Another race, another record for Sianni Wynn.

The amazing Pennsauken sophomore smashed her 3rd meet record of the weekend Saturday when she won the 200-meter dash at the South Jersey Group 4 Championships in a sizzling 23.76.

That’s 3rd-fastest in New Jersey history behind Woodrow Wilson’s Dennisha Page in 2019 and Willingboro’s Michelle Glover in 1981.

Wynn broke the meet record of 24.09 set in 2007 by Olympic gold medalist English Gardner of Eastern.

Wynn this weekend has run the 3rd-fastest 100 in state history [11.39], the 13th-fastest 400 time in state history [53.80] and now the 3rd-fastest 200 in state history. Unfortunately, no wind gauge at Pennsauken, so only the 400 is eligible for record purposes.

Wynn is the only high school runner in New Jersey history to run that fast in all three events and only the 6th woman from New Jersey to run that fast in the 100, 200 and 400 at any point in their life.

Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran the fastest 200 in South Jersey history Saturday at Group 4 sectionals and posted the 3rd-fastest time in state history.

Dwyer ran 20.86, edging Southern Regional’s Cole Isaac Cramer, who was 2nd in 21.01, with Rancocas Valley sophomore not far back in 21.36.

All three ran under the FAT meet record of 21.53 set in 2004 by Winslow Township’s Reuben McCoy at Egg Harbor.

Once again, no wind gauge at Pennsauken, so Dwyer’s time isn’t eligible for record purposes. But it will go down as the fastest all-conditions 200 in South Jersey history.
The previous record was 21.06 set by Olympic gold medalist Dennis Mitchell of Edgewood when he placed 2nd at the 1984 Keebler Prep Invitational in Elk Grove, Ill.

The only faster times in state history were recorded by Nottingham’s Shamali Whittle, who ran 20.55 in 2022 and Franklin’s Mario Heslop, who ran 20.74 in 2018.

Howard’s 21.36 is No. 2 in Burlington County history behind Malachi James’ 21.13 earlier this year in New York and No. 7 in South Jersey history.

Yashahya Brown continued closing in on the state hurdles record Saturday with a lifetime-best 13.48 win at the South Jersey Group 4 Championships at Pennsauken.

Brown’s time is No. 4 in state history and only 8-100ths off the state record of 13.40 set last year by Nathaniel Rayan of Scotch Plains-Fanwood at the USATF Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Ore.

It’s No. 6 in the U.S. this year, according to the MileSplit national database.

He’s only 5-100ths of a second off the South Jersey record of 13.43 set by Camden’s Danyne Brown at the 1999 state Group 3 meet at South Plainfield.

Brown, a senior at Washington Township, broke his own meet record of 13.84 set last year, also at Pennsauken.

Once again, no wind gauge at Pennsauken.

Brown lowered his PR from 13.50 at South Jersey Elite at Delsea last month. He won over Williamstown senior Alexander Hollimon, who ran a PR 13.93 in the trials earlier Saturday, No. 17 in South Jersey history and No. 3 in Gloucester County history behind Brown and Delsea’s Sultan Tucker [13.66 in 1997]. Hollimon ran 14.15 in the final.

Brown also ran a 100 PR of 10.56 on Friday for 3rd place in the historic race won by his teammate, Ajani Dwyer, in 10.21.

Sianni Wynn won her 2nd sectional title of the weekend Saturday morning with the 13th-fastest 400-meter dash time in state history.

Wynn, a Pennsauken sophomore, ran 53.80 on her home track at South Jersey Group 4 sectionals, lowering her PR from 53.97 from her win at last year’s state Group 4 meet at Somerset. She ran unpressed, winning by about 15 meters.

She broke her own South Jersey Group 4 sectional record of 54.01 that she ran last year at Pennsauken on the way to the Meet of Champions title. She’s never lost a high school 400-meter dash race in New Jersey.

The only faster time in South Jersey sectional history in any group is a 53.49 run by Clayton’s Arianna Sharpe at the 2022 South Jersey Group 1 sectionals at Buena.

Her time is 2nd-fastest ever by a South Jersey sophomore, behind a 53.64 by Seneca’s Michelle Brown – who was inducted into the South Jersey Track Hall of Fame in March – at 2008 Greensboro Nationals. It’s fastest by any New Jersey sophomore since Olympic 400 hurdles gold medalist and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic ran 52.59 at the 2015 state Parochial A meet at South Plainfield.

On Friday, Wynn won the 100 with a blazing 11.39 but without a wind gauge.

The first 11 finishers overall broke 60 seconds, with Eastern sophomore Natalie Dumas PR’ing with 56.34 for 2nd place and Washington Township senior Dahlia Beasley 3rd in 56.50.

