Washington Township junior Trevor Szilier was the fastest South Jersey runner in the various state meets Saturday on an unusually slow Holmdel County Park 5,000-meter course.
Szilier placed 2nd in the Group 4 race in 16:01, just a couple seconds off the Washington Township Holmdel record of 15:59 set by Anthony Dentino when he placed 4th at the 2010 meet.
Szilier’s 2nd-place finish is best ever by a Miinuteman runner at states. Bryan Skelly placed 3rd at the 1998 meet behind Jon Fasulo of Hunterdon Central and Nate Miller of Highland.
Nobody under 16 minutes today but a bunch under 17, including Group 1 winner Joe Saicic who was only six seconds off the Glassboro Holmdel record of 16:07 set by Elijah Whittaker when he won the 2023 state Group 1 title.
Lots more lists to come in the next few days, including the 100-fastest girls at some point soon!
