Delran’s Jamir Brown really came into his own at states as the top sophomore hurdler in the state.

Brown ran PRs of 14.66 and 54.90 in the state Group 2 meet at Franklin, placing 2nd in both races. He placed 2nd to BCSL rival and Willingboro senior Anaias Hughes in the 110 highs and 2nd to Roselle senior Daniel Jakubowski-Lewis in the 400 intermediates.

How far has Brown come in a short period of time?

According to his MileSplit profile, Brown didn’t even run track last year.

He didn’t break 15 seconds in the highs until sectionals, and he didn’t break 57 in the intermediates until divisionals.

But now he’s going into the Meet of Champions as the top sophomore in the high hurdles and the No. 2 soph in the intermediates.

Let’s take a look how he’s gotten there.

Brown’s big breakthrough in the highs came at Group 2 sectionals, where he PR’d at 14.94 in the trials and then ran 14.87 in the final, taking 2nd to Hughes. He ran another big PR of 14.67 in the trials at states before his 14.66 in the final.

In the intermediates, Brown ran a two-second PR of 55.60 at the BCSL meet. After placing 2nd at sectionals to Deptford junior Lathan Brown with a 55.60, he ran that 54.90 at states.

His 14.66 is fastest by a Delran hurdler since Harran Williams ran 14.27 at the 1999 state Group 2 meet, and his 54.90 is fastest by a Delran runner since Tim Dluik ran 54.53 at the 2006 state Group 2 meet at Egg Harbor Township. Williams set a Burlington County record of 52.62 that still stands at the 1999 state Group 2 meet.

Brown is the No. 8 seed at Saturday’s Meet of Champions in the high hurdles and No. 9 in the intermediates. He’s the only sophomore who’s a top-30 seed in the highs and one of only two top-20 seeds who’s a sophomore in the intermediates. Morristown’s Jason Meza ran 54.40 to win the state Group 4 race and is the No. 5 seed.

Brown is also entered in Franklin Field Nationals in both hurdles races in the Rising Stars division. The intermediates are Friday and the highs Saturday, so we’ll see where he winds up racing.

Either way, Brown has had a terrific sophomore season, and we didn’t even get into his long jumping.

Brown won the County Open at 22-0 ½ and even though he didn’t have his best day at states he did qualify for MoC and he is the No. 2 sophomore in New Jersey, behind Moorestown’s Rece Englehart.

It was a historic weekend for Burlington City junior Ny’era Hand Brooks.

Hand became the first girl from City to ever win an outdoor state title when she won the 100-meter hurdles at the Group 1 meet at Pennsauken.

Hand won by more than half a second over senior Kaelin Marshall of Haddon Township, who ran 15.61, and Woodbury junior Jordyn Miller-Knuckles was 3rd in 15.64, making it a 1-2-3 South Jersey sweep.

The best previous finish at states by a Blue Devil girl was 3rd place, and that’s happened three times.

In 2001, senior Kelly Dickerson placed 3rd in the Group 1 high jump with a 5-0 clearance, two years later senior Ashley Smitherman took 3rd in the hurdles at 15.12, and in 2009 senior Bessie Dean placed 3rd in the 2009 in 26.46. In 1982, Gina McMenamin placed 4th in the Group 2 3,200 in 11:17.5, and in 2008 Dean was 4th in the high jump at 5-0.

Hand-Brooks’ recent improvement has been impressive.

She didn’t break 16 seconds in the 100-meter highs until sectionals last weekend, when she ran 15.50 in the trials and then blew her PR out of the water with a 15.15 to win the Central Jersey Group 1 race.

Saturday at states, she matched her PR with a 15.15 in the trials and then lowered it again to 15.06 in the final. That makes her the No. 11 seed in the Meet of Champions and the No. 2 underclassman in South Jersey, behind only Eastern junior Johnay Stilley, who ran 14.76 at SJ-4 sectionals and was 4th at states with a 15.13.

Hand-Brooks also placed 3rd in the 200 with a 25.33, good enough for the No. 12 seed if she chooses to run it. That was also a PR, dropping her lifetime best from 25.44 at BCSL divisionals.

