Timber Creek’s Naylah Jones runs one of the fastest 100s in South Jersey history!!!!!!

Timber Creek’s Naylah Jones opened her senior outdoor season with the 7th-fastest 100 time in South Jersey history.

Jones ran 11.64 at Fast Times at Cherokee High, with junior teammate Ryan Jennings 2nd in 11.93. So far, they’re the only New Jersey girls under 12 seconds. No wind information was recorded.

Jones lowered her from 10.73 from her win at the Meet of Champions at Franklin in June. She ran 6.93 indoors for 55 meters, 7th-fastest in state history, and set a South Jersey 200 record of 24.15 (later broken when Pennsauken’s Sianni Wynn ran 24.00 at the Meet of Champions).

Jones’ 11.64 is fastest by any New Jersey sprinter since Manchester’s Jada Ellis, now at Rutgers, ran 11.57 at the 2021 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield. It’s fastest by a South Jersey girl since Dennisha Page of Woodrow Wilson, now at Tennessee, ran 11.63 in the prelims of the 2019 Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.

Jennings ran within 1-100th of a second of her PR of 11.92, which she ran at the state Group 3 meet at Delsea, where she placed 2nd to Jones.

Jones’ time is 9th-fastest ever recorded by a South Jersey alumni at 100 meters:

Hammonton’s Anthony Liakhnovich added to Penn Relays shot put field!!!!!!

After initially being omitted when the Penn Relays high school shot put field was announced, Hammonton junior Anthony Liakhnovich now appears on the entry list for the world’s oldest and largest annual track meet.

The high school invitational fields for the 125th annual Penn Relays were initially announced on April 9, and Delsea junior was the only South Jersey thrower listed. Glassboro senior Damere Lassiter, who qualified with a 60-1 indoors, chose the discus instead of the shot put.

But the entry list now shows Liakhnovich added at the bottom as a 19th competitor. He’s one of three New Jersey throwers in the event. Joshua Huisman of St. Rose is the top seed with a 67-7 at the indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze, and he went on to place 2nd in both indoor national meets.

Liakhnovich hadn’t thrown 50 feet before the state relays indoors in January. But he threw 56-10 ¼ in a meet at Cherokee in mid-January and then opened the outdoor season with a 59-10 at the Rebel Relays in Howell on April 6 – the first Saturday of the season and the day before the qualifying window closed.

That mark should have easily gotten Liakhnovich into Penn. He added a 61-2 in a dual meet at Oakcrest on Wednesday.

Liakhnovich’s 59-10 ¼ is No. 3 in Atlantic County history, only 18 inches off the county record of 61-4 set by Egg Harbor Township’s Kofi Yamoah at the 2013 South Jersey Invitational at Buena.

The shot put is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The Penn Relays runs Thursday, April 18, through Saturday, April 20, at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in West Philadelphia.

All the throws at the Penn Relays are located across the Northeast Corridor railroad tracks on the grass fields alongside the Schuylkill Expressway south of South Street.

Nia Ali now among the best in the world in a 2nd event!!!!!!

Pleasantville’s Nia Ali, one of the fastest hurdlers in world history, continues to focus on the sprints this spring heading into the Olympic Trials and she ran one of the fastest 100-meter dashes ever by a New Jersey high school alum this weekend in Gainesville.

Competing in the Olympic Development 100 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track, Ali ran a lifetime-best 11.21 with a legal 1.2 meters-per-second tailwind. Earlier, she ran the fastest 100-meter hurdles time in the world this year at 12.44 into a 0.8 meters-per-second headwind.

Ali’s 11.21 is 2nd-fastest ever by a South Jersey woman, behind only Olympic gold medalist English Gardcner’s 10.74 in Eugene in 2016. It’s also No. 5 on the all-time New Jersey list.

Her previous 100 PR was an 11.41 last month at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational at Cobb Stadium at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. That was her first open 100-meter dash on record going back to her days at Pleasantville High School.

Ali’s 11.21 is No. 25 in the world this year and No. 14 among U.S. women. She only placed 9th racing against some of the fastest women in history. Tamari Davis and Melissa Jefferson both ran 10.94, Davis winning in 10.932 over Jefferson’s 10.935. Those are the No. 2 and 3 times in the world this year.

