Breakthrough 1,600-3,200 double for Timber Creek senior Michael Henry at Camden County meet!!!

What an impressive breakthrough double for Timber Creek senior Michael Henry, who we haven’t seen much of the last couple years.

Henry ran 4:30.99 and 9:55.07 as a freshman but had no outdoor marks until he ran 9:45.63 last month at the Cherokee Night of 3200s.

Henry had success in XC – he was 6th at Group 3 sectionals this past fall at DREAM Park in Logan Township – but he fashioned quite a double Saturday, sweeping the 1,600 and 3,200 with big PRs at the Camden County Championships at Haddon Township.

In the 1,600, Henry ran 4:20.00, leading five runners under 4:26: Highland senior Cole Wassell [ 4:22.17], Triton junior Dennis Fortuna [4:22.60], Cherry Hill East senior Gabe Rodriguez [4:23.17] and Cherry Hill East senior Aidan Groff [4:25.95].

All five of them PR’d.

With a lap to go, Henry was in fifth, although about half a second separated the first five runners. He closed in 60.79 to win by a meter and a half over Wassell.

His time is No. 9 in the state this year and makes him No. 2 in South Jersey, behind Tobias Janssen of Haddonfield, who won the small-school race Ibn 4:18.08.

His previous PR appears to be a 4:27.76 he ran in March outdoors at the Cherokee Winter Distance Festival.

In the 3,200, Henry was out in 4:52.69 and came back in 4:44.87, closing in 2:16.47 and 66.11. Wassell finished second in 9:40.64 and senior Timber Creek teammate Giancarlo Vega was third in 9:42.76, four seconds below his previous PR of 9:46.70 from the Cherokee Night of 3200s last month.

Henry’s previous 3,200 PR was a 9:55.07 from freshman year sectionals at Delsea. The 9:37 is No. 11 in South Jersey this year and the fastest time that wasn’t recorded at Cherokee Night of 3200s.

Sincere Rhea runs 110HH PR in Big Ten trials, races in final Sunday!

Sincere Rhea ran a lifetime-best 13.89 Saturday in the 110-meter hurdles trials at the Big Ten Championships.

Rhea, a Penn State freshman from St. Augustine, placed second in the third of three heats at Demirjian Park in Champaign, Ill., to qualify for Sunday’s final. The winner of each heat plus the next-six fastest times advanced.

Rhea’s previous PR over the 42-inch barriers was 13.92 last month in a meet in Iowa City.

Rhea, the Big Ten indoor champion, https://sjtrackblog.com/2021/02/27/watch-this-video-of-the-closest-race-youll-ever-see-sincere-rheas-big-ten-hurdles-title/, moved up to No. 6 in Penn State history with the fastest time by a Nittany Lions hurdler in six years.

The final is scheduled for 2:25 p.m. Sunday

Pennsauken sophs Bryce Tucker and Ejani Shakir light up the track at BCSL Championships!

Huge afternoon for Pennsauken sophomores Bryce Tucker and Ejani Shakir at the BCSL Championships on Pennsauken High School’s super-charged new track.

Check out these times:

Tucker won the 400-meter intermediates in 54.28, won the 800 in 1:56.07 and placed second in the high hurdles in 15.25.

And Shakir won the 200 in 21.82 and the 400 in 48.89 and placed second in the long jump.

Tucker’s intermediates time is No. 1 in the state this year and fastest by a South Jersey sophomore in 10 years, since Willingboro’s Brandon Hill ran 53.79 at the 2011 South Jersey Group 2 meet at Buena. It’s not far off the Liberty Division meet record of 53.8 set in 1999 by Pemberton’s Napolean Suarez.

Tucker’s 1:56.07 is a personal best, surpassing his state indoor freshman record 1:56.75 from the 2020 indoor Meet of Champions, the last competitive 800 he ran. His time is No. 7 in the state this year and No. 2 in South Jersey, behind Kyle Rakitis’s 1:55.04 in March in Maplewood.

Since Tucker had his entire freshman year of outdoor track wiped away, this was his first-ever outdoor 800 or 400-meter intermediates race outside of dual meets.

