Cherokee’s Jess Woodard places 4th at U.S. Nationals with huge throw on final attempt!!!!!!

Jess Woodard popped her best shot put throw of the year on her final attempt to place 4th at the U.S. Championships in Albuquerque Friday.

Woodard has entered the U.S. indoor or outdoor championships 11 times and finished in the top 10 each time. She’s now placed 5th or better in the last five U.S. championships.

Woodard, a 2013 Cherokee graduate, had a best throw of 58-5 ¾ through five rounds but threw 60-11 ¼ to move into 3rd place. Adelaide Aquilla followed with a 61-5 ¾ to bump Woodard back into 4th, but it was still Woodard’s best throw since September, when she finished her outdoor season with a 61-8 ¾ throw at the Memorial van Damme in Boudewijnstadion in Brussels, Belgium,

It was Woodard’s best indoor throw since her indoor PR 61-4 ¼ to place 3rd at the 2022 USATC Indoor Championships in Spokane, Wash.

Woodard opened with a 57-10 ½, 55-11 ¾, a foul, 58-5 ¾ and another foul before closing with her 42nd lifetime 60-foot throw.

Woodard’s 60-11 ¼ is No. 11 in the world this year.

Woodard is No. 15 in U.S. history with her 63-7 ¾ in Eugene in June of 2022.

Paul VI’s Shaelan McNally runs huge 1,600 PR, places 2nd at states!!!!!!

Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally ran the 11th-fastest indoor 1,600 or mile in South Jersey indoor history Friday at the state Parochial A championships at the Bubble.

Racing on a slow, flat track at the Bubble, McNally placed 2nd in 4:57.06, 5th-fastest time ever by a South Jersey miler at the Bubble and fastest ever by a South Jersey parochial school runner.

McNally placed 2nd to Union Catholic freshman Paige Sheppard, who was the fastest middle school runner in the U.S. last year while attending Hillsborough Middle School.

McNally broke her own school record of 4:59.43, converted from a 5:01.18 full mile at Armory Nationals last March.

The only South Jersey girls who’ve run faster at a state indoor meet are Delsea’s Celine Mazzi in 2014 [4:56.25] and Nicole Clifford of Cherokee in 2022 [4:53.85].

No splits available – thanks, Bubble! – but McNally finished nearly 14 seconds clear of 3rd place. McNally’s outdoor PR is 5:01.44 from the South Jersey Elite at Delsea last May, so Friday’s 4:57.06 is a lifetime best.

It’s also No. 4 in Camden County history, behind three Haddonfield runners – Olympian Erin Donohue [4:49.46 in 2001 converted from yards], Briana Gess’s 4:51.60 in 2016 and Olympian Marielle Hall in 2010 [4:55.04 converted from yards].

Peyton Shute runs 2nd-fastest 3,200 in Gloucester County history, fastest in N.J. this year!!!!!!

Woodbury senior Peyton Shute ran the fastest 3,200 by a New Jersey runner this year Monday at Ocean Breeze and just missed the Gloucester County record.

Shute won the 3,200 at the final South Jersey Coaches Association meet in 9:13.90, winning by a little over 200 meters, with Cherokee freshman Benjamin Realley 2nd in 9:49.57.

The only faster time in Gloucester County was recorded by Delsea’s Andrew Littlehales when he was 5th in the 2012 Meet of Champions at the Bubble.

Shute’s previous indoor PR was a 9:14.51 at the state Group 1 meet at the Bubble last year. He’s run 9:11.11 outdoor at the 2023 Gloucester County Championships at Deptford.

Realley’s time is fastest by a South Jersey freshman since Triton’s Robert Rawls ran 9:45.41 at the 2008 Group 3 sectionals at the Bubble.

Realley has also run 1:59.75 and 4:28.75 this winter. He’s the No. 2 freshman in New Jersey at 800 meters, behind Kingsway’s Ryan Duffy [1:59.63], No. 1 in the 1,600 and No. 2 in the 3,200 behind Aaron David Wyrsch of Southern Regional, who ran 9:38.85 at Group 4 sectionals this past weekend at the Bubble.

