In his first collegiate race, Rider freshman and Palmyra graduate Sam Aviles broke into the all-time Rider top-10 in the high hurdles Friday, winning the 60-meter highs at the Fastrack Invitational at Ocean Breeze in 8.11.
Aviles led all qualifiers with an 8.30 in the second of four prelims. He lowered that to 8.11 in the final, where he edged Jeremiah Richards of Rutgers-Newark by 7-100ths of a second.
Another freshman making his college debut, Kevin King of Rowan via Ocean City High, placed fourth in 8.51.
Aviles was the state Group 1 champ at 110 meters over the high school 39-inch hurdles last spring and was 4th in the Meet of Champions. College hurdles are set at 42 inches.
Here’s the all-time Rider top-10. Note that three of the top 10 are from South Jersey, Robinson from Moorestown, Hicks from Maple Shade and Aviles from Palmyra.
