East Stroudsburg sophomore Payton Falkenstein, a Burlington Township graduate, won her 1st conference title Saturday at the PSAC Championships.

Falkenstein ran an indoor PR 17:51.68 to win the 5,000 meters at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at Lehigh’s Rauch Fieldhouse in Bethlehem.

Falkenstein, Slippery Rock junior Ruthie Hughes and Edinboro junior Kate Szep were together in the lead pack much of the race, with Hughes leading and Szep 2nd. Falkenstein moved into 2nd with three laps to go and took the lead for good on the final lap, closing in 34.80.

She finished seven meters ahead of Hughes, who was 2nd in 17:53.16. Szep finished 3rd in 18:02.34.

Falkenstein is East Stroudsburg’s 1st conference champ at 5,000 meters in 32 years, since Jenn Moyer won the 5 and 10K at the 1993 meet.

Her time is No. 8 in school history indoors.

Falkenstein is also No. 8 on the all-time East Stroudsburg outdoor list with her 17:36.93 from a meet this past April at Bucknell. Three spots above her is Northern Burlington graduate Laura Mason, who ran 17:23.24 in 1985 and went on to compete in the 1992 Olympic Trials at 10,000 meters.

Allison Colflesh ran a huge 800 PR Saturday and placed 2nd in the Atlantic 10 Championships in Virginia Beach.

Colflesh, a Haddonfield graduate and Richmond senior, lowered her PR from 2:15.60 in the trials all the way down to 2:12.99, and she finished 2nd to teammate Molly Flanagan, who ran 2:11.97.

Colflesh‘s PR before Friday’s trials was 2:15.66 from an outdoor meet last April in Newport News, Va. Her indoor PR was 2:18.87i n Lexington, Va., in January 2024.

At Haddonfield, Colflesh had PRs of 2:14.77 outdoors from her win at 2021 Group 2 sectionals at Delsea and 2:19.29 indoors from a meet in February of 2020 at Ocean Breeze.

Colflesh’s sister Lindsay, also a senior at Richmond, didn’t make the final but has a PR of 2:12.87 from an outdoor meet in 2023 at Princeton.

Pleasantville’s Gabriel Moronta, a senior at South Florida, won the 400 at the American Conference Championships Saturday in a speedy 46.24.

Moronta led all qualifiers in Friday’s trials with a 46.91 at Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama before running away from the field in the final.

Moronta just ran an indoor PR and school-record 46.04 earlier this month in a meet in Boston. That’s No. 22 in NCAA Division 1. His outdoor PR is a school-record 45.81 from last year’s American Conference meet in San Antonio.

Moronta also has PRs of 1:49.33 for 800 meters and 51.38 in the intermediates, both while he was competing for Mississippi State.

South Florida is the top seed in the 4-by-4 later Saturday with its school-record 3:07.59 in Boston earlier this month. Moronta is listed as the second leg.

Lumberton’s Greg Foster won his 4th Heps long jump title Saturday afternoon and had the three-best jumps of the competition at the Ivy League Heptagonal Champiuonships at Cornell’s legendary Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y.

Foster, a junior at Princeton, had. 24-6 ½ on his 1st jump, a 24-5 ½ on his 3rd and a 24-10 ½ on his 5th. He fouled every even-numbered attempt.

Foster is competing this winter for the first time since last winter after undergoing foot surgery after last year’s indoor season.

Foster didn’t triple jump this weekend at Heps but he did race in the 60-meter hurdles trials immediately after concluding the long jump and recorded a large-Q qualifier for Sunday’s final with a 7.97. His PR is 7.89, which he’s hit three times.

Sterling graduate Jenovia Logan recorded the 2nd-best high jump clearance in Rutgers history Saturday and the 4th-best ever by a South Jersey high school graduate at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis.

Logan, who had a high school PR of 5-6 ½, cleared 5-10 ¾ on her 3rd attempt, extending her PR from 5-10 from a meet at the Armory in December.

She trails only Courteney Campbell in Rutgers history. Campbell cvleared 5-11 ½ at the 2022 Rutgers Open at the Armory. Rhonda Rogombe also cleared 5-10 ¾ in a meet in Piscataway in January of 2016.

In South Jersey history, the only jumpers to go higher are Paul VI graduate Priscilla Frederick [6-3 in Toronto in 2015], Holy Cross graduate MaryBeth Labosky [6-1 ½ in Lawrence, Kans., in 1992] and Willingboro graduate Kenady Wilson [6-0 ¾ in Greensboro in 2022].

Logan cleared 5-5 ¾ on her 1st attempt, 5-7 ¾ on her 3rd, 5-9 ¾ on her 2nd and 5-10 ¾ on her 3rd. She took three shots at 6-0.

 

The NJSIAA continues to put out meet programs that are embarrassing in the number of errors that are in there every year and are never fixed.

I wanted to see how quickly I could find 10 mistakes in the boys Meet of Champions program, and it was eight minutes.

The boys program is here and it actually covers state relays, sectionals, states and the Meet of Champions. The girls program is here. But I focused only on the boys program and only on the Meet of Champions section.

If I had  the time I’m sure I could have found a combined 100 errors in the two programs. I stuck to one small section and found 10 without even trying:

1) In the list of winners, 1973 60-yard dash winner John Chambers of Neptune is listed as “John Champers.”

2) The program never indicates that the 55 was a 60 from 1969 through 1979.

