Nester Wea, Kaila Speight, Maya Bolden lead Willingboro girls to Central Jersey Group 2 championship!!!!!!

Junior Nester Wea picked up two 1sts and a 2nd, ran on the winning relay team and led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 55, and the Willingboro girls won their 4th indoor sectional title Sunday at the Bubble.

Willingboro outscored Rumson-Fair Haven 78-61 to win the Central Jersey Group 1 championship. Boro won South Jersey Group 1 in 2010, South Jersey Group 3 in 2016 and Central Jersey Group 1 in 2020.

Wea won the hurdles in 8.62 and the 55 in 7.33 and ran 58.37 for 2nd in the 400. In the 55, freshman Maya Bolden placed 2nd with a PR 7.40 and sophomore Kaila Speight was 3rd in 7.46. Junior Sunny Oyibo was 4th in a PR 9.19. And in the 400, Speight ran 59.23 for 3rd.

That’s 52 points in the 55, hurdles and 400.

Sophomore Jaden Murry joined Wea, Speight and Bolden on the 1,600-meter relay team, which

In the field, senior Naa’rah Andrews – Willingboro’s only senior point scorer – placed 2nd in the high jump with a 5-0 clearance, and junior Channel Swain took 2nd in the shot put with a 38-4 throw.

Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo runs blazing anchor leg as Penn shatters Ivy League 4×400 record at Clemson!!!!!!!!

Paul VI graduate Aliya Garozzo, a senior at Penn, ran a blazing 52.47 anchor on the Quakers’ 1,600-meter relay team that shattered the Ivy League record Saturday.

Penn ran 3:29.86 at the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson. The Quakers won their section and finished 3rd overall behind powerhouse programs Georgia [3:29.28] and Texas A&M [3:29.58], who ran in the final section.

Christiana Nwachuku, Jocelyn Niemiec and Isabella Whittaker ran the first three legs for Penn, whose time is No. 9 in NCAA Division 1 this year

The previous Penn school record was 3:32.44 with the same lineup two weeks ago at the Terrier Classic at Boston University.

The previous Ivy League record? No idea. Penn’s web site said this was an Ivy record but the genius that wrote the story didn’t bother saying what the previous record was. You had one job.

[edit: OK, I found an Ivy League record book and it shows the previous indoor 4×4 record as 3:34.17 by Harvard last year. Doesn’t say where they did it but on TFRRS it looks like it was at last year’s Tiger Paw Invite at Clemson. Penn also apparently  broke the overall Ivy League record of 3:29.98 that Harvard ran in 2016. Of course the Ivy League record book doesn’t say where they did that either, but it was at NCAA Division 1 Eastern Prelims in Jacksonville, which was 3:29.98.  A common theme with track and field is that people involved in it don’t believe details are important.]

Ivy League track record book but they only show outdoor marks, and the outdoor 4-by-4 record was 3:29.98 by Harvard in 2016, but of course they don’t say where they did that. I just looked it up on TFRRS and it was at the Division 1 East Regional in Jacksonville. Still no clue what the previous indoor Ivy record was. Common theme with track and field is that many people involved in it don’t care about details. I’ll try to find the previous Ivy indoor record tonight].

Anyway, Garozzo was the Ivy League 500-meter champ last winter at 1:14.81 and has since run 1:12.22, No. 4 in school history. She ran 59.96 in the intermediates last spring, No. 5 in school history. She’s also No. 5 in the 60-meter hurdles [8.49].

Ajani Dwyer and Malachi James run 3rd- and 5th-fastest 60-meter dash times in state history at Millrose!!!!!!!!

Washington Township’s Ajani Dwyer and Burlington City’s Malachi James ran the 3rd- and 5th-fastest 60-meter dash times in state history Sunday at ther 116th annual Millrose Games at the Armory.

Dwyer and James finished 2nd and 3rd behind LSU football commit Jelani Watkins of Klein Forerst High in Houston. The race produced three of the four-fastest times in the U.S. this year.

Watkins ran a lifetime-best and U.S. No. 1 6.68, Dwyer ran U.S. No. 2 6.76 and James U.S. No. 4 6.78.

Dwyer has a 55 PR of 6.18 and James 6.31. Dwyer’s 6.76 is equivalent to 6.30 for 55 meters and James’ 6.78 equals 6.32.

Neither Dwyer or James got the start they wanted. They were 7th- and 6th-fastest out of the blocks, 6th and 5th through 20 meters and 4th and 6th through 30 meters, and in a loaded field like this it’s tough to make up that kind of ground.

Dwyer and James will meet again over 55 meters at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze and hopefully back at the Armory at Easterns and then we’ll see them race this spring for the first time at 100 and 200 meters.

