Pleasantville’s Gabriel Moronta runs S.J. #1 in 800 at South Jersey Invitational!!!

Pleasantville junior Gabriel Moronta, third in the Meet of Champions 800 indoors, finally made his outdoor debut, and it was a good one.

Moronta won the 800 at the 28th annual South Jersey Invitational in 1:55.00, an outdoor PR and just off his overall PR of 1:54.41 from last the indoor M-of-C at the Bennett Center in February.

Moronta’s time is No. 1 in South Jersey this year and No. 3 by any New Jersey half-miler. It makes him the No. 2 junior in New Jersey, behind only Union Catholic’s Elijah Brown, who ran 1:53.94 in California early last month.

That’s also fastest by a Pleasantville runner since Larry Ramirez ran 1:54.98 at states in 2009. Before that it was the Clark twins, Isaac (1:49.27) and Jacob (1:50.30) in 2013.

Moronta is the first Pleasantville runner to win the SJI 800 since Isaac Clark ran 1:54.18 in 2012.

His time is 10th-fastest in meet history and fastest since 2013, when Clearview’s Bill Dolan ran 1:54.14. Here’s a look at every sub-1:56.00 time in meet history
