Delsea’s Burnett annihilates Gloucester County record on way to Meet of Champions triple jump triumph!!!!!

Delsea junior Khaliel Burnett shattered the Gloucester County record on his way to winning the triple jump Saturday at the 39th annual Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington Regional High School in Mansfield.

Burnett jumped 48-9 1/2, winning by seven inches over defending champion Dodley Thermitus of Elizabeth, who jumped 48-2 1/2.

Burnett’s previous PR was 47-5 1/2 at the Gloucester County Championships last month at Delsea.

He broke the Gloucester County record of 48-3 1/4 set in 2009 by Glassboro’s Ryan Chance at Group 1 sectionals on his way to the M-of-C title.

In the 18 years since the triple jump was added to the New Jersey state meet series, Delsea is now the only school with two different winners — Josh Butler in 2006 (48-0) and Burnett.

With Burnett, Butler and Tristan Wilson (47-4 in 2014), Delsea is one of only two New Jersey schools with three triple jumpers at 47-4 or farther. The other is Trenton.

Camden’s Morton runs #4 hurdles time in South Jersey history on way to Meet of Champions TRIUMPH!!!!!

Camden senior Lenaami Morton matched her indoor Meet of Champions hurdles title with an outdoor championship Saturday at the 39th annual M-of-C at Northern Burlington.

Morton out-leaned Union Catholic junior Amaya Chadwick by 2-100ths of a second, with both going under 14 seconds for the first time.

What made the times even more remarkable is that the race was run into a three-meters-per-second wind, very significant for a straight race. With no wind or a legal wind of under 2.0 meters per second, the times would have been dramatically faster

Morton’s previous PR was a 14.04 in the trials earlier Saturday. Before that, her PR was 14.08 in the M-of-C trials last year.

Chadwick’s PR was 14.10 from last year’s state Group 4 meet.

Morton moved into the No. 4 spot on the all-time South Jersey list and Morton and Chadwick moved into the No. 14 and No. 18 spots on the all-time state list:

Here’s a look at the all-time Meet of Champions performance list. This was only the third time two hurdlers have gone under 14 seconds in the same Meet of Champions race. It also happened in 1997 and 2014.

Outlaw leads SIX under 48, wins 400, becomes first Moorestown M-of-C winner in 42 YEARS!!!!!

Moorestown senior Brandon Outlaw ran 47.05 to lead six quarter-milers under 48 seconds and become the Quakers’ first boy to win a Meet of Champions title in 42 years.

Outlaw, seeded No. 1 with a 46.82, became the 11th-fastest 400 runner in Meet of Champions history and the first Moorestown boy to win at the M-of-C since Mike Coffey in the javelin in 1975.

He’s only the fifth South Jersey runner to win the M-of-C 400 in the last 23 years, following Rob Gary of Lenape in 1998, Reuben McCoy of Winslow Township in 2004, Antonio Abney of Willingboro in 2007 and Jamaad Muse of Timber Creek in 2014.

Carteret’s Taj Burgess placed second in 47.22, the second-fastest non-winning time in the meet’s 39-year history! The only faster non-winning time was turned in four years ago by Timber Creek’s Jamaad Muse, who ran 46.67 behind Zyaire Clemes of Trenton, who ran 46.50.

Kingsway’s Vick wins Meet of Champions 1,600 in dramatic photo finish!!!!!

Kingsway senior Rachel Vick and North Hunterdon sophomore Elena DiMarcello both ran 4:52.69 in the Meet of Champions 1,600 Saturday, but Vick was awarded with the victory.

Vick becomes the first Gloucester County girl to win the Meet of Champions 1,600 (or mile) in 35 years, since Michelle Rowen of Washington Township won it in 1982.

She joins sprinter Denise Liles (100 in 1984, 100 and 200 in 1986), Janet Morris in the javelin (1991) and Chelsea Ley (3,200 in 2009) as the fourth Kingsway girl to win a Meet of Champions title.

Vick and DiMarcello both finished more than six seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Camden’s Lenaami Morton runs PR 14.04, #8 in S.J. history, to lead Meet of Champions hurdles qualifiers!!!!!

Camden senior Lenaami Morton lowered her PR from 14.08 to 14.04 in leading all qualifiers into the final of the 100-meter hurdles Saturday at the 39th annual Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington Regional High School in Mansfield.

Morton, who ran 14.08 in the prelims of last year’s Meet of Champions, is bidding to become the second Camden girl in three years to win the M-of-C high hurdles. Keisha Williams won it in 2015.

Morton is undefeated this year in the high hurdles.

Morton moved up from No. 11 to No. 8 in South Jersey history in the 100 highs, and she’s within 5-100ths of a second of becoming the eighth girl in South Jersey history to run sub-14 seconds.

Woodard earns All-America honors in shot put at NCAA Championships!!!

Cherokee graduate Jessica Woodard earned first-team All-Ameria honors for the fourth time in her remarkable career after placing eighth in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Woodard threw had five legal throws, all between 54-4 1/2 and 56-6. She reached 56-6 on her third throw of the trials. She finished just 11 inches out of third place in a very close finish.

Woodard was eighth (55-11) and fifth (57-7) at indoor nationals in the shot the last two years and third last year outdoors (58-8).

Woodard, a junior at Oklahoma, competes in the discus Saturday evening.

Thompson, Mirabelli both earn All-America honors at NCAA javelin!!!

Florence’s Curtis Thompson and Holy Cross’s Chris Mirabelli finished seventh and eighth in the javelin Wednesday at the NCAA championships in Eugene, both earning All-America honors.

But it was ultimately a disappointing day for both former South Jersey throwers, with both falling well short of their career highs.

The long-time rivals both had their best throw of the competition on their second throw, Thompson with a 237-9 and Mirabelli with a 235-2.

Thompson, the defending champion and second-place finisher at the Olympic Trials, has a PR of 271-11 and a season best of 243-0. Mirabelli has a season and career best of 251-6.

Thompson is now a three-time All-America. The honor is the first for Mirabelli.

Rancocas Valley’s Clement joins 23-foot club, leads all state champions into Meet of Champions!!!

Rancocas Valley junior Iverson Clement hit 23 feet for the first time Saturday, winning the state Group 4 long jump title on his final jump and recording the best mark of the six state champions.

Clement is the first Burlington County underclassman over 23 feet since legendary Mike Morrison went 24-1 at the 2002 Meet of Champions, some 15 years ago. He’s actually Burlington County’s first 23-footer overall since Morrison in 2003.

It’s been a month of PRs for Clement, who had a PR of 22-6 1/2 from indoor Easterns at the Armory before going 22-6 3/4 to win sectionals and then 23-0 1/2 at states.

Not bad, considering that Clement didn’t even break 21 feet until his fifth major meet this year.

R.V.’s previous school record was 22-7 1/2 set 20 years ago in 1997 by Terrance Howard at the Burlington County League meet.

Clement is a Florida football commit for the fall of 2018.

OK, this took about two hours, but it’s my first stab at an all-time South Jersey 23-foot list. I found 60 guys who’ve hit 23 feet over the years, a list that goes back to the 1930s. Any errors or omissions, please list details in the comments section!