Shakir’s 21.82 is No. 2 in the state behind Shamali Whittle of Nottingham’s 21.41 at Princeton last month and fastest in South Jersey this spring. It’s fastest by a South Jersey sophomore since Glassboro’s Juwan Johnson ran 21.60 at the 2013 Tri-County Championships at Delsea. Johnson is currently a wide receiver with the Saints.

Shakir’s 48.89 is No. 2 in the state this year behind Ridge’s Luke Roberts, who ran 48.56 at a meet at Ridge, and No. 1 in South Jersey on the MileSplit performnance list. It makes him the fastest South Jersey sophomore since Brandon Outlaw of Moorestown ran 48.52 at the 2015 Meet of Champions.

The Liberty Division meet records in the dashes are 21.40 by Willingboro’s Antonio Abey in 2007 and 47.3 by Rob Gary of Lenape in 1998.

Another sophomore, Premier Wynn, ran 57.05 for second in the 400IH, 49.45 for second in the 400 and 22.77 for third in the 200.

Rancocas Valley pole vaulter Abby Boggs clears N.J. #1 and all-time S.J. #6!!!

The minute we finished writing about Collingswood senior Fiona Basewitz clearing a South Jersey-best 11-1 in the pole vault, we finally get results from the BCSL meet at Pennsauken and … we have a new South Jersey best!

Rancocas Valley senior Abby Boggs won the Liberty Division vault at the Burlington County Scholastic League Championships at 11-6, which matches No. 1 in the state this year – Hunterdon Central’s Suzy Lacombe cleared 11-6 at the Randolph Relays last weekend – and is a new No. 1 in South Jersey this year.

Boggs’ clearance equals also No. 6 in South Jersey and No. 5 all-time in Burlington County , which dominates the top of the South Jersey pole vault list.

Boggs’ previous PR was 11-0, which she has cleared three times – in a couple dual meets in March – one outdoors, one at the Bubble – and again at the Deptford Spartan Relays earlier this month.

The previous meet record was 11-0 by Moorestown’s Jessica Kloss in 2005 and Moorestown’s Lauren Tauscher in 2007 and again in 2009.

Boggs also placed third in the high jump and triple jump for Rancocas Valley, which outscored Burlington Township 272 1/2-104 to win the team title.

Collingswood pole vaulter Fiona Basewitz moves up to all-time #11 in South Jersey history!

Collingswood senior Fiona Basewitz moved up to No. 1 on the all-time South Jersey pole vault performance list with an 11-1 clearance Saturday.

Basewitz won a terrific competition that saw three girls over 10 feet and two over 10-6 in the small-school division of the Camden County Championships at Haddon Township.

Her mark is No. 2 in Camden County history, behind only Jennifer Scott’s 11-3 at the 2019 Haddonfield Invitational. Scott currently vaults for Bucknell.

It’s also No. 3 in the state this year and No. 1 in South Jersey.

Basewitz, who is committed to attend William and Mary, had cleared 11 feet twice – at the Vertical Adventures Beach Vault in Atlantic City in August of 2020, and again in a dual meet against Haddonfield last month.

Haddonfield senior Robin Rosen cleared an outdoor PR 10-6 for second place (she cleared 11-0 at the 2020 indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze) and Audubon senior Sarah Parr cleared 10-0 for third. St. Joe’s of Hammonton grad Devin Martin wins FOUR conference titles for Georgian Court!!!

St. Joe’s of Hammonton graduate Devin Martin won not one, not two, not three but FOUR titles Saturday in the CACC Championships.

He broke two school records along the way.

Martin, a Williamstown native and a senior at Georgian Court, won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.84 into a 0.2 wind, the long jump at 22-6 1/4 and the triple jump with a big 48-10 1/4 jump at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships on his home track in Lakewood. He and teammate DaShawn Lamar-Baldwin shared the pole vault title. As the only entrants, they both cleared opening height of 8-0 1/2 and then shut down, sharing the 18 team points.

For Martin, the marks in the triple jump, long jump and high hurdles are all personal bests and the triple jump and hurdles marks are school records.

His triple jump mark ranks No. 27 in NCAA Division 2 and surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 47-10 1/4.

The only record Martin missed is the long jump, which is 23-1 set by current Georgian Court sophomore Dylan Breen from Lacey Township at a home meet last month. Breen finished second Saturday, two inches behind Martin.

