Schalick’s David Stewart destroys Salem County triple jump record with top jump in New Jersey this year, #12 in South Jersey history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Schalick junior David Stewart smashed a 17-year-old Salem County triple jump record Friday at the Salem County Championships at Pennsville.

Stewart won the triple jump with a 47-8 ¼ on his 4th and final jump, breaking the county record of 47-5 set in 2009 by Steven Brown of Penns Grove at the 2009 state Group 1 Championships at South Plainfield.

His jump is No. 12 in South Jersey history and No. 2 by a Group 1 jumper, behind only Ryan Chance of Glassboro, who went 48-3 ¼, also at the 2009 state Group 1 meet, where he and Brown went 1-2.

Stewart’s jump moves him into the top spot in New Jersey this year, bumping Demarest’s Brendan Alef, who jumped 47-1 ¾ last week at the Penn Relays. Alef was the Meet of Champions and Easterns champion indoors.

Stewart’s jump is also best by any New Jersey Group 1 athlete in 16 years, since Boonton’s Devin Jones hit 49-11 ½ at the 2010 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield.

Not including a couple dual meet marks, Stewart’s previous PR was a 45-4 ¼ at last year’s South Jersey Group 1 Sectionals at Pennsauken.

On Friday, he opened with a 43-2, 45-2 and 45-0 before popping the record-setter on his 4th and final jump.
