Sophomore Ethan Buck, Ocean City’s 5th runner, beat the 5th runner from Champlain Valley Union by 20 places to help the Red Raiders squeak out a three-point win in the Varsity B race Saturday at the Manhattan Invitational.
Through four runners, Champlain Valley Union of Hinesburg, Vt., led Ocean City by a whopping 17 points at 51-68. But Buck ran 14:14 over the historic 2 ½-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and beat Champlain Valley Union’s fifth runner by 20 seconds, providing the winning margin in a 98-101 triumph.
Senior Nick Scarangelli led the way for the Raiders in 6th place with a time of 13:04, and junior Matt Hoffman was 11th in 13:32. Seniors Chris Sardy and Colin Abbott finished nearly together in 27th and 28th in 14:08 and 14:11, and Buck was just three seconds behind.
