DEPTFORD’S MASON HENRY WINS MEET OF CHAMPIONS POLE VAULT WITH #6 CLEARANCE IN SOUTH JERSEY HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deptford senior Mason Henry, needing to clear a pole vault PR to take over the lead, cleared a lifetime-best 15-6 to win the vault at the Meet of Champions at Pennsauken.

Henry, who had cleared 15-6 indoors but never outdoors, was behind Hunterdon Central’s Ryan Shalley when the bar moved up to 15-6. Shalley was clean through 15-0 and Henry had a miss at 15-0.

But Henry cleared 15-6 on his 1st attempt, Shalley didn’t get over the bar and Henry became Deptford’s 3rd Meet of Champions winner.

Henry’s 15-6 equals 6th-best in South Jersey history and equals the 2nd-best vault ever by a South Jersey athlete at the Meet of Champions. Ryan Merlino won the 2024 meet at 16-0. Ed Frey of Cinnaminson also cleared 2025 last year when he placed 2nd. The 15-6 is tied for 8th-best in meet history.

Deptford’s only other individual winners at the Meet of Champions are Ken Manahan in the discus in 1976 and Bruce Owens in the 100 in 2004. The 4-by-1 team won in 2018.

ANOTHER ONE FOR NATALIE DUMAS!!!!!!!! SHE WINS 3RD STRAIGHT MEET OF CHAMPIONS 400 WITH 3RD-FASTEST TIME IN MEET HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Natalie Dumas ran away with her 2nd Meet of Champions title of the game and 7th of her track career Wednesday, running the 3rd-fastest 400 time in meet history at Pennsauken.

Dumas, who won the 400-meter hurdles earlier and will race the 800 later, won the 400 in 52.14, her second season-best time of the day. It was her fastest 400 since she set the state record of 51.14 at West Philly Nationals last June, the 6th-fastest time in U.S. scholastic history.

Dumas won the 400 Wednesday by 15 meters over sophomore Savanah Clark of Montclair Kimberly Academy.

With the 800 still to come, Dumas has now seven Meet of Champions individual titles, 2nd-most in Meet of Champions history. North Hunterdon distance ace Jodie Bilotta won eight from 1986 through 1988.

Dumas is now the first girl ever from South Jersey to win two events three year in a row at a Meet of Champions.

Kingsway sophomore Noemi Haller ran a PR 55.03 and placed 5th and Burlington Township senior Laila Fairweather ran 55.86 for 9th.

Dumas is the third girl to win three straight Meet of Champions 400 titles. Seneca’s Michelle Brown won three in a row from 2008 through 2010 and Olivia Baker won four straight from 2011 through 2014.

AUDUBON’S RILEY FAYER BLAZES 4TH-FASTEST MEET OF CHAMPIONS 1,600 EVER BY A SOUTH JERSEY GIRL, #11 IN S.J. HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Her time is No. 11 on the all-time South Jersey list. Her time is fastest by a South Jersey girl at the Meet of Champions since Haddonfield’s Briana Gess ran 4:48.05 to win the 2015 race at South Plainfield.

Only three other South Jersey girls have run faster at a Meet of Champions: Erin Donohue of Haddonfield, Ocean City’s Renee Tomlin and Washington Township’s Michelle Rowen.

Fayer recorded some wild negative splits, out in 2:30.06 [73.29 / 76.77] but back in 2:22.43 [71.87 / 70.71].

DELSEA’S HANNAH NUHFER WINS ANOTHER MEET OF CHAMPIONS DISCUS TITLE, RECORDS FOUR-BEST THROWS IN MEET HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delsea senior Hannah Nuhfer won her 2nd straight Meet of Champions discus title Wednesday at Pennsauken and surpassed the meet record four times.

Nuhfer, the U.S. champion and state record holder at 184-5, threw 180-3 on her 2nd attempt and also had a 180-0 on her 5th throw, a 177-0 on her 3rd, and a 172-6 on her final throw. Those are the four-best throws in Meet of Champions history.

