Quite a long jump competition at Woodbury Saturday, with Willingboro senior Christopher Jones and Overbrook junior Jaiden Mitchell both soaring over 23 feet, three others over 22 feet and a total of 13 jumpers hitting 21 feet or better.
And thank you Woodbury Relays for having a wind guage at the long jump. All 13 jumpers over 21 feet or better were legal on their best jump. And remember, only four jumps per competitor, which makes these results even more impressive.
The top four jumpers had their best jump on their 4th and final attempt.
Jones jumped 23-3 ½ with a 0.0 tailwind on his final jump to win the event. Mitchell hit 23-2 with a 2.0 headwind to place 2nd, Winslow junior Ka’Ron Ceasar jumped 22-11 with no wind on his final jump and junior David Stewart of Schalick hit 22-3 ¾ on his last attempt with a 1.5 headwind. Winslow senior Zyaire Rothmiller-McIntosh also jumped 22 feet, reaching 22-1 ¾ on his 2nd jump.
Jones’ previous PR was a 22-3 from last year’s Central Jersey Group 3 meet at Jackson Liberty. Mitchell’s was 22-4 ¼ from an indoor meet in December at the Ott Center. Ceasar’s MileSplit profile only shows one previous high school track meet, and he jumped 21-10 ¾ at Bridgeton earlier this month so that’s apparently his previous PR.
Stewart’s previous PR was 21-4 ½ from the 2024 Salem County Championships at Salem, and Rothmiller-McIntosh’s PR is 22-4 ½ from last June at Greensboro Nationals.
An interesting note about Willingboro’s Johnson. His 23-3 ½ is 5th-best in Willingboro history and the best jump by a Chimera since All-America high jumper, long jumper and hurdler Mike Morrison soared 24-5 at a meet on his home track in 2003. Mitchell’s 23-2 is an Overbrook school record.
For this special occasion I put together a list of every South Jersey jumper that’s ever gone 23 feet. As always, errors and omissions, please let me know in the comment section.
