Javon Sanders didn’t waste any time destroying his intermediate hurdles PR.
Sanders, a junior at Deptford, ran 56.77 for the 400 intermediates at the Rebel Relays Saturday at Howell High School.
Sanders’ previous PR was a 59.97 at last year’s South Jersey Invitational at Delsea. That was the only time he was under a minute last year.
Indoors, Sanders focused on the high hurdles and was third at Group 3 states at Toms River in 7.79 and had a PR of 7.68 from a SJTCA meet on the same track.
But his 56.77 puts him in an entirely new category. The only faster Deptford intermediate hurdler we found who ran faster as a junior is Shaquille Dixon, who ran 55.97 as a junior in 2014 — but he didn’t break 57 seconds until sectionals. Dixon went on to place second at states in 54.03 as a senior.
Sanders’ 56.77 is the fastest time in New Jersey after the first weekend of competition this spring.
This past winter, Sanders ran the third leg on Deptford’s 800-meter relay team, which ran 1:29.92 at the Ocean Breeze Invitational to tie the Gloucester County record.
