Cherokee boys run sub-18 in 4-mile relay, Winslow’s Cinniya Robinson 4th in freshman 400 on Day of Boston Nationals!!!!!!

The Cherokee boys ran the 3rd-fastest indoor 4-mile relay in South Jersey history and fastest in 13 years Thursday night on Day 1 of Boston Nationals at the TRACK.

Senior Robert Poplau, junior Liam Tindall, freshman Benjamin Realley and senior Nick Kuenkel, ran 17:54.59, becoming the first South Jersey school other than Haddonfield to run sub-18.

Because of an officiating error, the third legs all ran seven laps and the anchors all ran nine. And, no, this was not an NJSIAA meet. Apparently there are officials in other states as well that don’t know how to count.

Haddonfield set the South Jersey record at 17:22.12 in 2010 at New York Nationals and then ran 17:45.90 also at the Armory a year later. The Bulldogs also ran 17:55.70 in 2018.

Also on Day 1 in Boston, Winslow’s Cinniya Robinson placed 4th in the freshman 400 in 57.20, just off her PR of 57.05 that she ran at the Armory when she placed 2nd at Easterns.

Kingsway’s Stone Caraccio runs big 800 PR, up to 4th on all-time Monmouth list!!!!!!

Kingsway’s Stone Caraccio, a Monmouth junior, ran an 800 PR at the IC4A Championships over the weekend in Boston, placing 5th in 1:50.37.

Caraccio’s previous indoor PR was a 1:51.62 one day earlier in the IC4A trials. His indoor PR before the weekend was 1:52.01 from a meet in February 2022 at Boston University. He’s run 1:50.83 outdoors – at a meet at Princeton in May 2022. That’s No. 6 in Monmouth history outdoors.

Caraccio’s 1:50.37 is 4th-fastest in Monmouth history and fastest since Chris Marco of Toms River North ran 1:50.07 at a meet in Boston in 2018.

Caraccio’s PR at Kingsway was 1:54.53 indoors at Ocean Breeze in the winter of 2020, a couple weeks before the shutdown. His time is fastest by a Gloucester County alum since Fred Sharpe of Paulsboro ran 1:48.26 in Santry, Ireland, in 2003.

Ten South Jersey half-milers have run sub-1:50, most recently Pleasantville grad Gabriel Moronta, who ran 1:49.33 outdoors in College Station, Texas, in 2021, and before that Jaymes Dennison of Penns Grove, who ran 1:47.63 outdoors in Tempe, Ariz., in 2017.

If you’re confused, don’t worry about it. I’m confused, too.

But that’s what happens when you’re dealing with two different national high school championship meets that used to be one meet and one of the meets is being held this year where the other one was held last year.

It’s hard to untangle the history of indoor national meets. Neither current meet has any sort of history on its web site and as sponsors and venues change, the whole thing just becomes a jumbled mess. If you’re trying to trace the lineage of each meet, it’s impossible.

As far as I can tell, the first national indoor high school meet was the Pathmark National Scholastic Indoors held at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym in 1984. It moved to Yale in 1986 and remained at Yale in 1987 but with a different name – National Scholastic Indoor Championships without a title sponsor.

After three years at Yale, the meet move to Navy in Annapolis, Md., for one year, and then Syracuse for six years – the first five with Day 1 at Manley Fieldhouse and Day 2 at the Carrier Dome.

In 1996, the meet moved to Boston for the first time and remained there for three years  before moving to Ohio State in 1999 and for the first time being known as the Nike Indoor Classic.

After a year in Columbus, it seems to have resurfaced in 2000 with a new name and a new home – the New Balance Scholastic Championships at the Armory in New York.

In 2001, it was once again known as Nike Indoor Classic, now at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., outside Washington, D.C.

After three years with one meet in Landover, it seems that 2004 was the first year nationals split into two meets.  Nike was at Prince George’s and National Scholastic was at the Armory. That setup remained until 2009, when Nike moved to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

As far as I can tell there was only one meet in 2011, and it was called New Balance Nationals and was at the Armory. The one-meet setup appears to have continued through 2019 and then there were no meets in 2020 thanks to COVID and it appears the only meet in 2021 was something called adidas Indoor Nationals in Virginia Beach.

In 2022, all three meets were held – adidas in Virginia Beach, New Balance at the Armory and Nike a few miles away at Ocean Breeze. That created a comical situation where top athletes would shuttle between the two venues, racking up multiple All-America honors in the same event (and multiple backpacks!).

