Holy Spirit graduate Cade Antonucci, an Auburn sophomore, popped another javelin PR with a 233-9 at the Tennessee Relays. He actually threw two PRs.

Coming into the meet, Antonucci’s career-best throw was a 231-5, which he hit last year at a meet in Tucson, Ariz.

Antonucci placed fourth at the meet in Knoxville but second among collegians, behind Marc Minichello of Penn, who threw a PR of 237-8. Minichello, only a 204-foot thrower in high school, is a freshman out of Wyoming Area High School in Exeter, Pa., Luzerne County, near Wilkes-Barre.

Antonucci improved on every throw, opening with a 207-3, then improving to 222-6 and 232-2 before finishing with the 233-9 and a foul.

His throw is No. 2 in Auburn history. The school record is 239-7 set in 2014 by Justin Carter as a freshman at the SEC Championships.

At Holy Spirit, Antonucci had a PR of 220-11, won the 2016 and 2017 Meet of Champions titles and was second at New Balance Nationals. He also threw the discus 169-1 and the shot 59-5 1/4 and was a multiple state medalist in both, but so far he’s only thrown the javelin at Auburn.

According to the latest NCAA Division 1 rankings, four South Jersey alums — all from different high schools — are in the top 12 in the javelin: Curtis Thompson of Florence and Mississippi State, the 2018 U.S. champion, is No. 2 (254-5), Chris Mirabelli of Rutgers and Holy Cross is seventh at 237-2, Nick Mirabelli of Texas A&M is No. 8 at 236-6 and Antonucci is No. 12. Nick Mirabelli is the No. 3 freshman, just behind Minichello.

Those four are ranked No. 27, 93, 100 and 116 in the world, according to the IAAF rankings. And they’re ranked No. 2, 10, 11 and 15 among U.S. men.

Rowan senior Chris Mesiano, a Schalick graduate, moved into the No. 3 spot on the NCAA Division 3 intermediate hurdles list Saturday with a 52.96 win at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa.

Mesiano led four Rowan hurdlers under 55.3 seconds, with Kervens Mezilus of Cherry Hill East third in 54.75, Ty Garland of Deptford fourth in 54.81 and John Owens of West Windsor-Plainsboro North fifth in 55.29.

Mesiano’s time trails only two Ohio runners – Otterbein junior Cwinn Febus, who ran 52.61 at the all-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan’s Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio (my alma mater!), and Kenny Beucler of Heidelberg, who ran 52.90 in a meet at Tiffin earlier this month.

Mesiano, a two-time NCAA All-America running on Rowan 1,600-meter relay teams, just missed his PR of 52.89, which he ran last May at Swarthmore.

Garland has run 54.09 this spring, but the 54.75 is a PR for Mezilus, and the 55.29 is a PR for Owens, who has also long jumped 22-11 3/4 this spring.

Deptford and Paul VI hooked up in a titanic 800-meter relay showdown at Woodbury Saturday, with both running sub-1:30 and posting the top-two times by South Jersey teams so far this year.

Deptford ran 1:29.42 with the team of seniors Khion Smith, Tyrece Brown and Javon Sanders and junior Donovan Clement. PVI ran 1:29.92 with freshmen Matthew and Michael Mazero, senior Brian Brown and junior Matt Martino.

Pennsauken made it three schools under 1:32 with a 1:31.72 for third place.

Deptford’s previous fastest time this spring was a 1:31.22 at the Rebel Relays two weeks ago. Paul VI had a 1:30.76 in a meet in Delaware last weekend.

The only faster school in the state this year is Nottingham of Hamilton Township, which ran 1:29.12 at the Moorestown Invitational last weekend.

This is the fifth straight year Deptford has run sub-1:30. The Spartans set the school record of 1:28.57 on the fast track at Woodbury in 2017. They also ran 1:28.96 in 2015 at Woodbury, 1:29.57 in 2016 at the Willingboro Relays and 1:29.84 at Woodbury last year.

