A pair of Olympians leads off the South Jersey 400-meter dash all-time top-50 performance list!!!

A couple Olympic gold medalists lead off the all-time South Jersey 400-meter dash list.

Edgewood’s Dennis Mitchell, who won a gold medal on the U.S. 400-meter relay team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, is the South Jersey record holder with his 46.02 at the 1984 Keebler Championships in Oak Grove, Ill., and Willingboro’s Lamont Smith, who won a gold medal as part of the U.S. 1,600-meter relay team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, is No. 2 with his 46.62 at the 1991 Meet of Champions in South Plainfield.

It takes a 48.26 to make it onto the all-time South Jersey top-50 in the 400-meter dash. Although this list is complete up through about 48 flat, it’s possible a few times from the 1980s in the 48.0 to 48.2 range could be missing.

Here’s the top 50. As always, if you see anyone missing, don’t post it on Twitter because I won’t see it. Send me a message in the comment section and include all the information you know – the time, the meet, the year.

Hey Ruck! It’s helping keep me busy. When it’s all done we’ll have a complete South Jersey all-time list! A lot of Willingboro and Lenape names I keep seeing!

Reuben, I know several Coaches that Love and Respect your work. One day, maybe we can get together.

Lamont ran 21.40 at the Keepler Meet (IPI) in June 1991. He placed 6th out of 8.

Ruck I think Keebler was hand-timed that year because all I can find is Lamont running 21.4 hand-timed. I’ll keep looking though!

Handy is on the list with a 47.3 hand-time converted to 47.44.

Dennis Mitchell ran 46.02. Handy is #14 on the 400 list.

      Hey Martin!

When you guys ran 3:22.85 sprint medley at nationals in 2001, was it Jade Smith on the 400, Dwight Ruff and Jamar Ervin on the 200s and John Morris on the 800?

      Thanks, Roob

Hey Ernest, thanks for the note.

Tim ran a hand-timed 47.8 on June 5, 1984, at the Delaware Valley Meet of Champions at Franklin Field. That converts to 47.94 for fat for list purposes.

Russell: I just checked a number of these and they’re already listed. We only list the best performance per athlete or team and for relays the best performance from that year.

      Thanks, Roob
