South Jersey trio runs hot in Meet of Champions 3,200-meter run!!!!!

It was a fast race up front and it was a pretty darn fast race back in the pack as well.

Mainland Regional’s Kevin Antczak led three South Jersey juniors to huge performances Saturday at the 51st annual Meet of Champions at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

Antczak, Haddonfield’s Martin Riddell and Cherokee’s Ethan Wechsler placed fourth, fifth and sixth, Antczk in 9:18.59, Riddell in 9:18.81 and Wechsler in 9:21.02.

All three times are among the 15-fastest ever run at the Meet of Champions by South Jersey two-milers.

Antczak ran a two-mile that converts to 9:16.69 earlier this year, but the times are big PRs for Riddell and Wechsler.

Riddell’s previous indoor PR was 9:35.49 and Wechsler’s 9:28.00. None of the three has broken 9:30 outdoors.

They’re the three-fastest juniors in South Jersey in six years, since Hammonton’s Lou Corgliano ran 9:17.52 as a junior in 2013.

Liam Murphy of Allentown and Devin Hart of Point Pleasant ran 8:54.22 and 8:54.45, the two-fastest times in meet history and No. 2 and 3 in state history, with Jack Jennings of Mendham third in 9:18.11.

Sebastien Reed of Pitman, another junior, was also under 9:30 at 9:28.59 for 11th, and Greg Eisenhower of Haddonfield was 12th in 9:30.88, an eight-second indoor PR (and four-second overall PR).

For many years, the Meet of Champions was a slow race. During the 18-year span from 1983 through 2000, nobody broke 9:15 at the M-of-C and the winning time was 9:21 or slower all but twice from 1987 through 2000.

Highland’s Kevin Pumphrey ran 9:15.76 to win the 1986 race and no South Jersey two-miler broke 9:17 again until Mike Rankin of Paul VI ran 9:13.33 for seventh in 2010 — 24 years later.

On the all-time South Jersey Meet of Champions performance list, four of the top seven times are from the 1970s and 11 of the top 17 times come from the 2010’s.

SINCERE RHEA JUST MISSES MEET RECORD, WINS 2ND STRAIGHT MEET OF CHAMPIONS HURDLES TITLE!!!!!

St. Augustine’s Sincere Rhea continued his brilliant senior year Saturday, easily winning his second straight Meet of Champions title in the 55-meter hurdles.

Rhea is the first repeat winner since Sultan Tucker of Delsea in 1996 and 1997. The only other repeaters in the meet’s 51-year history are Reggie Blackshear of Metuchen in 1972 and 1973, Randy Johnson of Morristown in 1974 and 1975 and Stephan Fletcher of Princeton in 1982 and 1983.

Rhea ran 7.22, missing the meet record of 7.19 set in Trenton’s Jermaine Collier in 2012 by 3-100ths of a second and just 2-100ths of a second off his PR of 7.20 from Easterns earlier this week in New York. His time is tied for third-fastest in meet history.

Rhea is only the second boy or girl from an Atlantic County high school to win consecutive Meet of Champions titles. Nijgia Snapp of Oakcrest won the 400 in 2008 and 2009.

Here’s a list of all the South Jersey 55-meter hurdles winners in Meet of Champions history:

Pleasantville’s Gabriel Moronta turns in another MASSIVE PR, takes 3rd in Meet of Champs 800, jumps to #6 in S.J. history!!!!!!

A week ago, Gabriel Moronta’s 800 PR was 1:59.48. Now he’s one of the fastest half-milers in South Jersey history!

The Pleasantville junior ran his second-straight massive 800 PR Saturday. Moronto, who didn’t break 2:02 before this indoor season, had a PR of 1:59.48 from a meet in January going into states, where he won Group 2 in 1:56.71.

On Saturday, he ran 1:54.41 to place third in the 51st annual Meet of Champions at the Bennett Center.