The previous meet record was 171-7 by Layla Giordano of Old Tappan in 2024.

Nuhfer is the first South Jersey girl to repeat a M-of-C discus title since Cherokee’s Jessica Woodard, a 2022 World Championship finalist, won three in a row from 2011 through 2013.

Nuhfer, who also recorded a 166-4 on her 4th throw , had the five-best throws of the competition.

Glassboro’s record-setting tandem of senior Sunsarai Moore and junior Virginia Tarasevich placed 3rd and 4th, Moore with a 152-2 on her final throw and Tarsevich with a PR 147-0 – No. 10 in South Jersey history. They are the only teammates in New Jersey history to both throw at least 145 feet in the same meet, and they’ve now done it twice in a row.

NATALIE DUMAS WINS 6TH MEET OF CHAMPIONS TITLE WITH FASTEST 400 HURDLES TIME IN U.S. THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Natalie Dumas began her final Meet of Champions by winning her 3rd consecutive 400-meter hurdles state title Wednesday afternoon at Pennsauken.

Dumas had to hold off Union Catholic junior Sydney Chadwick, who gave Dumas a valiant challenge.

Dumas won the race in 57.04 and Chadwick was 2nd in 57.39. Only four-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin has run faster in Meet of Champions history.  Those are the two-fastest times in the U.S. this year.

Dumas’s time is her fastest since she won West Philly Nationals in 55.99 last June at Franklin Field, 6th-fastest in U.S. high school history. Chadwick’s time is 4th-fastest in New Jersey history, behind McLaughlin, Dumas and Winslow’s Krystal Cantey, who ran 56.83 at 2005 Greensboro Nationals.

Dumas has now won 24 consecutive 400-meter hurdles races and hasn’t lost since her first race as a sophomore on April 13, 2024, when she was 2nd to Danya Spoor of Oak Knoll School in Summit at the Lenape Invitational. She’s won two national titles since then.

With the 400 and 800 remaining, she’s now won six Meet of Champions individual titles, 2nd-most in Meet of Champions history. North Hunterdon distance ace Jodie Bilotta won eight from 1986 through 1988.

Dumas is the third girl to win three consecutive Meet of Champions 400-meter hurdles races. Andrea Johnson of Plainfield won three in a row from 1981 through 1983 and world record holder and four-time Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin won four straight from 2014 through 2017.

Dumas is the 6th South Jersey girl to win three straight MoC titles in the same event, following Willingboro’s Carol Lewis [long jump from 1978 through 1981], Erin Donohue of Haddonfield [1,600 from 1999 through 2001], Michelle Brown of Seneca [400 from 2008 through 2010], Cherokee’s Jessica Woodard [discus from 2011 through 2013], Haddonfield’s Briana Gess [1,600 from 2014 through 2016].

Sianni Wynn of Pennsauken has a chance to add her name to the list in both the 100 and 200 later Wednesday on her home track and Dumas has a chance to add a second event to that list later in the day in the 400.

Winslow junior Cinniya Robinson placed 3rd with a PR 59.80 – 7th-fastest in South Jersey history – and Pennsauken sophomore Hope Edwards ran 1:00.30 for 4th.

Lindenwold’s Egypt Bolan wins 2nd consecutive Meet of Champions high jump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lindenwold senior Egypt Bolan cleared 5-8 to win the Meet of Champions high jump title Wednesday at Pennsauken, becoming the first South Jersey girl to win the high jump in back-to-back Meet of Champions.

Bolan, the national outdoor champion last year at 5-10 ¾, won last year’s Meet of Champions at 5-9. She clinched the title Wednesday when she was the only competitor to clear 5-8. She was clean at 5-4, 5-6 and 5-8

With the win secured, Bolan had the bar moved up to 5-10 ¼, which would have broken the meet record of 5-10 shared by six athletes, most recently Timber Creek’s Tierra Hooker in 2019. She missed three attempts.

Bolan is the first girl to repeat in the high jump since Fiona Paladino of Montgomery in 2010 and 2011.

