Crazy fast early double for Lenape’s Pettipaw!!!

Carly Pettipaw is in midseason form, and we’re only in the middle of April.

The Lenape senior ran 1:05.91 to win the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and 2:16.90 to win the 800-meter run at the Lenape Invitational Saturday.

Both are the fastest FAT times in New Jersey this year.

Pettipaw has run faster in both events, but considering how early in the season it is, the performances are awfully encouraging.

Pettipaw’s PRs are 1:03.94 in the 400IH from last year’s Olympic Conference meet and 2:14.12 from the 2013 indoor state meet in the 800.

Results from Lenape are here.

Pettipaw also has a PR of 56.96 in the 400 from last year’s South Jersey Group 4 sectionals.

Pettipaw will be back in action next weekend at the Penn Relays on Lenape’s DMR, which has a terrific chance to dip under 12 minutes.

The full list of Penn Relays high school acceptances is here.

Cherokee grad Woodard pops PR 173-0 in discus at UCLA meet!!!

Jess Woodard has a new discus PR on her resume. The 2013 Cherokee High graduate, now a freshman at Oklahoma, threw 173-0 at the Rafer Johnson-Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational Saturday at UCLA.

Woodard’s previous PR was 168-10, when she was fourth at the USATF Junior National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, in June 2013.

Woodard was competing against an international field of throwers. She was sixth overall but first among collegians.

Her series looked like this: Foul … 161-11 1/4 … 163-8 1/2 … 173-0 … Foul … Foul.

Woodard, a shot and discus Meet of Champions winner at Cherokee, is now the No. 5 freshman collegian in the country and ranked 29th overall in NCAA Division 1.

The University of Oklahoma doesn’t have a current track and field media guide on its web site. In fact, the most recent one is from 2010. But we took the all-time Sooners women’s discus list from 2009 and updated it, and it looks like Jess is already No. 4 in school history in the discus!

  • 186-1 … Brittany Borman (2010)
  • 182-9 … Karen Shump (2010)
  • 180-6 … Bambi Carson (2001)
  • 173-0 … Jess Woodard (2015)
  • 173-0 … Bailey Wagner (2012)
  • 173-6 … Alexandra Morgan (2014)
  • 167-1 … Jessica Longfors (2001)
  • 166-1 … Kelsey Poljansek (2011)
  • 164-7 … Jorunn Tangen (1983)
  • 170-2 … Kate Foster (2015)
  • 161-10 … Lauren Guerreri (2012)

Woodard is also closing in on the Burlington County alumni discus record set on May 6, 1989, by Pemberton graduate Lillian Rivera. She was competing for Texas Southern when she  threw 174-6 at the 1989 SEC meet in Houston.

Woodard also placed fourth in the hammer throw with a 175-5.

Full results of the meet are here: http://www.soonersports.com/pdf9/3423010.pdf

Hammonton’s McCurry among best in D-3 in the steeplechase!!!

step0001-37You might not remember Pat McCurry from Hammonton. He’s making sure you’ll remember him by the time he’s done at Rowan.

McCurry, a Rowan University junior from Hammonton, ran 9:18.03 for sixth place overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Sam Howell Invitational this weekend, a personal best and the No. 7 time so far this year in NCAA Division 3.

His previous steeple PR was 9:36.40 last year when he won the event at the NJCAA Division 3 nationals at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y.

McCurry won the unseeded section of the race, and his time was fast enough to place him sixth overall.

McCurry was a four-time NJCAA champion at Gloucester County College, which is now officially known as Rowan College at Gloucester County.

Considering McCurry never placed in states in high school, his emergence on the college level is quite a story.

McCurry had PRs of 1:58.79 and 4:23.24 in high school. Not bad but hardly off the charts. He reached states once, thanks to a third place in the 1,600 in the South Jersey Group 3 meet at Egg Harbor in 2012, behind Chris Marco of Toms River South and Kingsway’s Tom Cooke. He went on to take 10th with a 4:26.86 in a race that produced three sub-4:13 times.

