Deptford’s Lathan Brown runs S.J. #1 800 at Easterns, shatters 53-year-old school record!!!!!

Deptford junior Lathan Brown shaved more than a second off his 800 PR with a terrific race Tuesday night at Easterns.

Brown placed 4th in 1:56.71, well under his previous PR of 1:57.91 from a SJTCA meet at Ocean Breeze last month.

His PR before that was an outdoor 1:59.45 from Haddonfield last May, so Brown has now lowered his PR nearly three seconds in three weeks and lowered his indoor PR 10 seconds in the last month.

Brown won the 400 and 800 at South Jersey Group 3 sectionals in 50.59 and 2:00.42 (and also took 3rd in the hurdles and ran on the winning 4-by-4) and placed 3rd in both at states with 50.32 and 1:59.71. He qualified for both races at the Meet of Champions Saturday at the Bubble.

Because he ran the 800 at Easterns, you’d think there’s a pretty good chance he’ll run the 400 at Meet of Champions. He’s the No. 9 seed in the 400 and the No. 22 seed in the 800. Deptford’s 4-by-4 also qualified.

Brown’s time is No. 12 on a very fast all-time Gloucester County list – 10 of the top 20 times in South Jersey are by Gloucester County half-milers, and Brown’s No. 12 county ranking equals No. 37 in South Jersey history.

Brown’s 1:56.71 bumped Pennsauken junior Bryce Tucker’s 1:57.38 from Ocean Breeze out of the No. 1 spot this year in South Jersey. It’s No. 9 in the state this year.

His time is fastest at Easterns by any South Jersey junior since 2014, when Pleasantvile twins Isaac and Jacob Clark ran 1-2 in 1:54.34 and 1:55.08.

On Tuesday, Brown got out quickly in 27.65 and came through 400 meters in 56.97. He closed in 29.21 and 30.53. Clifton senior Jacob Heredia, who’s run 4:13.00 and 9:09.69 outdoors, won the race in 1:54.60.

Brown also broke the 53-year-old school record of 1:57.7h , converted from 1:58.3 for 880 yards set by Wayne Jenkins at the inaugural indoor Meet of Champions at the Jersey City Armory in 1969. Jenkins placed 3rd behind Roselle Catholic’s Joe Savage [1:55.5] and Paramus Catholic’s Bob Benkovich [1:57.3].

Here’s the Gloucester County all-time indoor 800 list:
1:51.80 … Derrell Manhertz [Kingsway], 2013
1:54.53 … Stone Caraccio [Kingsway], 2020

Edinboro’s Kylie Anicic from Kingsway wins crazy QUAD at PSAC Championships, qualifies for Division 2 Nationals in 5,000!!!!!!

Kingsway graduate Kylie Anicic is off to NCAA Division 2 Nationals after a monster performance at her conference meet.

Anicic qualified for NCAA Division 2 National Championships, scheduled for next Friday and Saturday at the Harvey Dean Track at Pittsburg (Kans.) State University, in the 5,000-meter run, thanks to her 16:47.87 performance at the Edinboro Invitational on Feb. 18. That ranks No. 15 this year in Division 2, but considering that she ran unchallenged – 2nd-place was nearly two minutes behind and there was no 3rd place – it seems like she’s ready to go much faster.

Especially considering her performance this past weekend.

At the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships this past weekend at Edinboro’s Zafirovski Recreation Center, Anicic won the mile in 4:58.38, the 3,000 in 9:59.46 and the 5,000 in 17:12.88 and anchored the winning distance medley, which ran 12:03.57 (the results site did not list splits).

Edinboro won its first team title ever with 96 points, 20 more than both Slippery Rock and California (Pa.), and Anicic had a hand in 40 of those 96 points.

You’re not going to get a ton of PRs when you’re racing four times in two days, but Anicic did PR in the mile, an event she had only run once since the end of her 2020 indoor season at Towson. Her 4:58.38 broke her PR of 5:13.41, which she ran in January of 2020 at the Towson Tiger Invitational Armory.

Anicic had already set PRs of 9:43.39 for 3,000 meters and 16:47.87 for 5,000 meters in February.

On the all-time Edinboro performance list, she now ranks No. 3 in the mile, No. 1 in the 3,000 and No. 3 in the 5,000.

At the PSAC meet, Anicic got started with the DMR win on Day 1 and then won the 5,000 about three hours later. On Sunday, she won the mile early in the afternoon and doubled back in the 3,000 about 2 ½ hours later.

In all, she raced four times in 25 hours and won all four.

At Division 2 nationals, Anicic races at 7:15 p.m. a week from Friday, March 11.

High jumper David Godbolt becomes first R.V. boy to win a title in Easterns’ 87-year history!!!!!!!

For all the tremendous athletes who’ve competed for the Rancocas Valley boys track team at Easterns, none of them had ever won an individual event.

