The historic day Camden’s 4-by-4 team ran 3:09 and the entire all-time S.J. top-50 1,600-meter relay list!!!!!

Think about how fast 3:09.91 is for a high school 4-by-4. That’s an average of 47.5, which is nuts.

It’s been 19 years now since Camden set the state 1,600-meter relay record at adidas Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh, N.C., with the team of Maurice Young, Dwight Ruff, Jade Smith and John Morris blowing away the field.

And it’s not only a state record but No. 16 on the all-time U.S. list and fastest ever run by a school outside Texas or California.

Because it didn’t happen in South Jersey the local papers barely mentioned it.

Here’s the only mention I found using the Newspapers.com database, and it’s from a story in the Home News, a New Brunswick paper:

The_Central_New_Jersey_Home_News_Mon__Jun_18__2001_

Young led off with a 48.4 out of the hole, Ruff split 46.4 (he won the USATF Junior National intermediates title in Richmond – two hours away – the night before), Jade Smith split 47.8 and Morris anchored with a 47.3.

But the Panthers broke the state record of 3:11.2 set by the Edgewood team of Chris Bennett, Keith Gloster, Brian Bennett and Dennis Mitchell in 1984 at the old Delaware Valley Meet of Champions at Franklin Field.

Willlingboro, which had edged Camden at the Meet of Champions [3:12.44 to 3:12.57, with Edgewood third at 3:13.85] was second in 3:13.82.

As you can see, that period from 1999 through 2003 was a remarkable one for the 4-by-4 in South Jersey, with 13 of the top-24 times coming during that five-year stretch!

For the sake of comparison, only one performance on this list comes from the last 10 years, Egg Harbor’s crazy 3:13.08 on its home track at the 2017 Meet of Champions.

A tribute to Winslow’s 17-year-old state-record 1:24.49 and the full South Jersey all-time 800-meter relay top-50!!!

Think about how fast 1:24.49 is. That’s an average of about 21.1 per split for an 800-meter relay. And that’s crazy.

That’s what Winslow ran at adidas Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh in 2003, and 17 years later it remains not only the South Jersey record but the state record.

At the time it was No. 7 in U.S. history and today, all these years later, it’s still somewhere around No. 35.

Reuben McCoy, Anthony Miles, Albert Harris and Antraye Miles won the race and broke the South Jersey record of 1:26.05, set by Camden in 2000 at what was then called Foot Locker Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh, by more than a second and a half.

The previous state record was 1:26.0, set in 1973 – 30 years earlier – by the Somerville team of Ricky Jones, Ray Hoagland, Gary Hall and Neville Plummer at the New Jersey Relays at Williams Field in Elizabeth. (Hall – who was mainly a high jumper – replaced Collen Plummer, who was suspended for the meet by coach Joe Figliolino for a minor violation of team rules. Plummer pulled his hammy at the end of the race and didn’t run again that year.)

Camden ran 1:24.90 a year later at adidas Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh, but since then nobody in South Jersey has run within two seconds of Winslow’s time. And the fastest time any New Jersey school has run the last 15 years is a 1:26.59 by East Orange at a meet in Newark in 2018.

Because the race wasn’t held in New Jersey, there wasn’t anybody to write about this incredible accomplishment. This is all the Courier-Post had the next day:

Courier_Post_Sun__Jun_15__2003_

But 17 years later, Winslow’s 1:24.49 stands untouched and largely unchallenged. One of the greatest records in state history.

Camden, Camden, Camden, Camden, Camden and the rest of the all-time South Jersey 400-meter relay top-50 list!!!!!

You might notice a trend here. Camden ran 41.62 or faster every year from 2000 through 2004, which is amazing considering the entire program turns over every four years. But the Panthers kept running hot 400-meter relays every year.

Those Camden teams own three of the top four times in South Jersey history, four of the top eight and five of the top 11. In all, there are 11 Camden performances on the list. Edgewood / Winslow is next with eight, Deptford has six and Pennsauken four. Kennedy – which closed in 1989 – has three!

Think about that sort of sprint relay dominance. Camden ran 41.62 or faster five times during a five-year stretch. And every other South Jersey school in history ran that fast only six times combined.

Don’t tell Curtis Thompson, Chris and Nick Mirabelli and Cade Antonucci you can’t throw the new javelin far!!! It’s the all-time S.J. NEW javelin top-50 list!!!

The new javelin has been in use for 17 years now, and only nine South Jersey throwers have reached 200 feet during that span and only another 11 have hit 190 feet.

Compare that to the old javelin list, which we posted yesterday. Obviously the old javelin was in use much longer, from the dawn of New Jersey track in the 1930s through 2002. But 31 South Jersey throwers hit 210 feet or farther with the old implement.

The 50th spot on the old-jav list is 202-8. The 50th spot on the new-jav list is 182-11. So it’s a very different event this days.

