Clayton’s Thomas Hampton records historic sprint double at S.J. Invite!!!!!

Clayton senior Thomas Hampton put together one heck of a sprint double Thursday night at the 28th annual South Jersey Invitational, running personal-bests of 10.75 in the 100 and 21.82 in the 200 at Delsea.

Hampton’s 200 time is No. 1 in the state this year, and his 100 time is No. 3, behind Rahmir Johnson of Bergen Catholic, who ran 21.64, and Nigel Mitchel of Red Bank, who ran 21.65.

Hampton is the first winner from Clayton in meet history, and he’s actually the first sprinter to sweep the 100 and 200 at the S.J.I. since Sterling Pierce of Rancocas Valley in 2015.

Hampton ran the 10.75 in the 100 trials and 10.83 in the final.

Surprisingly, only eight sprinters have won both the 100 and 200 in meet history. Here’s what that list looks like:

2019: Thomas Hampton (Clayton), 10.75q, 21.82
2015: Sterling Pierce (Rancocas Valley) 11.21, 22.27
2012: Fabian Santiago (Oakcrest) 10.68, 21.54
2007: Chris Church (Millville) 11.00, 22.26
2004: Sherron Bullock (Camden) 11.10, 22.21
1999: Tim Athill (Pleasantville) 10.9, 22.46
1996: Kevin Doughty (Oakcrest) 10.6, 21.9
1994: Dennis Sturdivant (Vineland) 10.4, 21.5

Hampton’s previous 100 PR was 10.87 from the trials of the S.J.I. last year. He went on to win the South Jersey Group 1 title and the 55-meter dash at indoor states. His previous 200 PR of 22.10 was also set at this meet last year.

Hampton is only the fourth sprinter to run both sub-10.80 and sub 21.90 in meet history. Here’s that full list:

Fabian Santiago, Oakcrest: 10.67 in 2011, 21.54 in 2012
Dennis Sturdivant, Vineland: 10.4h, 21.5h in 1994
Jeremy Cooper, Kingsway: 10.64, 21.7h in 1997
Thomas Hampton, Clayton: 10.75, 21.82 in 2019

Hampton is also only the fifth sprinter in Gloucester County history to run as fast as 10.75 and 21.82.

The others are Washington Township’s Todd Dutch (10.53 and 21.40 in 2001), Kingsway’s Robert Page (10.53 and 21.69 in 2008), Woodbury’s Shawney Kersey (10.60 in 2009 and 21.72 in 2007), Kingsway’s Dorian Bryant (10.65 in 2003 and 21.41 in 2002) and Deptford’s Bruce Owens (10.66 in 2004 and 21.56 in 2005).
