Delsea’s Bill Goldsborough continues record-setting freshman year at Georgian Court!!!!!

Delsea’s Bill Goldsborough continues to excel as a freshman at Georgian Court in Lakewood, and on Saturday placed second in the discus at the Rider Invitational with a near-PR 158-0.

Goldsborough also threw 47-6 1/2 for fifth in the shot and 138-10 for seventh in the hammer throw, which he just took up this spring.

Goldsborough is versatile, but his best event so far has been the shot put, and he’s got a 54-10 to his credit this spring with the 16-pound ball, a mark he threw in a meet at Stockton University in Galloway last month. That broke the school record of 53-4 1/2, set in 2017 by Joseph Kaas at the 2016 CACC Championships in Lakewood.

That makes him No. 33 overall in NCAA Division 2 and the No. 3 freshman. It’s an NCAA Division 2 championships provisional qualifier and the No. 2 throw in the entire NCAA Division 2 East Region, behind only a 57-11 3/4 by Rickssen Opont of St. Thomas Aquinas University in Sparkhill, N.Y.

Goldsborough is No. 1 in the discus in the East Region with a 161-6 from a meet at Monmouth Regional in West Long Branch late last month, and he’s the No. 3 freshman nationally but not far off the top two — Nathan Swadley of Missouri S&T [164-4] of Rolla, Mo., and Konner Swenson of Pittsburg (Kan.) State [163-11].

Goldsborough is only half a foot off the school discus record of 162-0 1/2, set in 2017 by Kaas at a meet at Stockton.

At Delsea, Goldsborough threw 58-0 1/2 and 168-1 with the high school implements. He was a multiple state medalist and Meet of Champions runner-up last winter in the shot behind Christopher Licata of Gill St. Bernard’s.

Absegami soph Diamond McLaughlin records massive 400 breakthrough, wins Lenape Invite with N.J. #2 time!!!!!

Absegami sophomore Diamond McLaughlin recorded quite a 400 PR Saturday, winning the one-lapper at the Lenape Invitational with a time of 57.63.

McLaughlin dipped under 60 once last year, running 59.87 for fifth at the Group 3 sectionals at Delsea. Indoors, she ran 1:01.84 but didn’t place at sectionals.

But now she’s No. 1 in South Jersey and No. 2 in New Jersey, behind only indoor Meet of Champions winner Kaira Brown of Kent Play, who ran 55.38 at the Bullis Invitational in Potomac, Md., this past weekend.

McLaughlin edged Cherry Hill East senior Maya Drayton, who placed second in 58.11. It looks like she was less than a second off the Atlantic County sophomore record of 56.78, set in 2007 by Nijgia Snapp of Oakcrest at sectionals.

She missed the meet record of 57.22 by less than half a second. That was set in 2017 by Alexis Crosby of Cheltenham (Pa.) High, who is now running for Syracuse.

Mooers, Addlesberger, Gardner lead a parade of S.J. throwers who took over the Metropolitan Championships!!!!!

South Jersey throwers went wild at the Metropolitan Track Championships Saturday at Rutgers.

Let’s take a look!

—> Rutgers freshman Alexa Gardner of Hammonton PR’d in the javelin, placing second with a throw of 146-3. She placed second, behind sophomore Kathryn Campbell, who won with a 194-4. Gardner had a high school PR of 142-1 from last year’s state Group 3 meet at Northern Burlington. She got close to that at the Florida Relays, where she threw 141-8, before recording two PRs on Saturday on her two final throws — 145-6 and 146-3. She’s now ranked No. 10 in the Big 10, and she’s the No. 2 freshman in the conference, behind only Minnesota’s Haley Poole, who threw 150-4 in a meet last weekend in Tucson.

—> Rutgers senior Chris Mirabelli from Holy Cross won the javelin by more than 10 feet with a 218-7. Mirabelli only got two legal marks – a 218-6 and a 218-6. He has a PR of 251-6.

–> Schalick graduate Zyra Thomas, a Rutgers freshman,  threw a collegiate-best 43-0 1/2 to place fourth in the women’s shot put. Thomas, the national indoor high school champ at 47-5 3/4 last winter.  Thomas also placed eighth in the discus with a 121-10.

—> Najeaya Singleton of St. John’s, a freshman from Vineland, was seventh in the shot put with a 42-0 on her final throw. That’s only three-quarters of an inch off her college PR of 42-3/4 set last month. Singleton, who missed the entire 2018 high school season with an injury, had a high school PR of 46-1 1/2  from 2017 indoor states and an outdoor PR of 44-9 3/4  from 2017 Meet of Champs.