The new javelin weighs the same as the old javelin – about two pounds. The changes were minor. The center of gravity was moved forward just a few inches and the tail is flattened out a bit. But the new javs look the same and throwers will tell you they feel the same. They just come down to Earth about 10 percent faster.

Which tells you how remarkable guys like Nick and Chris Mirabelli, Curtis Thompson and Cade Antonucci are. They were all among the top-20 American javelin throwers in 2019 — Thompson was No. 3 — and will all be among the best in the country when competition begins again.

Without further ado, here’s the all-time

From the 1960s through the 1990s, they were kings of the old javelin! Here’s the all-time S.J. “old javelin” top-50 list!!!

One unfortunate byproduct of the javelin change in 2003 was that it orphaned so many historic javelin marks.

With one rule change, decades of track and field history was erased.

High schools in New Jersey and across the country changed javelins after the 2002 season, going to the college implement, which has a different center of gravity that reduces distances.

Tomorrow, we’ll post the South Jersey “new” javelin all-time top-50, the current list, but today I want to give credit to all the early javelin greats – especially the guys from the 1960s and 1970s that track and field has forgotten.

Even though the “old” javelin was in use through the 2002 season, this list is packed with old marks.

The entire top 10 is from 1966 through 1986, and half of the top 50 marks – exactly 25 – are from the 1960s or 1970s. Another 17 are from the 1980s and six are from the first half of the 1990s, so if my math is correct there are only two marks from 1996 through 2002.

I welcome corrections and additions. Just use the comment section to send me details!

Tomorrow it’s the new javelin top-50 and then we’ll get started on relays!

A Heisman Trophy winner and the South Jersey boys discus top-50 all-time performance list!!!

Check out the discus all-time top-50 list. How many former NFL players can you find?

There’s at least five – including a Heisman Trophy winner – who at least made it into an NFL training camp or were on a practice squad and a few who spent significant time in the league. Who can name all five? Maybe there are more … if you find six or more, you’ll get an all-time South Jersey top-50 performance list t-shirt (if there were such a thing).

Tomorrow we’ll continue with the old javelin and then on Thursday the new javelin!

As always, please don’t tweet corrections or omissions because I won’t see them. Send them to me in the comment section and I’ll get ’em corrected ASAP.

In search of Harry Dilks … and the all-time South Jersey shot put top-50!!!

I had been trying for years to find information about former South Jersey shot put record holder Harry Dilts.

But none of the usual search methods turned anything up. It seemed like he didn’t even exist!

I finally realized on Sunday that’s because his name is actually … Harry Dilks. At some point it was entered incorrectly into some all-time lists, and since I was in 5th grade when he threw, I had no idea I was perpetuating the error for years.

Honestly, when you’re going through tiny 6-point type in old newspapers clippings, that “k” can look like a “t.”

Dilks placed second in the 1971 Meet of Champions at Highland Park with a throw of 61-10 1/2. That broke the existing South Jersey record of 58-8 1/2, set in 1965 by Bob Baylor. Dilks placed second at the M-of-C behind Rudy Guevara of Essex Catholic, who bombed a 65-1, still No. 11 in Meet of Champions history. Overall, Guevara is still No. 11 in state history at 66-4.

Dilks remains No. 9 in South Jersey history. He held the South Jersey record for 19 years, until Chris Robinson of Penns Grove threw 64-4 1/4 at the 1990 Meet of Champions.

The record then changed hands three years in a row [Ray Wilks 64-5 in 1995, Ron Dayne 64-6 1/4 in 1996, Jon Kalnas 64-10 1/2]. Kalnas held it for 15 years until Braheme Days Jr. heaved a massive 68-8 1/2 when he won the 2012 Penn Relays, and that’s still No. 3 in state history.

Courier_Post_Mon__Jun_14__1971_

Dilks these days lives in West Hurley, N.Y., near Poughkeepsie, and works as a paramedic in nearby Rhinebeck, N.Y.

One more note about the shot: Bridgeton has six guys on this list and a seventh (Tavaris Wright) missed by a couple inches. No other school has more than three! Paulsboro, Cinnaminson, Delsea, Willingboro and Pennsauken have three each.

Bridgeton also has three of the seven 63-footers in South Jersey history!

Now that we’ve learned way too much about the South Jersey shot put history, here’s the all-time South Jersey outdoor shot put list! Errors and omissions, hit me up in the comment section!

Once upon a time, South Jersey was best in the U.S. in high jumping! Here’s why & the all-time S.J. boys outdoor top-50!!!!!

The five-year stretch from 1999 through 2003 was certainly the heyday of South Jersey high jumping.

During that span, seven high school high jumpers from across the United States cleared 7-3 1/4 or better, and three of them were from South Jersey!

In 1999, Millville’s Robert Jordan was U.S. No. 1 with his 7-4 1/4 at USATF Junior National Championships.

In 2000, Mainland’s Paul Klemic was U.S. No. 1 with his 7-4 1/2 at Foot Locker Nationals in Raleigh.