WINSLOW GIRLS EDGE TIMBER CREEK IN BLAZING RECORD-SETTING MILLROSE GAMES 4X4!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Winslow and Timber Creek girls locked up in a historic 4-by-4 battle at the 116th annual Millrose Games at the Armory Sunday morning.

In an electrifying battle that produced the 6th- and 7th-fastest times in the U.S. this year, Winslow edged Timber Creek by 20 inches.

Winslow freshman Skyhe Seamon, sophomore Olivia Okara, senior Djassi Dean and freshman Cinniya Robinson ran 3:49.50, and Timber Creek senior Chloe Jones, juniors Billie Frazier and Ryan Jennings and senior Naylah Jones ran 3:49.59.

It was the first time in state history two schools have run faster than 3:50 in the same indoor race.

Winslow and Timber Creek are the first two South Jersey schools to run sub-3:50 indoors in 21 years and their times are fastest by any New Jersey schools in five years and 10th and 11th in state history. They’re 4th and 5th in South Jersey history.

The last South Jersey school to run sub-3:50 was Willingboro in 2003 with Halimah Bashir, Rhea Mann, Channel Hamilton and Okechi Ogbuokiri setting what was then the state record of 3:45.37 at New York Nationals, also at the Armory.

Now two did it in the same race.

Chloe Jones opened with a 57.91 split and Seamon a 58.86, but Union Catholic held a slight lead at the first handoff. Okara gave Winslow the lead with a 56.11 carry, but Frazier’s 58.90 leg had Timber Creek a close 3rd behind Winslow and U.C.

Dean ran a 58.29 third leg for Winslow, and Jennings split 56.47 to move Timber Creek past Union Catholic into 2nd at the final handoff, and Winslow and Timber Creek were in a virtual deadlock going into the final leg – Winslow at 2:53.25 and Timber Creek 2:53.27.

Robinson and Naylah Jones didn’t disappoint, both running blazing anchor legs, with Robinson’s 56.25 just a fraction of a second faster than Jones’ 56.33.

Union Catholic finished a distant 3rd in 3:53.31.

Woodbury’s Peyton Shute runs 4th-fastest mile in South Jersey history!!!!!!

Woodbury senior Peyton Shute ran the 4th-fastest mile in South Jersey history Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston.

Shute ran 4:13.36, fastest ever by a South Jersey Group 1 runner and 3rd-fastest by a New Jersey Group 1 miler behind Shore Regional’s Drew Maher in 2018 [4:11.10] and John Carlotti of Bernards in 1983 [4:11.3].

His time is fastest in New Jersey this year, bumping Luke Schagelin of Morris Knolls, who ran 4:13.92 at the Armory last month.

Shute ran within about half a second of the Gloucester County indoor record of 4:12.79 set by Kingsway’s Kyle Rakitis at 2022 Ocean Breeze Nationals.

Shute split 62.85, 63.33, 64.23 and 62.98, closing in 31.17.

The Valentine Invite is always the deepest and fastest mile in the world.

The race – or races – produced 43 sub-4 finishers, 93 under 4:05, 168 under 4:10 and 302 under 4:20.

Shute was one of four South Jersey milers to run between 4:13.19 and 4:13.55 in the race. Audubon graduate Scott Hubbard, a Rowan sophomore, ran 4:13.19; West Deptford graduate Jacob Cobb, a sophomore at MIT, ran 4:13.21; and Rakitis, a junior at Rutgers, ran 4:13.55.

Hubbard’s previous PR was a 4:18.03 last week at Ocean Breeze. We’ll have more on his race soon. Cobb’s previous PR was 4:15.50 last week, also at Boston University.

Shute has an outdoor mile PR of 4:12.13 from last year’s West Philly Nationals. For comparison purposes, a 4:13.36 full mile is the equivalent of a 4:11.89 for 1,600 meters.

Egg Harbor’s Isabella Leak runs 6th-fastest mile in Monmouth history!!!!!!

Isabella Leak, an Egg Harbor Township graduate, ran one of the fastest miles in Monmouth history Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University.

Leak ran 4:53.52, 6th-fastest on the all-time Monmouth list.

There haven’t been a lot of fast women milers from South Jersey lately, and it looks like Leak’s time may actually be fastest by a South Jersey college runner since Haddonfield’s Greta Feldman ran 4:41.62 for Princeton at the 2013 Ivy League Championships in Cambridge, Mass.

Kylie Anicic from Kingsway ran 4:54.93 unpressed and probably could have run faster but focused on the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 at Edinboro. Rider’s Kristin Siegle from Buena ran a 4:22.45 1,500, which is the equivalent of a 4:43.45 mile, but her fastest actual mile was a 4:55.34.

Briana Gess ran 4:51.44 at 2015 Nationals while she was at Haddonfield but never ran a mile during her time at Virginia. Amanda Eller of Millville ran a 4:27.91 for 1,500 meters at Monmouth when she won the 2012 Northeast Conference title but her fastest mile was a 4:58.57.

