Delsea junior Greg Masso popped three straight shot put PRs Tuesday night at the Cherokee Throw Down #2.
Masso came into the meet with an indoor shot put PR of 52-2 from the Cherokee Throw Down #1 two weeks ago. His outdoor PR is 52-8 ¼ from Group 2 sectionals last spring at Delsea, where the Crusaders swept the top three spots behind senior Jason Nwosu and Josh Caudill along with Masso.
On Tuesday, Masso opened with a near-indoor PR of 51-11 ½ before hitting 52-2 ¼, 53-5 and a huge finish with a 54-8.
The average of his four throws was 53-0 ½, beyond his previous indoor and lifetime personal bests.
Masso’s two-foot PR is the No. 1 throw in South Jersey this year, bumping Cinnaminson senior Malicah Etienne, who threw 54-2 last week at the state Group 2 relays at the Bubble. It’s No. 6 in the state this year and No. 2 among underclassmen.
He’s the seventh Delsea thrower to surpass 54 feet indoors. The list includes Josh Awotunde, who placed 3rd in the World Championships in Eugene in July.
62-0 ½ … Jason Nwosu, 2022
58-8 ¾ … Bill Goldsborough, 2018
57-8 ¼ … Josh Awotunde, 2013
57-5 … Joe Metzger, 2021
55-4 ¾ … Ryan Knight, 1996
54-8 … Greg Masso, 2023
54-6 ½ … Josh Caudill, 2022
Glassboro junior Damere Lassiter also hit a big PR at Cherokee. Lassiter placed 2nd with a 51-5 ½ on his final throw. Lassiter’s previous PR was a 50-4 last week at Ocean Breeze, his first time over 50 feet.
Etienne placed 3rd with a 49-10 on his first attempt, and another Delsea thrower, junior Tyler Habersham-Agbemenu, hit a massive PR with a 47-11 ½ in just his 3rd lifetime meet. His previous PR was a 42-8 ¾ at the Bubble over the weekend.
