Northern Burlington’s Keira Mansure and Atlantic City’s Maddie Dischert both moved into Rider’s all-time top-10 at 5,000 meters at the John Thomas Terrier Classic Friday night at Boston Universiity.

Mansure, a sophomore ran 17:31.22 and Dischert, a freshman, ran 17:45.09, which puts Mansure at No. 6 in Rider history and Dischert at No. 8.

Mansure’s previous PR at 5,000 meters was an 18:25.92 outdoors last April at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. This was her first-ever indoor 5,000. This was Dischert’s first track 5,000.

Mansure and Dischert now rank 11th and 12th in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at 5,000 meters.

Dischert is the No. 2 freshman in the 5,000 and Mansure is the No. 3 sophomore.

On the MAAC 2024 performance list, Mansure is also 13th in the mile with her PR 5:08.42 at Ocean Breeze earlier this month and 16th at 3,000 meters with a lifetime-best 10:20.91 last month at the Armory. Dischert is 12th in the MAAC in the 3,000 with a 10:13.21, also at the Armory.

According to Rider’s web site, Mansure qualified for the ECAC Championships in Boston the first weekend of March. However, it’s impossible to determine exactly what the standard and how close Dischert is is because it’s not listed anywhere. All the links – including qualifying standards – on the ECAC web site for the meet are dead.

 

Bishop Eustace senior Shawn Brady became the latest member of the 56-foot club with a 56-1 throw at the Olympic and Tri-County meet at the Bubble Friday.

Brady improved his PR from 55-6 ½, which he threw last weekend at Cherokee. Brady, a Meet of Champions medalist in the discus last spring, is now No. 6 in the state this winter and No. 6 in Camden County history and

Brady broke the Bishop Eustace indoor record of 55-7 ½, set by Phil Hatfield at the 1995 Meet of Champions at Jadwin Gym.

It’s already been an incredible year for South Jersey shot putters. Six throwers are over 55 feet and we haven’t even gotten to sectionals yet. This is the first time since 2013 that six South Jersey throwers have hit 55 feet in an indoor season.

 Damere Lassiter, Glassboro: Threw a PR 56-11 at the Cherokee Throwdown #2. That’s No. 1 in South Jersey this year and No. 2 in the state. Lassiter matched that 56-11 three days later at the Bubble. Lassiter has already thrown well beyond his outdoor PR of 54-11 from Group 1 states last spring at Franklin. His 56-11 is No. 10 in Gloucester County history. Lassiter threw 184-8 in the discus last year and was a Meet of Champions medalist. He was No. 12 junior in the country.

 Anthony Liakhnovich, Hammonton: Hit 56-10 ¼ at the Cherokee Throwdown, No. 8 in Atlantic County history and No. 3 in the state so far this year. Also the No. 1 underclassman in New Jersey. Had never thrown 50 feet before the state relays two weeks ago.

 Jonathan Harris, Delsea: Harris threw 56-2 ¾ at the Olympic-Tri County meet at the Bubble Saturday, surpassing his indoor PR of 55-5 ½ from state relays. He’s No. 3 in South Jersey this year and No. 4 in the state and he’s the No. 2 underclassman, behind Liakhnovich. Harris threw 58-4 ½ at West Philly Nationals in June.

 Gabriel Wilkins, Absegami: Wilkins joined the 55-foot club Saturday with a 55-8 win at the South Jersey Track Coaches Association meet at the Bubble. His previous PR was 53-11 earlier this month at a SJTCA meet at Ocean Breeze. He hadn’t hit 50 feet until last month. His 55-8 is No. 9 in Atlantic County history, just behind Liakhnovich. Wilkins is No. 7 in the state this year and No. 5 in South Jersey.

 Greg Masso, Delsea: Masso hit a PR 55-6 at the Olympic-Tri County meet. His previous PR was 55-4 ¾ at Delsea in May, and his indoor PR was 53-8 ½ from the Bubble last month. He’s No. 8 in New Jersey and No. 6 in South Jersey.

 Bordentown senior Brock Schenk is just a few inches short of 55 feet with his 54-8 at Cherokee Throwdown #2 last week, No. 7 in South Jersey, and Paul VI junior Savien Higgs is the No. 6 underclassman in the state this year with his 54-6 ½ at Ocean Breeze earlier this month. That is No. 8 in South Jersey.

Kadence Dumas, a Delaware freshman from Eastern, ran the 4th-fastest 500 meters in school history Saturday in a meet in Boston.

Dumas won the 500 at the Umass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational at the TRACK at New Balance in 1:14.92, finishing ahead of 2nd-place Victoria Guerrier, who ran 1:15.67.

