Remarkable Eastern sophomore Natalie Dumas won the 400-meter hurdles Wednesday at the Meet of Champions with the 7th-fastest time in state history.

Dumas ran 58.98 , winning by more than 1 ½ seconds over senior Alexandria Scott of St. John Vianney.

Her time is 2nd-fastest in South Jersey history, behind only Krystal Cantey of Winslow Township, who ran 56.83 at the 2005 Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

It’s also 3rd-fastest in meet history behind Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin [56.23 in 2016] and Passaic Tech’s Amber Allen [58.44 in 2009].

The only faster sophomores in state history are McLaughlin, who ran 55.28 in 2015 at the World Youth Trials in Lisle, Ill., and Tawana Watkins of Paterson Kennedy, who ran 58.50 at 2000 Raleigh Nationals.

Dumas is the 3rd Meet of Champions winner from Eastern, joining Olympic gold medalist English Gardner in the 100 in 2007 and 200 in 2008 and older sister Kadence, who won the 800 last year.

Unfortunately, with the Meet of Champions and West Philly Nationals both scheduled for this week, the South Jersey contingent at the USATF Under-20 Championships won’t be a very big one.

The Meet of Champions is scheduled for Wednesday in Pennsauken, West Philly Nationals run Wednesday through Saturday at Franklin Field and USATF Under-20’s run Wednesday and Thursday at Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore. Terrible scheduling and planning.

But there will be a small South Jersey presence in Eugene with a handful of collegiate rising sophomores who are still eligible because they don’t turn 21 until 2025.

USATF Under-20’s are the qualifier for the World Under-20’s, scheduled for August in Lima, Peru.

Kadence Dumas: The Eastern graduate, who just finished her freshman year at Delaware, is the No. 10 seed in the women’s 800 with her PR of 2:08.90 in her most recent race – the final at the Coastal Athletic Conference Championshiips in Elon, N.C., where she placed 3rd.

Bryce Tucker: Two of the top five seeds in the 400-meter hurdles are former Pennsauken teammates Bryce Tucker and Premier Wynn. Tucker is the No. 5 seed with his 50.61 that won the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., last month. That’s No. 2 in Rutgers history and No. 6 in NCAA Division 1 among freshman this year.

Premier Wynn: Wynn finished his freshman year at Norfolk State by running a PR 50.72 to place 2nd to Howard senior Noah Langford in the 400 hurdles at the MEAC Championships in Norfolk, Va. He was the 7 freshman in Division 1 this year, 11-100ths of a second behind Tucker.

Lathan Brown: Another Rutgers hurdler from South Jersey, Deptford’s Brown ran a PR 52.16 in April in a meet in Tampa and then backed it up with a 52.17 for 7th place in the final at the Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor, Mich. He’s No. 10 in Rutgers history.

Leah Howard: Millville graduate was the 9th-ranked freshman javelin thrower in NCAA Division 1 this year with her 164-4 at the Big 12 Championships in Waco. She’s the 9th-seed in the javelin in Eugene.

Also, a couple Rowan athletes qualified: Damarion Potts, who just finished his freshman year at Rowan, is entered in the high jump. Potts, from South Brunswick High, PR’d with a 6-8 ¼ when he won the New Jersey Athletic Conference indoor title at Ocean Breeze. And Damitrius Hester, a Mahwah graduate who threw 213-3 to place 3rd at the NCAA Division 3 Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C.,

With absolutely loaded fields, a spectacular facility at Pennsauken and nice weather in the forecast, the 54 annual Meet of Champions  could be  one of the best ever.

Winslow sophomore Ma’Syiah Brawner elevated herself into some elite company over the weekend with her performance in the two horizontal jumps at states.

Brawner won the Group 3 long jump with a lifetime-best 19-3 ½ and placed 2nd to Ocean City senior Sophia Curtis in the triple jump with a PR 40-2 ½.

That made her the first South Jersey girl in history to jump at least 19 feet in the long jump and 40 feet in the triple jump and only the 8th girl in New Jersey history to hit both of those landmarks.

She also became only the 2nd girl to reach both of those milestones in the same state meet. Katurah Orji of Mount Olive, the former American record holder in the triple jump and a two-time Olympic finalist, did it three times at the state Group 2 meet at South Plainfield – 19-9 ½ and 40-10 in 2012, 19-6 ¼ and 43-0 in 2013 and 20-11 ¾ and 44-11 in 2014.

