Haddonfield packed its five scorers in an insane 19 seconds and cruised to its South Jersey-record 11th state cross country title Saturday at Holmdel.

Junior Audrey Naticchia, freshman Riley Austin, junior Ava Thomas and senior Helene Usher placed 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th in 19:30 through 19:36 and junior Riley Slootsky was 11th in 19:49 in the state Group 2 championship race.

Haddonfield averaged 19:36 over the 5,000-meter Holmdel County Park course, the 4th-fastest single-race time in South Jersey history at Holmdel and the fastest ever at the state meet. The only faster times are Cherokee’s 19:23 to win last year’s Meet of Champions, Haddonfield’s 19:31 to win the 2020 Holmdel Invitational and Haddonfield’s 19:35 for 5th at the 2013 Meet of Champions.

The fastest previous team average by a South Jersey school at Holmdel in the state meet was Haddonfield’s 19:52 to win last year’s state Group 2 title.

Haddonfield is ranked No. 2 in the state, behind only Union Catholic, which averaged 20:17 Saturday in wining the state Parochial A championship. They will meet Saturday at Holmdel in the Meet of Champions.

In New Jersey XC history, only Red Bank Catholic (20) and Bernards (12) have won more state titles than Haddonfield. Shawnee is second among South Jersey schools, with eight between 1983 and 2003.

Haddonfield won Group 1 in 1990 and 1993, then Group 2 in 1994, before returning to Group 1 and winning the 1998 title. After returning to Group 2, the Bulldogs won in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, then 2016 and 2021.

Haddonfield outscored 2nd-place Rumson-Fair Haven by 69 points, 36-105. The 36 points are the lowest winning total in Group 2 since Voorhees topped Bernards 34-103 in 2012. The 69-point margin of victory matched the largest since 2005, when Haddonfield defeated Chatham by 79 points – 33-116.

Haddonfield’s runners are virtually interchangeable. Their 1-2-3-4-5 runners Saturday finished as their 5-3-4-2 runners at sectionals.

Paul VI junior Shaelan McNally punched her ticket to next weekend’s Meet of Champions with a 5th-place finish at the state Parochial A meet Saturday at Holmdel County Park.

McNally ran 19:11 – 30 seconds faster than she ran at last year’s state meet, where she placed 6th and only five seconds off her time from last year’s Meet of Champions.

Her finish is the best at the state meet by a Paul VI runner in 20 years, since Erin Sigwart and Liz Kessler placed 3rd and 4th in the 2002 Parochial A race on the same course.

McNally has had a terrific season, with a 4th at Shore Coaches and wins at the Manhattan Invitational, Camden County Championships, Olympic Conference Championships and Bob Kiessling Invitational, the unofficial South Jersey non-public championships.

Freshman Macy Huber gave Paul VI two runners in the top 20. Huber placed 16th in 20:47.

George Andrus ran 15:41 Saturday, making him 12th-fastest in South Jersey history at Holmdel and leading Haddonfield to its 5th consecutive state title and 20th overall.

Haddonfield outscored 2nd-place short-handed Cinnaminson by a 47-118 score in the state Group 2 meet at Holmdel and joined Christian Brothers Academy (31) and Bernards (23) as only the 3rd school in state history to win 20 state cross country titles. Next-most among South Jersey schools is Haddon Township with 11.

Third-place Haddon Heights made it a 1-2-3 South Jersey sweep. Heights scored 137 points. The same three schools swept the top three spots last year as well. This year, only the team winner gets an auto bid to the Meet of Champions.

Andrus’s time is tied for 2nd-fastest in Haddonfield history at the legendary 5,000-meter Holmdel County Park layout. Former teammate Seth Clevenger ran 15:36 at last year’s Meet of Champions. Jon Vitez also ran 15:41 for Haddonfield at Holmdel at the 2009 Meet of Champions.

Senior Robert DiMedio [10th in 16:56], senior Donald Jellig [12th in 17:06], senior Ian Romea [13th in 17:08] and junior Matthew Sullivan [16th in 17:17] gave Haddonfield all five scorers in the top 10.

Andrus joins Jim Smith [1979], Dan Gough [1985, 1986], Joe Shanahan [1987], Eric Bonnette [1995, 1996], Chris Platt [2001, 2002], Vitez [2007, 2008, 2009], Ben Potts [2010] and Clevenger [2021] as Haddonfield’s ninth state champ.

The Bulldogs’ 5th consecutive title ties the South Jersey record set by Haddonfield from 2006 through 2010 in Group 2. It’s the 4th-longest streak in state history, behind CBA’s 14-year streak from 1974 through 1987 in Groups 1 and 2, CBA’s 11-year streak in Parochial A from 1995 through 2005 and a six-season streak by Passaic from 1927 through 1932 before there were groups.

No other public school has ever won more than four straight, so Haddonfield has matched the longest winning streak by a public school in 90 years.