Looks like there are three meets again this year – although New Balance is now at the Reggie Lewis Center Friday and Saturday and then at THE TRACK in Boston on Sunday, and Nike – which was at Ocean Breeze last year – is now at the Armory. So the Armory will have hosted a national meet in each of the last two years … but not the same meet.

Anyway, it all seems absurd but at least high school athletes are getting another chance to compete against elite competition before outdoors starts next month.

It looks like South Jersey athletes are split between Boston and New York, so we’ll be keeping an eye on both meets all weekend.

Buena’s Maria Muzzarelli of Widener headed for NCAA Division 3 Championships!!!!!!

Widener junior Maria Muzzarelli from Buena is on her way to NCAA Division 3 nationals to compete in the 60-meter dash.

Muzzarelli is the No. 8 seed in the 60 thanks to her school-record and personal-best 7.63 to win the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship final at Alvernia-Flynn PLEX in Reading, Pa., two weeks ago. Her previous PR was a 7.69 in January at a meet at the Armory. In addition to the school record at 60 meters, Muzzarelli is No. 2 in the 200 [25.67]. Outdoors, she’s No. 2 in the 100 [12.09] and 200 [25.17] and No. 4 in the long jump [17-6 ¾] and also ran on the school record 4-by-100, which ran 47.95 in May.

The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled to begin Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. Qualifying in the women’s 60 meters is scheduled for 2 p.n. Friday with the final at 3:25 p.m. Saturday.

At Buena, Muzzarelli placed 4th in the 55 at Group 2 states at the Bubble in February 2020 before losing her outdoor season to the COVID shutdown. She was 7th in the 100 as a senior at outdoor states at Pennsauken.

For Rowan, junior Nevaeh Lorjuste from Triton qualified in the 400 [56.82]. Also, the Profs’ 1,600-meter relay team qualified with its 3:49,78 with an expected lineup of sophomore Molly Lodge of Woodstown, junior Jasmine Pope from Pennsauken, senior Kathleen Pederson of Hillsborough and Lorjuste.

Stockton sophomore Kayla Kass from Bayonne is the No. 7 seed in the 800 with her 2:12.32 at the AARTFC meet in Rochester last weekend.

In the men’s meet, Rowan – ranked 8th nationally in NCAA Division 3 – qualified four hurdlers – sophomore Nwaku Nkrumah from Teaneck is the No. 2 seed at 7.93, junior Marquise Young from Sterling is No. 4 seed at 7.96 and freshman Jacob Kiyler from North Plainfield and sophomore Jason Agyemang from Parsippany also qualified with top-20 times across NCAA Division 3.

Freshman Damarion Potts from South Brunswick qualified in both the high jump and long jump, and Amara Conte from Ferris High in Jersey City is seeded 12th in the 400 at 47.80. Junior Nana Agyemang will join Potts in the long jump. And Rowan’s 4-by-4 is No. 2 seed at 3:12.39 with a likely lineup of Jason Agyemang, Young, Nana Agyemang and Conte.

Sofia Day races to 4th-fastest 800 time in South Jersey history at Meet of Champions!!!!!!!!

Mainland junior Sofia Day ran the 4th-fastest 800 in South Jersey history Sunday at the Meet of Champions, placing 4th in 2:12.05 at Ocean Breeze.

She lowered her own Atlantic County record of 2:13.96 from Ocean Breeze in December and moved into the No. 23 spot on the U.S. scholastic list, one spot behind Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally, who ran 2:11.85 at Ocean Breeze last month.

The race produced six of the 21-fastest times in meet history and the fastest times for every place from 1st through 8th. Day’s time is 13th-fastest in the meet’s 45-year history. The previous-fastest 4th-place time was just last year, when Cherokee’s Kelsey Niglio ran 2:14.27 for 4th place.

Clemmie Lilly of Rumson-Fair Haven won the race in 2:08.30, breaking the meet record of 2:08.81 set in 2018 by Victoria Vanriele of Governor Livingston.

The only faster time Meet of Champions time by a South Jersey runner came 14 years ago, when Megan Tiernan of Washington Township won the 800 in 2:11.53. Tiernan went on to place 2nd at Armory Nationals but never ran outdoor track and never ran in college, opting instead to play lacrosse for Washington Township and then at Temple.

