Nick Mirabelli on Saturday tries to throw his way to this summer’s 2019 Pan Am Under-20 Championships at the USATF Under-20 Championships in Florida.
Mirabelli, a Rancocas Valley graduate who just finished his freshman year at Texas A&M, threw 236-6 this year. He set the New Jersey state record of 227-10 when he won the Meet of Champions last spring.
Mirabelli is the No. 2 seed in the nine-man field that will compete starting at 6:10 p.m. at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla.
The top seed is Tzuriel Pedigo, who threw 234-11 as a prep last spring at Parkview Baptist High School in Louisiana and placed second in world juniors. He has a best throw of 239-9 this spring competing unattached at the Texas Relays in Austin (finishing just ahead of Mirabelli).
Nobody else in the field has thrown over 225 feet.
