In first collegiate race, Brandeis’s Ben Weiner of Cherokee takes 2nd in Wellesley Invite!!!!!!

Brandeis freshman Ben Weiner from Cherokee, in his first collegiate race, placed 2nd in the Wellesley XC Invitational Saturday at Neholden Golf Course in Wellesley, Mass.

Weiner ran 16:31 over 5,000 meters for Brandeis, ranked 10th in the East Region in the initial USTFCCCA poll.

Weiner finished 50 meters behind junior teammate Hugh Lickider, the overall winner in 16:20. Brandeis won the team title with 15 points, packing its five scorers in 36 ½ seconds.

One weird note about this race: Brandeis was the only team entered.

Rowan’s Colin Patterson from Haddon Heights records 1st collegiate victory in season-opening Salisbury XC Classic!!!!!!

Rowan junior Colin Patterson from Haddon Heights ran an 8,000-meter all-course PR and recorded his 1st collegiate win in track or cross country at the Salisbury Fall Classic.

Patterson ran 25:14 at WinterPlace Park & Equestrian Center outside Salisbury, Md. His previous-best 8,000 time on any course was a 25:27 a year ago today on Stockton’s course in Galloway Township.

Patterson won by 40 meters over Salisbury senior Tristan Dutton, who placed 2nd in 25:21.

Senior Matthew Conway from Haddon Township also broke into the top 10 with a 9th-place finish in 25:49.

Also in Rowan’s scoring group were senior Anthony Faust from Bishop Eustace [14th in 26:08], freshman Giovanni LaPietra of Columbia High in East Greenbush [15th in 26:11] and junior Aidan Brad of Williamstown [16th in 26:11].

The Profs finished 3rd, behind Salisbury [32] and Navy [37]. Rowan is ranked 2nd in the USTFCCCA Metro Region, behind only Moravian.

Swarthmore won the team title 23-51 over Ursinus.

Knoll ran within five seconds of his 5,000 all-course PR of 16:35 set at last year’s Olympic Conference meet on the DREAM Park speedway in Logan Township. Knoll’s high school teammate, Noah Stapleton, a Swarthmore freshman, placed 25th in 18:06.

Bucknell’s Shaelan McNally from Paul VI wins season-opening Lehigh Invitational!!!!!!

In her first race since February, Paul VI graduate Shaelan McNally, a Bucknell sophomore, won the season-opening Lehigh Invitational Friday.

McNally ran 21:06 over the 6,000-meter course at Lehigh’s Goodman campus, winning by 120 meters over senior teammate Caryn Rippey, who was 2nd in 21:33.

It was McNally’s first race since she ran a PR 17:47.52 in an indoor 5,000 in Youngstown, Ohio, on Feb. 14. Her time is a big 6,000 all-course best. Last fall she ran 21:34 in a meet at Lafayette College in Easton in November.

McNally, from Haddon Heights, led a 1-2-3-4 Bucknell finish. The Bison outscored West Virginia 21-63 to win the team title. Bucknell is ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region.

In her first collegiate race, St. Joe’s freshman Chloe Care of Ocean City placed 27th out of 91 runner in 23:16.0. She was the Hawks’ fourth finisher.

In the men’s meet, St. Joe’s sophomore Matt Hoffman of Ocean City placed 17th out of 98 runners covering the 6,000-meter course in 18:39. St. Joe’s senior Josh Forrest of Collingswood was 20th in 18:41, and junior Ian Romea of Haddonfield 24th in 18:43.6 followed by Lehigh sophomore Will Mrozonski from Paul VI, 25th in 18:45.9.

St. Joe’s outscored Bucknell 43-56 to win the team title. Bucknell is ranked 11th in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region.

The USTFCCCA is the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Most of the course is in Bethlehem, although the section around the three-mile mark just south of Interstate 78 and just east of Mountain Drive South is in Lower Saucon Township

Let’s take a look at where all 52 South Jersey runners who finished in the top 100 in last year’s XC Meet of Champions are running this fall!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s a look at where all South Jersey runners who finished in the top 100 in the boys and girls Meet of Champions last year will be running this fall.

Out of 52 runners – 29 boys and 23 girls – 32 are back in high school and presumably still running XC. And out of the 20 who graduated  – 10 boys and 10 girls – we found colleges for all but two. If you have any information on Clearview’s Ethan Worst or Moorestown’s Gabrielle Joseph (or if any of these are incorrect) please let us know!

As Kinney / Foot Locker XC ends its 46-year run, here’s a look at every New Jersey finalist in meet history!!!!!!

With word coming down Thursday that after 45 years the Kinney / Foot Locker cross country series is ending we thought we’d take a look back at New Jersey’s history at Foot Locker Nationals.

The first national XC championships began as Foot Locker in 1979, with the championship race held at Balboa Park in San Diego. The finals moved to Disney World in Orlando in 1981 and 1982 before moving back to San Diego in 1983. It returned to San Diego from 1997 through 2001. Kinney became Foot Locker in 1993 and for one year – in 2021 – it was known as Eastbay.

Hopefully, this is a complete list of New Jersey Foot Locker finalists, but if someone is missing please let me know!