Day will race the 800 at Boston Nationals this weekend.

Haddonfield sophomore Riley Austin and Kingsway senior Kay Wiscount also ran well in the M-of-C 800, Austin in 11th place in 2:18.53 and Wiscount 13th in 2:18.79.

For Wiscount, it’s been quite a breakthrough season. Her 800 PR last winter was 2:33.53 in a meet at the Bubble and this past spring she ran 2:24.98 in a meet at Cherokee. But she’s now PR’d five times this winter  2:23.88 in Collegeville in late January, 2:22.01 at the Bubble two days later, 2:20.61 at sectionals, 2:20.26 at states and now 2:18.79 at Meet of Champs. So she’s dropped her PR more than six seconds in the last six weeks.

Shaelan McNally runs 5th-fastest 1,600 in South Jersey history, one of only 9 girls in NJ history to run sub-2:12 and sub-4:53!!!!!!!!

Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally ran the 5th-fastest 1,600 in South Jersey history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

McNally placed 3rd in 4:52.90, the 9th-fastest time in meet history and 3rd-fastest ever by a South Jersey girl, behind 1983 winner Michelle Rowen of Washington Township [4:48.5 hand-timed] and Haddonfield’s Briana Gess, who placed 3rd in 2016 in 4:51.60.

McNally negative-split the race, out in 72.68 and 2:28.69 and back in 75.46 and 2:24.22, with a final lap of 32.76.

It’s been quite a stretch for McNally, who never broke five minutes for 1,600 meters indoors or outdoors until Feb. 16, when she ran 4:57.06 at the Parochial A state meet at the Bubble. Before that, he PR was an outdoor 5:01.44 last May in a meet at Delsea. So she’s dropped her PR almost nine seconds in three weeks.

She also ran 2:11.85 late last month at Ocean Breeze Elite, 3rd-fastest in South Jersey history. She’s now one of only nine girls in state history (and one of two from South Jersey) to run sub-2:12 and sub-4:53:

Erin Donohue [Haddonfield], 2001 [2:10.0, 4:49.46y]
Molly McNamara [Red Bank Catholic], 2011 [2:11.82, 4:48.44]
Ajee Wilson [Neptune], 2011 [2:04.13, 4:47.80y]
Catherine Pagano [Northern Highlands], 2015 [2:09.80, 4:48.97]

Camryn Wennersten [Ridgewood], 2022 [2:09.32, 4:43.96y]
Kaleigh Gunsiorowski [Union Catholic], 2023 [2:11.20, 4:50.69y]
Paige Sheppard [Union Catholic], 2024 [2:09.79, 4:48.13]
Shaelan McNally [Paul VI], 2024 [2:11.85, 4:52.90]

McNally, who’s from Haddon Heights, will race the two-mile at Boston Nationals this weekend. She has a PR of 10:48.08 from outdoor states last spring at Franklin Township. She ran 10:59.26 in a Ocean Breeze in January.

Cherokee senior Kerry O’Day also had a big race, placing 7th with a PR 4:58.54, 6th-fastest in Burlington County history. O’Day, like McNally, never broke 5:00 until last month. She PR’d with a 4:59.23 at states at the Bubble last month before her 4:58.54 on Sunday. Cherokee is entered in the distance medley, 4-by-8 and 4-by-mile at Boston Nationals.

Winslow boys run 6th-fastest 4×4 in South Jersey history at Meet of Champions, Deptford shatters Gloucester County record!!!!!!

Winslow senior Darrell Jackson Jr. and seniors Jayden Poteat, Dominic Bassey and Chukwuemeka Ajaegbulemh ran the 6th-fastest 4-by-400 in South Jersey indoor history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Winslow placed 3rd in 3:18.25, the 5th-fastest time in the meet’s 55-year history and 2nd-fastest ever by a South Jersey school. It’s also No. 5 nationally, according to the MileSplit national database.

Jackson Jr. overcame some nagging injuries to post a 51.51 leadoff, Poteat split 49.02 to move the Eagles into 3rd place, Bassey – who broke the Camden County 800 record earlier in the day – followed with a 48.94 split and Ajaegbulemh anchored in 48.79.

