Senior Scott Hubbard placed second overall and senior Tyler Wells and junior Joseph Gaspari also placed in the top 14 and Audubon raced to its first state cross country title ever Saturday at Holmdel County Park.

Audubon outscored 2nd-place Kinnelon, 76-100, a week after outscoring Haddon Township 35-56 to win the South Jersey Group 1 title. Haddon Township placed 3rd Saturday with 134 points to advance to the Meet of Champions on the same course next weekend.

Hubbard ran 17:09 over the hilly Holmdel 5,000-meter course, finishing behind only Colin Riley, a junior at Jonathan Dayton in Springfield, Union County. Wells ran 10th in 17:40 and Gaspari 14th in 17:53.

Audubon placed three ahead of Kinnelon’s second runner and averaged 17:57 at Holmdel County Park.

Sophomore Aiden Williams and senior Clifford Gilmore finished together in 18:33 for the Green Wave, Williams credited with 29th place and Gilmore 30 (25 and 26 as far as team points). Senior Aaryn Myers and freshman Leo Davis also raced for Audubon.

Audubon’s best previous finish at states was 2nd place in 1978, when the Green Wave finished behind Bernards by a 59-111 score. That team was led by Ed Wickersham, who placed 7th at states in 17:00 at Holmdel.

Audubon also had top-5 finishes in 1987, 1988 and 2019. They finished 4th in 1988, 5th in 1988 and 5th in 2019, the last time a state meet was held.

This is the third straight meet a Colonial Conference school has won the state Group 1 title. Haddon Township won in 2018 and 2019. Township also won in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Including titles by Pennsville in 2006 and Haddon Heights in 2007, South Jersey schools have won 10 of the last 15 Group 1 championships.

Also in the top 20 were Buena senior Kayden Platania [12th in 17:49], Haddon Township senior Ethan Bergmann [13th in 17:53] and Wildwood sophomore Jorge Cruz Valle [20th in 18:14].

Northern Burlington’s Liliah Gordon became the 3rd-fastest Burlington County freshman ever at Holmdel Saturday morning with a fast 2nd-place finish in the state Group 3 meet.

Gordon covered the challenging 5,000-meter course at Holmdel County Park in 18:44, behind only Colts Neck senior Lilly Shapiro, who ran 17:59.

Gordon ran 19:00 at Shore Coaches in her only previous race at Holmdel. The only South Jersey freshmen to run faster in the last 20 years are Briana Gess of Haddonfield in 2013 [17:45], Alyssa Aldridge of Mainland in 2014 [18:22], Grace Yoon of Cherry Hill East in 2016 [18:28] and Shawnee’s Casey Doyle in 2007 [18:39].

Her time is fastest by a Burlington County girl at Holmdel since Megan Lacy of Cherokee ran 17:55 in 2010.

The fastest previous time by a Northern Burlington girl at Holmdel was Colleen Sunderland’s 19:20 in 1994.

With a top-10 finish, Gordon qualified for the Meet of Champions next Saturday on the same course. She has placed either first or second in every race she’s entered this year.

Mainland freshman Sofia Day finished 6th in 19:04, making her the second-fastest girl in Mainland history behind Alyssa Aldridge, whose fastest Holmdel time was 17:55. Mainland placed 6th overall with 218 points.

Also in the top 10 was Highland junior Grace Wassell, who ran 19:08, a Holmdel PR .

Highland junior Abby Waddington also broke 20 minutes, taking 14th place in 19:53.

This is the 46th year the New Jersey state XC championships will be held at Holmdel County Park and the 44th year the race has been held at 5,000 meters.

The races were held over 3.0 miles in 1976 and 1977, and the South Jersey course record on the old course was 15:24, which Haddon Township’s Jeff Lane ran at the 1976 state Group 2 meet. Gateway’s Mike Mantini was next-fastest with a 15:27 at the 1977 Meet of Champions.

Did you know that the first three years Holmdel was used for XC the Bowl was run in reverse? Imagine a counter-clockwise Bowl?