Moronta’s finished behind only Union Catholic junior Elijah Brown , who ran 1:53.98, and South Brunswick’s Miles Liggins, who ran 1:54.10.

Pleasantville is an 800 MACHINE. Four of the six-fastest times in South Jersey history now come from Pleasantville runners. Pleasantville has four half-milers under 1:54.5 and the rest of South Jersey IN HISTORY has TWO!!!!!

And just like that, a guy who had a PR of 2:02 six weeks ago is No. 6 in South Jersey history indoors. Here’s the sub-1:56 club:

Another South Jersey half-miler, Highland’s Jarayah Hawkins, PR’d at 1:57.50 for seventh in the same race.

Three South Jersey hurdlers lead the field through the trials at the boys Meet of Champions!!!!!

South Jersey boys have the three-fastest qualifying times for the hurdles final at today’s Meet of Champions,.

Sincere Rhea of St. Augustine, coming off his Easterns title, ran within 5-100ths of his PR in the trials, leading all qualifiers at 7.25. Sam Aviles, racing in the same heat, ran 7.53, not far off his PR of 7.49. And Deptford’s Naseem Smith won the fourth heat in 7.55, also very close to his PR of 7.49.

Those three will line up in the middle of the track in the 55-meter hurdles final later on Saturday at the Bennett Center.

Rhea won last year in 7.35 and is attempting to become the first repeat winner in the 55-meter highs at the Meet of Champs since Sultan Tucker of Delsea in 1996 and 1997.

Keep an eye on the FAT meet record of 7.19 set by Jermaine Collier of Trenton in 2012 because Rhea is getting very close.

Incredibly, Rhea was also the fastest South Jersey boy in the 55-meter dash trials with a personal-best 6.52. His previous PR was a 6.57. Rhea’s 6.52 is fourth-fastest going into the finals. He’s the only South Jersey sprinter who qualified for the final.

Sterling senior Alijah Caul’s remarkable shot put improvement on full display at Easterns!!!!

Sterling senior Alijah Caul continued her outstanding indoor season with a third-place finish in the shot put at Easterns Tuesday night.

Caul had throws of 40-6 1/4 and 40-9 1/2 on her second and third attempt in the trials and was the only competitor with more than one 40-foot throw in the competition. She wound up finishing about a foot behind winner Denae Hill of West Orange, who had a 41-10 1/2 winner.

Considering that Caul placed 27th at Easterns last year with a 33-5 1/2 best throw, you can see how far she’s come.

Her PR last winter was 36-0 and she improved to 38-6 last spring, which was good enough to win South Jersey Group 2 sectionals.

But her real breakthrough has came this winter, with four meets over 40 feet and five others over 39 feet. In fact her worst mark was a 39-2 1/2 at a SJTCA meet last month at the Bennett Center. That’s remarkable consistency. In fact, Caul has averaged a best throw of 39-8 1/2 in the nine meets she’s entered.

Caul’s PR is a school-record 41-8 to win Group 2 states last weekend, and she goes into Sunday’s Meet of Champions as the No. 2 seed behind another Colonial Conference thrower, Haddon Heights’ Cydney Thomas, who won Group 1 with a 44-3 and is ranked No. 6 nationally according to MileSplit USA at 46-1 from sectionals . Thomas didn’t compete at Easterns.

Caul’s 40-9 1/2 is the best throw by a South Jersey girl at Easterns since 2012, when Lola Agabalogun of Egg Harbor threw 42-0 1/4 for fourth and Tara Daniels of Kingsway threw 40-11 for sixth.

The only South Jersey girls to win the Easterns shot put title are Camden’s Dana White in 2000 [41-6 1/2] and Atlantic City’s Mercedes Hicks in 2006 [43-10 1/4].

Rancocas Valley’s Bethany Biggi topples national champ in thrilling Easterns high jump competition!!!!!