—> Cinnaminson grad Ryan Addlesberger of Manhattan won the shot put with a 56-11 1/4, an outdoor PR. He does have a 58-0 from indoor Mets. He’s got the No. 2 throw in the Metro-Atlantic Conference, behind only Monmouth’s Corey Murphy, who threw 62-10 1/2 at a meet at Princeton last weekend.

—> Another Cinnaminson graduate, Rutgers freshman Kamron Kobolak, was fourth in that shot put competition with a 52-2 3/4, a personal-best with the 16-pound shot. Kobolak had a 51-11 3/4 indoors in Boston. His outdoor PR was 50-2 last month in Tampa. He’s now the No. 6 freshman in the shot in the Big 10.

—> Kobolak also threw a college PR in the discus, placing fifth with a 152-8. Kobolak was the Meet of Champions discus champ last spring and was second in the shot.

—> John Mooers, a senior out of Middle Township, won the discus with a 173-2 on his final throw. He threw a personal-best 178-4 earlier this year in a meet at Princeton. Mooers has progressed every year at Rutgers — from 152-8 as a freshman to 165-6 as a sophomore to 176-2 last year and now 178-4.

Haddon Heights boys run #3 NJ shuttle hurdles at Moorestown Invite!!!!!

Haddon Heights put together the fastest shuttle hurdles performance by a Camden County school in 10 years Saturday, running 1:01.85 at the 13th annual Moorestown Relays.

That’s No. 3 in the state so far this year, behind only Rahway’s 1:01.13 at the East Brunswick Invitational on Saturday and St. Benedict’s 1:01.54 at the Lawrenceville relay meet last weekend.

It’s the fastest by a South Jersey Group 2 school since Oakcrest ran 58.54 in 2012 and the fastest by a Camden County school since Camden (59.70) and Wilson (1:00.21) ran faster in 2008.

No individual names are listed on the Moorestown Relays results. If you know who ran for Heights please leave it in the comments section.

Most likely, Cameron Kee anchored Heights’ team. He was a state medalist in the 110 highs last spring and has already run 55.22 for the 400 intermediates this spring.

Moorestown Invitational records are incomplete, but Heights’ time is fastest at the meet since Oakcrest ran 1:00.14 in the large-school division in 2012. It may be a small-school record. The fastest I could find was Willingboro’s 1:02.85 in 2014, but results from 2006 through 2009 aren’t available.

Haddonfield’s Gess, Spellmeyer run S.J. #1 and #2 800’s at Bensalem – huge PR for Spellmeyer!!!

Haddonfield seniors Derek Gess and Ethan Spellmeyer made the trip over to Bucks County to run a fast 800, and both came back to New Jersey with the two fastest times in South Jersey this year.

Gess placed second in 1:55.13 and Spellmeyer ran a huge PR of 1:55.74 for third at the Bensalem Invitational. Dylan Servis of Twin Valley High School, located south of Reading in Elverson, Berks County, won the race with a 1:54.82, a three-second PR of his own.

Gess’s PR is 1:54.37 from second place at the state Group 2 meet last spring at Central Regional in Bayville. Spellmeyer lowered his PR more than three seconds from the 1:58.86 he ran to win the Camden County title at Haddon Township last May.

Gess and Spellmeyer rank No. 2 and 3 in New Jersey behind only indoor Meet of Champions winner Elijah Brown of Union Catholic, who ran 1:53.94 at the Arcadia Invitational in California last weekend.

Another Haddonfield half-miler, Andrew Gostovich, placed fifth in the race in a PR 2:00.21. His previous PR was 2:01.29 from sectionals last spring.

Sincere Rhea runs U.S. #5 in 110 highs at Virginia showdown with Andre Turay!!!!!

Andre Turay of Bullis School in Potomac, Md., and Sincere Rhea of St. Augustine in Richland, two of the top hurdlers in the country, squared off Saturday in Maryland, and the duo produced two of the fastest times in the country.

The two crossed the finish line almost simultaneously, but when the official results were announced Turay, third at outdoor nationals last spring, had finished 1-100th of a second ahead of Rhea.

Turay ran 13.80 and Rhea 13.81, the No. 4 and No. 5 times in the U.S. this year according to the MileSplit USA rankings.

Turay has a PR of 13.73 from the prelims of New Balance nationals last year. Rhea has a PR of 13.74 from last year’s Meet of Champions.

Kingsway 10:25, Camden Catholic 10:26, Rancocas Valley 10:33 in SMOKING HOT Holmdel distance medley!!!!!

It was a historic evening Thursday night for South Jersey distance medley teams at Bob Roggy Stadium in Holmdel.