A remarkably rare achievement for Woodbury junior sprinter Marquis Taylor!!!!!!

He’s run 6.43 for 55 meters, 21.98 for the 200 and 49.24, and that puts Woodbury junior Marquis Taylor in a very small group of South Jersey sprinters who’ve run sub-6.50, sub-22 and sub-50 at any point in their high school track career.

A group of one.

Taylor, who had PRs of 6.71 and 23.68 last indoor season and never ran the 400, has blossomed in the last few weeks as one of New Jersey’s fastest and most versatile sprinters.

He ran his 55 PR of 6.43 at South Jersey Group 1 sectionals behind Burlington City’s Malachi James and he ran PRs of 21.98 and 49.24 Monday at Ocean Breeze. Taylor didn’t break 22 or 50 outdoors last spring. He had PRs of 22.07 and 50.42 last year.

He’s the only sprinter in New Jersey this year and only the 7th in state history to run sub-6.50, sub-22 and sub-50. The events are so different – not a lot of guys excel at both 55 and 400 meters – that it’s naturally a short list.

Adian Sanderson, Ewing, 2003: 6.41, 21.34, 47.76
Akeem Lindo, East Orange, 2018: 6.37, 21.73, 49.06
Mario Heslop, Franklin Township, 2019: 6.26, 20.90, 48.71
Shamali Whittle, Nottingham, 2022: 6.33, 21.05, 49.17
Xavier Donaldson, Seton Hall Prep, 2023: 6.44, 21.07, 47.35
Jack Ahart, Kinnelon, 2023: 6.49, 21.83, 48.28
Marquis Taylor, Woodbury, 2024: 6.43, 21.98, 49.24

Some pretty good company right there for Taylor, who appears to be the first New Jersey junior ever to record that triple.

He goes into Group 1 states this weekend as the No. 2 seed in both the 55 and 400. Of course, there is no 200 at the state level in New Jersey. Top seed in the 55 is Burlington senior Malachi James and top seed in the 400 is Clayton junior Alexander Osayemi.

Taylor’s 6.43 is tied for No. 14 in South Jersey history and tied for No. 4 in Gloucester County history with another Woodbury sprinter, Anthony Averett, who ran 6.43 in 2013 before playing football at Alabama and in the NFL for five years. It’s No. 6 in New Jersey this year and No. 2 in Group 1, behind only James’ 6.31 at sectionals. It also makes him the No. 3 underclassman in New Jersey. The only Group 1 sprinters in South Jersey history to run faster are James and Glassboro’s James Brown, who ran 6.38 when he won the 2009 Meet of Champions.

Taylor’s 21.98 is No. 10 in South Jersey history and also No. 4 in Gloucester County history, behind Ajani Dwyer, who set a South Jersey-record 21.25 earlier this month; Woodbury’s Darrell Bush, who ran 21.53 in 2012; and Washington Township’s Todd Dutch, who ran 21.62 in 2001. It’s also a South Jersey junior class record, breaking the mark of 22.04 by Holy Spirit’s A.J. Dawson in 2013.

And that 49.24 is also 4th-fastest in Gloucester County history and fastest by a junior. Interestingly, Taylor and Clayton’s Alexander Osayemi ran the two-fastest 400 times in Gloucester County history by underclassmen in the same race on Monday. Osayemi ran 49.40.

Delsea shot putter Jonathan Harris joins 60-foot club!!!!!!

Delsea junior Jonathan Harris became the ninth indoor 60-footer in South Jersey history Tuesday at the Cherokee Throwdown.

Harris threw 60-0 ¼, becoming the second 60-foot thrower in New Jerey this year. Joshua Huisman of St. Rose of Belmar threw a state-leading 63-10 at the Monmouth County Championships at the Bubble last month.

Harris becomes Delsea’s third 60-footer, joining Jason Nwosu, who threw 63-2 ½ outdoors in 2022 and World Championships medalist Josh Awotunde, who threw 61-6 outdoors in 2013. A 4th, Joe Metzger, came half an inch short of 60 feet in 2021.