This was Dumas’s first race as a collegian and first race of any kind since June, when she won the Meet of Champions 800 in 2:10.44 at Franklin High. It was also the first 500 she’s ever run on any level.

Her time trails only three women in Delaware Blue Hens history: Michaela Meyer ran 1:11.96 at Ocean Breeze in 2020, Lenape graduate Carly Pettipaw ran 1:14.71 at the Armory in 2019 and Sydni Stovall ran 1:14.80 at Ocean Breeze in 2020.

Dumas’s time is fastest in the Colonial Athletic Association this year, bumping Dominique Biron of Northeastern, who ran 1:15.32 earlier this month on the same track.

Dumas also ran the third second leg on Delaware’s 1,600-meter relay, which placed 7th in 3:54.43.

Burlington City senior Malachi James broke the Burlington County 55-meter dash record Saturday and moved into the all-time New Jersey top-10 at the South Jersey Track Coaches Association meet at the Bubble.

James lowered his PR from 6.36 seconds from a meet last month at Ocean Breeze to 6.33. He ran 6.44 in the trials before topping Pennsauken senior Elijah Jennings in the final. Jennings was 2nd in 6.56.
James had shared the Burlington County record with Willingboro’s Kenny Reynolds, who ran 6.36 at 1986 Easterns at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym.

That 6.33 might be No. 2 in South Jersey this year but it’s No. 3 in the U.S., according to the MileSplit database. Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran U.S. No. 1 and state-record 6.18 earlier this month at the Armory, and Tristan Wright of Franklin County High in Rocky Mount, Va., ran 6.29 in a meet earlier this month in Lynchburg, Va.

James’ time equals No. 10 in state history and is No. 5 in South Jersey history, behind Dwyer; Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd, who ran 6.26 en route to a 6.74 for 60 meters at 2011 Armory Nationals and has spent the last eight years in the NFL; Camden’s Jamar Ervin, who ran 6.30 at the 2001 Archbishop Malloy Stanner Games at the Armory; and Olympic gold medalist Dennis Mitchell of Edgewood, who ran 6.31 at 1984 Easterns at the Jadwin.

Stockton sophomore Kayla Kass destroyed the school record in the 800 Saturday in Boston with a big indoor PR 2:16.01.

Kass raced at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University.

Kass was the NJAC champion last spring at 2:13.34 and set the school outdoor record of 2:12.07 in April in a meet at Widener University in Chester, Pa. But her indoor PR coming into this weekend was 2:18.46 from last year’s NJAC meet at Ocean Breeze, where she placed 2nd.

Stockton’s previous indoor 800 record is listed on their web site as 2:18.37, which Cassandra Hrusko ran on Feb. 6, 2016, in a meet at Ursinus University in Collegeville, Pa. But Ocean City graduate Ciera Granger ran 2:18.08 as a Stockton freshman at a meet at Ocean Breeze, 2 ½ weeks after Hrusko ran 2:18.37.

Way to keep that web site up to date, Stockton!

The NCAA Division 3 performance list hasn’t been updated yet, but it looks like Kass’s 2:16.01 is No. 9 in the country. Hopefully, TFRRS is faster updating their performance lists than Stockton.

Kass’s time is No. 1 in the NJAC this winter and fastest by an NJAC freshman or sophomore in six years, since Katie LaCapria of TCNJ ran 2:13.94 on the same track in 2018.

Junior John Santos is the latest Washington Township sprinter to enjoy a breakthrough race in the 55-meter dash.

Senior Ajani Dwyer broke the state record with his 6.18 at the Millrose Trials earlier this month, U.S. No. 1 hurdler Yashahya Brown ran N.J. No. 6 6.44 last month in a meet at the Armory and on Friday Santos ran a PR 6.48 in the Olympic-Tri-County Meet at the Bubble, which is No. 9 in the state this year.

There are nine sprinters who have run sub-6.50 this year in New Jersey and three of them are Washington Township athletes.

Dwyer of course is the Gloucester County record holder, and Brown and Santos are now No. 6 and No. 8 in county history. They’re No. 1, 2 and 4 in South Jersey, broken up only by Burlington City senior Malachi James, who ran 6.36 at Ocean Breeze last month.

Santos had a PR of 6.58 coming into this winter from his 3rd-place finish at South Jersey Group 4 sectionals at the Bubble last February.

He lowered it to 6.53 in the trials Friday before his breakthrough 6.48 in the final. Glassboro senior Brysheen Ferguson placed 2nd in a PR 6.56

Cinnaminson’s Austin Gabay ran the 2nd-fastest 3,000 ever by a Duke runner Friday night at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center.