Haddonfield has won a state Group 2 championship 11 of the last 15 times the meet was contested.

The Bulldogs won their first state title in Group 2 in 1978 and also won Group 2 in 1980 before winning Group 1 in 1985, 1987, 1989 and 1990. After moving back to Group 2, and won titles in 2000, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. The state meet wasn’t held in 2020.

More on Cinnaminson and Heights later, but Cinnaminson was led by senior Alex Boyko in 5th in 16:35 and senior Matt McCarron in 7th in 16:41 and Heights by senior Jack Bolling in 4th in 16:33.

Collingswood junior Elijah Forrest placed 9th in 16:49, earning an auto bid to next weekend’s Meet of Champions.

This is my best attempt at an all-time South Jersey Holmdel County Park single-race performance list.

I used 16:45 as the boys cutoff and 20:30 as the girls cutoff. If you notice any performances that are incorrect over missing, lemme know in the comment section!

If I have time I’ll try to put together an all-time South Jersey all-time Holmdel list, with the top five times from each school throughout Holmdel history. That might not be until after states.

There aren’t many courses that have been in use as long as Holmdel County Park. It first hosted the the state championships in 1976, although 1976 and 1977 were over 3.0 miles, and in 1978 the Bowl was run counter-clockwise. The current layout has been in use since 1979.

So Saturday’s state meet will be the 47th in a row at Holmdel and the 45th on the current 5,000-meter course.

The Meet of Champions has been held every year at Holmdel since 1976, although it was also there a few earlier years over 3.0 miles (and 2.0 miles for the girls race) before detouring to Buccleuch Park and Pennsauken briefly and eventually landing permanently at Holmdel. Like the state meet, the boys and girls have all run over 5,000 meters at Holmdel since 1978.

The Shore Coaches Invite has been held at Holmdel since 1979 after starting out at Brookdale Community College in nearby Lincroft.

How fast did the Haddonfield girls run Saturday?

It defies belief.

In winning its 13th South Jersey Group 2 cross country title – and 25th in the last 30 years – Haddonfield swept the top five spots in the race, packed its five scorers in a 21-second gap and averaged 18:19.90 – fastest on any course in South Jersey history and believed to be fastest five-runner average ever recorded by any school in New Jersey XC history.

Yes, this was on the flat, fast DREAM Park speedway in Logan Township, and yes conditions were perfect. But whatever the course or the conditions, this was a historic performance by Haddonfield, ranked No. 2 in the state.

Junior Ava Thomas [18:06.37], junior Riley Slootsky [18:15.42], freshman Riley Austin [18:23.34], senior Helene Usher [18:26.70] and junior Audrey Naticchia [18:27.67] not only outscored 2nd-place Sterling 15-68, they placed 3-5-8-10-12 in a merge of the four sectional races, meaning they had five of the 12-fastest times in a meet that involved nearly 400 runners.

Only 12 girls have run under 18:20 at DREAM Park, seven of them on Saturday. Haddonfield’s average from sectionals would rank 12^th on the all-time DREAM Park performance list:

Clearview is ranked No. 4 in the state and outscored Ocean City 31-86 to easily win the South Jersey Group 3 title. Yet scored against Haddonfield, the Bulldogs win 20-36, with Haddonfield 6th runner sophomore Dylan Melcher bumping Clearview’s fifth runner.

Clearview’s 18:53.20 average was 2nd-fastest from sectionals, and only two Central Jersey schools were also under 20 minutes per runner – Toms River North [19:49.01] and Southern Regional [19:57.57]. Mainland was just over at 20:03.12.

Scored as a full merge, Haddonfield beats Clearview 38-87, with Toms River North [197] and Southern Regional [201] the only other teams within 200 points of Haddonfield.

Coming into this year’s sectionals, the fastest team time ever run at DREAM Park was Haddonfield’s 18:51 at last year’s sectionals. Haddonfield beat that by more than half a minute. Haddonfield also recorded a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep last year but only Usher and Naticchia returned from that team.

And get this: Haddonfield’s 2022 average of 18:19.90 is faster than any other school’s all-time top-five average. DREAM Park has only been in use since 2018, but still. The fastest all-time team average other than Haddonfield belongs to Cherokee, whose five-fastest all-time at DREAM Park averaged 18:35.55.

Haddonfield’s all-time top-5 is actually a tad faster than 18:19.90 – 18:19.58, to be exact, since Anne Earp ran a fraction of a second faster in last year’s sectional than Audrey Naticchia ran this year.

After Haddonfield’s 18:19.58 and Cherokee’s 18:35.55, the next-fastest all-time team at DREAM Park is Haddonfield’s B team – Audrey Naticchia [18:27.67], Sarah Naticchia [18:37.00], Jess Goode [18:46.01], Sabrina Miller [18:53.29] and Allison Colflesh [18:59.70] – is next-fastest at 18:44.73. Clearview is next with its 18:53.20 average, all from this year. Cherry Hill East is 4th at 19:06.11.

