Ocean City’s Maeve Smith, a Villanova sophomore, ran her fastest all-course 6,000 ever and recorded a top-10 finish Friday at the Big East Championships in Hanover County, Ca.
Smith ran 20:27 and placed 10th over 6,000 meters at Pole Creek Park just east of Mechanicsville. Her previous all-course PR was 20:40 in her last race, Pre Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., earlier this month.
Smith, who placed 26th at Big East last year, tied her best finish ever in a conference meet. She was also 10th in the 5,000 on the track this past May in Storrs, Conn.
Smith was Villanova’s 3rd finisher. The Wildcats placed 2nd to Providence, 36-44.
‘Nova races two weeks from today at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Lehigh’s course in Bethlehem and Lower Saucon Township. Villanova is ranked 4th in the Mid-Atlantic. Providence is ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region.