Georgian Court, coached by former Holy Cross athlete Mike Murawski, won its fifth team title, more than doubling second-place Bloomfield, 262-112.

Martin’s previous triple jump PR was 46-7 at the Bill Fritz Invitational in Glassboro last month. Martin came into the spring season with a triple jump lifetime best of 46-5 from a meet at Ocean Breeze in the winter of 2020.

His previous long jump PR was a 21-4 1/2, also from the Bill Fritz Invite. Incredibly, Martin leaped 22-6 1/4 in what was only his second long jump competition since May of 2018.

In the 110 highs, Martin brought a PR of 15.04 into the conference meet. He ran that at the 2019 CACC meet on the same track, when he placed second to teammate Henry Jean-Michel.

Martin broke the Georgian Court hurdles record of 15.02 that Jean-Michel ran when he won the 2019 conference title and destroyed the triple jump mark of 46-6 3/4 set in March by Jeshurun Devero at the Stockton Invite in Galloway Township. Devero also surpassed his previous school record, hitting 48-1 1/4 for third place.

All of Martin’s marks were wind-legal: 0.5 in the triple jump, 0.0 in the long jump and -0.2 in the high hurdles.

In both horizontal jumps, Martin nailed his winning mark on his final attempt. He was sitting at 21-8 1/4 and in second place before his winning long jump mark and 47-10 and in third place before he popped his monster 48-10 1/4 triple.

Martin spent 2013, 2014 and 2016 at St. Joe’s of Hammonton, where he ran 14.90 and jumped 19-11 and 42-10 1/2.

As a junior at Holy Spirit, Martin hit 40-10 1/2 in the triple jump and 15.58 over the 39-inch hurdles. He was the 2015 state Parochial B champ in the 110 highs.

Sterling soph Jenovia Logan records huge high jump PR and equals #1 mark in New Jersey this year!

Sophomore Jenovia Logan hit a big high jump PR of 5-6 Saturday at the Camden County Championships at Haddon Township.

Logan joins Delsea freshman Alanna Woolfolk and Howell sophomore Samantha Strydesky as only the third New Jersey girl to clear 5-6 this year.

According to the MileSplit database, Logan’s previous high jump PR was a 5-2 in a dual meet against Haddonfield last month. As a sophomore who lost her freshman outdoor season and sophomore indoor season to the shutdown, she’s competing in her first season of track and field.

Here’s a look at the all-time South Jersey girls high jump top-50, so you can see where Logan fits in at 5-6:

Moorestown grad Brandon Outlaw shatters 400 PR, earns #2 seed going into ACC 400 final!

Moorestown grad Brandon Outlaw dropped his 400 PR Friday in the trials of the ACC Championships.

Outlaw, a junior at Virginia, was the second-fastest qualifier, winning the fourth of four heats in 46.20 and qualifying automatically for Saturday’s final.

That’s No. 5 in Virginia history.

The Atlantic Coast Conference track championships are being held at Paul Derr Track and Field Facility on the North Carolina State campus in Raleigh, N.C. – the one-time home of the National Scholastic Championships.

Virginia Tech’s Jacory Patterson, who won the first heat in 45.74, was the only faster qualifier. Patterson won the last two ACC 400s, the 2020 and 2021 meets.

Outlaw’s previous PR was 46.35 earlier this year in a meet in Raleigh, N.C.

At Moorestown, Outlaw ran 46.82 at the 2017 Central Jersey Group 3 sectionals at Bernards – No. 6 in South Jersey – and went on to win the Meet of Champions.

Winslow graduate Shakira Dancy runs big 200 PR, advances to finals at Big Ten Championships!

Shakira Dancy didn’t wait for the finals of the Big Ten 200 to PR. She took care of that in the trials.

Dancy, a Winslow graduate and now a junior at Michigan State, ran a personal-best 23.69 in the 200 trials at the Big Ten Championships at Demirjian Park in Champaign, Ill.

With the fifth-fastest time in the trials, Dancy advanced to the final, scheduled for 3:42 p.m. Sunday.

Dancy’s previous 200 PR was a 23.73 in her last race – the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., two weeks ago.

At Winslow, Dancy’s 200 PR was 23.85.