Haddonfield’s Seth Clevenger, Winslow’s Jaia James, Lumberton’s Greg Foster, Millville’s Leah Howard and Kingsway’s Kyle Rakitis and dozens more South Jersey athletes will be competing at New Balance Nationals this weekend at Franklin Field.

The meet is scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday, and with NJSIAA inexplicably refusing to change the date of the Meet of Champions to a weeknight there will be some obvious conflicts.

Athletes can participate in both meets if they race Thursday, Friday or Sunday, but the conflict of dates will definitely water down the Meet of Champions.

Clevenger is No. 4 in New Jersey at 9:03.65, James is No. 2 in New Jersey in the 100 at 11.90 Rakitis is No. 3 in the 1,600 at 4:09.12, Howard is No. 2 in New Jersey in the javelin and Foster was Ocean Breeze Nationals triple jump national champ indoors and is No. 4 in the long jump outdoors at 24-1.

Clewell placed 4th in the 800 in 1:54.27 and 6th in the 1,600 in 4:16.76 at the state Parochial A championships at Middletown North.

He goes into Saturday’s Meet of Champions at South Plainfield as the No. 6 seed in the 800 and No. 12 in the 1,600, although obviously not all the higher seeds will be competing in either race.

Clewell’s previous PRs were 1:54.88 last month at South Jersey Elite and 4:18.48 at the Camden County Championships.

The only other runners to go sub-1:55 and sub-4:17 this weekend at the six state meets were senior Myles Plummer of Union Catholic [1:51.03, 4:10.69] and junior Collin Boler of Delbarton [1:51.10, 4:09.60], who both also did it in those loaded Parochial A races.

The Rutgers-bound Clewell was part of a couple historic races this weekend – the fastest 1,600 ever run in New Jersey and one of the fastest 800s in state meet history.

Jaia James lost her first race this year. She hasn’t lost since.

James, a senior at Winslow, continued her fantastic season this weekend when she won her first two outdoor state titles.

James won the 100 in personal-best 11.94 and the 200 in 25.05 at the state Group 3 meet at Pennsauken.

On top of her win in the 55 at the Bubble in the indoor Group 3 meet, James is now a three-time state champ.

What about the start to the season?

In the South Jersey Elite at Delsea, Timber Creek sophomore Naylah Jones edged James in the 100. James hasn’t lost a 100 or 200 final since.

Jones has had a terrific season as well and placed 3rd in the 100 and 4th in the 200 at states. She’s ranked No. 2 among New Jersey sophomores in the 100 this year [12.08] and No. 5 in the 200 [25.46], and she won a state title as well this weekend when she teamed up with sophomore Chloe Jones and freshmen Ryan Jennings and Adiat Olaogun-Dickson on Timber Creek’s 1st-place 4-by-4 team, which ran 3:55.21. They’re No. 6 seed in the MoC.

As for James, she goes into the Meet of Champions as the No. 2 seed in the 100, behind only Christiana Nwachuku of Kent Place School in Summit. Nwachuku won the Parochial B race at states in 11.70, a big PR of her own.

James’ 11.94 is No. 20 in South Jersey history and No. 3 in Winslow’s incredible girls track history behind two legends – Shakira Dancy [11.71 in 2017] and Torie Robinson [11.73 in 2014]. It’s also No. 8 all-time in Camden County history.

Although James didn’t need to run super fast to win the 200, her 25.05 is still her 2nd-fastest time ever, behind a 24.79 to win sectionals. She’s the No. 7 seed in the MoC 200, but at least two of the girls ahead of her are planning to race at Franklin Field Nationals instead.

James Burrus didn’t break 11 seconds in the 100 until last month.

Now he’s one of the fastest sprinters in the state.

Burrus, a senior at Moorestown, won the 100-meter dash at the state Group 3 meet at Pennsauken this weekend in 10.58, which makes him the third South Jersey sprinter to run sub-10.60 fully automatic this year.

Before this year, only 11 had done it in South Jersey history.

