St. Augustine senior Julian Onesti made a huge jump this indoor season and goes into outdoor track as the fastest Atlantic County sprinter ever.

Onesti quietly had a terrific season, culminating in a 4th-place finish at the Meet of Champions Sunday at Ocean Breeze and lowering his PR from 6.51 to 6.42, which broke the Atlantic County record.

Onesti PR’d with a 6.51 back in January at the Ott Center, which left him 5-100ths of a second off the county record of 6.46, set by Oakcrest’s Darnell Charles when he won the 2012 Meet of Champions at the Bubble.

Despite coming close to Charles’ record several times, Onesti never quite got his 55 time down to 6.46.

Until Sunday.

In the prelims of the dash at Ocean Breeze, Onesti ran a PR 6.47, which put him 1-100th of a second off Charles’ county record. Then he smashed it with a 6.42 in the final, good for 4th place and fastest in the race by a South Jersey sprinter.

He also broke the Cape-Atlantic Conference record of 6.45, set at the 2008 Meet of Champions at the Bubble by Millville’s Chris Church.

The previous St. Augustine school record was 6.52, set by national scholastic hurdles champ Sincere Rhea at the 2019 Meet of Champions, also in Toms River.

Delsea senior Jonathan Harris on Tuesday became the third Gloucester County thrower in four years to win the Easterns shot put title.

In 2022, Delsea’s Jason Nwosu won with a 61-5 throw, and last year Glassboro’s Damere Lassiter won with a 60-1. Harris on Tuesday at the Armory won the 89^th annual meet with a 59-3.

He won by four inches over Sean Wilton of Princeton.

Harris opened with a 56-7 ½ and after a foul hit his 59-3 on his 3^rd attempt. He finished with a 57-2 ½ and a 58-5 before closing with a foul.

Before Nwosu, Lassiter and Harris, the only South Jersey athletes to win the Easterns shot put were Willingboro’s Ell Ash in 2004 [60-0 ½] and Bridgeton’s Braheme Days Jr. [70-8 in 2012, 67-8 in 2013].

In addition to Nwosu and Harris, other Delsea winners at Easterns are Sultan Tucker in the hurdles in 1995 and 1996, Tristan Wilson in the triple jump in 2014, Ameer Banks in the high jump in 2015 and Khaliel Burnett in the triple jump in 2018.

Harris is No. 1 in New Jersey this year with his 65-6 PR, No. 2 in South Jersey history indoors or out, behind Days’ 70-8, and No. 9 in state history indoors.

Lumberton’s Greg Foster and Washington Township’s Ajani Dwyer are on their way to the NCAA Division 1 track championships later this month in Virginia Beach.

Foster, a senior at Princeton who graduated from Lawrenceville School, qualified in the long jump, and Dwyer in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

Only 16 athletes qualify in each individual event, and Foster ranks 14th in the long jump in Division 1 with a 25-8 ¼. The cutoff in the long jump was 25-7 ¾

Foster hit that 25-8 ¼ on his final attempt in a Princeton-Navy dual meet in Annapolis in January, which was his first meet in 11 months following foot surgery.

Foster qualified for NCAAs in 2023 and placed 15th with a best jump of 24-7 ¾. He also qualified for outdoor NCAA East Regionals in 2023 but didn’t advance.

Foster’s PR is 26-1 ¾ from 2023 Heps at Franklin Field. His indoor PR is 25-10 ¾ from a meet in January 2023 in Annapolis, Md.

Foster also has PRs of 7.89 in the 60-meter hurdles, 14.23 in the 110-meter hurdles and 50-7 ½ in the triple jump.

Dwyer is the No. 6 seed in the 60 with his 6.54 in the trials of the U.S. Championships at the Armory in New York, and he’s the No. 14 seed in the 200 with a 20.65 at a meet in January at the Ott Center in West Philly.

Dwyer is among 17 men who have qualified in multiple individual events. He’s one of only three sprinters who qualified in the 60 and the 200. The others are Max Thomas of USC and Mason Lawyer of Washington State.

The NCAA Division 1 Track Championships are scheduled for March 14-15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The long jump is at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 14. The 60 trials are at 7:18 p.m. Friday, with the final at 6:10 p.m. Saturday. The 200 trials are at 8:32 p.m. that Friday with the final following at 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

Winslow junior Leeya Joseph turned in a breakthrough long jump performance Tuesday night at the 89th annual Easterns at the Armory.

Joseph had a monster series, PR’d three times, had the four-best jumps of her life and placed 2nd with a best jump of 18-8 ½. Nya Thomas of North Rockland High in Thiells, N.Y., Rockland County, won the event with an 18-11 ¾.

The average of Joseph’s six jumps Tuesday was higher than her previous PR.

Joseph came into the meet with a lifetime-best 17-7 ¼ from her 2nd-place finish last spring at South Jersey Group 2 sectionals at Delsea as a sophomore at Sterling. Her previous-best indoor jump was a 16-3 at the Bishop Loughlin Games at Ocean Breeze in December.

Her 18-8 ¾ is No. 9 in South Jersey history and No. 2 in New Jersey this year behind Morgan Holley of Union Catholic, who jumped 19-2 in January at Ocean Breeze. She won the Meet of Champions on Sunday at 18-10 ¼ but didn’t compete at Easterns.

Winslow has had four girls jump 18-8 or better indoors. The rest of South Jersey combined has had five.

Joseph opened with jumps of 17-3, 17-5 ½ and a PR 17-10 in the trials, then jumped a PR 18-0 ¾, another 17-10 before popping the 18-8 ½ on her final attempt, moving from 3rd into 2nd.