Clayton junior Alexander Osayemi got the South Jersey Group 1 meet off to an electrifying start Saturday morning with the fastest 400 by any South Jersey runner this year and the 2nd-fastest time in meet history.

Osayemi won a fast race at Pennsauken in 47.98, the fastest time by any South Jersey Group 1 runner since Darrell Bush of Woodbury ran 46.95 to place 2nd at the 2011 Meet of Champions at Old Bridge.

The only other South Jersey Group 1 runner to run sub-48 is Woodbury’s Shawney Kersey, who ran 47.88 to win the 2007 state Group 1 title at South Plainfield.

Bush set the South Jersey Group 1 meet record of 47.41 in 2011. The only other quarter-milers to run faster than Osayemi in the last 20 years in any South Jersey sectional race are Pennsauken’s Premier Wynn [47.39 in Group 4 in 2023] and Cherry Hill East’s Alex Reber [47.96 in Group 4 in 2012].

Osayemi’s previous PR was 48.08 at South Jersey Elite last month at Delsea. His 47.98 is No. 5 in Gloucester County history and fastest since Bush in 2012. He broke the school record of 47.99 set by Elliott DeShields at the 2011 Meet of Champions at Old Bridge.

Woodbury junior Marquis Taylor was 2nd with a PR of his own at 48.33, which is the 6th-fastest Group 1 time in South Jersey Group 1 history and 8th-fastest in Gloucester County history. Glassboro senior Cartrell Moore was 3rd in a PR 49.15. Woodbury senior Jayden Johnson also broke 50 with a 49.67 for 4th place.

In the long history of New Jersey track, there’s never been a day like it.

There’s never been a day close to it.

Forgetting wind readings for a moment, the three-fastest boys 100-meter dashes and the three-fastest girls 100-meter dashes in New Jersey high school track history all happened at either Pennsauken or Delsea Friday.

When the day began, Rahway’s Danny Johnson and St. Peter’s Prep’s Fitzroy Ledgister shared the state record in the 100 at 10.30, Johnson at the 2001 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield and Ledgister at 2022 West Philly Nationals at Franklin Field.

And Michelle Glover of Willingboro had held the state girls record of 11.42 since she won the 1981 TAC meet at L.A. Coliseum (with a legal wind).

First Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran 10.24 in the Group 4 100 trials at Pennsauken – fastest in state history – and then Burlington City’d Malachi James ran 10.18 on the same track in the Group 1 final. Dwyer and Southern Regional’s Cole Isaac Cramer then ran 10.21 and 10.22 in the Group 4 final.

In the girls competition, Pennsauken sophomore Sianni Wynn ran 11.39 to win Group 4 on her home track and moments later Timber Creek teammates Ryan Jennings and Naylah Jones both ran slightly faster, 11.33 for Jennings and 11.38 for Jones.

In the span of about 90 minutes, the all-time New Jersey 100-meter lists were both rewritten.

With a big asterisk. All the times at Pennsauken are considered wind-aided because there was no wind gauge at the track. Although we will list the performances as best ever in any conditions and with a “NWI” for no wind information, for record purposes or qualifying for major meets, any performances made in races under 200 meters are considered wind aided if they’re assisted by a tailwind of more than 2.0 meters per second or if there’s no wind gauge.

So what are the official state records? Anybody can make their own lists. There are no official lists. But Johnson ran his 10.30 with a 2.2 wind, Ledgister ran his 10.30 with a 5.4 wind at Franklin Field and Heslop ran 10.33 without a wind gauge at Howell in 2019.

So what is the fastest 100 in New Jersey history with legal wind? The actual state record belongs to Camden’s Jamar Ervin, who ran 10.35 at the 2000 Meet of Champions at South Brunswick with a 2.0 wind reading (after running 10.38 with a 3.1 in the trials).

The good news is that James, Dwyer and Cramer will have more chances to run sub-10.35 and hopefully there will be wind gauges at the Group 1 and 4 meet at Somerset and the Group 2 and 3 meet at Delsea. The Meet of Champions will be June 12 back at Pennsauken.

As for the girls, Jennings is now the state record holder with legal wind. Or any wind.

One thing is for sure. The Meet of Champions finals are going to be insane.

Glassboro, seeking its first sectional title since 2009, built up a 34-point lead over Woodbury on Day 1 at Pennsauken. Glassboro got wins from its 4-by-1 team, senior Damere Lassiter in the discus and senior Cartrell Moore in the triple jump.