The others who’ve accomplished this rarity at any point in their high school career: Englewood’s Charlene Cummings in 1997 [19-1 ½, 42-2 ¾], Lakewood’s Essence Mayers in 2011 [19-5, 40-6 ¼], Newark Tech’s Iana Amsterdam in 2013 [19-5 ¾, 40-9 ½], Linden’s Kayla Richardson in 2014 [20-2 ¼, 40-7 ¾] and Paramus Catholic’s Tiffany Bautista in 2018 [19-2 ½, 40-6 ¾].

Brawner is the No. 2 seed in the long jump Wednesday at the Meet of Champions, behind only Montclair senior Ashley Noel [19-7 ¾], and the No. 2 seed in the triple jump, behind only Curtis.

Looks like Brawner is the No. 4 sophomore in New Jersey history in the long jump, behind Willingboro’s Carol Lewis [20-7 ¼], Orji [19-7 ½ in 2014] and Winslow’s Tionna Tobias [19-7 ½ in 2017], and the No. 3 sophomore in the triple jump, behind Orji [41-0 ¾ in 2012] and Mahogany Jenkins of Watchung Hills in 2018 [40-6].

Overall, she’s now 4th in South Jersey history in both the long jump and in the triple jump.

South Jersey has produced 428 Meet of Champions winners since the inception of the boys meet in 1969 and the addition of the girls meet in 1974.

That includes 243 boys winners in 54 boys meets (there was no meet in 2020), or 4 ½ winners per year, and 185 winners in 49 girls meets, or just under four winners per year.

The first boys winners were Vineland’s Levin Handy in the 440, Rancocas Valley’s Al Rich in the 120-yard hurdles and Salem’s Howard Bell in the 180-yard hurdles, all in the inaugural 1969 meet on a rainy Saturday at Highland Park High School.

South Jersey didn’t produce any winners at the initial girls meet at Rutgers University Stadium in Piscataway in 1974 – the best finish was from Woodbury’s Vonnie Coker, who placed 2nd in the 100-yard dash in 11.2, behind only Glen Rock’s Vanessa Hughley. A year later, Coker became South Jersey’s 1st winner in the girls Meet of Champions back at Rutgers when she won the 100 in 11.1.

A huge and talented South Jersey contingent will certainly add to that total of 243 Meet of Champions winners at the 55th annual Meet of Champions Wednesday at Pennsauken’s beautiful new facility.

South Jersey earned 15 No. 1 seeds in the Meet of Champions 55th annual Meet of Champions, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pennsauken.

In the boys meet, Burlington City senior Malachi James is the top seed in the 100, Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown is No. 1 seed in the 110 hurdles, Riverside senior Jamir Brown is seeded 1st in the long jump, Moorestown senior Rece Englehardt is No. 1 in the triple jump, Oakcrest senior Ryan Merlino is tops in the pole vault and Winslow’s 1,600-meter relay team is also a No. 1 seed.

South Jersey girls have nine No. 1 seeds: Naylah Jones is No. 1 in the 100 and 200, Pennsauken soph Sianni Wynn is first in the 400 (and No. 2 in both short sprints), Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally will have the inside lane in the 3,200, Washington Township senior Dahlia Beasley, Williamstown junior Addison inge and Clayton senior Alanna Woolfolk are among four jumpers who share the No. 1 seed in the high jump, Ocean City senior Sophia Curtis is top seed in the triple jump, Moorestown junior Hannah Byrd-Leitner in the pole vault, Eastern senior Zoe Goldberg in the javelin and Timber Creek’s 400-meter relay team.

South Jersey also has 17 No. 2 seeds and 14 No. 3 seeds for a total of 46 athletes or relay teams seeded in the top three Wednesday.

South Jersey has a top-3 seed in 12 of 18 boys events and 16 of 18 girls events. That’s all but eight events. The only event South Jersey doesn’t have a top-10 seed is the boys 3,200-meter relay (and Egg Harbor Township is No. 11).

Before this year, only five girls in South Jersey history had cleared 12 feet in the pole vault either indoors or outdoors.

Only once – back in 2004 – had even two South Jersey girls cleared 12-0 the same year. That was Shawnee’s Danielle O’Reilly, who set the national indoor record of 13-5 at the Ridgewood Varsity Classic at the Armory, and Moorestown’s Jessica Kloss, who cleared 12-0 two weeks later at Easterns, also at the Armory, where she placed 2nd to O’Reilly (who cleared 13-0 that day).