Anybody else?

In any case, Leak had a high school PR of 5:11.28 from 2020 indoor sectionals, so a 4:53.52 by her junior year of college is one heck of a progression.

Leak races at the CAA Championships are Feb. 22-23 at the Armory.

Austin Gabay runs 2nd-fastest 3,000 by a South Jersey alum, shatters Duke record, Kevin Antczak not far back with a huge PR!!!!!!!!

Austin Gabay ran the 2nd-fastest 3,000 in South Jersey history Saturday in Boston, breaking the Duke school record along the way.

Gabay, a Cinnaminson graduate, ran 7:58.94 at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational, lowering his PR from 8:01.79, which he ran last month on the same track.

The only faster time by a South Jersey runner is a 7:57.65 by Absegami graduate Ford Palmer in New York in January 2017.

He broke the Duke record of 7:59.84 set by Nick Dahl at the 2022 Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

In the same race, Mainland Regional graduate Kevin Antczak, a junior at North Carolina State, ran a big PR of 8:04.87, lowering his PR more than 10 seconds from an 8:12.92 he ran two weeks ago in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Antczak’s time is No. 5 in South Jersey history. North Carolina State doesn’t have an all-time top-10 list or even school records on its web site. It barely has a web site.

Nine of the top 18 times in South Jersey history have been recorded in the last two weeks! That’s incredible!

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time South Jersey alumni 3,000 list. Who’s missing?

Ajani Dwyer, Malachi James set to renew their torrid rivalry on a national stage Sunday at the 116th Millrose Games!!!!!!!!

Ajani Dwyer and Malachi James, two of the four-fastest sprinters in the U.S., will renew their rivalry Sunday at the 116th annual Millrose Games.

Dwyer, a senior at Washington Township, and James, a senior at Burlington City, are entered in a loaded field for the high school boys 60-meter dash, scheduled for 11:14 a.m. at the Armory.

Dwyer is No. 1 in the U.S. at 55 meters with his 6.18 at the Millrose Trials at the Armory last month and James is tied for No. 4 nationally with his 6.31 at the South Jersey Group 1 sectionals on a slower track at the Bubble earlier this month.

Also in the field are U.S. No. 3 Tristan Wright of Franklin County High in Rocky Mount, Va., who ran 6.29 at a meet in Lynchburg, Va., last month, and U.S. co-No. 4 Antwan Hughes of Parkland Magnet in Winston-Salem, N.C., who ran 6.31 this past weekend in Winston-Salem.

Although the Millrose trials are held over the traditional 55-meter high school distance, the race Sunday morning will be over the college and pro 60-meter distance because that’s what the track and timing system are laid out for in a meet like this.

Neither Dwyer or James has ever run an official 60, but Dwyer’s 6.18 converts to a 6.74 for 60 meters and James’ 6.31 converts to 6.88.

Damiere Byrd of Timber Creek and Mario Heslop of Frankin Township share the state record over 60 meters at 6.70, Byrd in 2011 in Seattle and Heslop in 2019 at the Armory.

Despite his accomplishments, Dwyer is still a newcomer to track. He never ran before last spring and only ran a handful of meets. This is his first indoor season. James, the Meet of Champions 100 and 200 winner as a Willingboro sophomore in the spring of 2022, missed most of last year with injuries.

So even though they rank 1st and 7th in state history at 55 meters and attend schools 30 miles apart, Dwyer and James have only raced each other twice – at the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival in late December and at the Millrose Trials. At Ocean Breeze, Dwyer edged James, 6.33 to 6.36. And at Millrose – after qualifying in different heats, Dwyer in 6.27 and James in 6.38 – Dwyer ran that 6.18 in the final, with James 2nd in 6.42.

Dwyer has committed to Penn State, and James signed with Syracuse to play football.

I put together an all-time New Jersey 60-meter dash sub-7 list that’s a lock to be re-written tomorrow:

6.70 … Damiere Byrd [Timber Creek], 2011
6.75 … Fitzroy Ledgister [St. Peter’s Prep], 2022
6.77 … Fabian France [Bergen Catholic], 2022
6.78 … Joe Dawkins [Hackensack], 1995
6.83 … Jamar Ervin [Camden], 2001
6.86 … Maxwell Booker [Essex Catholic], 2001
6.86 … Louis Akpadago [Nottingham], 2020
6.87 … Chris Church [Millville], 2007
6.89 … Mike Fields [Roselle], 1995
6.89 … Mekhi Stafford [Ewing], 2023
6.91 … Samuel Thomas [Northern Burlington], 2023
6.93 … A.J. Bunton [West Deptford], 2006
6.95 … Bruce Black [Hamilton], 2006
6.99 … Brayshul Tuten [Paulsboro], 2021

Here are some other South Jersey athletes to look for Sunday!