Elijah Whitaker became Glassboro’s first sectional XC champ in 27 years Saturday at DREAM Park in Logan Township.

Whitaker outraced Audubon junior Aiden Williams to the finish line to win the South Jersey Group 1 race, Whitaker finishing in 16:09 and Williams 15 meters back in 16:13.

Whitaker became the Bulldogs’ first sectional winner since Pat Ryan won the South Jersey Group 1 race at Kingsway in 1995. Ryan was the third straight Glassboro winner, following Tom Horne in both 1993 and 1994. Glassboro actually went 1-2 in 1993 with Horne and Tim Graves.

Whitaker has come a long way since placing 17th at last year’s sectionals, where he was only the eighth underclassman across the finish line. His time this year was nearly two minutes faster than the 17:54 he ran at DREAM Park at last year’s sectionals.

Glassboro hadn’t had a top-10 finisher at sectionals in 14 years, since Lamere Buchanan placed 8th in the 2008 meet at Delsea.

Whitaker will become Glassboro’s first representative at the state Group 1 meet since Buchanan placed 34th at the 2008 meet. The state Group 1 race is scheduled for noon at Holmdel County Park.

Horne won the state Group 1 title by more than 40 seconds in 1993, with Graves taking 3rd. Horne was 3rd in 1994 and Ryan won the state title in 1995.

Junior Aziz Muhammad-Kane, senior Gavin Gallo and senior Cole Knoedler all finished in the top seven and paced Highland to its seventh sectional XC title and fifth in the last 10 years.

Highland outran Ocean City, 44-58, to win the South Jersey Group 3 title at DREAM Park in Logan Township, outside Glassboro.

Muhammad-Kane ran 15:46 and placed 2nd to Woodbury junior Peyton Shute, who won the race in 15:16. Gallo and Knoedler ran 6th and 7th in 16:04 and 16:05.

Senior Jake Smith was next across the line for Highland, placing 11th in 16:22, and sophomore 5th man Mason Wassell locked up the team title in 19th place in 16:59.

Highland previously won South Jersey Group titles in 1993 and 1994 and Group 3 in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2020.

Senior Nick Scarangelli and junior Matt Hoffman led Ocean City in 3rd and 4th place, Scarangelli in 15:48 and Hoffman 16:00.

Others in the top 10 included Clearview senior Cavan Agatone [5th in 16:01], Moorestown senior Colin Shand [8th in 16:07], Moorestown freshman Peter Simpson [9th in 16:10] and Delsea freshman Matthew Littlehales [10th in 16:12].

Simpson and Littlehales posted the fastest times ever by freshmen in the five years since DREAM Park was first used. The previous freshman course record was 16:26, set Tayshaun Wilson of Toms River North at last year’s South Jersey Group 3 meet. The fastest previous time by a South Jersey freshman was 16:48 by Williamstown’s Dylan Saber at last year’s Group 4 sectional race.

Shawnee junior Ryan Kaczur [14th in 16:36] and Mainland senior Elliot Post [15th in 16:37] also placed in the top 15.

Also qualifying for the state Group 3 meet next weekend at Holmdel County Park were Shawnee [119], Delsea [140] and Moorestown [143].

Cherry Hill East senior Alexis Tepper ran an all-course PR and the 6th-fastest time of the day Saturday at the South Jersey Group 4 race at DREAM Park in Logan Township.

Tepper ran 18:15 and placed 2nd to Toms River North freshman Jessica Abbott while also leading East to a 4th-place team finish.

Tepper’s previous 5,000 PR was an 18:26 on the same course last week at the Olympic Conference Championships, where she placed 2nd to Paul VI’s Shaelen McNally.

That 18:15 is No. 8 in course history.

Seven runners broke 19 minutes in perfect conditions on the flat, fast DREAM Park layout. Atlantic City senior Madeline Dischert placed 3rd in 18:22, Egg Harbor junior Michaela Schelmo ran 18;26 for 4th, Kingsway senior Nicole Lipieta was 5th in 18:42, Cherokee junior Kerry O’Day took 6th in 18:57 and Williamstown senior Alexa Fisher clocked 18:59 for 7th place.

Other South Jersey runners in the top 15 were Cherokee senior Kelsey Niglio [9th in 19:04], Cherokee sophomore Megan Niglio [10th in 19:27], Washington Township sophomore Kaylee Russen [11th in 19:49], Egg Harbor junior Taylor Rooney [12th in 19:57] and Washington Township senior Sophia Bostwick [13th in 19:57].

Toms River North edged Southern 77-83 to win the team title. Washington Township [109], Cherry Hill East [111] and Egg Harbor [124] qualified for the state Group 4 meet next weekend at Holmdel County Park.
