SINCERE RHEA HURDLES TO #9 ALL-TIME N.J. AT SOUTH JERSEY INVITE!!!!

St. Augustine senior Sincere Rhea won the 110-meter high hurdles at the 28th annual South Jersey Invitational at Delsea Thursday night with a 13.98 in the final, just ahead of Deptford’s Naseem Smith, who gave him a heck of a race in the final.

What we’re going to focus on first is what Rhea did in the trials.

Rhea ran a personal-best and meet-record 13.68 in the trials, No. 9 in state history and No. 4 in South Jersey history. He lowered his PR and Atlantic County record from 13.74, which he ran at last year’s Meet of Champions.

Rhea, the indoor national champion, broke the meet FAT record of 13.91, set in 1997 by Delsea’s Sultan Tucker. Dwight Ruff of Camden ran 13.5 in 2001 (don’t ask why they were using hand times AFTER they started using FAT times).

We’ll get into Smith’s tremendous final later — his time is No. 4 in Gloucester County history — but for now we’ll focus on Rhea, who is only the third hurdler in meet history to win consecutive titles. Tucker won in 1994 and 1995 and Willingboro’s Isaac Williams won in 2011 and 2012.

Rhea’s time is No. 4 in the U.S. this year, according to the MileSplit database, behind Jamar Marshall of St. Mary’s High in Stockton, Calif. (13.56), Eli Morris of Jefferson High in Georgia (13.63) and Warren Williams of West High in Tracy, Calif. (13.63).

Rhea is now South Jersey’s fastest high hurdler in 20 years, since Danye Brown set the state record of 13.43 in 1999.
