Lenape’s Shelby Whetstone runs S.J. #1 800 with huge win at Rowan Invitational!!!!!

Lenape senior Shelby Whetstone moved into the No. 1 spot on the 2019 South Jersey 800-meter run list Friday night when she won the two-lapper at the Rowan Invitational in a personal-best 2:14.09.

Whetstone lowered her PR from 2:14.92 at states last year. Her time is fastest at the Rowan Open since Bridget Flynn of Ocean City ran 2:13.95 in the 2014 race.

Millville senior Raelynne Miller led Whetstone, Highland senior Nia Holden and Haddonfield sophomore Lindsay Colflesh through 400 meters, with Miller coming through in 65.3, Whetstone in 65.6 and Colflesh and Holden in 65.9.

But Whetstone closed strong, with a 68.6 second lap to win by 15 meters over Holden, who ran 2:16.87. Colflesh (2:17.72) and Paulsboro soph Amirah Sharpe (2:19.92) were also under 2:20, and Haddonfield soph Olivia Stoner and Miller both ran 2:20 and change in a very fast race.

Whetstone’s time is No. 3 in New Jersey this year behind Victoria Vanriele of Governor Livingston High in Berkeley Heights, who ran 2:09.36 at Mt. SAC, and Leena Morant of Union Catholic in Scotch Plains, who ran 2:11.88 at Arcadia. Vanriele and Morant went 1-2 last spring in the Meet of Champions 800.

The last Lenape girl to win the 800 at the Rowan Invite was Miya Johnson in 2005.

Whetstone’s time is No. 9 in Burlington County history and No. 5 in Lenape history. Lenape has had seven girls run under 2:15 indoors or out.