3) The 2016 55 winner fron South Plainfield, Marteese Jones, is listed as “Martees Jones.”

4) The list of 400 winners starts with 1989. Where are the 1969 through 1988 winners? I eventually found them under the 200-meter dash list. Which goes from 400 winners to 200 winners in the middle.

5)  The 2000 400 winner, Lenape’s Mohamad Kanu, has his last name spelled “Kann.”

6) The 2015 800 winner Hazem Miawad is listed as “Miawad Hazem.”

7) The 2007 1,600 winner Dennie Waite of Red Bank is listed as “Dennie Wait.”

8) The 1986 hurdles winner, Hackensack’s Jerome Pemberton, is listed as “Jerry Pemberton.” That’s not his name. Nobody ever called him Jerry. He was Jerome.

9) Neptune’s 1978 high jump winner, Dennis Marshall, is listed as “Donis.” Donis? Really? That’s two Neptune errors. What does the NJSIAA have against Neptune?

10) The 2019 pole vault winner Liam Landau of Pascack Hills is listed as “Liam Landua.”

Ajani Dwyer ran 6.65 and 20.66 Friday to advance to the 60-meter-dash and 200-meter dash finals at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis.

Dwyer, a Penn State freshman from Washington Township, is 5th-fastest into the 60-meter dash finals but just 3-100ths of a second out of 1st. His 200 qualifier was 1-100th-of-a-second off his lifetime-best 20.65 from last month at the Ott Center and 4th-fastest in the trials.

The 60 final is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the 200 final at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fall Creek Pavillion at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds.

Some other highlights from Friday’s various conference meets:

√ Sincere Rhea from St. Augustine, a senior at Texas Tech, ran within 5-100ths of a second of his PR of 7.64 and placed 2nd in his heat to advance automatically to the 60-meter hurdles final on Sunday at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock.

√  La Salle sophomore Helene Usher from Haddonfield ran 16:47.35 for 3rd in the Atlantic 10 5,000-meter run.

√ Austin Gabay from Cinnaminson, a senior at Butler, recorded an auto qualifier into the mile final at the Big East Championships in Chicago. Gabay ran 4:08.71.

√  Rutgers freshman Eric Foster from Willingboro PR’d with an 8.08 in the hurdles trials at the Big Ten meet. That’s No. 8 in Rutgers history.

√  Haddonfield graduate Allison Colflesh, a junior at Richmond, ran a PR 2:15.60 and advanced to the 800 final at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Virginia Beach.

√  Washington Township graduate Jayden Greene and Timber Creek’s Josh Thaler, both seniors at St. Joe’s, advanced to the A-10 800 final, Greene with a 1:55.71 large-Q and Thaler with a 1:53.83 small-Q.

√ UConn junior Jaia James of Winslow Township matched her PR of 7.55 from earlier this month and posted the 3rd-fastest time in the 60 trials at the Big East meet and came back and ran a PR 24.39 to advance in the 200.

√ Kingsway’s Kyle Rakitis, a Rutgers sophomore, ran 4:11.62 in the Big Ten mile trials, about half a second off his PR.

√ Cherry Hill East graduate Alexis Tepper, a UMBC sophomore, PR’d at 4:57.08 for 5th place in the mile at the America East meet at Boston University. That’s No. 5 in school history. She also led off the 2nd-place 4-by-8, which ran 9:12.63 and anchored the 5th-place DMR, which ran 11:51.22

√ Eastern graduate A.J. Brooks, a Monmouth junior, PR’d in the long jump for 4th at the Coastal Athletic Association meet in Virginia Beach and ran 8.14 – within 2-100ths of his hurdles PR – for 6th in the 60-meter highs.

√ Monmouth senior Meredith Updike from Cinnaminson ran a hurdles PR of 8.79 for 4th in the CAA meet.

Deptford senior Marcus Hood became the 5th South Jersey pole vaulter to clear 15-6 indoors Wednesday in Toms River.

No series information available because the Bubble and their results platform are a joke, but Hood cleared 15-6 at the final South Jersey Track Coaches Assocation meet.

That equals No. 13 in state history indoors and No. 6 on the combined South Jersey indoor-outdoor list. Six of the top nine pole vaulters in South Jersey are from Gloucester County.

Hood’s 15-6 equals No. 3 in South Jersey indoor history, behind Delsea’s Marco Morales [16-0 in 2020] and Oakcrest’s Ryan Merlino [16-0 last year]. Delsea’s Nico Morales cleared 15-7 outdoors, so Hood equalled No. 4 all-time indoor or outdoor in South Jersey history.

According to his MileSplit profile, Hood didn’t vault as a freshman, cleared 10-0 indoors as a sophomore and then 11-6 outdoors and then 13-0 last year as a junior indoors and 15-3 outdoors.

This was his 5th meet over at least 15 feet this year with five other meets at 14-6 or higher.

Hood placed 6th in the 55-meter hurdles at Group 3 sectionals but didn’t vault, so he won’t be vaulting at the Meet of Champions on Sunday at Ocean Breeze. But he will be eligible for Easterns a week from Tuesday at the Armory or either of the two national meets – Armory Nationals in New York or THE TRACK Nationals in Boston, both the weekend of March 13-16.

Deptford junior Mason Henry placed 2nd at the Bubble Wednesday at 13-0, and senior Tiburcio Torres was 3rd at 12-0.
