Shawnee grad Amanda Demko of TCNJ lowers PR, wins 3rd straight NJAC 400 title!!!!!!!!

Shawnee grad Amanda Demko, a sophomore at The College of New Jersey, won her third straight NJAC 400-meter dash championship on Monday.

Demko ran a personal-best 56.15 to win the 400 at the New Jersey Athletic Conference championships on her home track in Ewing.

She was only 21-100ths of a second off the meet record of 55.94 set 39 years ago by Natalie Jordan of William Paterson in the 1983 meet at Glassboro State. Jordan went on to win the 400 at the NCAA Division 3 Championships in Naperville, Ill., with a meet-record 54.73.

Demko is now 3-for-3 in the 400 at the NJAC championships. She won the outdoor title last spring in 57.91 and the indoor title in 57.68.

Her time Monday ranks No. 5 in TCNJ history. She’s No. 8 indoors after just one season. She’s also No. 11 nationally in NCAA Division 3, which should qualify her for the Division 3 Nationals .

Demko also ran the second leg on TCNJ’s winning 400-meter relay team. Ashlyn MacLure of Nashoba Regional High in Bolton, Mass., led off, Demko ran the second leg and Maria Grill of Whippanny Park and Valandra Riggins of Lawrence finished up. The Lions ran 47.13, beating Ramapo by 3-100ths of a second. That’s No. 7 in NCAA Division 3 and a qualifier for nationals.

Demko didn’t run on TCNJ’s 4-by-4 Monday but did run on their fastest team this year along with Ocean City graduate Erin Hanlon, Allishon Uhl of Park Ridge and Riggins. That group ran 3:50.02 at Widener University in Chester, Pa., last month, which ranks 9th in Division 3. Hanlon, Uhl and Erin Buquicchio of Pascack Hills ran on that team, which will also run at Nationals.

She also PR’d in the 200 with a 25.29 in the trials and placed fifth in the final.

Woodstown grad Molly Lodge, a Rowan freshman, PR’d in both of those races with a 25.10 in the 200 trials and 56.88 in the 400. She placed 4th in both races.

Demko’s fastest high school 400 was a 58.54 at the 2020 indoor Meet of Champions at the Bubble. And she ran 58.66 outdoors two months later at Group 4 sectionals at Washington Township.

She lowered her PR to 57.46 last April in a meet at Franklin Field and ran an indoor PR of 57.68 at last year’s NJAC meet at Ocean Breeze. She dipped under 57 for the first time last month with a 56.99 in a meet at Stockton University in Galloway Township, PR’d again last month with a 56.92 in Princeton and then recorded her third PR in three major outdoor meets on Monday.

TCNJ outscored 2nd-place Rowan 245-192 to win its third straight team title and 30th since 1986, the first 10 as Trenton State College.

Division 3 nationals are scheduled for May 26-28 at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Millville’s Treshan Stevenson, Sterling’s Marquise Young help Rowan dominate 400IH at NJAC Championships!!!!!

Rowan’s John Owens, Treshan Stevenson, Marquise Young and Joe DeVito swept the top four spots in the 400-meter hurdles Monday on Day 2 of the NJAC Championships in Ewing.

Owens, a senior from West Windsor-Plainsboro North, won the race with a personal-best 52.98; Stevenson, a freshman from Millville, was 2nd with a PR 53.24; Young, a junior from Sterling, placed 3rd with a PR 54.16; and DeVito, a junior from Jackson Liberty, took 4th with a near-PR of 54.19.

That’s 29 of a possible 39 points in the intermediates on the Profs’ way to their 7th straight New Jersey Athletic Conference team title.

Those four now rank No. 7, 10, 28 and 29 in all of NCAA Division 3 for top-ranked Rowan.

Owens’ previous PR was a 53.50 just two weeks ago on the same track. Stevenson lowered his PR from 53.94 in the same meet as Owens. Young shaved nearly 2 ½ seconds off his previous PR of 57.23 from Baltimore last month. And DeVito ran just 5-100ths of a second off his PR of 54.14 from last year’s NJAC meet.

Owens, Young and Stevenson also ran on Rowan’s winning 1,600-meter relay team, which ran 3:15.30. They were joined by Washington Township’s Jake Kolodziej, who also won the 800.

Young also won the 110-meter highs with a personal-best 14.57, which is No. 21 in Division 3.

His previous PR was 14.70 in Auburn last month. He’s run more than half a second over the 42-inch hurdles in college than he ran over the 39-inch barriers in high school, where he had a 15.10 PR.

