Kingsway overcame a 1-2 Cherokee finish to roll to a 43-73 win in the South Jersey Group 4 championships Saturday morning, the Dragons’ second straight team title.
Kingsway packed its five scorers in the top 14, with just 26 seconds separating one through five on the flat 5,000-meter Delsea Regional course in Franklinville.
Senior Daniel Reynolds (5th in 16:10), senior Kieran Burns (6th in 16:11), senior Gavin Wagner (8th in 16:19), junior Stone Caraccio (10th in 16:29) and senior Stephen Wilkins III (14th in 16:36) were backed up by junior Ayden Magee in 15th (16:38), with freshman Kyle Rakitis not far back (23rd in 16:45).
The title was Kingsway’s fifth overall, following Group 3 wins in 2006, 2001 and 2012 and Group 4 last year.
Juniors Ethan Wechsler and Chase Miller went 1-2 for Cherokee, but the Chiefs didn’t have anybody else in the top 20, although they had four between 21 and 26.
Kingsway finished with a 43-73 margin of victory, followed by Cherry Hill East (103), Lenape (149) and Toms River North fifth (152).
Wechsler and Miller became the first teammates to go 1-2 in the South Jersey Group 4 boys race since 2007, when Cherokee seniors Alex Yersak and Kevin Schickling ran 16:01 and 16:08 to go 1-2 on the same course.
The last time two underclassmen from the same team went 1-2 in the S.J.-4 race was 1994, when Jay Wassell and Nick Noguer of Highland did it racing at Kingsway.
Junior Oliver Adler of Cherry Hill East placed third in 16:09. Also in the top 10 were Toms River North senior Javid Ridgeway (16:09), Clearview soph Anas Bensaoud (16:14) and Egg Harbor senior Gobi Thurairajah (16:25).
