The South Jersey girls course record hasn’t stood as long as Jason DiJoseph’s boys course record, but it has been 15 years now since Megan Venables of Highland ran 17:27.83 at the 2010 state Group 3 Championships. That broke the course record of 17:35.5 set by Janet Smith of J.P. Stevens at the 1983 Meet of Champions.

Venables course record stood until Katelyn Tuohy ran a ridiculous 16:21 at the 2018 Shore Coaches in her only race on the legendary 5,000-meter course. Charlotte Bednar of Lawrenceville School broke Venables’ New Jersey course record when she ran 17:21 at the 2020 Holmdel Invitational, the unofficial replacement for the cancelled Meet of Champions. Angelina Perez of Lakeland, 2nd to Bednar in that race, went on to set a New Jersey course record that still stands of 17:07 at the 2021 state Group 2 race.

South Jersey’s best will be at Holmdel the next two weekends for states this weekend and the Meet of Champions the following week. Seven South Jersey girls have broken 18 at Holmdel and that number could increase this weekend!

It’s been 37 years since Jason DiJoseph ran his legendary 15:16 at the 1988 state Parochial A race to break the Holmdel County Park record of 15:35.1 set at the 1983 state Group 3 race by North Hunterdon’s Andy Martin.

DiJoseph that day not only smashed the course record, he led Paul VI to a 27-48 triumph over Christian Brothers Academy. PVI ran insane that day. Matt Cieslik and Jim Wolfram finished 4th and 5th and ran 16:28 and 16:29, Vince Cieslik placed 7th in 16:36 and Joe Cranston and Pete Dougherty finished 10th and 11th in 16:55 and 16:58, giving PVI six runners in front of CBA’s 5th runner.

Paul VI set a course record with an average time of 16:20.8 by its five scorers and then went on to beat CBA again in the Meet of Champions, this time by a closer 62-65 score.

DiJoseph’s course record stood for 18 years, until Craig Forys of Colts Neck ran 15:15.2 in 2006. Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s Prep has held the record since 2011 with his 14:53 at Shore Coaches

DiJoseph is still 7th-fastest in course history behind Ches, Joe Rosa [14:56 at 2009 MoC], Marco Langan [15:06 at 2021 MoC], Jackson Barna of Ridge [15:13 at 2021 MoC] and James Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North [15:15 at 2009 MoC] and Forys.

The closest anybody from South Jersey has gotten to DiJoseph’s record since 1988 is Kevin Antczak’s 15:29 from the 2019 Meet of Champions, where he placed 2nd to Liam Murphy of Allentown, who ran 15:23. Antczak is 20th-fastest in course history.

Eventually, I’d like to update this list to include what race everybody ran these times. But that’s going to take years. So for now the best we can do is this all-time South Jersey Holmdel list with every performance I could find of 16:30 or faster. Errors and omissions please let me know in the comment section!

Junior Leah Clear from Camden Catholic and sophomore Kadence Dumas from Eastern were both among Delaware’s top four finishers Saturday in the Conference USA Championships in Huntsville, Ala., and both ran all-course PRs.

Clear placed 23rd in 21:08.33 over 6,000 meters at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., and Dumas placed 29th and ran 21:21.36.

Clear’s previous all-course best for a 6K was 21:47.4 last November at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships in State College, and Dumas’s was 22:19.2 last month at the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

So Clear ran about half a minute faster than she ever has on any course and Dumas ran nearly a minute faster.

Delaware placed 4th with 123 points, behind only Liberty [40], New Mexico State [104] and Missouri State [117].

Clear and Dumas are both showing terrific range from middle distance on the track to 3.73 miles on the trails.

Dumas ran 2:07.30 last spring in Lewisburg, Pa., and placed 3rd in the 800 at the Conference USA Championships in Greensboro. Clear ran 4:26.51 and placed 6th in the conference meet at 1,500 meters.

Delaware races Nov. 14 in the NCAA Division 1 Mid-Atlantic Region Championships on Lehigh’s course in Bethlehem and Lower Saucon Township. Delaware is ranked 11th in the region.

West Deptford’s Jacob Cobb helped MIT win its 27th straight NEWMAC Conference title Saturday with a 10th-place finish in Attleboro, Mass.

The NEWMAC is the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.

Cobb, a senior, ran 25:53.8 over 8.000 meters at the Coogan Cross Country Course and was MIT’s 7th finisher. The Engineers won the team title 20-60 over Worcester (Mass.) Polytech Institute.