So Friday was the most successful pole vaulting day ever for South Jersey.

Moorestown junior Hannah Byrd-Leitner won the Group 3 vault with a personal-best and meet-record 12-7 clearance. Haddon Heights senior Quin Zacamy – the No. 4 seed – won the Group 2 vault with a big PR of 12-0 – and Haddonfield junior Rebecca Hoover – who shares the No. 1 New Jersey ranking this year at 12-8 – placed 2nd to Zacamy on misses in Group 2.

Going into the Meet of Champions Wednesday, Byrd-Leitner is the No. 1 seed and Zacamy, Hoover and Dumont sophomore Jenna Monaco – 3rd in Group at 12-0 – share the No. 2 seed.

On the all-time state outdoor list, Hoover is tied for 5th with her 12-8 from ther Camden County Championships at Haddon Township last month. Byrd-Leitner is No. 10 with hr 12-7 on Friday. On the all-time South Jersey list, they are No. 2 and 4, and Zacamy is tied for 5th.

For Byrd-Leitner, her PR was one inch over her 12-6 from an indoor meet in Conshohocken, Pa., last Dec. 30. She cleared 11-7 last spring. HBL was clean through 12-0, where she had the event won, and then had the bar raised to the meet-record 12-7, which she cleared on her 2nd attempt. She gave 12-9 three tries as well. She’s Moorestown’s first state champion since another pole vaulter, Lauren Tauscher, who won Group 3 at 11-6 in 2009.

Hoover’s PR is 12-8 from last month, and she’s been clearing 11-6 or better routinely since the start of indoors.

But Zacamy is new to this rarified territory.

She first cleared 10-0 last spring and had improved to 11-6 by the Meet of Champions, where she placed 8th. She hit 11-0 indoors and took 2nd at Group 2 states, behind only Hoover. She placed 2nd to Hoover at the Camden County meet at 11-6 before hitting 12-0 for the first time on Friday on her 1st attempt.

The last South Jersey girl to win the Meet of Champions pole vault was Seneca’s Brittany Raffo at 12-0 in 2016. The only ther winner since the event was added in 1999 is O’Reilly in 2003 and 2004 at 11-6 both years,

Riverside senior Jamir Brown, Woodbury senior Peyton Shute and Pennsauken sophomore Sianni Wynn have added their names to an elite list of South Jersey athletes who’ve won three individual events at the same state track championships.

Brown won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.81, the 400-meter hurdles in 53.52 and the long jump with a PR 23-8 ¾ at the Group 1 Championships this weekend in Somerset, Shute won the 800 in a PR 1:52.05, the 1.600 in 4:16.43 and the 3,200 in 9:26.98 in the same meet and Wynn swept the 100 in 11.52, the 200 in 23.79 and the 400 with a PR 53.45 at the Group 4 Championships, also in Somerset.

⮕ Brown is the first Riverside boy to turn in a state meet triple, and he’s actually the first Riverside boy to win two events at states the same year. The last Ram to win any event on the track at states was Ron Brock in the 1,600 in 1990. Brown is Riverside’s first 400 hurdles winner at states since Don Dmochowski in 1982 and first-ever winner in the high hurdles or long jump.

⮕ Shute is the first triple winner to sweep the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 since older brother Brady Shute turned the trick in 2022. They are the only South Jersey boys ever to sweep the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at states. Three girls have done it – Glassboro’s Ruth Lockbaum in 1986, Haddonfield’s Erin Donohue in 1998, 1999 and 2000 (along with the javelin in 1999 and 2000) and Haddonfield’s Briana Gess in 2015.

⮕ Wynn is only the third South Jersey girl ever to pull off a triple state title sweep in Group 4. Pemberton’s Lillian Rivera won the shot, disc and javelin in 1984 and Winslow’s Krystal Cantey recorded an insane quad win – 200, 400, high hurdles, intermediate hurdles – in 2005. Wynn is the first to sweep the 100, 200 and 400. She’s Pennsauken’s first triple winner at states and the 4th sophomore, along with Donohue in 1999, Gess in 2015 and Willingboro’s Nester Wea last year.

The mighty Winslow Township girls program, which won seven straight state titles from 2013 through 2019, is back on top of Group 3.

