Helene Usher ran 21:15 over 6,000 meters at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va., and placed 17th out of nearly 150 runners at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday.

Usher, a Haddonfield graduate and La Salle sophomore, was the Explorers’ No. 2 runner. Teammate Gwenno Goode, a sophomore from Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg medium comprehensive school in Barry, Wales, won the race in 20:10.4.

La Salle placed 4th with 13 points. Loyola scored 36, with U. Mass. [113] and George Mason [121] 2nd and 3rd.

Usher, who’s run 17:055.55 for 5,000 meters on the track, ran 17:42 5K pace for 6,000 meters.

She ran within about 10 seconds off her lifetime all-course best of 21:05 from the Paul Short Run on Lehigh’s south campus in Bethlehem and Lower Saucon Township.

La Salle, ranked 11th in the NCAA Division 1 Mid-Atlantic Region, races in the Mid-Atlantic Regional race a week from Saturday on Penn State’s Blue and White course in State College, Pa.

Top South Jersey finisher in the men’s race was St. Joe’s freshman Jack Bolling from Haddon Heights, 43rd in 25:05 and the 7th freshman overall. St. Joe’s senior Dawson Baptiste from Delsea finished six yards back in 51st.

Holmdel was first used for states in 1976, but the first two years a 3-mile course was used. The 5K course has been in use since 1978.

Three years ago, the Cherokee girls won a very tight Meet of Champions – four teams within 32 points – and averaged 19:23.40 on the challenging Holmdel County Park course.

That broke the South Jersey course record of 19:31 set by Haddonfield in 2020 at the Holmdel Invitational, a meet arranged to replace the Meet of Champions after states and the MoC were both cancelled because of COVID.

Cherokee’s top-5 that day consisted of Nicole Clifford [11th in 18:43], Kelsey Niglio [35th in 19:22], Kerry O’Day [38th in 19:24], Olivia Parkinson [44th in 19:30] and Megan Niglio [60th in 19:58].

Cherokee beat 2nd-place Ridgewood 117-126, with the big gap coming between the two teams’ 4th runners. Parkinson finished 13 places ahead of Ridgewood’s 4th, and that was the difference.

With states and the Meet of Champions coming up the next two Saturdays, it’s time for our all-time South Jersey single-race performance list. I don’t know what’s going to happen at states or Meet of Champions, but I do know this list is going to undergo some major changes very soon.

Three years ago, Cherokee won a very tight Meet of Champions – four teams within 32 points – and averaged 19:23.40 on the challenging Holmdel County Park course.

That broke the South Jersey course record of 19:31 set by Haddonfield in 2020 at the Holmdel Invitational, a meet arranged to replace the Meet of Champions after states and the MoC were both cancelled because of COVID.

Cherokee’s top-5 that day included Nicole Clifford [11th in 18:43], Kelsey Niglio [35th in 19:22], Kerry O’Day [38th in 19:24], Olivia Parkinson [44th in 19:30] and Megan Niglio [60th in 19:58].

Cherokee beat 2nd-place Ridgewood 117-126, with the big gap coming between the two teams’ 4th runners. Parkinson finished 13 places ahead of Ridgewood’s 4th, and that was the difference.

With states and the Meet of Champions coming up the next two Saturdays, it’s time for our all-time South Jersey single-race performance list. I don’t know what’s going to happen at states or Meet of Champions, but I do know this list is going to undergo some major changes very soon.

It’s been 23 years since Mainland Regional took over Holmdel County Park and outraced CBA to win the Meet of Champions title.

Greg Hughes placed 2nd in 15:39, Jimmy Wyner 16:06, Joe Masters 18th in 16:22, Spenser Popeson 24th in 16:29 and Alex Palmentieri 66th in 17:02. For team scoring purposes, they went 1-8-10-13-36 and edged CBA 68-74.

After four runners, Mainland led 32-48, so Palmentieri’s sole purpose was to finish fewer than 15 spots behind CBA’s 5th runner, and he finished 10 spots behind him, locking up the win for the Mustangs.

Mainland averaged 16:19.12 per runner that day back in 2023 and here we are more than two decades later and despite faster shoes, a faster course and improved training methods, that 16:19.12 average still stands as the South Jersey single-race Holmdel County Park course record.

Haddonfield came very close with its 16:19.68 at the 2010 Meet of Champions but Mainland has stood up to every challenge.

Some very good teams will take aim at that 16:19.12 Saturday at states and a week from Saturday at the Meet of Champions. But for now, here’s the all-time South Jersey Holmdel single-race performance list. Corrections and additions are welcome!

Kingsway’s Kylie Anicic, in her first year of post-collegiate running, ran the fastest road 10-miler ever by a South Jersey woman Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Anicic, who finished her record-setting career at Edinboro this past spring, ran 57:03 and placed 6th out of more than 1,600 runners at the EQT Pittsburgh 10-Miler.

That’s 15 seconds faster than Cherokee graduate Megan Lacy ran at the USATF 10-Mile Championships in Minneapolis on Oct. 6, 2019.

This was Anicic’s 3rd race this fall. She ran 1:14.54 for 20K in New Haven on Sept. 2 and a 35:19 road 10K in Northport, N.Y., in late September.

At Edinboro, Anicic had track PRs of 4:30.52 for 1,500 meters, 9:27.55 for 3,000 meters, 16:25.97 for 5,000 and 33:25.55 for 10,000.