Harris opened with a lifetime-best 58-8 1/2 and after two fouls hit 60-0 1/4 on his 4th and final throw. Harris’s previous PR was a 58-4 ½ at West Philly Nationals last spring, and his previous indoor PR was 58-1 ¾ this past weekend when he won the South Jersey Group 3 sectionals at the Bubble.

Harris’s throw is No. 9 on the all-time South Jersey indoor list an d No. 20 on the South Jersey combined indoor and outdoor list.

Hammonton junior Anthony Liakhnovich placed 2nd with a 56-3 on his only legal throw, just off his PR of 56-10 from last month, also at Cherokee. And Delsea senior Greg Masso [54-1], Glassboro senior Damere Lassiter [53-10 ¼], Bishop Eustace senior Shawn Brady [53-7 ½], Hammonton junior Christian Medina [PR 51-10], Paul VI junior Savien Higgs [51-5 ¾] and Delsea senior Tyler Habersham-Agbemenu [50-9 ½] all surpassed 50 feet.

Nick Kuenkel, Robert Poplau run two of the fastest 1,600s in S.J. history at Ocean Breeze!!!!!!

Cherokee seniors Nick Kuenkel and Robert Poplau tore up the Ocean Breeze track with two of the fastest 1,600 times in South Jersey indoor track history.

Kuenkel ran 4:15.26 and Poplau 4:15.34 on Monday and finished 1st and 2nd in the final South Jersey Track Caoches Association meet this winter.

Their times are 10th- and 11th-fastest in South Jersey history and fastest by Burlington County milers since Cherokee’s Marc Pelerin ran 4:15.16 at the Bishop Loughlin Games at the Armory in 2001, which converts to 4:13.68 for 1,600

They’re the 3rd and 4th-fastest times by South Jersey milers this early in a season – prior to the Meet of Champions. Pelerin ran his 4:13.68 in December, and Marty Ludwikowski of Cherry Hill West ran a 4:15.5 full mile [4:14.02 for 1,600] at the 1975 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, holding off a diving Bergen Catholic sophomore Kevin Byrne at the line in the greatest race ever run.

It’s the first time in eight year two runner from the same New Jersey high school have broken 4:16 indoors in the same year. In 2016, twins William and Colin Daly of River Dell ran 4:13.01 and 4:13.44 and went 1-2 in the Meet of Champions at the Bubble. No South Jersey school has ever had two under 4:16 the same year. Only Kingsway, Haddonfield and Ocean City have had two under 4:16 at any point.

Kuenkel and Poplau ran virtually together the whole race, with Kuenkel leading the whole way. Kuenkel ran 64.86, 64.41, 65.25 and 60.76 and Poplau 64.96, 64.59, 65.19 and 60.62. Both ran their final lap under 30 seconds, Kuenkel in 29.43 and Poplau in 29.27.

Kuenkel’s previous PR was a 4:17.98 last spring at the state Group 4 meet at Franklin, although his 4:18.94 mile at the Millrose Trials at the Armory last month converts to 4:17.44. Poplau’s PR was a 4:21.50 in New Brunswick last summer.

Poplau will run the 800 at Group 4 states Saturday and Kuenkel will run the 3,200. Poplau is the No. 3 seed in the 800 at 1:57.68 and Kuenkel is No. 1 seed in the 3,200.

Sianni Wynn smashes second South Jersey record in a week at the Armory!!!!!!

Pennsauken sophomore Sianni Wynn smashed the South Jersey record in the 300-meter dash Sunday at the 116th annual Millrose Games in New York.

Wynn ran 38.66 over a lap and a half at the Armory, breaking the South Jersey mark of 39.16 set 18 years ago by Winslow Township’s Krystal Cantey at the Archbishop Malloy Stanner Games at the Armory Jan. 14, 2006.

Wynn’s time is No. 4 in state history, just behind Union Catholic’s Rhia Randolph, who ran 38.59 in the same race (but a different section).