Eastern grad Jewel Ash runs U.S. #17 time in 400 hurdles in Big South trials!!!!!!!!!!

Eastern graduate Jewel Ash, a sophomore at Charleston Southern, ran another 400-meter intermediate hurdles PR Monday and broke the meet record at the Big South Conference Championships.

Ash ran 57.16 in the trials at Vert Stadium at High Point (N.C.) University, shattering the meet record of 57.86 set in 2013 by Jessica Gelibert of Coastal Carolina in Lynchburg, Va.

Her time is No. 13 in NCAA Division 1 this year and No. 17 among U.S. women . It’s also 7th-fastest ever by a woman from New Jersey (see list below).

Ash lowered her PR and school record from 57.43, which she ran last month in Columbia, S.C.

Ash ran 59.50 as a freshman and won the Big South title with a 1:00.51.

This spring, she dipped under 60 seconds for the first time at the Raleigh Relays in March, then lowered her best time to 58.83 at the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro in early April and then to 57.43 in Columbia.

In Mondays trials, the only other hurdlers under 60 seconds were Campbell sophomore Chastity Pickett, who ran 58.73, and Howard sophomore Dejah Grant, who ran 59.82 to win the first of two semis.

The final is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday.

Ash’s time is less than half a second off the standard to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials scheduled for June 23-26 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Here’s a look at the fastest intermediate hurdlers in history hailing from New Jersey:

52.23 … Sydney McLaughlin [Union Catholic], Oct. 4, 2019, Doha, Qatar
55.78 … Tonya Lee [Rancocas Valley], April 21, 1996, Walnut, Calif.
56.21 … Krystal Cantey [Winslow Twp.], May 26, 2007, Gainesville, Fla.
56.87 … Evann Thompson [Lenape], May 30, 2014, Jacksonville, Fla.
56.91 … Angela Lee [Franklin Twp.], May 24, 1998, Fairfax, Va.
57.14 … Leslie Njoku [McNair Academic], June 8, 2011, Des Moines, Iowa
57.16 … Jewel Ash [Eastern], May 9, 2022, High Point, N.C.
58.38 … Ste’yce McNeil [Winslow], May 2, 2015, Starkville, Miss.

Washington Twp.’s Jake Kolodziej was NJAC 800, Ocean City’s Tyler Greene 4th with big PR!!!!!!

Rowan junior Jake Kolodziej from Washington Township won his first conference title Monday, and freshman teammate Tyler Greene placed 4th in the 800 with a PR.

Kolodziej ran 1:55.34 to win the New Jersey Athletic Conference 800 at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, and Greene ran 1:56.97.

Kolodziej was out in 57.41 and closed in 57.94 to overtake Ramapo freshman Matthew Cortez, who led with a lap to go.

Greene, racing in an unseeded heat, lowered his PR from 1:57.95, which he just ran two weeks ago on the same track. He came into the meet ranked 17th in the 800 in the NJAC and seeded 12th.

Paulsboro’s Edgar Rosa, Ocean City’s Lane Owens help Rowan sweep TOP FIVE spots in javelin at NJAC Championships!!!!!!

Rowan’s remarkable fleet of javelin throwers turned in a dominating performance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference championships on Sunday.

Sophomore Greg Poloso of Wayne Valley, junior Edgar Rosa from Paulsboro, freshman Lane Owens from Ocean City, junior Dan McAleavey from Howell and sophomore Julio LeBron from  Memorial of West New York swept the top five spots, which means the Profs scored 33 points in one event as they sought the team title.

The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, was moved to Sunday and Monday because of bad weather on Saturday.

Poloso won the event at 211-7, with Paulsboro’s Rosa second at 211-5 and freshman Lane Owens [PR 209-7] and McAleavey [208-3] not far back. LeBron threw 190-11 for fifth.

Poloso had three throws over 210 feet, Rosa had four over 200 feet, Owens two over 200 feet and McAleavey three over 200.

All five entrants from Rowan threw over 190 feet. Nobody else from any other NJAC school hit 190 feet.

They combined for the 18-best throws of the meet.

Early on Day 2, Rowan led The College of New Jersey 91-32, which means Rowan’s javelin team had single-handedly scored enough points to take the lead as the Profs shoot for their seventh straight team title (there was no meet in 2020).