9 a.m. Men’s Distance Medley: Shore Athletic Club has Cherokee graduates Mike Zurzolo and Jack Shea running the 800 and mile legs. Garden State Track Club has Pleasantville graduate Isaac Clarke running the 800.

10:24 a.m. Suburban Girls 4×4: Timber Creek, Winslow Township and Washington Township are all in the six-team field. They rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 11 in the state this year at 3:53.66, 3:56.86 and 4:03.17.

10:30 a.m. Suburban Boys 4×4: Winslow Townshp will represent South Jersey. Winslow is N.J. #6 at 3:24.64.

11:12 a.m. Girls Triple Jump: Ocean City senior Sophia Curtis is one of nine entrants. Curtis, a Virginia Tech commit, No. 1 is No. 11 nationally this winter at 39-11 but jumped 41-3 ¼ last winter to place 3rd at Boston Nationals. She also won the Meet of Champions outdoors at 40-7 ½.

11:14 a.m. Boys 60-meter dash: James and Dwyer will line up with seven other sprinters from around the country.

11:31 a.m. Girls 300-meter dash: Pennsauken sophomore Sianni Wynn will run in the first of three sections. Wynn ran 39.17 last year, No. 6 in state history.

1:03 p.m. Women’s 60-meter hurdles: Olympic silver medalist and 2016 world champion Nia Ali of Pleasantville is in the nine-woman field. Ali is No. 8 in the world this year with a 7.89 earlier this month in Astana, Kazakhstan, her fastet time in four years. Ali’s lifetime best is 7.80 in Albuquerque in 2014, No. 31 in world history.

1:17 p.m. Women’s 60-meter dash: Olympic gold medalist English Gardner of Eastern is one of eight women lining up for the dash. Gardner hasn’t raced this winter but ran her lifetime best of 7.10 when she won Millrose in 2019.

Wilson’s Dennisha Page PRs again for Tennessee, now 19th-fastest in the world at 60 meters!!!!!!!!

Wilson graduate Dennisha Page ran 60 meters in 7.18 seconds Saturday, the No. 19 time in the world this year.

Page came into the season with a 60 PR of 7.26 from the Tyson Randall Invitational last February in Fayetteville, Ark., as a Rutgers junior. She’s now a senior at Tennessee, and she PR’d two weeks ago with a 7.23 at a meet in College Station, Texas, and lowered it Saturday at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C.

World No. 7 Jacious Sears, Page’s teammate, won the race in 7.13. She ran 7.07 earlier this month and 7.04 last year. Florida State’s Dajaz Defrand and Page both ran 7.18, with Defrand credited for 2nd place with a 7.171 to Page’s 7.174.

Page is now tied for 19th in the world and tied for 8th among U.S. women. Her time is 4th-fastest ever by a New Jersey sprinter, behind Montclair’s Me’Lisa Barber [7.01 in Moscow, Russia, in 2006] Eastern’s English Gardner [7.10 in New York in 2019] and Montclair’s Mikele Barber [7.14 in Albuqurque in 2010].

She’s also tied for 4th-fastest in NCAA Division 1, although it looks like some performances from this weekend haven’t been added to the TFRRS database yet.

Page’s time is No. 4 in Tennessee history behind Searas last year [7.04], Courtney Champion in 2007 [7.15] amd Joella Lloyd [in 2021 [7.15].

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time New Jersey 60-meter dash top-10:

7.01 … Me’Lisa Barber [Montclair], 2006, Moscow, Russia
7.10 … English Gardner [Eastern], 2019, New York
7.14 … Mikele Barber [Montclair], 2010, Albuquerque

And here are all the South Jersey sprinters I found at 7.40 or faster. Michelle Glover would be on this list, but she never ran a 60. She did run 6.74 for 55 meters, which would have put her at 7.35 at the same pace for another five meters.

Huge 3,000 PR moves Northern Burlington’s Keira Mansure up to No. 6 spot on all-time Rider performance list!!!!!!

Keira Mansure of Northern Burlington ran a huge 3,000 PR Friday in Boston and moved into the No. 6 spot on the all-time Rider list.

Mansure ran 9:54.48 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational  at Boston University, trimming nearly half a minute off her previous PR of 10:20.91 from a meet in December at the Armory. Mansure is a sophomore at Rider but this is her first year of indoor track, so she’s a freshman eligibility-wise this winter.

Mansure’s 3,200 PR at Northern was 11:37.21, which is the equivalent of a 10:49.38 for 3,000 meters, so she’s improved nearly a minute since arriving in Lawrenceville.

On the Rider all-time list Mansure is now No. 6 but only three seconds out of the No. 2 spot and about 7 ½ seconds off the school record of 9:46.96 set by Emily Ritter of Sussex Tech of Georgetown, Del., at the 2015 Gotham Cup at the Armory.