Racing nearly 200 of the top collegiate distance runners, Gabay placed 15th in 8:01.79, just 7 ½ seconds behind winner Gabriel Sanchez of Tennessee, who ran 7:54.36.

Gabay closed in 28.61 for his final 200, 58.18 for his final 400 and 2:01.86 for his final 800.

Gabay’s time is No. 2 in Duke history behind only Nick Dahl, who ran 7:59.84 in 2022. It was the first 3,000 Gabay has ever run in high school or college.

The time is also No. 3 ever by a South Jersey runner. Ford Palmer of Absegami ran 7:57.65 at the Columbia East-West Challenge at the Armory in 2017, and Samuel Gerstenbacher, a Schalick graduate who was a multiple NCAA Division 2 All-America at Elizabethtown, ran 8:01.24 as a post-collegian in February in Boston.

Gabay opened in 2:10.10 through 800 meters and came through 1600 in 4:21.71 and then ran his next three 400s in 65.52, 64.75 and 61.23 before closing in 28.61.

Yashahya Brown continued chasing the state hurdles record Friday, improving his No. 3 time in state history at the Olympic and Tri-County conference meet at the Bubble.

Brown, a Washington Township senior, lowered his U.S.-leading time in the 55-meter highs from 7.13 to 7.11. He had run 7.13 last month at the Armory.

His time is No. 15 in U.S. history.

Brown is now just 4-100ths of a second off the state record of 7.07, set by East Orange’s Cory Poole at 2017 Armory Nationals, and just 1-100th of a second off the South Jersey record of 7.10, set at 201 Armory Nationals.

Haddonfield junior Rebecca Hoover continues climbing the South Jersey all-time pole vault lists thanks to her first 12-foot clearance Monday at the Bubble.

Hoover increased her PR from 11-9 to 12-0. Series information not available. Her 12-0 clearance movres her into a tie for No. 4 in South Jersey history both on the all-time indoor list and the all-conditions list.

She broke her own Camden County indoor record and tied the overall Camden County record, set by Fiona Basewitz at the 2021 Meet of Champions in South Plainfield. Before Hoover cleared 11-6 in her first meet of the year at the Armory, the Camden County indoor record was 11-2 by Audubon’s Sarah Parr from a meet in Norristown, Pa., February of 2020.

Two wins, two PRs and three outstanding performances Wednesday evening for Ocean City junior Hercules Stewart at the Metropolitan Invitational at the Armory.

Stewart won the high jump with a lifetime-best 6-4 clearance, won the triple jump with a 44-foot jump and placed 2nd in the long jump with a PR 21-2, finishing 6 ½ inches behind Piscataway senior Skylar McGhee, who jumped 21-8 ½.

Stewart had a high jump PR of 5-10 a month ago. He cleared 6-2 in his season opener, the Marine Corps Classic at the Armory, before clearing the bar at 6-4 Wednesday on his 3rd and final attempt. He was clean at 5-8 and 5-10, made 6-0 on his 2nd try and 6-2 on his 1st.

That 6-4 ties the Cape May County record shared by three other Ocean City jumpers. It was originally set by Ben Marple in 1995 and matched by Jim O’Connor in 2011 and Ryan Givens in 2014.

Stewart shares the No. 2 mark in South Jersey behind Rancocas Valley senior David Godbolt, who cleared 6-6 last month at the Armory. Willingboro’s Tra’san Adam, Highland’s Jayden De Leon and Washington Township’s Carson Thomas have also cleared 6-4.

Stewart is already No. 4 in the state in the triple jump with a 45-0 last week at the South Jersey Track Coaches Association meet at Ocean Breeze. That 45-0 is No. 12 in South Jersey history and also a Cape May County record. The previous mark was 43-8 ½ by Ocean City’s Dan Givens at this meet in 2022.

His triple jump series included five jumps of at least 43 feet, including the winning 44-0 on his 2nd attempt. He averaged 43-3 ½ on his five legal jumps, and that average would have won the meet. Ethan Gutierrez of Monroe-Woodbury, N.Y., was 2nd with a 43-1.

In the long jump, Stewart topped his previous PR of 20-4 ¾ from Ocean Breeze last week. That 21-2 is 11 inches shy of Givens’ county record of 22-1 from 2015 and it’s No. 2 in South Jersey this year, behind only Moorestown’s Rece Englehart, who jumped 22-5 at a meet at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., earlier this month in his first lifetime indoor long jump competition.