Poloso, McAleavey and Rosa rank No. 1, 2 and 3 in NCAA Division 3 with PRs of 230-11, 220-2 and 212-11. Owens is No. 5 with that 209-7 and LeBron is No. 16. Owens’ previous PR was 198-3 from a meet in Lexington, Va., in March.

Rowan is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division 3 by the USTFCCCA, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coachces of America.

South Jersey alums Jasmine Staten, TeSeanna Harris and Autumn DeMary sweep CACC hurdles for Bloomfield!!!!!

Three Bloomfield athlets from South Jersey swept the top three spots in the 100-meter hurdles Sunday at the CACC Championships in Lakewood.

Sophomore Jasmine Staten from Rancocas Valley won the race, junior Te’Seanna Harris – who attended C.A. Morgan Village Academy of Camden and competed for Camden High – and sophomore Autumn DeMary from Kingsway finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd and scored 24 points in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference meet at Georgian Court.

Staten, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division 2 with her 13.74 from a meet in Baltimore last month, overcame cold, windy conditions to win the highs in 14.11. She also placed 2nd in the 100 in a personal-best 12.24.

Harris was 2nd in 14.53, only 3-100ths of a second off her PR of 14.50, which she ran in Baltimore last month and was 5th in the 100 in 12.80. She’s competed at two CACC meets for Bloomfield and is now a six-time medalist.

And DeMary matched her PR in 3rd in 14.59. She also ran 14.59 in Baltimore last month. DeMary also ran a PR 12.82 in the 100 for 6th.

Keven Kevelier, Ahmad Brock both PR twice (so far) for Monmouth at MAAC Championships!!!!!!

Collingswood’s Keven Kevelier and Egg Harbor Township’s Ahmad Brock both posted PRs Sunday to help Monmouth sweep the top three spots in the triple jump at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in Lawrenceville.

They both also PR’d in a second event.

Kevelier, a sophomore, placed 2nd with a jump of 47-7 1/4 , and Brock, a freshman, was 3rd with a 47-6 ¼. Both nailed their best jumps of the competition on their 6th and final attempts, and they moved into the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in Monmouth history.

Senior Mohamed Diagouraga, a senior from Trenton and the school record holder, won the event at 49-4 ½. Monmouth scored a total of 25 points in the event.

Kevelier’s previous PR was a 47-5 ¼ from the 2020 Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington, and his college PR was 47-3 in a dual meet against Rider in Lawrenceville last April.

Kevelier fouled on three of his first four attempts and had a best jump of 45-11 ¼ before going 47-5 ¼ and 47-7 ¼ to finish. All four of his legal jumps ended in a quarter of an inch. What are the odds of that?

Brock had jumps of 44-11, 44-2 ½, 43-4 ½, 43-11 ¼ and 46-8 ¾ before the final round, where he surpassed 47 feet for the first time.

His lifetime best was a 46-11 im a dual meet for EHT against Atlantic City and Atlantic City Institute of Technology at Seneca last May, and his non-dual meet PR was a 45-2 ½ at the Delsea Crusader Field Meet last May.

Kevelier also PR’d in in the long jump with a 22-7 ¾ for 4th place. His previous PR was 22-2 ¼ this past winter at the Metro Atlantic Indoor Championships at the Armory.

And Brock also PR’d in the 100 trials with a 10.57 and qualified for the finals later Sunday. Brock’s previous 100 PR was a 10.96 just two weeks ago at Lehigh.

That 10.57 is No. 2 in school history, just 2-100ths of a second off the record of 10.55 set by Ahmier Dupree from Lakewood at the 2015 Greyhound Invite at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

Through nine of 21 events, Monmouth led Rider 128-87 in the team standings.

Kingsway’s Nicole Lipieta runs all-time Gloucester County #8 in 3,200 meters at Holmdel!!!!!

Kingsway junior Nicole Lipieta ran the 8th-fastest 3,200 in Gloucester County history Friday night at the Holmdel Twilight Series Night of 3200s.

Lipieta placed 6th in a loaded field in 10:55.18, No. 8 in the state this year and No. 1 in South Jersey. Her previous PR was 11:06.14 last year at the Cherokee Night of 3200s.

Lipieta is the third Kingsway girl to run under 11 minutes, joining Chelsea Ley, who ran 10:19.31 when she won the 2009 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield, and Rachel Vick, who ran 10:29.28 when she won the 2017 state Group 4 race at Egg Harbor.

The race at Holmdel produced seven of the 10-fastest 3,200 times in the state this year. Red Bank Catholic’s Cate DeSousa won in 10:25.54, 2nd-fastest in New Jersey this year behind Angelina Perez’s 10:17.71 on Friday in Clifton.