The only faster time by a South Jersey school in M-of-C history is Pennsauken’s 3:15.83 meet record from last year. That’s also the only

Winslow broke its own 21-year-old school record of 3:18.46 set in 2003 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational with the team of Reuben McCoy, Dante Freeman, Khaliq Price and Duan Freeman. That was in the same race Vineland ran 3:17.15, which is No. 4 in South Jersey history. That Vineland team consisted of Shannon Sherrer, Marcus Lee, Dale Coleman and Schafer Sherrer.

Toms River North won the race Sunday in 3:17.98 and St. Peter’s Prep was 2nd in 3:18.13. The top three teams in the race are No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 in the U.S. this year.

Deptford and Timber Creek also ran strong in the 4-by-4 Sunday, Deptford out of the seeded heat, Timber Creek in the previous section.

For Deptford, seniors Darryl Wayman and Christian Berry and sophomores Kareem Brown and David Pearson ran 3:22.51 to place 5th and break a nine-year-old Gloucester County record. Wayman [50.16], Berry [50.92], Brown [50.03] and Pearson [51.41] broke the county record of 3:22.64 that Walter Victor, Anthony Hernandez, Shaquille Dixon and Eric Hill ran at 2015 Armory Nationals.

Timber Creek placed 6th in 3:22.71.Senior Nasir Ali anchored in 48.90 after the first three legs were handled by senior Isiah Marcellus [50.15], junior Kysim Khan [51.41] and senior Robert Wakefield [52.27].

Also, Delsea seniors Xavier Wyatt, Dante McGrenehan and Christian Langston and sophomore Matthew Littlehales ran 3:26.34, the Crusaders’ fastest indoor 4-by-4 since the 2007 team ran 3:25.19 at the M-of-C at the Bubble.

This weekend, Winslow will run a sprint medley at Boston Nationals, and Deptford will run the 4-by-2 and 4-by-4 at Boston Nationals.

SMOKING HOT MEET OF CHAMPIONS 800: Robert Poplau smashes Burlington County record, Chris Manzo runs all-time S.J. #9, Dominic Bassey smashes Camden County record, Daniel Torres drops huge PR!!!!!!

Cherokee senior Robert Poplau shattered a 23-year-old Burlington County record Sunday when he placed 3rd in the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze in 1:53.45.

Poplau broke the hand-timed record of 1:54.8 set by Willingboro’s Marvin Lewis at 2001 Easterns at the Armory. The previous fastest FAT time was Zach McBride’s 1:55.14 a year later, also at Easterns at the Armory. Lewis’s time would convert to about 1:55.04 FAT.

Poplau’s previous PR was a 1:54.64 two weeks ago when he won the state Group 4 title at the Bubble. He ran 1:56.31 last spring. Poplau broke the 25-year-old Cherokee record of 1:56.02 set in 1999 by Dave Sitzer at states last month.

That 1:53.45 is also No. 5 in South Jersey history behind three Pleasantville runners – the Clark twins and Gabriel Moronta – and Kingsway’s Derrell Manhertz.

And it’s also 5th-fastest ever by a South Jersey runner at the Meet of Champions behind the same four half-milers.

Morris Knolls junior Luke Schagelin won the race in 1:51.93 and Passaic County Tech senior Raynier Galvez was 2nd in 1:53.19.

Egg Harbor senior Christopher Manzo placed 6th in 1:54.73, No. 9 in South Jersey history. He had just PR’d at 1:55.74 at the state Group 4 meet. Outdoors he ran 1:55.93 last spring at the Meet of Champions.

Winslow junior Dominic Bassey and Washington Township senior Daniel Torres – both racing out of the unseeded heat – also finished in the top 10 and ran big PRs. They were the top two finishers in the first of two sections.

Bassey smashed the Camden County indoor 800 record of 1:55.92 set by Pennsauken’s Bryce Tucker in a SJTCA meet last winter at Ocean Breeze. He was the No. 2 underclassman overall and lowered his PR from 1:56.66 at last year’s Easterns to 1:55.33 and placed 9th overall, No. 9 in South Jersey history.

Bassey is also the fastest South Jersey underclassman since Moronta ran 1:54.41 at the 2019 Meet of Champions at the Bubble, and he’s the No. 3 underclassman in New Jersey this year.

Torres – in his first indoor season – dropped his PR a whopping 2 ½ seconds from 1:59.15 at a SJTCA meet at the Bubble to 1:56.66 and took 10th overall.

