Bishop Eustace senior Anya Kazemi ran a 33-second Holmdel PR Saturday and placed 2nd in the state Parochial B race at Holmdel County Park.

Kazemi ran 19:55 and placed 2nd to Blythe Dudley of Villa Walsh Academy of Morristown, who ran 19:24 to win the state title.

Kazemi’s previous Holmdel best was 20:28 in September at Shore Coaches.

Eustace placed 4th with 111 points.

Kazemi has had an outstanding year, with top-5 finishes in her last four major races – 3rd in the South Jersey Open, 4th in the Olympic Conference, 4th in the Bob Kiessling Invitational. She’ll race in the Meet of Champions next Saturday back at Holmdel.

Kerry O’Day became Cherokee’s 2nd-fastest runner ever at Holmdel Saturday morning with her 4th-place finish at the state Group 4 meet.

O’Day, a senior, ran 18:41, her fastest time on the historic 5,000-meter layout by 43 seconds. O’Day had run 19:24 at the 2021 Meet of Champions.

The only faster Cherokee girl at Holmdel is Megan Lacy, one of six South Jersey runners to break 18 minutes at Holmdel. Lacy’s fastest Holmdel time was a 17:55 at the 2010 Group 4 meet.

O’Day’s time makes her the 4th-fastest performer from Burlington County ever at Holmdel and the 8th under 19 minutes:

Cherokee junior Megan Niglio and Williamstown 1st-year senior XC runner Alyssa Boucher also recorded top-10 finishes, Niglio in 8th in 19:30 and Boucher in 9th in 19:37.

Niglio’s previous Holmdel best was a 19:48 at the 2021 Meet of Champions and Boucher’s was 20:23 in September at Shore Coaches.

Cherokee placed 4th with 135 points and Cherry Hill East was 7th with 203 points.

Thirteen years ago, Highland senior Megan Venables ran 17:27.83 to win the 2010 state Group 3 title at Holmdel. That broke a course record that had stood for 27 years. In 1983, Janet Smith of J.P. Stevens ran 17:35 to win the Meet of Champions. That broke the previous course record of 17:40 set in 1982 by Washington Township’s Michelle Rowen (who broke the course record of 18:01 set in 1981 by Smith).

Venables lost her course record in 2018 to Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High of Thiells, N.Y., who ran a ridiculous 16:21 at the Shore Coaches Invitational in her only race ever at Holmdel. Tuohy is currently running for North Carolina State, where she’s a four-time NCAA champion. Charlotte Bednar of Lawrenceville School [17:21] and Kate Wiser of Pomeraug High in Southbury, Conn. [17:26] ran faster in 2000 and then in 2021 Angelina Perez of Lakeland of Wanaque ran 17:07.

The closest anybody has gotten to Venables since her 17:27 in 2010 is Briana Gess’s 17:45 at the 2013 Meet of Champions.

Fastest this year state-wide at Holmdel is Northern Burlington junior Liliah Gordon, who ran 18:18 to win the C race at Shore Coaches in September. The last South Jersey girl to go faster was Mainland’s Alyssa Aldridge, who ran 17:55 when she won the 2016 Meet of Champions.

Some 35 years ago, Paul VI’s Jason DiJoseph won the state Parochial A race, out-racing CBA’s John Coyle and leading PVI to a 27-48 win over CBA for the team title.

DiJoseph’s time was 15:16, which shattered the course record of 15;35.1 set four years earlier by North Hunterdon’s Andy Martin at the 1984 state Group 3 meet. He broke his own South Jersey course record of 15:36 that he set in 1987 at the Parochial A race.

All these years later, DiJoseph’s time remains the South Jersey record at Holmdel. His time has been surpassed by five runners – Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s ran 14:53 in 2011, Joe Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North 14:56 in 2009, Marco Langon of Bridgewater-Raritan 15:06 in 2021 and Jackson Barna of Ridge 15:13 also in 2021.

But the closest any South Jersey runner has come to DiJoseph is Kevin Antczak’s 16:29 when he placed 2nd to Allentown’s Liam Murphy [15:23] in the 2019 Meet of Champions.

Before DiJoseph came along, the South Jersey record at Holmdel was 16:02, set by Oakcrest’s Ron Deckert at the 1980 state Group 3 meet, when he was 2nd to Manalapan’s Tom Fischer, who ran 15:59.

The course runs a lot faster than it used to – and runners are a lot faster than they used to be – and 65 of the 72 sub-16 times ever recorded by South Jersey runners on the hilly 5,000-meter layout have been recorded since 2000.

Here is a look at every race at 16:30 or faster by a South Jersey runner since Holmdel County Park was first used for New Jersey cross country races in 1976. That’s almost half a century of performances. Girls list coming later today and team lists tomorrow!

Clearview graduate Anas Bensaoud of Rowan College South Jersey ran 28:22 and finished 300 meters ahead of the field over the weekend at the NJCAA Region 19 Championships.

Bensaoud ran 28:22 over 8,000 meters at at Lancaster County Central Park in West Lampeter Township, Pa., finishing more than a minute ahead of 2nd-place Parker Stoner of Thaddeus Stevens College of Lancaster.

Rowan College South Jersey won its first Region 19 team title since 2014, outscoring 2nd-place Brookdale of Lincroft, Middletown Township, Monmouth County, 24-51.

RCSJ’s top five are all Gloucester County alums. Charlie Hepler from Delsea placed 3rd, Delsea’s Branden Lachowicz 5th, Gavin Casella of Kingsway 7th and John Schilling of Deptford 8th. Sixth-man Derek Wyllie from Gloucester County Tech was 16th.

In the women’s race, Courtney O’Hara of Gateway placed 2nd in 21:46.30 over 5,000 meters, Woodbury graduate Alexandra Campo was 7th, Mackenzie Cochran of Washington Township 8th, Williamstown’s Madison O’Donnell 11th and Grace Wahl of Washington Township 23rd, and Rowan won its second consecutive women’s team title 26-31 over Bergen County College of Paramus.

This is the first time since 2007 Rowan College South Jersey – formerly Gloucester County College – has swept the Region 19 men’s and women’s races.