South Jersey has dominated the M-of-C high jump, winning six of the last titles – Hooker in 2019, Clayton’s Alanna Woolfolk in 2021 and 2023, Williamstown’s Addison Inge in 2024 and Bolan the last two years.

Other South Jersey winners: Erirn Halpan of Cherry Hill East in 1987, Kim Stoll of Holy Spirit in 1993, Brooke Minor of Woodbury in 2001, Briana Gray of Haddon Heights in 2005, Anna Cook of Florence in 2006 and Priscilla Frederick of Paul VI in 2007.

Carly Godfrey’s 2:08 anchor leads Ocean City to 2nd place in Meet of Champions 4-by-8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ocean City girls, led by a sizzling anchor split by junior Carly Godfrey, ran the 10th-fastest 4-by-8 in South Jersey history Wednesday at the Meet of Champions at Pennsauken.

Junior Lillian Flora, sophomore Riley Tolson, junior Peighton Clemens and Godfrey ran 9:12.78, finishing just behind Cranford, which won with a 9:11.10.

Flora led off in 2:17.34, Tolson split 2:18.62, Clemens ran 2:28.59 and Godfrey anchored in 2:08.27.

That’s the 3rd-fastest non-winning time in meet history and fastest by a South Jersey school this year.

Cherokee took 3rd in 9:15.27 with senior Madeline Meder [2:19.56], sophomore Erin Healy [2:21.29], senior Alyssa Suriano [2:19.39] and senior Sofia Recinto [2:13.65].

The Delano Mann story: South Jersey’s most improbable state champion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the most fun stories to come out of this past weekend was the state championship by Bishop Eustace junior Delano Mann.

Mann came into the weekend with a 100-meter dash PR of 11.28 from a meet at TCNJ in Ewing in April. That made him the No. 7 seed in the Parochial B race at Stockton in Galloway.

His wind-legal PR was 11.38 from a meet at Deptford in May. His fastest time last year was 11.76 at Cherokee.

So how did he become a state champion?

By dropping his PR to 10.87 with a legal 0.6 wind reading and leading all qualifiers in the prelims Friday and then dropping to 10.85 in the final with 0.2 wind and winning by two meters over Wynston Ditchfield-Agboh of Newark Academy of Livingston in the final.

That’s a more than half second PR in non wind-aided races in one day, which is unheard of in the 100. But Mann saved his best for last, recording the first win in any meet in his track career in the state final.

His previous-best finish was a 2nd place in the high jump in a batch meet at Cherokee with a 5-6 clearance.

Mann became the first Eustace sprinter to win a state title at 100 meters since Ed Nelms ran 11.23 to win Parochial B at Hub Stein Field in Plainfield in 1995, helping Eustace win the team title.

Previous Eustace state champions in the 100 are John Shirk in 1979, Rick Saquil in 1980 and Joe Vogt in 1985.

If it seems like Mann came out of nowhere, he really did. He doesn’t run indoors. He hasn’t run a 200 all year. He didn’t run in the Camden County meet and he placed 17th in the Olympic Conference 100. In his last race before states, he ran 11.58 at Haddonfield.

But there he was, crossing the line well clear of the field Friday, becoming the first Eustace underclassman to win a state title on the track in a quarter of a century, since junior Patrick Stevenson won the 1,600 in 2001, also at Hub Stein Field.

Mann’s 10.85 makes him the 3rd-fastest junior in South Jersey this year, behind Williamstown’s Joshua George-Oyewole [10.74] and Timber Creek’s Timothy Whitaker [10.80].

He earned the No. 10 seed for the Meet of Champions Wednesday at Pennsauken and is one of six South Jersey sprinters among the top 10 seeds. Deptford senior Johann Hernandez is No. 4 [10.72], Cherry Hill East senior Tymir Gayle is No. 5 [10.76], Camden senior Jawan Brownlee No. 6 [10.76], Atlantic City senior Jaylen Day No. 7 [10.78]. and Winslow Township senior Quayd Hendryx No. 9 [10.83].