Peyton Shute places 2nd in Meet of Champions with 3rd-fastest 3,200 in S.J. history, Nick Kuenkel 3rd with 6th-fastest time, Elijah Forrest just behind them in 4th!!!!!!

Peyton Shute ran the 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history and smashed the Gloucester County record Sunday at the Meet of Champions.

Shute ran 9:05.99 and placed 2nd to Ridgewood junior Luke Pash, who won the race at Ocean Breeze in 8:59.77 – No. 4 in the U.S. this year, according to the MileSplit national database.

The only faster times in South Jersey history were recorded by Haddonfield’s Jonathan Vitez, who ran 8:58.81 to win the 2010 Meet of Champions at the Bubble of all places and Cinnaminson’s Austin Gabay, who ran 9:00.27 to place 3rd in the 2020 Meet of Champs at Ocean Breeze.

Shute’s time is No. 11 nationally this year and breaks the Gloucester County record of 9:12.05 set by Delsea’s Andrew Littlehales at the 2022 Meet of Champions at the Bubble. Shute’s previous indoor PR was 9:13.90. He ran 9:11.11 in May outdoors at Deptford.

By 1,600 meters into the race, Pash, Shute, Cherokee senior Nick Kuenkel and Collingswood senior Elijah Forrest had gapped the rest of the field in the 2nd race in a two-section final. With 600 to go, Pash, Shute and Kuenkel had built a small lead over Forrest, who had a 50-meter lead over the rest of the pack.

Pash used a 31.95-second 14th lap to separate from Shute, and Shute closed in 32.42 on the final lap to nudge ahead of Kuenkel for 2nd.

Pash closed in 2:08.29 for his final 800, 63.09 for his final 400 and 31.06 for his final lap. Shute closed in 2:14.35, 66.84 and 32.42; Kuenkel in 2:16.49, 68.98 and 34.51; and Forrest in 2:19.82, 70.10 and 34.27.

Kuenkel’s time is No. 2 in Burlington County history behind Gabay’s 9:00.27, and Forrest’s time is No. 8 in Camden County history.

Eleven of the first 12 finishers PR’d, including Ocean City senior Matt Hoffman, who placed 10th in 9:20.98 – a Cape May County record.

Shute, Kuenkel and Forrest ran the 3rd-, 6th- and 13th-fastest times ever by South Jersey runners in an indoor Meet of Champions.

Shute, Kuenkel and Forrest are all entered in the two-mile at Boston Nationals this weekend, and Shute is also entered in the mile.

Liliah Gordon runs 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history at Meet of Champions!!!!!!

Northern Burlington’s Liliah Gordon ran the 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Gordon ran 10:26.49 and placed 2nd to Middletown South senior Rosemary Shay, who won by just 5-100ths of a second in 10:26.44 a race that produced two of the six-fastest times in meet history.

The only South Jersey girls to run faster than Gordon indoors are Ocean City’s Brittany Sedberry in 2006 and Cherokee’s Megan Lacy in 2011.

Sedberry ran a then-state-record 10:19.30 for the full two miles at the 2006 Hall of Fame Classic at the Armory, which converts to 10:15.71 for 3,200 meters. Five years later at Armory Nationals on the same track, Lacy ran 10:27.13 for two miles, which converts to 10:23.49 for 3,200 meters.

Gordon’s time is not only the fastest by a South Jersey girl in 13 years, it’s the fastest ever by a South Jersey in state competition – sectionals, states or Meet of Champions. The previous record for a state-affiliated meet was Lacy’s 10:31.06 at the 2012 Meet of Champions at the Bubble.

Gordon’s time is No. 14 in state history and No. 2 on the all-time Burlington County list, behind only Lacy.

Shay and Gordon ran virtually neck and neck almost the entire race, and it was a two-runner race over the last 1,000 meters. Gordon closed in 74.21 and 35.73 but Shay closed in 72.94 and 34.40 and was inches ahead at the finish line. Nobody else was within 50 meters.

Gordon’s previous PR was 10:33.78 from the state Group 3 meet at the Bubble, when she defeated Shay.

The Villanova-bound Shay lowered her PR from 10:39.31, which she ran at the state Group 3 meet behind Gordon.

Cherokee senior Kerry O’Day and Ocean City junior Maeve Smith also both ran well under 11 minutes, O’Day in 8th in 10:51.65 and Smith just behind in 9th in 10:52.82.