Kingsway ran 10:25.44, Camden Catholic 10:26.90 and Rancocas Valley 10:33.63 at the Holmdel Twilight Series Penn Relays Qualifier, and although I still have some research to do it appears that it’s the first time ever that three South Jersey schools have run sub-10:35 in the same race.

Kingsway and Camden Catholic finished first and second, withWest Morris Central third in 10:31.49 and R.V. fourth. They’re the four-fastest times in New Jersey this year and No. 16, 18, 29 and 35 in the U.S., according to the MileSplit database.

Kingsway’s time is No. 19 in South Jersey history and third-fastest in Gloucester County history, behind two Washington Township times — 10:10.74 in 2000 and 10:19.11 in 2009.

Camden Catholic’s time is No. 22 in South Jersey history and a school record, and R.V.’s time is the Red Devils’ third-best ever, behind a 10:20.92 in 2015 and a 10:32.85 in 2016.

Penn Relays DMR and 3,200-meter relay high school acceptances will be announced Monday. Schools need to run 10:35 to be considered, but it generally takes a time considerably faster to be among the approximately 15 teams accepted into the one-race Championship of America final.

Camden Catholic’s splits: 3:13 for Richard Castañeda, 55 for Ray Derman, 1:59 for Denny Kelly and a 4:18 anchor for Matt Coffee.

If anybody has splits for Kingsway or Rancocas Valley, please post them in the comments section!

Thanks!

A.C.’s Claudine Smith smashes S.J. triple jump record, moves into all-time 100HH top 10 at Jamaican CARIFTA Trials!!!!!

Claudine Smith had a remarkable weekend competing at the Jamaican CARIFTA Trials in Kingston.

Smith, an Atlantic City senior, PR’d in both the high hurdles and triple jump and also competed in the long jump.

I wish I could tell you whether she made the Jamaican team for the CARIFTA Championships later this month, but I couldn’t find anything anywhere that explained how the national Under-20 is selected.

In any case, let’s take a look at Smith’s incredible weekend:

TRIPLE JUMP: Smith jumped 41-6 1/4, shattering the South Jersey record of 40-10 1/4 that Northern Burlington’s Ashley Edwards set at the 2014 New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

Smith’s previous PR was a 40-1 1/2, which she did twice – when she won the Rowan Open last May and then again when she placed fifth at indoor nationals last month.

Smith’s mark is No. 2 in the U.S. so far this spring, according to the MileSplit USA rankings, behind only Jasmine Moore of Mansfield Lake Ridge High in Mansfield, Texas, who went 43-5 at the Texas Relays in Austin.

Her mark is No. 3 in state history indoor or out, behind only Olympian and American record holder Keturah Orji of Mount Olive, who went 44-11 in the summer of 2013 at the IAAF World Youth Championships, and Charlene Cummings, who jumped 42-2 3/4 for Englewood in 1998.

Here’s the all-time state top-10:

40-6 … Mahogany Jenkins [Watchung Hills], 2018
40-6 … Jordan Fields [Columbia], 2016

If you add indoor marks, Stephanie McIntyre of South Brunswick moves into the No. 4 spot at 40-11 from the 2007 Easterns.

Smith placed second in the triple jump in Kingston, behind only Lotavia Brown, who jumped 42-4 1/2.

100-METER HURDLES: Smith placed fourth in the high hurdles in 14.04 after a 14.66 in the trials. That’s No. 9 in South Jersey history. Her previous 100 highs PR was 14.26 in the prelims of the state Group 4 meet last spring.

LONG JUMP: Smith jumped 17-0 1/4 for eighth. She has a PR of 18-7 from sectionals last spring at Egg Harbor and actually has a 17-1 to her credit this spring from a Cape Atlantic League batch meet last week on her home track.

For the record, JAAA is the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association, and CARIFTA is the Caribbean Free Trade Association.

The CARIFTA Games is an annual Olympic-style track championship meet dating back to 1972 featuring athletes from 26 Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Barbados, Bermuda, etc.

Competition is held for boys and girls in two age categories – under 17 and under 20.

Schalick’s Samuel Gerstenbacher of Elizabethtown runs #8 steeplechase in NCAA Division 3!!!

Samuel Gerstenbacher made his 2019 steeplechase debut at the Sam Howell Invite at Princeton over the weekend and ran a near-PR 9:16.15 for eighth place in a field of Division 1 and post-collegiate runners.

That’s less than five seconds off his PR and school record of 9:11.20, set at a last-chance meet at Swarthmore last May.

Gerstenbacher, a junior at Elizbethtown from Schalick, is No. 9 in NCAA Division 3 and tops in the Landmark Conference. He’s also No. 1 in the Landmark in the 5,000 with a 15:30.64 in a home meet last month.