Dave Bannar placed 3rd in the 60-yard hurdles in 1976, 1-10th of a second behind winner Paul Snipes of Essex Catholic. Phil Reid was 3rd in the 200 in 2006, only 11-100ths behind winner Andre Pinnock of Sheepshead Bay. Terrance Howard placed 2nd in the high jump in 1998 at 6-6 on more misses vs. Tony Cordo of Monsignor Farrell. Just a few years ago, in 2017, Iverson Clement long jumped 22-6 ½, finishing just 3 ¾ inches behind winner Emmanuel Oguntoyne of Amityville, N.Y.

But no winners.

Until now.

It’s fair to say David Godbolt is one of the more surprising Easterns winners in the meet’s 87-year history.

Godbolt is an R.V. sophomore who never competed in track until last spring and had a high jump PR of 5-6 just 10 weeks ago.

And it usually takes at least a 6-8 or 6-10 to win the Easterns high jump. The meet has produced 12 7-footers and over 40 jumpers who’ve cleared 6-10.

But on Tuesday night at the 168th Street Armory in New York, Godbolt won himself a championship as the only one of four jumpers to clear 6-0 clean at the 87th annual Easterns.

Godbolt and seven others, including Egg Harbor junior Ahmad Fogg, cleared opening height of 5-8, and Godbolt and Fogg were among five who cleared on their first attempt. Five jumpers cleared 5-10 but only Godbolt and Adam Elkhouly of Jackson Memorial on their first try.

With the bar at 6-0, Godbolt and Nate Alvarez of Archbishop Stepinac of White Plains, N.Y., cleared on their first attempt, Fogg on his second and Elkhouly on his third.

When nobody cleared 6-2, Goldbolt got the win because he had no misses at any height. Alvarez was 2nd because he was clean at 5-10, and Fogg took 3rd because he cleared 6-0 on fewer attempts than Elkouly.

It really is quite an accomplishment considering this is Godbolt’s first year of indoor track, he’s needed treatment on a sore back for the last two weeks, he’s only a sophomore, and he just cleared 6-0 for the first time two weeks ago. He’s now raised his PR half a foot since late December.

Godbolt is the first South Jersey sophomore to win a title at Easterns in 14 years, since Jonathan Vitez of Haddonfield won the two-mile in 2008. He’s the first Burlington County soph to win an Easterns title since John Meekins of Cinnaminson won the long jump as a soph in 1987.

He’s South Jersey’s first Easterns high jump champ since Ameer Banks of Delsea in 2015 and the first from Burlington County since Mike Morrison won his second title in a row in 2003.

He’s also tied for the No. 1 spot in New Jersey this year among sophomores. Zaimer Wright of Sayreville cleared 6-0 at a meet at the Bubble back in December.

Godbolt’s indoor season is over, but if he continues improving at the rate he’s improved over the last year, big things are in store for the R.V. soph.

Grace Wassell wins two-mile, becomes first Highland girl to win an Easterns title!!!!!!

Grace Wassell became the 1st girl ever from Highland to win an Eastern States title when she won the two-mile Tuesday night at the Armory.

Wassell ran 11:31.62 for the full two miles, finishing 40 meters ahead of 2nd-place Anna Heras of Point Pleasant Boro, who ran 11:40.45.

Wassell, Heras and Robin Roth of Princeton separated from the pack early, and with about 10 laps to go Wassell and Heras gapped Roth. Wassell began opening up a lead on Heras with about a mile to go and ran the last several laps solo.

Wassell is the 4th South Jersey girl to win the Easterns two-mile, following Bishop Eustace’s Ann Klocke in 1996, Cinnaminson’s Megham Malloy in 2011 and Mainland Regional’s Alyssa Aldridge in 2018.

Highland has had a couple previous Easterns winners. Kevin Pumphrey won the two-mile in 9:22.67 in 1986, and Floyd Whitaker doubled the long jump and triple jump in 2020, the last time the meet was held.

This was the 87th running of the Easterns and the 47th running of the girls meet, which was held in Boston from 1980 through 1996, Jadwin Gym in 1997 and at the Armory since 1998.

Wassell, the three-time South Jersey Group 3 XC champ, has run 2:16.68 and 5:01.96 this year. She ran 11:13.54 in a much deeper two-mile in Virginia back in January.

She’s expected to run the 1,600 Saturday at the Meet of Champions. She’s the No. 9 seed with that 5:01.96. She also qualified in the 800.

PLEASANTVILLE’S XANDER ROBERTS-BOGIN WINS EASTERNS 400 WITH MASSIVE PR, MOVES UP TO #4 IN SOUTH JERSEY HISTORY!!!!!!!!

What a night at Easterns for Pleasantville junior Xander Roberts-Bogin, who ran away with the 400-meter dash with a massive PR and one of the fastest times in South Jersey history.

Roberts-Bogin shaved nearly 1 ½ seconds off his personal-best time and won the 400 title at the 87th annual Easterns at the Armory in 48.45, matching the No. 15 time in the country this year according to the MileSplit national database. His time makes him the No. 5 junior in the country.

Coming into the meet, Roberts-Bogin had an indoor PR of 49.81 from a meet in December at Ocean Breeze and an outdoor PR of 49.88 from the Atlantic County Championships at Buena last spring.

So he just broke his PR by 1.36 seconds! That’s unheard of in a 400!

