Shawnee boys enjoy their best day at states in nearly two decades!!!!!!

The Shawnee boys enjoyed their best day in nearly two decades at the state Group 3 meet Saturday at Holmdel.

It was the first time in 18 years that the Renegades placed in the top five at a state meet.

Led by senior Noah Stapleton in 16th place, the Renegades placed 5th in the state. It was their best finish since the 2006 team, led by then-freshman David Forward in 18th, placed 3rd.

Stapleton ran 16:48, a Holmdel PR. He ran 17:09 last year at Shore Coaches. His time is fastest by a Shawnee runner since Mark Miller ran 16:41 at the 2016 state Group 4 meet.

Also racing Saturday for Shawnee were senior Simon Bernhardt [30th in 17:04], junior Yanni Ekatomatis [41st in 17:12], senior Elias Knoll [58th in 17:31] and senior Jake Steelman [83rd in 17:59], with senior Finnegan Bracken just behind Steelman [88th in 18:05].

Shawnee’s 17:18 team average is their fastest since the 1998 state Group 4 meet, where they placed 4th with Dan Christensen [16:49], Adam Ambrus [17:02], Richard Stevenson [17:17], Adam Grant [17:20] and Will Peoples [17:44] averaging 17:14.

It was also 5th-fastest among all South Jersey schools on Saturday, behind only Haddonfield [16:21], Cherry Hill East [16:33], Cherokee [16:34] and Ocean City [16:45].

Shawnee came up a few spots shy of qualifying for Meet of Champions. In a merge of the 105 no non-winning teams, the Renegades ranked 15th. The top eight non-winning teams received at-large bids to the MoC.

Macy Huber, Grace Gutowski lead Paul VI girls to their fastest performance ever at Holmdel, lowest score in 22 years!!!!!!

Led by junior Macy Huber and sophomore Grace Gutowski, the Paul VI girls enjoyed their finest day in 22 years Saturday at Holmdel County Park.

Paul VI set a school record with a 20:13 average for its top five runners and placed 3rd in the state Parochial A meet with 74 points. That’s the program’s lowest total since 2002, when PVI placed 2nd to Red Bank with 68 points behind Erin Sigwart and Liz Kessler in 3rd and 4th.

Still waiting for the merge of non-winning teams to see who’s headed for the Meet of Champions back at Holmdel Saturday. Hopefully, Viper Timing isn’t in charge of that or we may never find out. But unofficially, Paul VI should be on its way.

Anyway, Paul VI’s 20:13 average was tied for 9th-fastest of all teams in all six races and 2nd-fastest among South Jersey schools, behind only Cherokee’s 20:10 in the state Group 4 meet.

Paul VI won state titles in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1994 and 1995 but never had a five-runner average close to 20:13.

Huber placed 3rd in 19:16 behind two Union Catholic runners and Gutowski was 5th in 19:38. Their times were 3rd- and 8th-fastest of all South Jersey runners Saturday.

Also for the Eagles, freshman Peyton Blake ran 20:16 and was the fastest freshman in the race in 13th place, freshman Morgan Kuzma was 23rd in 20:43 and sophomore Kara Salamone ran 21:16 for 30th. Freshman Johanna Trampe [41st in 21:44] and junior Verina Belmonte [49th in 22:19] also raced for PVI.

Huber’s time is 3rd-fastest all-time by a Paul VI girl, behind Dawn Cody’s 18:50 at the 1982 Meet of Champions and Shaelan McNally’s 18:56 at the 2021 Meet of Champions.

PVI lowered its all-time top-5 composite average from 19:21.2 to 19:15.2 with Huber lowering her Holmdel PR from 19:41 from this year’s Shore Coaches and Gutowski bumping Erin Carmody [19:43 in 1988] off the list. That moved them past Delsea [19:16.8], Seneca [19:20.8] and Bishop Eustace [19:20.8] and into the No. 10 spot on the all-time South Jersey Holmdel composite average performance list.

Nationally 11th-ranked Union Catholic won with 40 points and Pingry School of Basking Ridge was 2nd with 70. Paul VI is ranked 5th in New Jersey.

LED BY OVERALL WINNER BEN ANDRUS, HADDONFIELD PUTS 5 IN THE TOP 8 AND ROLLS TO 22ND STATE XC CHAMPIONSHIP & 7TH IN A ROW!!!!!!

Junior Benjamin Andrus won the individual title and Haddonfield placed all five scorers in the top eight – all in a 30-second compression – to win its 22nd state title and seventh in a row Saturday at Holmdel County Park.

Andrus joined his brother George in 2022 as the 2nd member of his family with a state Group 2 title.

Haddonfield averaged 16:20.69 on Holmdel’s historic 5,000-meter course and outscored 2nd-place Bernards 24-112.

The Bulldogs outscored the field 24-31.

Haddonfield’s 24-point total is the 2nd-lowest ever by a South Jersey school at states, lowest in 47 years and lowest ever by a public school. In 1977, St. Augustine scored a perfect 15 with John Pfaff, Tom Pfaff, Tom Baruffi, Bob Domico and Grteg Kazmierizak.