And they’re not going away anytime soon.

Led by tireless sophomore Ma’Syiah Brawner, Winslow won its 9th state championship but first in five years this weekend, coming out on top of an epic battle with Camden County neighbor Timber Creek in the Group 3 meet at Delsea.

The only schools to win more state titles than Winslow are Notre Dame and Pope John XXIII with 12 titles each and Columbia – the only public school with more – which has won 10.

Winslow finished with an 84-76 margin of victory over sprint powerhouse Timber Creek, and underclassmen scored 71 of Winslow’s 84 points, including 55 by freshmen and sophomores. Ocean City, led by senior Sophia Curtis, finished 4th with 44 points.

Winslow had 21 individual entries in the meet and 15 of them scored.

Brawner continues to dazzle with three PRs, winning her 2nd straight long jump at 19-3 ½, taking 2nd to Curtis in a wild triple jump with a 40-2 ½ and clearing 5-5 in the high jump. She also medaled in the 100-meter hurdles.

But she had plenty of help.

Sophomore Olivia Okaro PR’d in three events as well, taking 2nd in a fast 400 in 56.08, 4th in the 100 in 12.06 after an 11.98 in the trials and running 5th in the 200 in 24.69.

Dominique Clement, Winslow’s one scoring senior, had a huge weekend with 3rd-place finishes in the hurdles with a PR 14.36 and 3rd in the 200 with a PR 24.57. She also medaled in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.90.

Amazing freshman Cinniya Robinson ran a monster lifetime-best 55.60 to win the 400. That’s the 4th-fastest freshman time in South Jersey history. She also took 4th in the intermediates in 1:02.72, also a personal best.

And junior Brook-lynn Roberts popped a 140-0 for 2nd place in the discus.

Okaro, freshman Tristan Hughes, junior Ava Millner and Robinson ran 2nd in the 4-by-8 with a school-record 9:34.65.

As we wrote about earlier, Timber Creek got monster 1-2 finishes in the 100 and 200 from senior Naylah Jones and junior Ryan Jennings. Jones won the 100 in 11.23 and the 200 with a state-record 23.29 in the fastest sprint double in New Jersey history, and Jennings ran 11.65 [11.62 in the trials] and 23.91.

Senior Guerlande Pierre and junior Billie Frazier placed 2nd and 5th in the 100-meter hurdles for Timber Creek, Pierre in a PR 14.22 and Frazier 14.92. Freshman Taylor Gaines ran 57.59 for 5th place in a very fast Group 3 400.

Timber Creek also won the 400-meter relay with a Group 3 and overall meet-record 46.95 and the 1,600 relay in 3:51.81. Naylah Jones, Jennings, Frazier and sophomore Samiyah Puckett ran on the 4-by-1. Previous 4-by-1 meet record was Winslow’s 47.19 in Group 3 in 2018. The 4-by-4 lineup was freshman Amaya Jones, Jennings, Gaines and Frazier.

Mainland junior Sofia Day had a super impressive distance double, winning the 800 in 2:12.55 and the 1,600 in 4:59.37. Both are PRs.

Curtis won the triple jump with that monster last-jump . She also placed 2nd in the 400 hurdles in 59.80, 5th-fastest in South Jersey history, and 5th in the long jump at 17-5 ¼.

Ocean City also got a nice double from junior Maeve Smith, who was 3rd in both the 1,600 in a PR 5:01.20 and 3,200 in 11:06.37. And Ocean City won the 4-by-8 in 9:25.06.

Moorestown junior Hannah Byrd-Leitner won the pole vault with a PR 12-7, the 4th-best jump in South Jersey history. She broke the Group 3 meet record of 12-6 set in 2018 by Delsea’s Ashley Preston by an inch and tied the overall meet record set last year by Emma Keating of Pompton Lakes.

Northern Burlington junior Liliah Gordon ran 10:51.94 for 2nd in the 3,200.

Absegami junior Jaidah Garrett popped her 1st 19-foot long jump, taking 2nd to Brawner with a 19-0 ½. She also placed 5th in the triple jump with a 37-9 ½.

Going into the 1,600-meter relay, the final event of the weekend, the girls Group 4 standings showed Hillsborough on top with 46 points, Washington Township with 43 and Eastern and Pennsauken with 40 each.