MIT is ranked 11th in NCAA Division 3 and 2nd behind only Tufts of Medford and Somerville, Mass., in the East Region.

The Engineers race on Nov. 15 at the Division 3 East Regionals in Hopkinton, N.Y. MIT edged Tufts 56-67 to win last year’s regional meet.

Cobb is one of the top steeplechasers in Division 3. He ran 8:53.62 in a meet last May in Williamstown, Mass., which ranked 11th in Division 3, and he went on to compete in the NCAA Division 3 Championships in Geneva,Ohio.

Maddie Dischert, a junior from Brigantine and Atlantic City High School, and Matt McCarron, a sophomore from Cinnaminson, where Rider’s leading runners Saturday at the MAAC Championships in Montgomery, N.Y.

Dischert ran an all-course best 21:35.3 over 6,000 meters at Twin Ponds on the Farm and placed 14th in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference race. Her previous 6K best on any course was a 21:38.4 two weeks ago on Princeton’s Meadows course in West Windsor. Dischert ran 48 seconds faster than last year, when she placed 43rd in this meet on the same course between Manhattan and Albany.

McCarron, a sophomore, was Rider’s top finisher in 17th place with an all-course PR of 24:53.4 over 8,000 meters. He also set his previous best two weeks ago in West Windsor.

Three girls named Riley ran sub-20 at sectionals Saturday and all three are sectional champs.

Audubon’s Riley Fayer ran 18:18.40 at DREAM Park in Logan Township and won South Jersey Group 1, Riley Austin of Haddonfield ran 18:16.93 and won Group 2 and Ocean City sophomore Riley Tolson ran 18:29.18 and won Group 3.

Two other Rileys raced Saturday and both did well. Sterling sophomore Riley Sharpe ran 20:34.52 and placed 14th in Group 2, so she’s also on her way to Holmdel for states along with the entire Sterling team, who placed 3rd. And Paul VI Riley Sheppard placed 14th in the parochial race in 21:34.19. Sharpe just missed her lifetime best for any 5K course by one second and Sheppard ran a 5K PR by over half a minute.

So three of the seven-fastest times recorded in the five races at DREAM Park were turned in by Riley and all five Rileys that competed placed either 1st or 14th. Pretty clear that if you want to improve your XC team, find yourself a few Rileys!

Here’s a look at the 50-fastest boys who raced Saturday at DREAM Park in Logan Township.

Course record holder Jack Tindall with his 15:20.92 at the Olympic Conference meet last month was fastest again Saturday with his second consecutive Group 4 sectional win in 15:29.73 and also the fastest sophomore. Cherokee’s Benjamin Realley was fastest junior at 15:48.14 and Cherry Hill East’s Braeden Sherlock was fastest freshman at 16:50.21.

The biggest jump on the all-time list was made by Haddonfield’s Peter Simpson, who moved up to 28th with his 15:39.10, his winning time in the Group 2 race. His previous DREAM Park best was 16:10.02, which he ran as a Moorestown freshman at Group 3 sectionals. He ran slightly slower the next year as a sophomore [16:11.51] and didn’t run sectionals last year as a Haddonfield junior. Haddonfield doesn’t compete in any meets other than sectionals at DREAM Park.

Senior Ashley Doyle became the first Delran girl in 43 years to qualify for states in consecutive years when she placed 7th at the Central Jersey Group 2 meet Saturday in Jamesburg.

Doyle, 8th last year, moved up to 7th this year, covering 5,000 meters at Thompson Park in 20:15.05.

It’s the best finish by a Delran girl since Madelyn Tattory placed 4th at the 2014 South Jersey Group 2 race in 19:38.0 at Delsea.

Doyle is the first Delran girl to qualify for states in consecutive seasons since Karen Pupo in 1981 and 1982. Pupo was 6th at South Jersey Group 2 at Pennsauken in 1981 and 6th at the state meet, also at Pennsauken. She placed 3rd at 1982 sectionals in Blackwood and qualified again for states, but there’s no sign of her in the results, although the best available results don’t go very deep.

Doyle this year won the BCSL Liberty Division race and was 5th at the County Open behind Julia Flanagan and three Cherokee girls.

She placed 20th at states last year with a 20:16 at Holmdel County Park, where this year’s state meet will be held on Saturday.The fastest time by a Delran girl at Holmdel is Tattory’s 20:09 at the 2014 state Group 2 meet.
