60 is only run rarely on the high school level, but Thomas’s 55-meter dash time of 6.42 is No. 9 in South Jersey history and fastest by any South Jersey sprinter in 14 years. In 2009, Glassboro’s James Brown ran 6.38 at the Meet of Champions and Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd ran 6.39 at South Jersey Group 3 sectionals, both at the Bubble.

Thomas’s 55 time is 2nd-fastest in New Jersey this year and fastest by a South Jersey sprinter. Ewing’s Mekhi Stafford ran 6.38 also at Ocean Breeze in January.

It’s also 3rd-fastest in Burlington County history behind two Willingboro greats – Kenny Reyonlds ran 6.36 at 1986 Easterns at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym and Carl Lewis ran 6.37 in 1979 (for 60 yards) but I haven’t figured out where.

The fastest time from all the state meets was 6.44 run by Seton Hall Prep’s Xavier Donaldson in the Parochial A race. That’s the difference between the Bubble and the Ocean Breeze track, where the Meet of Champions will be held next Saturday.

Thomas’s previous 55 PR was 6.50, which he’s run twice – at sectionals and in the trials Saturday at Ocean Breeze. He was 2nd at the state Group 3 meet in 6.51 behind Bergenfield’s Xavier Hayletts, who ran 6.47.

Thomas is the No. 4 seed in the M-of-C behind Donaldson, Hayletts and Southern Regional’s Cole Carmer (6.51).

The improvement Thomas has displayed this year is remarkable. He only ran one 55 last winter and didn’t break seven seconds (7.02 at the Bubble). But he had a breakthrough outdoor season, running 21.74 and 10.78

Northern’s school record before this year was 6.69 set by Said Mustapha at the 2008 Group 3 sectionals at the Bubble.
