At the 2019 Central jersey Group 1 sectionals, Willingboro’s Balkis Iyiola won the 100 and placed second in the 200.
She just missed becoming a double winner and thanks to the pandemic had to wait two years to get another shot.
This past weekend, the Willingboro senior made the most of the opportunity, becoming the first Willingboro girl to win two individual events at a sectional meet in 11 years.
Iyiola won the 100 in 12.75 and the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.74 at the Central Jersey Group 1 meet at Long Branch.
She became Willingboro’s first double individual winner at sectionals since 2010, when Vanessa Arientyl tripled, winning the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.95, the 400-meter intermediates in 1:02.24 and the long jump at 16-10 1/4 in South Jersey Group 2 at Buena.
Iyiola goes into Group 1 states this weekend at Pennsauken as the No. 2 seed in the high hurdles, No. 5 seed in the 100 and No.15 in the 200.
Iyiola also won the 55-meter dash at the 2020 indoor Group 1 sectionals at the Bubble and ran legs on Willingboro’s winning 400-meter relay team at 2019 outdoor sectionals at Howell and 4-by-400 indoors at 2019 and 2020 sectionals at the Bubble, so she’s now got eight lifetime sectional championships.