In college, he’s run 4:18.96 in the full mile (fourth in the indoor NJAC meet), 1:55.70 in the 800 (in a an indoor meet in Winston-Salem, N.C.) and 15:07.76 for the 5,000 indoors at Widener.

McCurry is a relative newcomer to the steeplechase, but he’s already only 18 seconds off the school record, 9:00.13 set in 1984 by another former Atlantic County runner — Oakcrest’s Don Deckert. Deckert ran that time leading a 1-2-6 Rowan finish at the 1984 NCAA Division 3 championships at Carlton College in Northfield, Minn.

Bob Rimkis was  second (9:00.43) and Lenny Hernandez sixth (9:09.74). Deckert’s twin brother, Ron, won the Division 3 title in the 5,000 (14:13.46) that weekend.

Next for McCurry is the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational at John Hopkins University in Baltimore this weekend.

NBC miler Chris Martin, finally healthy again, returns to the track!!!

step0001-36Since he moved to South Jersey from Illinois after his sophomore year at Mascoutah High School, we’ve seen some pretty impressive moments from Chris Martin. But he’s been hurt more often than not and you just keep thinking, “If he could ever stay healthy, watch out.”

Martin, now a senior at Northern Burlington, ran 4:18.62 for 1,600 meters as a sophomore in Illinois and won a state title. He got his time down to 4:17.34 last spring, when he placed second to Oakcrest’s Ishmael Muhammad (now at Villanova) in the South Jersey Invitational, and he also took second at the Central Jersey Group 3 sectionals behind Middletown North’s Tom O’Neill (now at Providence) with another sub-4:20 performance. He went onto states in the 3,200, placing eighth.

And that was his last track race until yesterday.

Martin, who was hurt at the end of his career in Illinois, has been hurt more often than not since moving to South Jersey.

But after missing the start of cross country with one injury and sitting out all of indoors with another, he’s healthy now and made his 2015 debut Saturday at the Hall of Fame Relays in Maple Shade.

In cold, windy conditions that weren’t conducive to good performances — not surprising, considering there have been precisely two nice days for the Hall of Fame Relays since 1985 — Martin ran 800 legs on two relay teams for the Greyhounds.

Martin ran a 2:03 and a 2:05 unchallenged, which might not sound super fast for a 4:17 miler but is actually really encouraging considering the conditions, how early in the season it is and that they were Martin’s first track races in 10 1/2 months.

Remember, Martin’s 800 PR is 2:00.39, from last year’s BCSL meet, so to be just three seconds off his PR in the wind and cold running solo in an off event is definitely a good sign.

Northern won the large-school 3,200-meter relay behind Martin, 2014 Liberty Division XC champ Beepul Bharti and Dion Young and Gene Zaleski. Young, a sophomore hurdler, showed a lot of versatility running the 800.

The Greyhounds also took second in the sprint medley behind Moorestown, although they were in different sections, so Martin didn’t get a chance to race against Quaker anchor Harrison Morris.

One interesting note about Martin: His PR for 3,200 meters remains 9:24 from Illinois. His best last spring was a 9:28.11 at states. But based on his 4:17 and his form at Holmdel, where he’s run as fast as 16:20.6, you know he’s capable of going well under 9:20.

Should be a fun senior year for Martin. And hopefully a healthy one!

Petela closes indoor season with historic all-time SJ #3 mile! We have LISTS!!!!!!

step0001-35On Jan. 31, I wrote this: “You can’t help but wonder: If Luke Petela is running 4:18 unchallenged on a flat track in January, just how fast is he going to run by the end of the winter?”

The answer is 4:13 and change for a full mile.

Petela became one of the fastest milers in New Jersey history at indoor nationals, and it’s going to be an awfully interesting spring as Petela chases several records.

First, let’s put together some lists showing exactly where Petela ranks with his 4:13.36 at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory in New York.

Here’s the update all-time New Jersey indoor list, with 1,600 times converted to a full mile using the standard 1.0058 conversion factor. I listed all 45 known times of 4:16.0 and under, including conversions from 1,600 meters (which technically you shouldn’t do, because you shouldn’t convert into a longer distance, but I didn’t want to omit those guys, so whatever).

  • 4:13.9 ….. Dick Caton (Woodbury), 1978

Crazy that the two fastest overall mile times in Camden County history and three of the top four are both from Haddon Township!

Will be awesome to see Petela take on the best in the country at the Penn Relays in a few weeks and shoot for Brett Johnson’s South Jersey record.

Oh, one more thing:

Here is Petela’s PR progression, with the times courtesy of NJ Milesplit:

  • 5:05.77 … Group 2 Indoor Sectionals, Toms River, Feb. 6, 2012 [18th]
  • 4:47.95 … Haddonfield Invitational Freshman Race, Haddonfield, May 17, 2012 [1st]
  • 4:31.84 … Haddonfield Invitational, Haddonfield, May 16, 2013 [10th]
  • 4:26.52 … SJTCA Small-School Meet, Toms River, Jan. 14, 2014 [3rd]
  • 4:25.26 … Indoor Group 2 Sectionals, Toms River, Feb. 1, 2014 [1st]
  • 4:25.18 … Indoor Group 2 States, Toms River, Feb. 17, 2014 [2nd]
  • 4:25.08 … Indoor Meet of Champions, Toms River, March 1, 2014 [21st]
  • 4:19.42 … South Jersey Open, Buena, May 1, 2014 [6th]
  • 4:16.55 … Camden County Championships, Haddon Twp., May 10, 2014 [1st]
  • 4:14.39 … Meet of Champions, South Plainfield, June 4, 2014 [1st]
  • 4:13.36 … New Balance Nationals, March 3, 2015 [7th, full mile]

Petela’s PR at this point a year ago was 4:25.08, so considering that converts to 4:26.62 for a full mile, he’s dropped 13.26 seconds in the last year.

But he did run 2:01.62 for 800 as a sophomore and 1:56.06 as a junior, so it’s not like this success came totally out of nowhere.

Banks, Bradham, Adams turn in rare 1-2-3 S.J. finish at Easterns!!!!!

South Jersey’s participation at the 81st annual Easterns was limited by the weather, but the boys high jump was certainly well represented.

South Jersey athletes went 1-2-3 in the high jump, with Ameer Banks of Delsea, Devin Bradham of Williamstown and Tariq Adams of Pleasantville the only athletes over the bar at both 6-6 and 6-8.

So when the bar was raised to 6-10, it was an all-South Jersey affair. Banks and Bradham both cleared 6-10, and Bradham actually had the best attempt at 7-0, but Banks won on fewer misses.

As I announced Tuesday night at the Armory, before this year, no Gloucester County high jumper had ever cleared 6-10 at Easterns. Then Banks and Bradham both did it within the span of about 90 seconds.

Bradham had already cleared 6-10, but it was a PR for Banks, and both tied the Gloucester County indoor record set in 2006 by another Delsea jumper, Josh Butler.

Braham and Banks are both now tied for the No. 4 spot on the all-time South Jersey indoor list.

Here’s  a look at the all-time South Jersey indoor list, with the nine jumpers to clear 6-10 or better indoors:

  • 7-4 1/4 … Mike Morrison (Willingboro), 2003
  • 7-0 … Terry Ferguson (Cherry Hill West), 1987
  • 6-11 … Mike Pascuzzo (Lenape), 1980
  • 6-10 … Damon Julian (Edgewood), 1984
  • 6-10 … Raffael Craig (Millville), 1999
  • 6-10 … Josh Butler (Delsea), 2006
  • 6-10 … Devin Bradham (Williamstown), 2015
  • 6-10 … Paul Klemic (Mainland Reg.), 2000
  • 6-10 … Ameer Banks (Delsea), 2015

The 1-2-3 South Jersey finish is the first at Easterns in 13 years, since Camden, Vineland and Pleasantville swept the first three spots in the 1,600-meter relay. It was the first in an individual event in 16 years, since Danyne Brown and Dwight Ruff of Camden and Jeff Young of Woodrow Wilson took the first three spots in the 55 hurdles in 1999.