CURTIS THOMPSON BLASTS THE 3RD- AND 4TH-BEST JAVELIN THROWS OF HIS LIFE TO WIN NACAC CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In what was likely his final tuneup before the World Championships, five-time U.S. javelin champion Curtis Thompson popped the 3rd– and 4th-best throws of his life Sunday evening at the NACAC Championships in the Bahamas.

Thompson, a 2014 Florence High School graduate, won the NACAC Championships with a 286-2 on his 2nd throw at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex in Freeport. The NACAC is the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association.

His winning throw was just 21 inches shy of his lifetime-best 287-11, which he threw at the Texas Relays in March in Austin. Thompson goes into the World Championships ranked 4th in the world this year and 3rd in U.S. history.

Thompson also had a 282-8 on his 3rd throw and averaged 269-6 on his five legal throws, which would have been good enough to win the meet. This is the first time he’s ever hit 280 feet twice in the same meet.

Delsea’s Josh Awotunde won the shot put at NACACs on Friday, so South Jersey not only won two throws at the U.S. Championships but two more at the NACAC Championships. Both Awotunde and Thompson will compete at Worlds next month in Tokyo.

Thompson now has the four-longest throws by an American this year and 10 of the top 14. Five of the seven-best throws of his life have come since March.

Delsea’s Josh Awotunde follows U.S. Nationals win with NACAC championship in the Bahamas!!!!!!

Delsea’s Josh Awotunde followed his historic shot put win at U.S. Nationals earlier this month with a win at the NACAC Championships Friday in the Bahamas.

Awotunde won the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Championships with a throw 71-1 ½ at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex in Freeport. It was his first meet since his lifetime-best 73-8 ¾ – No. 17 in world history – at the U.S. Championships on Aug. 3 in Eugene, Ore.

That’s his all-time 13th-best throw and his fifth throw over 70 feet so far this season. Awotunde will represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Tokyo next month.

Awotunde won by about 2 ½ feet over Olympic finalist and Mexican national record holder Uziel Muñoz, who threw 68-6 ½ on his 3rd attempt.

Awotunde opened with a 67-4 ¾ and a 68-0 ¼ before hitting his 71-1 ½ and then 69-0 ¾, 69-6 and 67-6 ¼ in the finals. He had the three-best throws of the competition.

Also, Gabriel Moronta of Pleasantville, now competing for the Dominican Republic, ran 46.09 in the 400 prelims and missed qualifying for the final by 5-100ths of a second.

Florence’s Curtis Thompson, now a five-time U.S. champion, throws the javelin on Sunday.

Pleasantville rising sophomore Isabella Alvarez wins AAU national heptathlon title!!!!!!!!

Isabella Alvarez, a rising sophomore at Pleasantville, won a national age-group heptathlon title at the AAU National Junior Olympic Championships near Houston.

Alvarez, who won the hurdles and shot put at the state Group 2 meet in South Plainfield and also placed in the high jump and long jump, scored 4,824 points to win the 15-16-year-old heptathlon at Humble (Texas) High School.

She had the top marks in the high jump, shot put and javelin and won by 453 points.

On Day 1, Alvarez ran 15.28 in the 100-meter hurdles for 805 points, high jumped 5-5 for 795 points, threw the shot 36-10 ¼ for 610 points and ran 27.02 in the 200 for 710 points.

On Day 2, she long jumped 17-7 ¼ for 663 points, threw the javelin 118-1 for 591 points and ran the 800 in 2:33.44 for 650 points.

She set PRs in the 200, javelin and 800. Her previous PRs were 27.08, 114-10 and 2:35.35.

Alvarez also tied for 3rd in the high jump with a 5-5 clearance on her 1st attempt.

A look at all 247 South Jersey athletes who have placed in the top 8 at U.S. Nationals … from 1906 through 2025!!!!!!!!

Last time I attempted a list of all-time South Jersey runners, jumpers and throwers who have placed in the top eight at U.S. N Nationals I was missing some very important athletes from the 1940s.

Thanks in great part to Bill Collins for helping me fill in the blanks. Did you know Bill was a hell of a softball player back in the day? He once went 7-for-7 in a double-header against my team in the old South Jersey Sunday Men’s Doubleheader League.

Anyway, some of the top U.S. stars of the 1940s were Archie Harris of Atlantic City, John Borican of Bridgeton and a new name for me, Joshua Williamson of Atlantic City. At the 1941 U.S. Championships, Borican, Williamson and Harris placed 1st, 3rd and 5th in the decathlon. The event was held at Bridgeton. You’ll see those three names throughout these results in the early and mid-40s.

Remember, through 1988, U.S. track had both a national championship meet and Olympic Trials in Olympic years. It wasn’t until 1992 they combined the meets and the Trials served as Nationals.

South Jersey has now had at least one top-eight finisher 21 straight years. Thanks to Curtis Thompson and Josh Awotunde, this was the first time two South Jersey men have won national titles in the same year in 35 years – since Vince Labosky won the javelin and Carl Lewis won the 100 back in 1990 in Norwalk, Calif.

As always, corrections and additions are welcome!