Paul VI has been under 1:30 three of the last four years, including a 1:27.38 in 2016. PVI also ran 1:28.38 last year and 1:29.90 in 2015.

Brielle Smith destroyed her the New Jersey state javelin record Saturday with a 168-6 at the Woodbury Relays.

Smith, a senior at Oakcrest, broke her own Atlantic County, South Jersey and state mark of 163-8, which she threw last year at the Meet of Champions.

Her mark is No. 1 in the nation this year according to the MileSplit database and it appears to be No. 12 all-time, although it’s difficult to tell for sure because of incorrect marks in the database.

Smith now has a nearly eight-foot lead over any other thrower in New Jersey history with the new javelin implement (since 2002). Maria Jimenez of Vineland threw 160-8 at the 2012 Cape-Atlantic Championships.

Jimenez also held the previous meet record of 153-6, also set in 2012.

According to the IAAF tables, Smith’s mark makes her the No. 4 18-and-under athlete in the world this year and the No. 1 U.S. junior and No. 15 U.S. woman.

Martin Riddell and Ethan Wechsler ran the two-fastest 3,200’s by New Jersey runners this year Thursday night at Cherokee’s initial Night of 3200s in Marlton.

Riddell, a Haddonfield junior, ran 9:12.43, and Wechsler finished just behind in 9:16.66.

Riddell’s previous PR was a 9:18.81 for fifth at the indoor Meet of Champions this past February. His outdoor PR was a 9:33.38 from last year’s Camden County Championships.

Wechsler’s previous PR was a 9:21.02, also from the indoor Meet of Champions this past winter. His outdoor PR was a 9:31.06 from the Holmdel Night of 3200s last May.

In all, 10 runners broke 9:40 and 30 broke 10 minutes. The race produced the 18-fastest times by South Jersey two-milers so far this spring and 18 of the top 23 state-wide.

—> Haddonfield senior Greg Eisenhower placed fourth in 9:27.29, breaking his PR of 9:30.88.

—> Cherry Hill East junior Oliver Adler was fifth in 9:29.62, lowering his PR from 9:34.97

—> Haddonfield senior Griffin Weiner took sixth in 9:32.16, a huge drop from his PR of 9:52.89.

—> Haddonfield senior Derek Gess moved up from the 800 and 1,600 to run 9:34.85, lowering his PR from 9:44.39

—> Haddonfield junior Stephen Kasko took ninth in 9:37.97, dropping nearly 16 seconds from his PR of 9:53.73

—> Cherokee junior Chase Miller ran 10th in 9:39.42, just off his PR of 9:31.31 from the Holmdel Night of 3200s last May.

—> Aidan Eyre, a Cherry Hill East sophomore, ran 9:41.41 for 12th, a massive breakthrough from his previous personal-best of 10:13.36 from a Bennett Center developmental meet back in January.

—> Andrew Gostovich, a junior at Haddonfield, ran 9:42.73 for 13th. He doesn’t run many 3200s but his previous PR was a 10:38.69 at this meet last April.

—> Junior Tyler Jackson was Cherokee’s third runner, taking 14th in 9:43.51. That’s a PR and the first big-meet 3,200 Jackson has ever run on the track.

—> Senior Ethan Spellmeyer gave Haddonfield seven at 9:45 or faster with a 9:45.43 for 15th place. His previous PR was a 9:54.00 at this meet a year ago.

Woodrow Wilson senior Dennisha Page put together an incredible sprint triple this weekend, winning the 100, 200 and 400 in a meet in Delaware with two N.J. No. 1 times along with a N.J. No. 2 time.

Page won the 100 in 12.02, the 200 in 24.17 and the 400 in 57.53 at the Caravel Academy Invitational in Glasgow, Del.

What a triple!!!!!

All three times are fastest this year by a South Jersey girl. The 100 and 200 are state-bests and the 400 is second-fastest, behind only indoor Meet of Champions winner Kaira Brown of Kent Place in Summit, who ran 55.38 in a meet in Potomac, Md., this past weekend.

