Senior Zyra Thomas and the 3,200-meter relay team accounted for more than half of Schalick’s points in a historic weekend for the Schalick girls program at the state group 1 meet at Franklin Township.
Schalick outscored second-place Highland Park 52-49 to win the first state championship in program history,
Thomas on Friday won the shot put with a 42-3 3/4 throw, and junior teammate Ralazha Bell added a point with a 36-7 for sixth. Thomas came back Saturday and threw 124-2 for second place in the discus.
Schalick got 10 huge points Friday, when senior Amanda Chomo, sophomore Marleigh Puglia and freshmen Chloe Gerstenbacher and Julia Smith won the 3,200-meter relay with a school-record 9:48.96.
Versatile senior Camryn Castellini scored in two events, taking second in the high jump with a 5-0 clearance and fifth in the pole vault at 9-6.
Chomo also placed fourth in the 800 in 2:20.74, senior Rayannia Robinson took second in the triple jump at 35-10 and freshman Tia Furbush was fifth in the triple jump at 34-4
Schalick joins Woodbury, Kingsway, Haddon Heights, Haddonfield, Paulsboro, Woodbury, Pitman and Penns Grove as only the ninth South Jersey school to win the state Group 1 girls title since it began in 1973.
Penns Grove, which won Group won in 2013 and 2014, is the only other Salem County school to win a state title in girls track.