Molly Grabill, a six-time All-America at Oregon, won the race in 53:48. Grabill has a New Jersey connection: Her partner is Olympic triathlete Morgan Pearson from Harding Township and Delbarton High School. Pearson is a two-time silver medalist in the triathlon mixed relay.

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time New Jersey road 10-miler list. Note that Olympian Marielle Hall of Haddonfield and Erika Kemp of Rancocas Valley, the 2021 USATF 20K road champion, never ran a road 10-miler from all available records.

MIT junior Jacob Cobb of West Deptford placed 6th in the NEWMAC Championships Saturday in Wellesley, Mass., helping the Engineers easily win the team title.

Cobb ran a lifetime all-course best 25:08 over 8,000 meters at Nehoiden Golf Club and was MIT’s 3rd runner. Massachusets Institute of Technology won its 26th straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championship, 25-61, over Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Cobb’s previous best for a cross country 8K was a 25:33 at Division 3 Pre-Nationals last month in Terre Haute, Ind.

Last spring in Williamstown, Mass., Cobb ran a 9:00.17 steeplechase, shattering the MIT school record.

MIT is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division 3 East Region behind Tufts of Medford, Mass., and 22nd nationally.

MIT races on Nov. 16 at the East Regional Championships at Hopkinton (N.H.) State Fairgrounds.

Earlier today we posted the all-time Holmdel South Jersey boys performance list, and as promised here’s the girls list.

The legendary Michelle Rowen held the South Jersey record over the historic Holmdel County Park 5K course for 28 years with her 17:40 at the 1982 Meet of Champions, where she finished 150 meters ahead of rival Janet Smith of North Edison.

Megan Venables of Highland broke it at the 2010 state Group 3 meet, which she won by 500 meters over Mackenzie Barry of West Morris Mendham.

Only six South Jersey girls have run sub-18 at Holmdel, most recently Mainland Regional’s Alyssa Aldridge at the 2016 Meet of Champions, which she won in 17:55.

States are Saturday and Meet of Champions the following Saturday and the way the season is going we’re going to see some major changes at the top of this list.

With states coming up on Saturday, it’s time to start posting some of our all-time Holmdel County Park performance lists.

Later this week we’ll have the South Jersey all-time single-race team boys and girls lists, all-time composite lists and all-time South Jersey top-5 placers. But we’ll start with the all-time South Jersey boys performance list.

At the 1988 state Parochial A meet, Paul VI’s Jason DiJoseph ran 15:16.2, beating CBA’s John Coyle by 150 meters and leading PVI to a 27-48 win over CBA for the team title.

DiJoseph that day 36 years ago broke the previous course record of 15:35.1 set by North Hunterdon’s Andy Martin at the 1984 state Group 3 meet.

DiJoseph’s course record stood for 18 years, until Craig Forys of Colts Neck ran 15:15.2 in 2006. Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s Prep has held the record since 2011 with his 14:53 at Shore Coaches [St. Benedict’s is not a member of the NJSIAA so Chez couldn’t run at states or Meet of Champs].

The closest any South Jersey runner has gotten to DiJoseph’s 15:16 is a 15:29 by Kevin Antczak of Mainland Regional when he placed 2nd to Allentown’s Liam Murphy at the 2019 Meet of Champions.

Oh by the way, the list is updated through Shore Coaches but the only sub-16:30 at this year’s race by a South Jersey runner was Jack Tindall’s 15:54 freshman course record. I have a hunch we’ll have a lot more guys going sub-16:30 Saturday.

Sophomore Allyson Wernik of Washington Township and senior Anna Sasse of Williamstown placed 2nd and 4th and the Rowan women cruised to their first New Jersey Athletic Conference title since 2019 Saturday morning in Ewing.

Wernik ran 22:19 over 6,000 meters at the Green Lane Fields and Sasse ran 22:35, and the Profs went 1-2-4-5-18 to top The College of New Jersey 30-56, with Stockton [73] and Ramapo [82] also in double figures.

Rowan won three straight conference titles from 1992 through 1994 – the first as Glassboro State, the next two as Rowan University – and also won in 2011, 2012 and 2019.

For Rowan, senior Mia Guerra of Hasbrouck Heights ran 22:10 to win the race, with junior Gabriella Pagano of Pope John XXIII 5th in 22:52 and sophomore Shannon Stakelbeck of Toms River East 18th in 23:52.

Previous Glassboro / Rowan individual winners at the conference meet are Sharon Sittineri of Wildwood in 1992, Suzanne Mergner of Matawan in 1993 and 1994, Michelle Reo of Brick Township in 1995, Jena Peacock of Our Lady of Mercy in 2009 and 2010, Vanessa Wright of Haddonfield in 2011, Danielle Czohla of High Point Regional in 2012, Megan Borz from Buena in 2013, Christin Bettis of Hammonton in 2014 and Diane Ferraro from South Plainfield in 2019.

Megan O’Leary from Cherokee won the 2006 title for TCNJ and Natalie Cooper of Moorestown won in 2016, 2017 and 2018 for TCNJ.

Rowan is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division 3 Metro Region. Swarthmore is 2nd and TCNJ and Stockton are 3rd and 4th.

The Profs will race in the NCAA Division 3 Metro Region Championships on Nov. 16 at Stockton University in Galloway Township.

TCNJ’s No. 2 finisher was junior Savannah Hodgens from Mainland Regional, who placed 9th in 23:17. Stockton’s 3rd runner was grad student Amanda McNally of Seneca, who placed 13th in 23:35.