Camden, also seeking its first team title since 2009, leads Willingboro by 11 points at 44-33, with Sterling and Haddonfield at 28 and Cedar Creek 22. Camden got a win in the 4-by-1, a 1-2-4 finish from Jaiden Steele, Jawan Brownlee and Ibn Muhammad in the 100 and win from high jumper Teron Murray.

Salem and Audubon are locked up in a very close meet, with Salem holding a two-point lead at 53-51 going into Saturday. Audubon got wins from Riley Fayer in the 800 and 3,200 and Arianna Bittner in the 400-meter hurdles. Salem’s Karima Davenport won the long jump Friday.

Group 3
Eleven points separates five teams, with Timber Creek [45], Winslow Township [41], Mainland Regional [40], Ocean City [38] and Absegami [34] all within range of a team title. In addition to record-setting Ryan Jennings and Naylah Jones in the 100 – they ran the two-fastest times in state history – Timber Creek got a win from its 400-meter relay team.

Group 4
Washington Township holds a two-point lead over Rancocas Valley at 52-50, with Eastern not far back with 40 points. Washington Township got wins from Ella Karp in the shot put, Dahlia Beasley in the long jump and Cali Lacovara in the pole vault. R.V. doesn’t have any wins but went 2-3-4 in the intermediates for 18 points.

Central Jersey Group 1 Boys
A bonus look at Central Jersey Group 1 in Hillsborough, where Florence leads Manville 46-43 going into Saturday. Florence won the 4-by-1 with anchor Barone VanKline also winning the 100 and Darien Woody winning the triple jump.

Eastern senior Zoe Goldberg popped the No. 8 javelin throw in South Jersey history Friday afternoon at Group 4 sectionals at Pennsauken.

Goldberg PR’d with a 146-1, about a foot and a half beyond her PR of 144-6 from the Woodbury Relays in April. That’s No. 1 in New Jersey this year.

The winning throw came on her 1st attempt, and she added a 142-4 on her 2nd throw. Junior Riley Brazier of Toms River North PR’d at 139-7 for 2nd. Her previous PR was 135-2 from a meet at Southern Regional in April. Senior Aniyah Smith made it a 1-3 Eastern finish with a 117-10 for 3rd.

Goldberg is the first girl from Eastern in 22 years to win a sectional javelin title. Caitlin Cielo won in 2001 with a 116-5 and in 2002 with a 142-11, both at Buena both with the old implement.

Timber Creek teammates Ryan Jennings and Nylah Jones ran the two-fastest 100-meter dash times in state history in the 100-meter dash final Friday afternoon at Group 3 Sectionals at Delsea.

Jennings ran 11.33 and Jones 11.38 with a legal 1.9 meters-per-second tailwind, both going under the state record of 11.42 set by Willingboro’s Michelle Glover at the 1981 TAC Junior Nationals at UCLA.

Their times are 5th- and 6th-fastest in the U.S. this year with legal wind according to the MileSplit database.

Jones and Jennings had run 11.45 and 11.47 earlier Friday in the trials, both going under Olympic gold medalist English Gardner’s Camden County record of 11.49 from 2008 Group 4 Sectionals at Egg Harbor.

Both are now qualified to race in Eugene in June in the USATF Under 20 Championships, with a chance to make the national team that will compete in Lima, Peru, in the World Under 20’s.

On the World Athletics Under-20 list, Jennings is now No. 12 in the world and Jones is No. 19. They’re No. 4 and 6 on the U.S. Under-20 list.

Jennings and Jones are now the 10th-fastest and 14th-fastest women ever from New Jersey.

A few minutes after Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran the fastest 100-meter dash in state history in the qualifying rounds of the South Jersey Group 4 sectionals at Pennsauken, Burlington City senior Malachi James ran even faster.

Dwyer ran 10.24, the fastest time under any conditions in state history, and James topped him with a 10.18 in the Group 1 final – tragically without a wind gauge.

Without a wind gauge at Pennsauken, the performance is not eligible to be recognized as a state record, but it’s the fastest time under any conditions ever. According to all track bodies, any race 200 meters or shorter that’s contested without a wind guage is automatically considered wind-aided.

So even though Dwyer and James both ran faster, the official state record remains 10.35 set by Jamar Ervin of Camden at the 2000 Meet of Champions at South Brunswick with a 2.0 wind reading – the maximum allowable for a race to be considered legal.

James’ time is 4th-fastest in the U.S. this year under any conditions and would have made him the No. 37 American man this year if a wind gauge had been present. It would have been No. 2 among American men in the Under 20 category and No. 8 in the world.

It also would have been a provisional qualifying mark for this summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials. But wind-aided marks are not eligible for consideration.