Bernards, which won 23 state titles from 1965 through 2004, is the only New Jersey public school to win more state titles than Haddonfield.

Although the meet wasn’t held in 2020, Haddonfield has won each of the last seven times it was contested, and their streak is 3rd-longest in state history, behind Bernards’ 14-year streak in Group 1 and 2 from 1974 through 1987 and CBA’s 11-year streak in Parochial A from 1995 through 2005.

Haddonfield’s 16:20.69 average is 3rd-fastest ever by a South Jersey school at Holmdel and fastest in 14 years. It’s also fastest ever at states. Mainland Regional averaged 16:19.12 when it won the 2003 Meet of Champions, and Haddonfield averaged 16:19.68 when it placed 2nd in the 2010 Meet of Champions.

The Bulldogs would only need to average a little over 1 ½ seconds per runner Saturday at the Meet of Champions to break the South Jersey record.

Here’s a look at the top-10 single-race team averages by South Jersey schools:

16:19.12 … Mainland Regional, 2003 Meet of Champions [1]
16:19.68 … Haddonfield, 2010 Meet of Champions [2]
16:20.69 … Haddonfield, 2024 State Group 2 [1]
16:21.56 … Haddonfield, 2001 Meet of Champions [1]
16:21.40 … Haddonfield, 2021 Meet of Champions [3]
16:22.4h ….. Mainland Regional, 2003 Shore Coaches
16:22.94 … Kingsway, 2017 Group 4 [1]
16:25.00 … Mainland Regional, 2003 Group 4 [1]
16:26.05 … Cherry Hill East, 2014 Group 4 [1]
16:27.2h ….. Paul VI, 1988 [1]

Andrus won by about 35 meters over Tommy Jendryka of Mendham, who was 2nd in 16:08. Jacob Nolan of Madison placed 3rd before three straight Haddonfield runners crossed the line – senior Bennett Wright [4th in 16:20], junior Ryan Gibson [5th in 16:21] and junior Peter Simpson [6th in 16:25].

After Bernards’ 1st runner crossed, Haddonfield’s Luke Andresen [8th in 16:32] made it five Bulldog finishers before any other school had its 2nd runner across the line. Senior 6th runner Aaron Keith also placed in the top 20, taking 19th in 17:11.

Haddonfield won its first state title in 1978 and has also won championships in 1980, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, all in Group 2 except 1985, 1987 and 1989 in Group 1.

Thanks to the MileSplit guys for sending me screen shots of the results since Viper Timing has yet to post any results from any race today.

CHEROKEE PACKS TOP 5 IN 22 SECONDS TO WIN 8TH STATE XC CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!

For the 3rd time in five years and the 8th time overall, Cherokee has won a state cross country title.

Cherokee edged Cherry Hill East 72-75 to win the state Group 4 title at Holmdel County Park, despite not having a runner among the top nine finishers.

But sophomore Benjamin Realley, junior Logan Bromley, freshman Jack Tindall, senior Liam Tindall and sophomore Sean Sooy packed in a 22-second gap between 10th and 22nd place to overcome a terrific race by Cherry Hill East.

Westfield, defending champion and the top-ranked school in Group 4, was 3rd with 87 points. In the lastest state poll, Westfield was ranked 4th, Cherokee 5th and Cherry Hill East 6th.

Realley placed 10th in 16:21, Bromley 11th in 16:26, Jack Tindall 16th in 16:38, Liam Tindall 21st in 16:43 and Sooy 22nd in 16:43. Jack Tindall, the top freshman in the state, has been sick all week and gutted out the race. Cherokee’s 6th runner, senior Enzo Corona, finished 25th in 16:46, giving the Chiefs six runners in 25 seconds.

Cherokee had four of the first nine underclassmen in the race. Eight of the top 17 underclassmen were from either Cherokee or Cherry Hill East.

Seniors Brandon Lyons and Brody Bogos gave Cherry Hill East two in the top 10, with Lyons 7th in 16:15 and Bogos 9th in 16:19. Juniors Will Nelson [17th in 16:38], Alvin Lin [19th in 16:40] and Milo Poerner [33rd in 16:57] were also in East’s top five.

Cherry Hill East’s 75-point total is the lowest non -winning score in Group 4 in 23 years, since Old Bridge edged Cherokee 63-69 in the 2001 meet.

Cherokee’s three-point margin of victory is the smallest in Group 4 since 2004, when Old Bridge edged Toms River North 87-90.

Kingsway sophomore Ryan Duffy placed 15th in 16:37.

NORTHERN’S LILIAH GORDON WINS HER THIRD STRAIGHT STATE XC TITLE!!!!!!

Northern Burlington senior Liliah Gordon became the fourth South Jersey girl to win three straight state cross country championships Saturday morning at Holmdel County Park.

