Sprint team leads Audubon girls to first title ever at Woodbury Relays!!!!!

Junior Lamya Young, freshman Emily McGrath and seniors Sierra Gaines and Bailie Rizzo teamed up to win  the 400- and 800-meter relays, and the Audubon girls sprinted their way to the Woodbury Relays Group 1 title Saturday.

It was the Green Wave’s first Woodbury Relays championship in school history, outscoring second-place Paulsboro 44-34, with Schalick — the three-time defending champion — third with 27 points. Paulsboro hasn’t won since 1995.

Young, McGrath, Gaines and Rizzo won the 400-meter relay in 51.29 and the 800-meter relay in 1:45.80.

Rizzo, Young and McGrath teamed up with sophomore Alivia Stocklin to place second in the sprint medley in 4:27.55, and McGrath joined freshman Sarah Parr, junior Jacqueline Stocklin and senior Rachel Russell to win the shuttle hurdles in 1:11.85.

Audubon also placed second in the 3,200-meter relay, with the team of junior Giavanna Amariles, senior Alesky Kilvington, junior Caitlyn Clarke and freshman Emma Myers running 10:46.96.

Audubon’s 1:45.80 is fastest this year by a New Jersey Group 1 school, according to the Milesplit database, and actually fastest since Penns Grove ran 1:43.53 at Woodbury in 2014. The 51.29 is third-fastest by a New Jersey Group 1 school.

Audubon already ranks No. 2 in South Jersey and No. 4 in the state in the SMR with its 4:23.78 from the Jim Camburn Relays earlier this month. The 1:11.85 is No. 2 in South Jersey this year among Group 1 schools in the shuttles, just 1-100th of a second behind Pennsville, which ran 1:11.84 at Woodbury. It’s also No. 3 in the state.

The 3,200-meter relay time is No. 8 in the state this year in Group 1 and No. 3 in South Jersey,.

The 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 times are school records.

Ocean City graduate Steve Jernee breaks his own Stockton javelin record on final-throw bomb at Widener!!!!!

Stockton University freshman Steve Jernee extended his school record in the javelin to 205-7 this past weekend at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa.

Jernee threw 205-7 on his final attempt of the day, which also moved him past Christian Pavlovich of Messiah College and into first.

Going into the final set of throws, Jernee was in the lead with a throw of 200-2 on his second throw, and Pavlovich, a senior at the Grantham, Pa., school, was in second with a 197-4.

But Pavlovich took the lead with a 203-6 on his final throw. Moments later, on the final throw of the competition, Jernee reclaimed the lead and extended the Stockton school record with his 205-7.

Jernee had set the Stockton record with a throw of 204-4 at his first collegiate meet, the Stockton Invitational in Galloway on March 31. That broke the existing record of 203-2 set at the 2013 NJAC meet at Rowan by Jack Stephenson, another Ocean City graduate.

Jernee’s 205-7 ranks ninth-best in NCAA Division 3, according to the Direct Athletics database, and it’s No. 1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. He’s also the No. 1 freshman nationally, eight inches ahead of Luke Ballard of Birmingham-Southern, who threw 204-11 at the Southern Athletic Association Outdoor Championships in Sewanee, Ga., this past weekend.

Jernee’s PR is his 209-4 from last year’s Meet of Champions. That was his only meet in high school where he hit 190 feet.

Oakcrest’s Brielle Smith shatters 150-foot plateau, records #4 javelin throw in South Jersey history!!!!!

Oakcrest junior Brielle Smith won the javelin Saturday at the Woodbury Relays and moved into the No. 4 spot in South Jersey history and the No. 1 spot on the 2018 New Jersey javelin list.

Smith improved her PR from 145-0 at last year’s Rowan Invitational to 150-7 at Woodbury. Her throw is the best by a South Jersey girl in six years. She came within 21 inches of the Atlantic County record of 152-4, set in 2009 by Jill Shanner of Egg Harbor Township.

Smith’s throw is also No. 7 in New Jersey history and No. 4 in the U.S. this year. She broke the New Jersey junior class record of 146-5 set in 2003 by Amanda Harmata of Raritan at nationals in Raleigh, N.C., and the South Jersey junior class record of 143-4 set in 2011 by Maria Jimenez of Vineland at Group 4 sectionals.

Here’s the all-time South Jersey list, with the new implement (which went into use in 2002):

Clayton boys run fastest time in N.J. Group 1 this year in the 800-meter relay!!!!!

The Clayton quartet of juniors Thomas Hampton and Hilton Smith and freshmen Dominick Bishop and TerMeir Hill won the 800-meter relay at the Woodbury Relays Saturday in 1:31.42, fastest this year by a New Jersey Group 1 school.

Clayton broke the school record of 1:31.83 set last weekend at the Bridgeton Relays. Before this spring, Clayton had never broken 1:32.

The previous-fastest time by a Group 1 school in New Jersey this year was Abraham Clark’s 1:31.70 last weekend at the East Brunswick Invitational.

The fastest time ever run by a South Jersey Group 1 school is 1:30.25 by Penns Grove in 2015, also at the Woodbury Relays.

Hill also won the long jump with a personal-best 21-11 3/4.

Clayton also placed third in the 400-meter relay [44.78] and fifth in the shuttle hurdles and finished tied for fourth in team scoring in Group 1, behind only team champion Bishop Eustace [32] and Pitman and Schalick [19 each].