Cade Berardelli, Jason Nwosu become first S.J. teammates in history to both throw 170 feet in discus, four others over 150 feet!!!!!!

Delsea seniors Cade Berardelli and Jason Nwosu on Thursday became the first teammates in South Jersey history to both throw the discus 170 feet in the same season.

Competing at the 5/5– SJTCA Elite Meet | Tomahawk Timing meet at their home facility in Franklinville, Berardelli won the discus with a personal-best 174-11 bomb and Nwosu threws 172-1 for second.

They led an incredible five throwers over 150 feet.

Only seven South Jersey high schools have produced more than one 170-foot thrower in history. Delsea has produced five and is the only S.J. school with more than two.

Berardelli added more than 10 feet to his PR of 163-5, which he set last month in Westfield. He’s thrown farther at every major meet this year than the previous meet [148-0, 155-9, 163-5, 174-11]. He had a monster series, with three throws over 173 feet. After opening with a 140-5 and then PR’ing at 165-11, he threw 174-11, 173-10 and 174-7 – the four best throws of his life.

Nwosu, who has a PR of 177-10, also from Westfield, opened with a 148-10 before consecutive throws of 172-1, 164-3, foul, 171-5 and 154-8.

Nwosu and Berardelli now rank 17th and 189h in South Jersey history and No. 5 and No. 7 in Gloucester County history. They’re No. 3 and 6 in the state.

The only Delsea thrower to throw farther than either of them is Josh Awotunde, who threw 192-5 at the 2013 state Group 3 meet. Awotunde placed 5th in the World Championships this past winter at Belgrade.

Clayton senior Shane Thompson, St. Augustine senior Franklin Simms, Cinnaminson junior Malicah Etienne and Rancocas Valley junior Devon Brooks also surpassed 150 feet with personal bests.

Thompson was 3rd with a school-record 165-9 on his third attempt, No. 3 in South Jersey so far this year. Thompson’s previous PR was 149-10 at Woodbury last week, so he added nearly 16 feet. His throw is No. 10 in South Jersey Group 1 history and the top throw by a Group 1 athlete in New Jersey this year. He’s only 26 inches outside the all-time Gloucester County top-10.

Simms’ PR wasn’t quite so dramatic, but he did PR for the second straight meet. His previous best was a 157-0 at Fast Times at Cherokee last month. The only superior throws in South Jersey history by a non-public athlete were Cade Antonucci’s 169-1 in 2017 for Holy Spirit and Matt DeLiso’s 161-5 for Paul VI in 2003. Simms is now the No. 4 thrower in South Jersey.

Etienne’s 154-4 is 3rd-best this year by a New Jersey junior and No. 5 in South Jersey, behind Berardelli, Nwosu, Thompson and Simms. Believe it or not, his previous PR was 134-3 in a meet last May at Cherokee.

And Brooks took 6th with a 151-0 throw, adding 9 feet and 11 inches to his PR of 141-1 from a dual meet against Pennsauken and Northern Burlington last month. His throw is No. 7 in South Jersey this year.

Leah Howard wins wild javelin battle with Zoe Goldberg, Camryn Dirkes at South Jersey Elite!!!!!

One heck of a girls javelin competition Thursday night at the South Jersey Elite meet at Delsea between three of the top 10 javelin throwers in New Jersey – Millville junior Leah Howard, Eastern sophomore Zoe Goldberg and Mainland Regional senior Camryn Dirkes.

Howard popped a personal-best 134-10 to win the competition, Goldberg was second at 127-2 and Dirkes placed third with a PR of 125-7. Goldberg ranks No. 2 in the state with her 136-7 at the West Deptford Relays last month. Howard moved up to No. 4 and Dirkes to No. 9.

Dirkes threw her 125-7 on her third attempt and took the lead going into the finals. Howard then took the lead with her 134-10 on her fifth throw and Goldberg hit 127-2 on her final attempt. Howard finished with a 130-4, giving her the top two throws of the competition.

Howard’s throw is No. 5 in Cumberland County history with the new javelin [in use since 2002], best in six years. Goldberg was already at No. 4 in Camden County history with her mark from last month – we wrote about that here [https://sjtrackblog.com/2022/04/16/eastern-soph-zoe-goldberg-bombs-no-1-javelin-throw-in-new-jersey-this-year/]. And Dirkes is No. 11 in Atlantic County history.