World No. 1 is Tennessee’s Jacious Sears, who ran 10.77 in the college 100 at the same meet. Her teammate, Woodrow Wilson graduate Dennisha Page, ran 11.27 earlier this month in a meet in Knoxville, which Ali bumped from 2nd on the all-time South Jersey list to 3rd.

Ali is now only the 5th woman in world history to run as fast as 11.21 in the 100 and 12.30 in the high hurdles. The only other U.S. woman to achieve that speedy double is Briana McNeal, the 2016 Olympic hurdles champ.

MALACHI JAMES RACES TO ONE OF THE FASTEST SPRINT DOUBLES IN NEW JERSEY HISTORY IN 2024 OPENER!!!!!!!!

Malachi James opened his 2024 season with one of the fastest sprint doubles in state history.

James, who broke Meet of Champions recores in both the 55 and 200 indoors and placed 2nd in the 200 at Armory Nationals, ran 10.40 for 100 meters and 21.13 for 200 meters Sunday at the USATF New York Youth Challenge Series Opener at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in Manhattan.

Both times were wind-legal, with a 1.3 meters-per-second tailwind in the 100 and a 1.6 in the 200.

The only sprinters in New Jersey history who’ve run that fast for both races are Rahway’s Danny Johnson, who ran 10.30 and 20.93 in 2001, and Franklin Township’s Mario Heslop, who ran 10.33 in 2019 and 20.74 in 2018.

Only Johnson did it at the same meet. He won the 100 and 200 at the 2001 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield with 10.30 and 20.93.

James was not pushed in either race. Second-place times were pedestrian 11.45 and 22.63. And he  ran those times without starting blocks.

James’ 100 time is No. 7 in state history and No. 3 in South Jersey history and fastest in 14 years, since Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd ran 10.36 at South Jersey Group 3 sectionals at Egg Harbor.

His 200 time is tied for No. 7 in state history and also No. 3 in South Jersey history, behind  Olympic gold medalist Dennis Mitchell of Edgewood, who ran 21.06 at the Keebler Prep Championships in Elk Grove, Ill., in 1984, and Paul VI’s Antonio Tarantino, who ran 21.07 at

James’ previous PRs were 10.54 when he won the 2022 Meet of Champions at Franklin as a Willingboro sophomore and 21.28 when won the indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze this past March.

He broke the Burlington County 100-meter dash record of 10.45 set by James Townsend of Holy Cross when he won the 2003 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield. Townsend never ran another race. He already held the Burlington County overall 200 record with that 21.28 indoors, but he officially broke the outdoor record of 21.40 sst by Lenape’s Rob Gary when he won the 100 at the 1998 state Group 4 meet at South Plainfield.

Cornell’s Michael Mazero from Paul VI runs first sub-48 at Bucknell!!!!!!

Nice 400 PR Sunday at Bucknell from Michael Mazero, a Cornell sophomore from Mullica Hill and Paul VI.

Mazero ran 47.89 to win the second section of the 400-meter dash at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa., and his time held up for 5th-fastest overall out of nearly 100 runners in 15 sections.

Mazero’s previous PR was a 48.03 last April in a meet on his home track in Ithaca, N.Y. His 47.89 is No. 10 in the Ivy League so far this year.

Seven of the eight-fastest times came from the first heat. Mazero bumped all but the first four runners in the fast heat.

At Paul VI, Mazero ran 48.52 for 4th place at the 2021 Meet of Champions in South Plainfield.

Delsea grad Jason Nwosu continues assault on William & Mary record book with 3rd throws PR in three weeks!!!!!!

Jason Nwosu from Delsea continued his assault on the William and Mary record book this weekend with a personal-best in the discus a week after he recorded a PR in the shot and a few weeks after a PR in the hammer.

Competing at the Virginia Grand Prix at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Nwosu on Saturday placed 2nd in the discus with a 161-4 on his 3rd throw. His previous PR was a 157-10 last April in a meet at High Point, N.C.

The 161-4 moves him up from No. 11 to No. 8 on the all-time William and Mary performance list.