Penn Relays relays acceptance are in, and 10 S.J. schools are headed to Franklin Field for 4×8’s!!!!!

South Jersey will be well represented in the 3,200-meter relays next weekend at the Penn Relays.

Six boys teams and four girls teams will be racing for spots in the Championship of America race. The Penn Relays announced the high school relay acceptances on Monday.

Teams had until midnight Sunday to post qualifying times. Penn accepts the top 35 entries in both large-school and small-school divisions.

The 124th annual Penn Relays is scheduled for April 26-28 at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in West Philadelphia.

The girls 4-by-800s are scheduled for that Thursday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. and the Championship of America race, which will include the 12 fastest teams from the four races, goes off at 1:05 p.m. Friday.

The boys 4-by-800s are scheduled for Friday morning starting at 9:20 a.m. and the Championship of America race is 4:05 p.m. Saturday.

The list of qualifiers includes a lot of familiar names — Haddonfield, Seneca and Lenape seem to always race at Penn. But for Burlington Township, this will be the first visit for an invitational relay in school history.

No South Jersey schools made the distance medley fields.

Here’s who’s racing the 4x8s, along with their qualifying time:

Boys 3,200-Meter Relays
Large-School
Rancocas Valley [7:57.28 indoors]
Kingsway [8:03.11 indoors]

Seneca girls run likely Penn 4×8 qualifier at inaugural Lenape Invitational!!!!!

The Lenape girls results are finally available, and it looks like Seneca’s 3,200-meter relay team ran a likely Penn qualifier in winning the meet at the inaugural meet in Mount Laurel.

Seneca ran 9:32.10, fastest in South Jersey this year, to win the event. Although the Penn qualifiers haven’t been released yet, they should be any minute, and the 9:32 should be good enough to get the Golden Eagles into the Penn.

Carley Tool led off for Seneca with a 2:26, followed by Kayla Hay (2:22), Grayce Heinemann (2:20) and Sydny Warner (2:20).

The 124th annual Penn Relays is scheduled for April 26-28 at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in West Philadelphia.

The four girls 4-by-800s are scheduled for that Thursday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. and the Championship of America race, which will include the 12 fastest teams from the four races, goes off at 1:05 p.m. Friday.

For Seneca, this is the 10th time in the last 11 years they’ve gone under 10 minutes in the 4-by-8, which is a remarkable record of consistency for coach Karen O’Neil’s middle-distance crew.

It’s also the fourth straight year they’ve gone under 9:40.

Eastern HS grad Jeffrey Jon Tucker shatters 36-year-old Rowan high jump record with PR clearance at Moravian!!!

Rowan senior Jeffrey Jon Tucker broke a 36-year-old Rowan University high jump record Saturday, clearing 7-1 1/2 at the Coach Pollard Invitational at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

Tucker, who set his previous PR of 7-0 1/2 at a meet in Winston-Salem, N.C., in February of 2015, broke the school record of 7-0 3/4 set by Princeton High graduate Pete Sharpless in 1982, when the school was known as Glassboro State. He also broke the meet record of 6-11 3/4 set in 2014 by Adeolu Adesida of nearby Lehigh.

His previous outdoor PR was 6-11 1/2 in April of 2016 at a meet in Baltimore.

Tucker, a graduate of Eastern High School, cleared 6-6 1/2 and 6-8 1/2 on his first attempts. Tucker and senior teammate Harrison Escoffery were the only jumpers over 6-8 1/2.

Tucker needed all three attempts to clear 6-10 1/2 but earned the win when Escoffery missed three tries at 6-10 1/2.

Tucker then had the bar moved up to 7-1 1/2 and cleared it on his first attempt, breaking the school and meet records. He took two attempts at 7-2 1/2 before calling it a day and passing on his final try.

The clearance moves Tucker into the No. 23 spot on the 2018 U.S. list. The South Jersey alumni record of 7-5 3/4 was set in 1989 by Delran graduate Darren Burton in Ylivieska, Finland.

Tucker is a six-time All-America in the high jump and long jump.

Camden Catholic runs S.J. #1 time in 3,200-meter relay at TCNJ Invitational!!!!!

Camden Catholic’s 3,200-meter relay team ran a South Jersey No. 1 8:02.65 for a hopeful Penn Relays qualifier Saturday at the College of New Jersey High School Invitational.

Camden Catholic won the race by nearly 10 seconds over Jackson Memorial. Only Voorhees, with a 7:59.72 at the Holmdel Twilight Meet last week, and Westfield, with an 8:02.00 at the Husky Relays Saturday at Matawan, have run faster this year among New Jersey schools.

Ray Derman led off with a 2:01 split and was followed by Denny Kelly (2:01), Richie Castaneda (1:59) and Matt Coffey (1:58) for the Irish.

There is no set time to qualify for Penn. The top 35 small schools and top 35 large schools are accepted, and the top 12 overall times advance to the Championship of America race. Camden Catholic, with a male enrollment below 525, would be contending for a spot in two-race small-school field.

The four 4-by-800s are scheduled for Friday morning starting at 9:20 a.m. and the Championship of America race is 4:05 p.m. Saturday. The 123rd annual Penn Relays is scheduled for April 26-28 at Franklin Field in West Philadelphia.

The Penn Relays distance medley and 3,200-meter relay qualifiers will be announced Monday morning.