Rancocas Valley’s Bethany Biggi not only became the first South Jersey girl in 32 years to win the Easterns high jump, she not only set a lifetime PR of 5-6, she beat a national champion along the way.

Biggi, a Rancocas Valley senior, recorded the first major invitational win of her track career Tuesday night, clearing 5-6 for the first time indoors or out to win the Easterns high jump at the Armory.

Biggi had only cleared 5-4 twice before her huge breakthrough in New York.

She cleared opening height of 5-0 and also 5-2 on her first attempt, 5-4 on her second and 5-6 on her second before missing three attempts at 5-8.

Amy Arirguzoh of the Lawrenceville School and Abrianna Barrett of Montgomery High also cleared 5-6 but both did it on their third attempt, so Biggi got the win based on clearing the winning height on fewer attempts. Arirguzoh made 5-4 on her first attempt, so she was in the lead when the bar went up to 5-6.

Biggi is the first South Jersey girl to win at Easterns since Erin Halpin of Cherry Hill West cleared 5-6 in 1987.

Biggi’s clearance is the best by an R.V. girl indoors since Tonya Lee cleared 5-7 1/4 in 1988. Lee went on reach the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials final in the 400-meter hurdles. Lee cleared 5-8 outdoors in 1987.

As for the national champion, that was Rutherford junior Jenna Rogers, who cleared 6-0 3/4 in June to win the New Balance National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Rogers had never lost an indoor high jump competition to a New Jersey girl before Tuesday. She finished fourth at Easterns at 5-4.

Biggi is the third R.V. girl to win an Easterns title. Lee won the long jump at 18-4 3/4 in 1987 and Aliyah Taylor ran 55.21 to win the 400 in 2017. The boys won the 800-meter relay in 2017 in 1:29.29.

Dave Bannar came close in 1976, when he ran 7.2 hand-timed in the high hurdles, finishing 1-10th of a second behind Paul Snipes of Essex Catholic.

Daniel Fenton, Isaiah Whaley run 1-2 in 400 meters for first-ever Cape-Atlantic sweep at Easterns!!!!!

Millville’s Daniel Fenton and Atlantic City’s Isaiah Whaley gave the Cape-Atlantic League a 1-2 finish in the 400-meter dash at Easterns Tuesday night, Fenton winning in an indoor PR 49.63 and Whaley second with an indoor PR of his own at 49.70.

These long-time rivals were the only runners under 50 seconds. It was the first 1-2 Cape-Atlantic finish in Easterns history (Yes, I looked it up. And yes it took a long time).

Fenton lowered his PR from 50.17 from states over the weekend. He’s dropped his indoor 400 PR from 51.35 coming into the season to 50.57 at a meet in December to 50.36 at sectionals to 50.17 at states to 49.63 at Easterns. His outdoor PR is 49.18 from sectionals last spring.

Whaley had an indoor PR of 51.52 coming into the winter and dropped it to 51.02 in January, 50.55 at sectionals and 49.70 at Easterns. He’s got a 49.10 to his credit from the same sectional race that Fenton ran 49.18.

Fenton is only the second South Jersey runner ever to win the 400 at Easterns. Lenape’s Mohamad Kanu ran 48.36 to win in 2000.

It’s incredible how many 1-2 S.J. finish there’ve been at Easterns over the years. Here’s a look at that list!

Sebastien Reed’s 4:24 anchor leads Pitman to one of the fastest Group 1 DMRs ever at Easterns!!!!!

A 10:36 distance medley is something any school can be proud of. For a Group 1 school, it’s even more impressive.

And that’s what Pitman accomplished Tuesday night at Easterns.

Led by Sebastien Reed’s 4:24 anchor, Pitman ran 10:36.32 to place sixth among some much-larger schools at the 85th annual Easterns States Championships at the Armory in New York.

Anthony Razze led off for Pitman with a 3:15.2 split for 1,200 meters and after Justin Bender’s 400 leg, Cole Sharpnack turned in a 2:00.3 split for 800 meters to set up Reed, whose anchor leg was officially 4:24.27.