Those are the only 1-2-3 South Jersey boys sweeps in Easterns history.

There’ve been two 1-2-3 S.J. sweeps in the girls meet and even a 1-2-3-4 South Jersey finish:

Check out the All-Time Easterns Boys Performance List!!!!!

The 81st annual Easterns is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the New Balance Armory in New York. It’s a meet that has produced some remarkable performances, especially since it moved from Jadwin Gym in Princeton to the Armory in 1996.

First, a little history of the Easterns:

It was in 1934 that the Amateur Athletic Union first held an interscholastic meet at the old Madison Square Garden on 50th Street and 8th Avenue. There had been a “national” championship held earlier at the Newark Armory under the auspices of the St. Benedict’s Prep, a charter member of the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference, but it is from the Garden meet that the meet will be held at the Armory Tuesday – The Easterns – draws its lineage.

The meet remained at the Garden until 1965, when the AAU decided to take its championships on the road for a couple of years. The 1934 meet had just one division, won by Jimmy Curran’s team at Mercersburg Academy, located in remote, rural Central Pennsylvania, about 75 miles southwest of Harrisburg. It was under Curran’s tutelage that several world-class athletes developed at Mercersburg, including 800-meter run world record holder Ted Meredith.

In 1935, the meet split into two divisions – high school and prep school. The two divisions united again in 1955 with post-graduates banned. In 1966, the meet moved to the 168th Street Armory in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and remained there until 1972 under the auspices first of the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association, then of the Staten Island Coaches Association.

For 44 years – from 1934 through 1977 – Easterns even had team scoring, with schools from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Virginia taking turns winning.

In 1973, a conflict of dates caused the meet to be cancelled. It was then that the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference stepped in and took over, moving the meet to Princeton University‘s Jadwin Gym. The Easterns, as the meet was now known, soon became the premiere indoor high school track meet in the nation.

In 1980, the girls Easterns debuted in Boston and continued there until 1996, when it merged with the boys meet and, under the jurisdiction of the Bergen County Track Coaches Association, was held for one year at Princeton before moving back into 168th Street Armory, now newly refurbished and boasting one of the world’s fastest banked 200-meter tracks.

Among the Olympic gold medalists who have competed over the years at Easterns are 1979 long jump winner Carl Lewis and 1991 300-yard dash winner Lamont Smith, both of Willingboro.

Other former Olympians who’ve won Easterns titles are 1979 high jump champ Milton Goode of Monmouth Regional; 1982 high hurdles winner Luis Morales of Oxon Hill., Md.; Alberto Salazar of Wayland, Mass., who has held the two-mile meet record for 32 years; 1977 mile winner John Tuttle of Alfred-Almond, N.Y.; and 1980 and 1981 1,000-yard run winner John Marshall of Plainfield; and Willingboro‘s Carol Lewis, whose meet record in the long jump was broken just last year by Keturah Orji.

OK, here is the all-time Easterns top-20 performance list, including events currently contested and events that are no longer included. Later today, we’ll post the girls top-20 list. And tomorrow morning, we’ll post a list of all-time winners going back to 1934.

Quimby the latest Lenape miler to break into all-time S.J. top 10!

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Lenape has a fast miler.

Sophomore Megan Quimby just missed breaking five minutes for 1,600 meters at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, placing second in 5:00.12.

That makes her the third Lenape girl in the all-time South Jersey indoor top-10 and the fourth Lenape girl to run sub-5:04 indoors.