Gordon joined Erin Donohue and Vanessa Wright of Haddonfield and Alyssa Aldridge of Mainland Regional as three-time winners when she won the state Group 3 race Saturday morning.

According to MileSplit, Gordon ran 17:58 and finished 125 meters ahead of 2nd-place Allison Lee of West Windsor-Plainsboro.

That 17:58 is a Holmdel PR for Gordon and makes her 8th-fastest South Jersey girl ever at Holmdel with the 12th-fastest time:

17:27.83 … Megan Venables [Highland Reg.], 2010
17:40 … Michelle Rowen [Washington Twp.], 1982
17:44 … Chelsea Ley [Kingsway], 2008
17:45 …….. Venables, 2010
17:45 … Briana Gess [Haddonfield], 2013
17:50 …….. Venables, 2010
17:52 … Chelsea Ley [Kingsway], 2010
17:52 …….. Ley [Kingsway], 2009
17:55 …….. Ley, 2009
17:55 … Megan Lacy [Cherokee], 2010
17:55 … Alyssa Aldridge [Mainland], 2016
17:58 …….. Ley, 2008
17:58 … Liliah Gordon [Northern Burlington], 2024

We don’t know Gordon’s winning time or who placed 2nd or any other information on the race and the timing company hired to provide live results hasn’t posted any results all day.

But Gordon bounced back Saturday after placing 2nd at Central Jersey Group 3 Sectionals, where she finished 125 meters behind Lee.

Goredon placed 2nd to Lilly Shapiro of Colts Neck as a freshman, then won Group 3 as a sophomore in 18:57 and a junior in 18:14.

Donohue won four straight state titles from 1997 through 2000 – the first two in Group 1, the next two in Group 2. Wright won Group 2 from 2002 through 2005 and Aldridge won Group 3 from 2015 through 2017.

Previous two-time winners from Burlington County were Kari Vigerstol of Holy Cross in Parochial A in 1993 and 1994 and Cherokee’s Megan Lacy in Group 4 in 2010 and 2011.

We’ll add more details as soon as we have them.

Wilmington’s Dan Wyshinski of Pennsville runs huge 10K PR and places 17th at NCAA Division 2 East Regionals!!!!!!

Strong race Saturday morning from Pennsvilla graduate Dan Wyshinski, who placed 17th out of nearly 150 runners in the NCAA Division 2 East Regional in Rochester, N.Y.

Wyshinski, a senior at Wilmington, covered the 10K course at Matt St. James Trail in 32:13, a big PR. That’s actually faster than his track 10K PR of 32:58.79 from a meet in May in Lakewood. His XC 10K PR was 34:13 from a meet in 2021 in Rochester.

Wyshinski placed 2nd in the CACC Championships last month at Belmont Plateau in Philly and was the top runner as Wilmington won the team title 49-67 over Caldwell (N.J.) University.

Nobody seems to know who advances to the NCAA Division 2 Nationals in Sacramento in two weeks, but if I find out I’ll add the info.

Still no results from Holmdel!!!!!!

I was planning to post stories from each race at Holmdel today, but so far –  an hour after the boys Group 1 race ended – the timing company has still not posted any results.

This is the state championships and we can’t get live results in 2024. Unreal.

This seems to be a recurring problem with several timing companies not named Tomahawk. With the technology available today, it’s unbelievable that these companies aren’t able to provide live results. Heck, we were getting them 20 years ago.

Something goes wrong every single time. Honestly, they should be posting results and in-progress team scores during the race from each mile marker or each 1K. They have the technology to do it. Yet we can’t even tell you what happened in the boys Group 1 race that ended an hour ago.

This is a disgrace and an insult to athletes, coaches, parents and fans of track and cross country.

I think everybody reading this should contact NJSIAA track and field director Al Stumpf at astumpf@njsiaa.org and suggest the NJSIAA finds a timing company that’s able to actually provide results in real time.

EDIT: It’s 11:05 a.m. and still no results. I’m going for a run. I’ll try again later.

UPDATE: It’s now 4:08 p.m. and Viper Timing still hasn’t posted any results. The meet began nearly seven hours ago. MileSplit is doing the best it can, and if we ever get any more results I’ll have more posts.

Live results! All-time winners! All-time performance lists! It’s all here and lots more at the state XC championship link hub!!!!!!

The first New Jersey state track championships were held in 1919 at Branch Brook Park in Newark, with the girls meet starting in 1972  at Holmdel.

The first South Jersey boy to win a state title was legendary Browning Ross of Woodbury in 1942, six years before he represented the U.S. in the Olympics in London.

The first South Jersey girls to win state titles were Monique Purcell of Holy Spirit and Eva Marie Berardi of Williamstown, both in 1978. The first teams were Lower Cape May Regional in 1950 and Shawnee in 1976.

There was no meet in 2020 so Saturday’s state championships are the 105th annual. That’s a century worth of runners getting walked down in the final 50 meters!

Good luck to everyone racing at Holmdel County Park Saturday!