The South Jersey record was Wynn’s second in seven days on the Armory track, and in both cases she broke a record held by Cantey. Wynn ran 24.12 for 200 meters on Monday, breaking Cantey’s South Jersey mark of 24.38 set in the prelims of 2006 Easterns at the Armory.

Wynn ran 39.17 at the Armory last year, which at the time was 6th-fastest in state history.

Wynn is the top seed in the 400 for Saturday’s state Group 3 meet with her 56.93 at sectionals. She’s the No. 3 seed in the 55 at 7.07, behind Timber Creek junior Ryan Jennings and Timber Creek senior Naylah Jones. All three have PRs of exactly 7.00.

Willingboro boys win record 10th indoor sectional title in 14 years!!!!!!

Senior Jackson Murry won the pole vault, placed 6th in the 400 and anchored the 2nd-place 4-by-4 to help Willingboro’s powerhouse program win its 10th indoor sectional title in the last 14 years.

With 43 points in the field and 31 on the track, Willingboro outscored 2nd-place Robbinsville, 74-42.

The Chimeras’ 10 sectional titles are most by any school in any group in any section.

Willingboro also won Central Jersey Group 1 in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, Central Jersey Group 2 in 2011 and 2012, South Jersey Group 1 in 2022 and South Jersey Group 2 in 2016.

Murry cleared 13-6 to win the pole vault, sophomore teammate Zahire Bryant was 2nd at 11-0 and junior Kabir Speight 6th. That’s 19 pole vault points.

The Chimeras added 14 points in the high jump with junior Tra’san Adam clearing 6-2 for the win and junior Zaire Wormley clearing 5-10 for 4th place.

And the Willingboro shot putters added 10 points, with senior Julian Williams taking 2nd with a 50-5 throw and senior Derrick Swain placing 5th at 47-1 ½.

Senior Eric Foster won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.71 for 10 more big points

Audubon’s Scott Hubbard runs top mile in NJAC, closing in on Rowan school record!!!!!!

Scott Hubbard, who had an indoor PR of 4:31.73 at Audubon, is now the fastest miler in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Hubbard, a Rowan sophomore, ran 4:13.19 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University Saturday. His previous PR was 4:18.03 from last weekend at Ocean Breeze and before that it was 4:20.34 from a meet last indoor season at the Armory. So he’s lowered his lifetime best more than seven seconds in a little over a week.

Hubbard finished 2-100ths of a second in front of another former Colonial Conference runner, MIT sophomore Jacob Cobb from West Deptford. Current Woodbury senior Peyton Shute ran 4:13.36, making it three Colonial Conference runners finishing in the span of less than 1-5th of a second (although they were all in different sections).

Hubbard actually ran solo, finishing more than five seconds ahead of the second place in his section, Bellamy Immanuel of Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg, Va. That’s what happens when you run that much faster than your seed time.

Although Hubbard’s remarkable performance isn’t even mentioned in a brief story on Rowan’s web site, his time is fastest by a Rowan miler since 2018, when Brick Memorial’s Kevin Veltre ran 4:12.30 at the NJAC meet at Ocean Breeze.

Rowan now has four milers under 4:20 this year.

Junior Jacob Riley from North Warren ran 4:14.84 at the Armory last month, sophomore Tyler Green from Ocean City 4:18.25 in Boston this weekend – Greene’s high school PRs were 4:27.56 outdoors and 4:30.14 indoors – and freshman Johannes Rivera from Bergenfield 4:19.50 last month at Ocean Breeze. Two others are close – sophomore Cole Kolodziej from Washington Township ran 4:22.62 and freshman Joshua Cason of Camden County Vo-Tech 4:22.91, both at Ocean Breeze last month.

Delsea graduate Sean Mick set the Rowan record of 4:11.3 hand-timed at the Haverforrd Last Chance Meet on Feb. 28, 1997. Rowan’s web site doesn’t say what meet that was at.

Rowan is ranked 6th this week in NCAA Division 3 by the USTFCCA and No. 1 in the East Region.

The NJAC Championships at Ocean Breeze are scheduled for 4 p.m. a week from Monday at Ocean Breeze. Rowan has won eight straight men’s titles.