That’s the third-fastest DMR ever by a South Jersey Group 1 school at Easterns and the fastest distance medley this year by a New Jersey Group 1 school.

The two faster Group 1 DMRs at Easterns: In 2002, Haddonfield won the Easterns DMR as a Group 1 school in 10:16.84 on a 3:05 leadoff by Skip Stiles and Chris Platt’s 4:18 anchor; and in 2015, Haddon Township, led by Luke Petela’s 4:15.39 anchor, ran 10:24.23 for fourth place.

Pitman’s time is also fastest by any Gloucester County school in five years, since Kingsway ran 10:31.88 at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic at the Armory in 2014. It’s fastest by a Gloucester County school at Easterns since Washington Township ran 10:35.65 in 2011.

It’s been quite a year for Pitman, which earlier this month won the first sectional championship in school history and this past weekend tied for third in the state Group 1 meet.

On Saturday, three of the four Pitman DMR legs will compete in the Meet of Champions. Razze will run the 1,600, Sharpnack the 800 and Reed the 3,200.

Wilson’s Dennisha Page runs all-time S.J. #5 200-meter dash to highlight big night at Easterns!!!!!

Wilson’s Dennisha Page had a big meet Tuesday night at Easterns, placing second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 55-meter dash, matching her 55 PR and moving up to No. 5 in South Jersey history in the 200.

Page ran 7.12 in the 55 trials, matching her PR from last week when she won states, then 7.18 in the semis and 7.17 in the final, good for third behind Paul Robeson’s Toshel Goffe and Eastern sophomore Jailya Ash, who ran 7.13. Page’s 55 PR was 7.23 going into Easterns, so that’s coming down significantly.

In the 200, Page opened with a 24.57 in the trials, which is No. 1 in South Jersey this year and No. 2 in the state behind multiple state record holder Athing Mu, who attends Trenton High School but competes independently and has a 24.11 to her credit (as well as a 52.55 and 2:03.98). It also places her No. 17 in state history indoors.

Page demolished her indoor 200 PR, which stood at 25.42 coming into Easterns from a meet at Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, Pa., last month. Page does have a 23.99 outdoors from last year’s Meet of Champions.

Page, who will attend Syracuse, moved into the all-time Easterns top-20, and her time is actually eighth-fastest ever by a New Jersey girl at Easterns and second-fastest by a South Jersey girl, behind only Winslow’s Krystal Cantey, who ran 24.38 in the semis at the 2006 meet.

Here’s a look at the fastest New Jersey girls in the 200 at Easterns:

24.00 … Sydney McLaughlin (Union Catholic), 2016
24.21 … Dominique Booker (Immaculate Conception), 2008
24.34 … Toneisha Friday (Franklin Twp.), 2005
24.38 … Krystal Cantey (Winslow), 2006
24.38 … Raquel Vassell (East Orange), 2006
24.53 … Olivia Baker (Columbia), 2014
24.56 … Haisha Bisiolu (Union), 2015
24.57 … Dennisha Page (Woodrow Wilson), 2019

Kingsway’s Orion Joyner PR’s at Easterns, continues his climb up the all-time S.J. triple jump list!!!!

Kingsway senior Orion Joyner uncorked another big triple jump at Easterns Tuesday night, placing second with a personal-best 46-5 at the Armory.

Joyner hit the 46-5 on his first attempt of the trials and led until the second-to-last jump of the competition, when Meldon Grant of Manhasset High in New York jumped 47-1.

Joyner’s previous indoor PR was a 45-10 3/4 at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic, also at the Armory. So he topped that by more than seven inches. He’s also now well beyond his outdoor PR of 45-4 1/2 from states last year.

His mark is No. 1 in New Jersey this year and No. 6 in South Jersey history.

Here’s a look at all the 45-foot indoor jumpers in South Jersey history:
