Kingsway junior Kyle Rakitis was the overall winner, and Ocean City placed three in the top 7 to win the team title Saturday in the p.m. pod race at the South Jersey Open.
Rakitis covered the DREAM Park 5K course in Logan Township in 16:33, finishing 45 meters ahead of Timber Creek Michael Henry, who ran 16:42.
Rakitis’s time is fastest by a Kingsway runner at DREAM Park, 15 seconds faster than Stephen Wilkins ran at the 2018 South Jersey Shootout.
Ocean City was led by junior Owen Ritti in 3rd [16:57], senior Tyler Greene in 5th [17:13] and senior Brendan Schlatter in 7th [17:24].
The Red Raiders edged second-place Kingsway 41-46, with Timber Creek third at 68. Ocean City went 3-5-7-12-14 and Kingsway was 1-6-8-11-20 (21st including non-scoring runner).
The team title is Ocean City’s first at the South Jersey Open since 2005, when they outscored Triton 64-67 win Division 3 at Delsea. Ocean City hasn’t raced at the South Jersey Open in most recent years.
Also scoring for Ocean City were sophomores Chris Sardy [12th in 18:11] and Nick Scarangelli [14th in 18:21], with freshman 6th man Matt Hoffman five seconds back in 15th.
Other South Jersey runners in the top 10 were Williamstown senior Josh Jackson [4th in 17:04], Kingsway senior Ethan Gray [6th in 17:21], Kingsway senior Aidan Smith [8th in 17:26] and Timber Creek junior Cole Mylan [9th in 17:32].