Only four other South Jersey schools have had as many as two sub-5:04 milers indoors — Williamstown, Haddonfield, Cherokee and Washington Township. Only Cherokee has had three.

Quimby’s time is No. 19 in the U.S. this winter and No. 4 among sophomores.

Here’s the updated all-time South Jersey indoor girls 1,600-meter performance list, with mile times converted using the standard 0.9942 conversion factor:

Only four girls from South Jersey have run faster than Quimby in the indoor Meet of Champs, two of them in the 1980s and two of them last year. Here’s the list of the fastest South Jersey times ever from the indoor Meet of Champions:

Quimby’s 1,600 PR coming into indoors was a 5:20 from last spring, but she PR’d with a 5:05.79 at sectionals, a 5:05.34 at states and then the 5:00.12 at the Meet of Champions.

She anchored Lenape’s U.S. #3 12:04.90 DMR at the Varsity Classic earlier this month with a 5:06.8 and also split 2:15 when Lenape ran its U.S. #4 4:08.21 SMR at the state Relays. Lenape will load up the DMR at Easterns back at the Armory earlier this month.

Petela runs all-time S.J. #4 mile to win Meet of Champs!!!!!!

Luke Petela keeps winning. And keeps getting faster.

Petela, the Haddon Township senior, won the 1,600-meter run Saturday at the Meet of Champions in a personal-best 4:14.71, finishing 12 meters ahead of Colin Daly, a River Dell junior over the flat 200-meter track at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

His time is No. 5 in the U.S.

Petela becomes the first boy from Haddon Township to win a Meet of Champions title indoors in 45 years, since the second year the meet existed, when Ken Medlin won the two-mile in 9:13.6.

He’s also the first South Jersey M-of-C 1,600 winner since Erik Johnson of Ocean City in 2011 and the first from Camden County since Chris Platt of Haddonfield won in 2003.

Petela’s time is No. 4 in South Jersey indoor history. Converting to 4:16.21 for a full mile, it’s fastest by a South Jersey runner in 12 years — since Platt’s 4:16.01 in 2003 — and trails only two legends — Cherokee’s Marc Pelerin and Cherry Hill’s Marty Ludwikowski.

Here’s the updated all-time South Jersey indoor performance list, with 1,600s converted into miles:

  • 4:15.16 Marc Pelerin (Cherokee), 2002
  • 4:15.5 Marty Ludwikowski (Cherry Hill West), 1975
  • 4:16.01 Chris Platt (Haddonfield), 2003
  • 4:16.21m Luke Petela (Haddon Twp.), 2015
  • 4:16.6 Jim Smith (Haddonfield), 1980
  • 4:17.4 Greg Stremmel (Gateway), 1974
  • 4:17.7 Rich Caton (Woodbury), 1979
  • 4:17.52m Erik Johnson (Ocean City), 2012
  • 4:18.07m Miles Schoedler (Ocean City), 2011
  • 4:18.12 Bill Dolan (Clearview), 2014

And here’s a list of all South Jersey winners in the indoor Meet of Champs mile or 1,600:

1974  … Greg Stremmel (Gateway), 4:18.2 (mile)
2003 … Chris Platt (Haddonfield), 4:16.64 (1,600)
2004 … Carmen Cavella (Washington Twp.), 4:19.09
2011 … Erik Johnson (Ocean City), 4:16.02
2015 … Luke Petela (Haddon Twp.), 4:14.71

Petela, who is undefeated this year at 1,600 meters, lowered his PR more than two seconds from 4:16.95, which he ran at states.

His time is the fifth-fastest winning time since the race was changed from a mile to a 1,600 in 1982 and the fastest time ever in the M-of-C by a South Jersey runner. On the overall all-time M-of-C indoor performance list, he’s No. 15 all-time.

Here’s the all-time Meet of Champions performance list, with 1,600 times converted to the mile using the standard 1.0058 conversion rate:
