Mainland’s Sophia Day obliterates her own Atlantic County 800 record, wins first state title!!!!!!

Mainland sophomore Sophia Day shattered her own Atlantic County 800 record Saturday with a commanding win in the state Group 3 meet at the Bubble.

In her fourth lifetime 800, Day ran 2:15.59 and remained unbeaten, finishing about 15 meters ahead of 2nd-place Jenai Berry of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, who ran 2:18.16.

Day ran a county-record 2:17.76 at Ocean Breeze about a month ago in her first 800 and 2:21.49 at the Bubble a few days later. She lowered her PR and county record to 2:17.71 when she won sectionals. The previous Atlantic County indoor best was a 2:18.10 by Oakcrest’s Nijgia Snapp at 2008 Group 4 sectionals at the Bubble.

Her time is No. 16 in South Jersey history.