And in 2003, Willingboro’s Mike Morrison – who had cleared 7-4 1/2 indoors – shared the U.S. No. 1 ranking with Scott Sellers of Cinco Ranch, Texas. Both cleared 7-3 1/4 at adidas Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh, with Sellers winning on fewer misses.

Only four other jumpers nationally hit 7-3 1/4 or better during that same span: Mark Bradley of Arkansas Pine Bluff cleared 7-4 at the Doc Walker Relays in Texarkana, Texas, in 2000, Andra Manson of Brenham, Texas, cleared a national high school and U.S. Junior National record 7-7 at IAAF World Juniors in Kingston, Jamaica, in 2002, Teak Wilburn of Chino, Calif., cleared 7-4 1/4 – not sure where – and Sellers cleared 7-3 1/4 (and a year later cleared 7-5 at the Texas Relays).

No other South Jersey high jumpers have come within two inches of that trio. Drew Kanz of Seneca has come the closest, with his 7-1 at the 2009 Burlington County Open at Maple Shade.

Today – 17 years since their five-year run ended – Klemic, Jordan and Morrison still rank No. 1, 2 and 3 not just in South Jersey history but in state history. The only other New Jersey high jumper to clear 7-3 or better was Eric Taylor-Perry of Montclair, who went 7-3 in 1990.

Klemic still ranks 9th in U.S. history, Jordan is tied for 12th and Morrison is tied for 29th, although if you includes indoor marks he goes up to 12th.

So three of the top 12 high jumpers in U.S. history come from South Jersey and they all jumped in the span of five years!

The last decade has been a light one for South Jersey high jumpers. If you look at the all-time South Jersey top-50 below, only two of the 41 jumpers to clear 6-8 1/4 or better come from the last 10 years, both on their home track – Bridgeton’s Markquese Bell hit 7-0 at the 2016 Cape-Atlantic League meet and Delsea’s Ameer Banks cleared 6-10 at the 2015 South Jersey Invitational.

Willingboro leads the way with five jumpers over the bar at 6-8, Bridgeton and Pennsauken have four each, and Schalick, Bordentown and Edgewood/Winslow have three apiece.

The list is long, since there are 41 spots at 6-8 1/4 or better and over 30 jumpers have PR’d at 6-8. If you notice any errors or missing names, please let me know in the comment’s section! We start on the throws tomorrow!

Some amazing history in the South Jersey all-time boys outdoor top-50 pole vault list!!!!!

When I started putting the pole vault list together, my biggest fear was that there wouldn’t be 50 South Jersey vaulters who had cleared a height better than 14 feet.

Because to create a top-50 list, you have to include the top 50 plus ties. So if there were only 49 guys who had cleared at least 14-0 1/4, that would have meant I would have had to track down EVERY South Jersey vaulter in history who cleared 14 feet, and there are probably at least 50 of them.

But as it turned out, at least 52 vaulters have cleared 14-1 or better, so that saved me several hours of research!

Interesting that Danny Lamp in 1977 cleared 15-3 1/4 at the East Coast Relays in Elizabeth and broke the South Jersey record of 14-6, set by Cherry Hill East’s Ric Fisher, who cleared 14-6 at the 1971 South Jersey Meet of Champions at Haddon Township.

Ric Fisher S.J. record

Lamp’s South Jersey record stood for 14 years, until Brandon Kurtz of Absegami cleared 15-7 at the 1991 South Jersey Group 3 sectionals at Bridgeton. Bob Green of Haddon Heights cleared 16-0 at the inaugural South Jersey Invitational at Eastern, and his record has stood for 27 years. So the South Jersey pole vault record has only been broken twice in the last 41 years!

I’m confident one – or both – of Delsea’s Morales brothers, Nico and Marco, is capable of breaking Green’s record, and hopefully they get that chance!

The all-time South Jersey top-50 project moves onto the boys outdoor triple jump!!!

And onto the triple jump!

As you’ll see, this top-50 list is top-heavy with recent marks – seven of them from just last spring.

The triple jump is a recent addition to the sectional, state and Meet of Champions ledger, and until it was added in 2000 it wasn’t a part of any South Jersey county or conference meets either. Although it was contested much more often in North Jersey than South.

For South Jersey horizontal jumpers, the only real opportunities to triple jump were a couple invitationals, Easterns indoors and Penn Relays.

In all there are 33 from the past decade, 14 from the 2000’s and three from back-in-the-day – a 1976, a 1980 and a 1981. Oddly, there isn’t a single mark on the list from the 1990s. In fact there are no marks from any year from 1982 through 2004 (although it’s possible we are missing some marks).

(An aside – I read an interview with Carl Lewis where he said he triple jumped 46 feet as a sophomore at Kennedy in the spring of 1977 but I can’t find any record of that. The best mark I can find from him from that year is 44-8 and the best overall mark I found from him was 45-1. Anybody got anything on that?)