Roberts-Bogin ran 50.11 at states last weekend at the Bubble and finished 2nd to Nottingham’s Shamali White, the Meet of Champions winner at 100 and 200 meters last spring and 4th nationally in the 200.

But on Tuesday night on the fast, banked track at the 168th Street Armory, he put it all together and ran the No. 4 time in South Jersey history and broke the Atlantic County record.

The previous county record was 48.48, set by Amir Brock of Egg Harbor Township at 2017 Easterns.

The only faster 400 runners in South Jersey indoor track history are Moorestown’s Brandon Outlaw, who ran 47.90 in 2017 at New Balance Nationals, also at the Armory, Camden’s Jade Smith, who ran 48.27 at the 2002 Midwest Indoor Track Classic in Lincoln, Neb., and Lenape’s Mohammad Kanu, who ran 48.36 at 2000 Easterns, also on the Armory.

Roberts-Bogin hit the 200 in the lead in 23.14 and only built his lead over the second lap, finishing 4 ½ meters ahead of 2nd-place Korede Otusajo of in Windsor Mill, Md.

His time is fastest at Easterns since 2017, when Cory Poole of East Orange won the race in 47.82.

He’s only the 3rd South Jersey runner to win Easterns 400-meter dash in meet history. Kanu won in 2000 and Millville’s Daniel Fenton in 2019.

Roberts-Bogin is Pleasantville’s 3rd individual champion in Easterns history. Joe Lewis won the 800 in 1:56.31 in 1998 and Isaac Clark won the 800 in 2012 in 1:54.34. Also, their 4-by-400 won in 2007 in 3:18.90 and the 4-by-8 set a meet record in 2013 that still stands of 7:45.55.

His time is tied for 20th-fastest in meet history.

Rancocas Valley senior Anabella Chin raced away from the field and won the 55-meter hurdles Tuesday night at Easterns in commanding fashion.

Chin ran a personal-best 8.21 – No. 22 in South Jersey history – and beat 2nd-place Rahway junior Nyjae Shipley by nearly 1 ½ meters. Shipley placed 2nd in 8.43.

Chin led all qualifiers in the preliminary heats in 8.33 and in the semifinals in 8.31. In the final, racing in lane 4 in the middle of the track at the 168th Street Armory, she blew away her PR of 8.28, which she ran in the prelims at the state Group 4 meet Saturday at the Bubble in Toms River.

And now the all-time Easterns 20-deep girls performance lists!!!!!

Girls Easterns weren’t held along with the boys meet until 1997. Before that – from 1980 through 1996 – the meet was held in Boston independently of the boys meet.

This performance list includes marks from the entire 42-year run of girls Easterns, and there are a lot of incredible marks still remaining from the girls meet.

As always, if you notice a mark that’s incorrect or missing, let me know so I can fix it! Some non-winning results from the early 1980s in Boston have been lost forever. The people who ran those meets are no longer with us, the one newspaper that carried results – the Boston Globe – didn’t always list non-winning marks, and the one media person I know of who is still around who probably has those results won’t help. If you’re reading this, you know who you are, and thanks for nothing!

Anyway, enjoy the lists and enjoy the meet!

Kingsway graduate Sam Allen headed to Oman for World Racewalking Championships!!!!!

Sam Allen, a Kingsway graduate now attending Cornell, is part of the U.S. national team that will compete at the 2022 World Athletics Race Walking Championships this weekend in Oman.

Allen, a 2020 graduate of Kingsway, will compete in the 20,000-kilometer event along with Americans Emmanuel Corvera, A.J. Gruttadauro and Jordan Crawford.

The 20K walk is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in Muscat, Oman, which will be 7 a.m. Saturday EST. The two-day event will be held on the grounds of the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Allen, 19, has a 20K PR of 1:30.43.43 set earlier this month outdoors on the track at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon, Calif.

He ranks No. 4 in the world this year at 20,000 meters and No. 2 among U.S. men, behind  Nick Christie, an Olympian who finished just ahead of Allen in El Cajon in 1:30.43.

In June, Allen placed 6th in the U.S. Olympic Trials 20,000 race walk on a road course in Springfield, Ore., in 1:37.59.

At Kingsway, Allen ran track and cross country. He was on the 2019 Kingsway XC team that placed 3rd at South Jersey Group 4 sectionals.

Oman is a sultanate with a population of about 4.8 million located in Western Asia on the Arabian Sea and borders Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The capital city of Muscat, population 1.6 million, is located across the Gulf of Oman from Iran.

Meet of Champions boys and girls performance lists and wild-card additions now available!!!

The 53rd annual boys Meet of Champions and 43rd annual girls Meet of Champions are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

The meet should be at Ocean Breeze, but, alas, the state is forcing kids to run the biggest meet of  the season on a slow, flat track inside a cramped, uncomfortable air bubble.

New Jersey athletes are so talented, it will still be a tremendous meet. But anybody who watched the 2020 meet at Ocean Breeze knows what an indoor Meet of Champions should look like.

In any case, field events get underway at 5 p.m. Friday and track events start at 10 a.m. Saturday.

On Monday afternoon, the NJSIAA released the official boys and girls performance lists, including wild-cards.