Burrus first broke 11 seconds with a 10.87 in the prelims of the South Jersey Elite at Delsea on May 5. He lowered his PR to 10.83 in a fast race at the BCSL Liberty Division meet, where he took 3rd behind Northern Burlington Samuel Thomas [10.78] and Willingboro’s Malachi James [10.79].

He ran a wind-aided 10.79 and a legal 10.80 at sectionals last weekend, taking 2nd to Timber Creek junior Zyheem Coleman Frazier in the final, with both timed in 10.80.

He dropped his PR to 10.71 in the trials Friday and then blasted his 10.58 into a 2.5 wind in the final. That wind reading is surprising considering how fast the race was – the first five finishers all ran 10.76 or faster.

Burrus’ time was fastest at the state Group 3 meet in 11 years, since Damiere Byrd of Timber Creek – and currently with the Atlanta Falcons – ran 10.50 in 2011.

And he needed to fly considering North Hunterdon junior Kente Edwards ran 10.65 for 2nd place.

Burrus will be a part of the terrific Monmouth University program next year.

It appears the previous school record was 10.95 by Kamal Steward in the trials of the 2011 Burlington County Open at Maple Shade. Burrus is the first Moorestown sprinter ever to win a state title in the 100 or 200.

Corcoran has run 10.55 this year, James 10.56 and Burruss 10.58, and they’re ranked No. 3, 4 and 5 in the state and No. 10, 11 and 14 in South Jersey history.

Burrus is the No. 4 seed at Meet of Champs, James No. 5 and Corcoran No. 8, although Ledgister and Whittle have both said they’ll be running at New Balance Nationals at Franklin Field instead of the Meet of Champions, which should make for a wide-open Meet of Champions.

James and Burruss are now No. 2 and 3 in Burlington County history, behind only James Townsend, who ran that insane 10.45 to win the 2003 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield. Thomas is No. 10 on that all-time Burlco list.

It was quite a farewell to state competition for Clayton’s Sharpe triplets, who combined for 60 points in their individual events and led the Clippers to a second straight state Group 1 championship.

Clayton scored the 2nd-most points in state Group 1 history at Pennsauken, outscoring 2nd-place Hasbrouck Heights 101 ½-60. The Sharpes also led Paulsboro to the 2019 state Group 1 title and helped Clayton win its first state championship last year.

Clayton’s 101 ½ points are the most in Group 1 since Penns Grove scored 108 to win the 2003 meet. The only other school that’s been over 100 since the state meet changed from 6-4-3-2-1 scoring to 10-8-6-4-2-1 is Metuchen, which scored 100 ½ points when it won the 1996 meet.

Arianna Sharpe won the 100, 200 and 400 in 11.99, 24.55 and 54.30. The 11.99 is a PR and No. in Gloucester County history, and the 54.30 broke the meet record of 54.75 set in 2014 by Penns Grove’s Faleesha Dowe.

Amirah Sharpe won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:02.29 and placed 2nd in the 200 in 24.70. And Ariel Sharpe ran 1:05.83 for 2nd in the intermediates and 58.18 for 4th in the 400.

The three Sharpes also teamed up with freshman Leila Ortiz to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3:50.41. They broke the meet record of 3:52.87 set in 2013 by Penns Grove’s Kianje Pollard, Jaye Pollard, Courtney Smith and Dowe.

Sophomore Alanna Woolfolk PR’d in the high jump at 5-7 after winning the event when she cleared 5-4. That’s No. 5 in Gloucester County and No. 3 in the state this year. Woolfolk won the state Group 2 title last year as a freshman at Delsea. She was state Group 1 and Meet of Champions winner this past indoor season for Clayton.

Clayton sophomore Maylisa Bluford also had a big day, taking 2nd in the discus with a big PR of 113-1. Her previous best was 103-6 at sectionals and until the Gloucester County meet four weeks ago she hadn’t broken 93 feet. Amazing progress and a huge eight points. Bluford finished second to another Gloucester County thrower, Pitman senior Catriona Galvin, who won with a 126-3.

Clayton also picked up four points in the 400-meter relay, where junior Kelsey Thomas, freshman Miyanna Johnson, junior Erica Thomas and Ortiz ran 51.46.