She averaged 17-0 ¼ on her six jumps, good enough to place 5th overall.Joseph’s 18-8 1/2 is 6th-best by a South Jersey girl in Easterns history. The first girls meet was held in 1980.

Eastern graduate Jewel Ash, a senior at Fresno State, had a monster weekend at the Mountain West Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center, running PRs of 8.40 in the 60-meter hurdles and 53.95 for 400 meters.

She now ranks 3rd in program history in the hurdles and 3rd in the 400. Her 400 time is 20 on the all-time South Jersey alumni list and her 8.40 is No. 11. The only other woman on both lists is Paul VI graduate Aliya Garozzo, now a senior at Duke.

Ash ran 8.40 in the hurdles trials, then placed 3rd in the final with an 8.44. She ran 54.46 in the 400 semis before taking 8th in the final with her 53.95.

Her PRs going into the weekend were 8.59 in the highs just two weeks earlier in a meet at the same facility and 54.04 at the 2022 Raleigh Relays as a sophomore at Charleston Southern.

Ash’s best event is the intermediate hurdles. She ran 57.16 when she won the 2022 Big South Conference meet in High Point, N.C. That’s the 5th-fastest ever by a South Jersey woman.

Ash’s sister Jailya is a senior at Uconn and set a school record of 13.32 over the 100-meter highs in April in Storrs. She hasn’t competed this indoor season.

Ty Blackman became the first Glassboro runner to win an Easterns title in 60 years Tuesday when he won the mile at the 89th annual Eastern States Championships at the Armory.

The last Glassboro runner to win at Easterns was George Hartsfield, who won the 60-yard dash in 1965 in a hand-timed 6.3 in a meet that was then known as the National Interscholastic Championships and held at Madison Square Garden.

Blackman was in 5th when he came through in 2:10.60, but he took the lead on the 6th lap and closed in 1:35.86 for his final three laps, 63.03 for his final quarter-mile and 30.91 for his final 220. He crossed the line in 4:19.56, finishing 12 meters clear of 2nd-place Nicolas Katsoulis of Manhassat, N.Y.

His 4:19.56 converts to 4:18.05 for 1,600 meters.

Blackman is the first South Jersey runner to win the Easterns mile in 12 years, since Clearview’s Bill Dolan won the 2013 race in 4:21.51.

Blackman just ran his lifetime best of 4:17.46 when he placed 13th in a very fast Meet of Champions across town at Ocean Breeze on Sunday. His PR before January was 4:28.97 outdoors.

In addition to Hartsfield and Blackman, Glassboro’s Damere Lassiter won the shot put at Easterns last year.

About seven mimutes after Winslow’s Jasmine Jackson won the hurdles at the 89th annual Eastern States Championships at the Armory, her teammate, junior Olivia Okaro, won the 55-meter dash.

Okaro dropped her PR from 7.14 from the prelims at the Meet of Champions two days ago at Ocean Breeze to 7.07 and ran away from Immaculate Heart Academy senior Piper Portacio, who placed 2nd in 7.17. Willingboro senior Nester Wea, who ran 7.17 in the semis, finished 3rd in 7.20.

Okaro is the 2nd Winslow sprinter to win the Easterns 55-meter dash, joining Torie Robinson, who won the 2014 race in 7.00.

Okaro ran 7.19 in the trials, then PR’d with 7.13 in the semis to lead all qualifiers into the final.

The Cherokee girls won the 3,200-meter relay at the 89^th annaul Easterns Tuesday night at the Armory and recorded a likely Penn Relays qualifier.

Junior Alyssa Suriano, Megan Niglio, Sofia Recinto and Maddie Meder ran 9:21.64 and won by 50 meters over Massapequa, N.Y. Suriano led off in 2:20.06, Niglio split 2:19.18, Recinto ran 2:23.93 and Meder anchored in 2:18.47.

This is the 2^nd year in a row Cherokee has recorded a win at Easterns. The Lady Chiefs won the distance medley last year in 12:16.72. The only other wins from the Cherokee girls program at Easterns have come from Monica Olkowski in the 1,000-yard run at Jadwin in 1990 and Megan Lacy in the mile in 2012.

Previous South Jersey 4-by-8 winners at Easterns are Buena in 1999, Woodrow Wilson in 2002, Lenape in 2008 and 2012 and Haddonfield in 2017. Cherokee’s time is fastest at Easterns since Ridge ran 9:15.07 in 2019.

Cherokee’s time is 12^th-fastest in South Jersey history and 3^rd-fastest by a New Jersey school this yaer, behind that Scotch Plains-based all-star team [8:58.48] and Manalapan [9:14.71].

Winslow Township’s Jasmine Jackson raced to a victory in the 55-meter hurdles Tuesday evening at the 89th annual Eastern States Championships at the Armory and demolished the state freshmn record along the way.

Jackson lowered her PR from 8.09 to 8.05 in the semifinals and then blasted a 7.97 in the final.

Her time is 5th-fastest in South Jersey history and 14th-fastest in state history. She broke the state freshman record of 8.02 set by Union Catholic’s Taylor Cox at 2022 Armory Nationals. It’s 8th-fastest all-time U.S. by a freshman, according to the MileSplit database.

Jackson ran away from the field, winning by two meters over Ramapo’s Sandra Vitolo, who placed 2nd in 8.25. Her time is 14th-fastest in the U.S. this year and makes her the No. 14 performer in meet history.

The only South Jersey girls to ever run faster at Easterns are Pleasantville’s Nia Ali [7.89 in 2006] and Winslow’s Ste’cye McNeil [7.89 in 2012].

She’s the 3rd Winslow girl to win the Easterns hurdles, following McNeil in 2012 nd Cidaea Woods in 2014 and the 4th if you include 1983 winner Zonya Cross from Edgewood, which became Winslow.