Nwosu also placed 3rd in the shot put with a 57-0 throw, which is less than a foot from his PR of 57-11 ¾ from last weekend at the Colonial Relays at his home facility in Williamsburg, Va. The 57-11 ¾ ranks 3rd in school history.

He also took 7th in the hammer throw at 179-10, just two feet off his PR of 181-11 from three weeks ago at a meet at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. That’s No. 11 in school history.

Nwosu is one inch off the William & Mary all-time top-10 in the hammer. If he throws 182-0, he’ll join Taylor Frenia [60-2 ½, 192-7, 191-11] and [K.J. Cook 57-0, 186-1, 215-8] as only the 3rd thrower ranked in the top-10 in school history in the shot, disc and hammer.

Pleasantville’s Nia Ali runs fastest 100-meter hurdles time in the world this year!!!!!!!!

Pleasantville’s Nia Ali ran the fastest 100-meter hurdles time in the world this year Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.

Ali, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2019 world champion, ran 12.44 to win the highs at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at Percy Beard Track on the University of Florida campus.

That’s her 7th-fastest time ever.

She edged Tonea Marshal, the runner-up to Ali at last year’s U.S. Championships in Eugene. Marshal’s 12.45 is No. 2 in the world this year.

In the trials, Marshal edged Ali, with both timed in 12.47 – Marshall was 12.466 and Ali 12.470. That was the 2nd-fastest time Ali has ever run that wasn’t in a final. She ran 12.43 in the semis at nationals in Eugene last summer.

Ali ranks 9th in world history with her 12.30 in Monaco this past July. That’s also No. 3 in U.S. history

Big long jump-hurdles double for Riverside’s Jamir Brown at Moorestown Invitational!!!!!!

Big day at the Moorestown Relays for Riverside senior Jamir Brown, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.34 and the long jump at 22-0.

Brown’s previous hurdles PR was a 14.66 as a sophomore competing for Delran when he placed 2nd at the state Group 2 meet at Franklin. He missed his long jump PR of 22-0 ¾ from last weekend’s Don Danser Relays at Rancocas Valley by less than an inch.

The 14.34 is fastest by a New Jersey Group 1 hurdler since 2019, when Palmyra’s Sam Aviles ran 14.07 at the Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.

It’s No. 3 so far this spring in South Jersey, behind Washington Township’s Yashahya Brown [14.12] and Williamstown’s Alexander Hollimon [14.25] from Fast Times at Cherokee on Saturday.

Brown’s 22-0 ¾ from last weekend is the top long jump in South Jersey this year.

Brown was the No. 2 sophomore intermediate hurdler in New Jersey at 54.52 from West Philly Nationals as a Delran sophomore, but he hasn’t run a 400IH since that race nearly two years ago.

Washington Township’s Ajani Dwyer opens 2024 season with fastest 100 by S.J. sprinter in 14 years!!!!!!

Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran the 6th-fastest 100-meter dash in South Jersey history Saturday at Fast Times at Cherokee High.

Dwyer edge Robbinsville’s Maxim Rychkov by 2-100ths of a second, Dwyer in 10:48 and Rychkov in 10.50.

Dwyer was a 1st-time sprinter last spring but only competed in a handful of meets and missed sectionals, states and the Meet of Champions. He ran 10.60 to win the Gloucester County title in Deptford and also had a 200 best of 21.47.

Indoors, he ran a state-record 6.18 for 55 meters and a South Jersey-record 20.25 for 200 meters but again missed the end of the season with an injjury.

Three other sprinters ran sub-11 – Washington Township junior John Santos was 3rd in 10.91, Cherokee senior Ryan Bender 4th in 10.94 and Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown – the state hurdles record holder indoors – was 5th in 10.96.

There was no wind reading taken in his race, so some performance lists may not include his performance.

Dwyer’s time is No. 15 in state history and 1-100th of a second off the Gloucester County record of 10.47 set 15 years ago by Glassboro’s James Brown at the 2009 South Jersey Group 1 sectionals at Egg Harbor Township.

It’s fastest by a South Jersey sprinter in 14 years, since Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd ran 10.36 at the 2010 South Jersey Group 3 sectionals, also at Egg Harbor Township.