Washington Township didn’t have a 4-by-4 team entered and Pennsauken had a very good team lined up but Sianni Wynn was out of events after she won the 100, 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 400-meter relay.

Realistically, the meet was going to come down to Hillsborough and Eastern.

Eastern had to score at least seven more points than Hillsborough to win the meet outright or six more points to tie and win a share of its first state title in 21 years.

It’s amazing that after 17 events and two days how many track meets come down to the 4-by-4.

Eastern went into the 4-by-4 as the No. 1 seed based on its 3:53.42 at sectionals and Hillsborough was the 8th seed at 4:01.39 but clearly capable of going faster.

Union had won the 2nd of three sections of the Group 4 1,600 in 4:00.69 and West Orange had run 4:00.88 in that race, so that was also something to keep in mind. Those times could potentially benefit Eastern if Hillsborough ran slower than 4:00.69.

Eastern had to stay in front of Hillsborough – and several places in front of Hillsborough – but you also can’t race worried about another team.

Eastern leadoff Lomaria Tengbeh got the Vikings started off with a nice 60.58 split and Eva Sprewell followed with a 60.94, but at the second handoff Eastern was sitting in 4th and Hillsborough 6th.

But Eastern has two hammers at the end of its 4-by-4.

Junior Samantha Osei-Kyei, who PR’d with a 2:15.70 for 5th in a hot 800 meters on Friday, moved Eastern from 4th to 2nd behind only host Franklin Township with a 57.27 split while Hillsborough came through three legs in 6th, some 4 ½ seconds back.

Hillsborough has a very good anchor in senior Sabrina Sardar, who had just run 56.77 in the open 400. And she anchored Hillsborough with a 57.09, moving her team up from 8th into 4th.

But Eastern has sophomore Natalie Dumas, who had just PR’d with a 54.74 in the open 400, placing 2nd to Wynn. And she wasn’t going to let anybody get in front of her. Her 54.55 split brought Eastern across the line 1st in 3:53.32, and when Franklin finished 2nd in 3:55.53 and Piscataway 3rd in 3:58.05, Eastern had clinched at least a share of the state Group 4 championship.

Sardar split 57.13 and Hillsborough finished 4th, less than half a second off Union’s winning time in the previous section.

So Eastern got 10 points for a final total of 50 and Hillsborough got four points for a final total of 50, and for the first time in 24 years the girls Group 4 meet finished in a tie. Washington Township and Pennsauken wound up 3rd and 4th.

The last tie in Group 4 came in 2000, when Washington Township and Trenton both scored 33 points at Egg Harbor Township. The last tie in any group was in 2015, when Winslow and Northern Highlands both scored 62 points at South Plainfield.

Co-champs are still champs, and Eastern’s clutch relay running had clinched a share of the 3rd state title in school history. Eastern also won Group 4 in 2002 with Jenelle Wilson winning the 400 and Caitlin Cielo the javelin and and in 2003 with Jennifer Jackson winning the 100 and 200.

Also for Eastern, Dumas won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.83, senior Zoe Goldberg won the javelin at 140-9 with senior teammate Aniyah Smith 5th with a 119-3 throw,

Eastern also placed 2nd in the 4-by-8 (behind Hillsborough), with freshman Theresa Albertson, Osei-Kyei, junior Emi Loverdi and Dumas running a school-record 9:31.32 on Dumas’s blazing 2:11.27 anchor. Previous school record was 9:37.81 at the 1998 East Coast Relays at Morristown.

Washington Township was led by senior Dahlia Beasley, who won the high jump at 5-6 on a tiebreaker over Williamstown junior Addison Inge, placed 2nd in the long jump at 18-10 and ran 3rd in the 200 in 25.08 for 24 total points. Soph Cali Lacovara placed 2nd in the pole vault at 10-6 and junior Dakota Jones ran 14.84 for 3rd in the 100-meter hurdles.

We wrote about Wynn, but her ridiculous quad win was 11.52, 23.79, 53.45 and an anchor on Pennsauken’s 47.72 relay win. Yikes.

Other Group 4 highlights: Cherokee’s 4-x-1 with sophomore Rylan Cieslik, senior Madison Van Haren, junior Veronica Ashcraft and junior Morgan Shank placed 2nd to Pennsauken in 48.38, and Rancocas Valley senior Lauren Fadairo popped a big 38-7 ¾ triple jump for 2nd place.