Page has run slightly faster in the 100 and 200 but never this early in a season. Her short sprint PRs are 11.90 and 23.99, both from last year’s Meet of Champions.

The 57.53 is a big PR, breaking her previous personal-best of 59.46, which she ran indoors at the Bennett Center winning the Group 2 sectionals this past February. Her previous outdoor 400 PR was a 1:00.46 from another meet in Delaware, the DuPont High Invite last March in Greenville, Del.

Maybe her most impressive race was the 200. Just to put a 24.17 in perspective, only nine girls in South Jersey history have ever run faster (including herself). Page is one of only six who have run sub-24.

Big breakthrough race Saturday for Rutgers freshman Iyanla Kollock, who dipped under 12 seconds for the first time in the 100-meter dash.

Kollock, the former Our Lady of Mercy Academy sprinter, ran 11.93 for second at the Metropolitan Championships in Piscataway, finishing behind only Fairliegh Dickinson junior Kylia Smith, who ran 11.83. That was also a PR for Smith, a transfer from Butler Community College near Pittsburgh.

Kollock had a high school PR of 12.10, which she ran two years ago as a OLMA junior at the Rowan Invitational, where she placed second to Jewel Ash of Eastern. Kollock was a six-time state champ in high school.

But she PR’d twice Saturday, first with a 12.03 in the trials before her 11.93 in the final. Kollock also ran 25.35 for eighth in the 200, just off her PR of 25.32, which she ran at the 2016 Meet of Champions.

What a race by Robert Dessoye!

The Egg Harbor graduate, now a Bucknell sophomore, smashed his 800 PR by more than two seconds Sunday, running 1:51.82 at the Bison Invitational on his home track in Lewisburg, Pa.

It’s the second PR in a week for Dessoye, who went out in 54.71 and came back in 57.11 and placed fifth in a loaded field. Leon Atkins of Buffalo won in 1:49.97, leading an incredible 28 runners under the IC4A qualifying standard of 1:54.00.

Dessoye ran 1:54.00 indoors at IC4A but came into this spring with an outdoor PR of 1:54.74 from a home meet last spring. Dessoye ran 1:55.28 at EHT, PR’ing at Group 4 states as a senior.

Dessoye’s time is No. 4 in the Patriot League so far this spring.

Dessoye’s 1:51.82 is No. 10 in Bucknell history, and that’s a program that has been producing tremendous middle-distance runners for decades.

Delsea’s Bill Goldsborough continues to excel as a freshman at Georgian Court in Lakewood, and on Saturday he placed second in the discus at the Rider Invitational with a near-PR 158-0 for second place.

Goldsborough also threw 47-6 1/2 for fifth in the shot and 138-10 for seventh in the hammer throw, which he just took up this spring.

Goldsborough is versatile, but his best event so far has been the shot put, and he’s got a 54-10 to his credit this spring with the 16-pound ball, a mark he threw in a meet at Stockton University in Galloway last month. That broke the school record of 53-4 1/2, set in 2017 by Joseph Kaas at the 2016 CACC Championships in Lakewood.

That makes him No. 33 overall in NCAA Division 2 and the No. 3 freshman. It’s an NCAA Division 2 championships provisional qualifier and the No. 2 throw in the entire NCAA Division 2 East Region, behind only a 57-11 3/4 by Rickssen Opont of St. Thomas Aquinas University in Sparkhill, N.Y.

Goldsborough is No. 1 in the discus in the East Region with a 161-6 from a meet at Monmouth Regional in West Long Branch late last month, and he’s the No. 3 freshman nationally but not far off the top two — Nathan Swadley of Missouri S&T [164-4] of Rolla, Mo., and Konner Swenson of Pittsburg (Kan.) State [163-11].

Goldsborough is only half a foot off the school discus record of 162-0 1/2, set in 2017 by Kaas at a meet at Stockton.

At Delsea, threw 58-0 1/2 and 168-1 with the high school implements. He was a multiple state medalist and Meet of Champions runner-up last winter in the shot behind Christopher Licata of Gill St. Bernard’s.