So 1979 the first year the current layout was used, and obviously the course runs much faster these days than it did back then. In fact, 35 of the 54 sub-16 times have been run since 2010?

But it’s still fun to compare times!

So with states coming up on Saturday and the Meet of Champions a week away, here’s our updated all-time Holmdel South Jersey performance list. I did include 1978 times, even though the course was so different, just for the same of comparison.

This is my attempt at an all-time list going down to 16:30 for guys and 19:30 for girls, so that’s more than 700 total performances, and there are bound to be some omissions and errors. If your name is missing or you see anybody else missing or listed incorrectly, drop me a note in the comments section and I’ll get that fixed.

Rancocas Valley graduate Erika Kemp continued her outstanding year on the roads with a 3rd-place finish in the USATF National 5K Championships on Sunday.

Kemp, racing for the Boston Athletic Association, ran 15:46 at the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K, which also served as the national 5K championship, behind only Weini Kelati, who won in 15:18, and Grace Barnett taking second in 15:45.

Her time is No. 32 in the world this year for a road 5,000, according to the IAAF rankings and is one second off her road PR of 15:45, which she ran in Boston in April 2019.

With the 3rd-place finish, Kemp received 10 USATF Running Circuit points, giving her 56 1/2 with one event remaining, the U.S. Half Marathon Championships , on Dec. 5 in Hardeeville, S.C.. Emily Durgin (49) and Makena Morley (47 1/2) have the next-most points.

A total of $500,000 in prize money goes to the top point male and female point winners at the end of the season. Points are distributed for the top 10 finishers (15, 12, 10, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1], so presumably Kemp would clinch the title by placing in the top three in Hardeeville, because that would give her a minimum of 66 1/2 points and the most Durgin could finish with would be 64 if she wins. That will be her first lifetime half-marathon.

Kemp has been running very consistently this year at a variety of distances that show her tremendous range.

On the track, she ran 4:16.41 for 1,500 meters in New York in May and 15:10.10 for 5,000 meters in Attleboro, Mass., outside Boston, in May, and on the roads in addition to her 15:46 she ran 32:18 for 10K in Northport, N.Y., in September, 50:10 for 15K in Jacksonville in March, 1:06.20 for 20K in New Haven in September and 1:24.01 for 25K in Grand Rapids, Mich., in October.

The Stockton University women’s cross country team won the NJAC title recently, led by three South Jersey alums – senior Jessie Klenk of Sterling, sophomore Kiersten Clem of Eastern and senior Jamie Wun of Moorestown.

Klenk ran an all-course PR of 23:49 over 6,000 meters on Stockton’s home course in Galloway Township to place 2nd, Clem ran a PR 24:07 for 6th place and Wun ran 24:37 for 9th. 

Stockton’s 5th runner was freshman Abigail Webb of Highland, who took 12th place with a 24:43, also an all-course PR for her.

Stockton edged The College of New Jersey 39-41 to win its second New Jersey Athletic Conference title and first since 2016.

TCNJ led 23-27 after four runners, but Webb was the key, finishing 21 seconds and six spots ahead of TCNJ’s fifth runner. Webb ran track at Highland but never ran cross country until she got to Stockton.

Rowan placed third with 71 points with five South Jersey high school alums scoring.

Senior Lyndsay Boyd of Pitman placed 4th in 24:00, sophomore Sha’Lynn Clarke of Glassboro ran 24:45 for 13th, freshman Anna Sasse of Williamstown was 15th in 24:49, junior Carley Tool from Seneca was 17th in 24:57 and Cinnaminson grad Madison Edwards, a junior, placed 22nd in 25:12.

Grace Wassell had the race of her life Saturday, not only winning her third straight sectional title but running the 2nd-fastest time ever at DREAM Park in Logan Township and setting an all-course 5,000-meter.

Wassell, a Highland junior, won the South Jersey Group 3 sectional race, outracing Clearview junior Abby Waddington and Toms River South senior Lily Oliver with the three-fastest times of the day. Wassell ran 18:05, Waddington 18:08 and Oliver 18:16. They’re the 2nd- and 3rd-fastest times in course history, behind only the 17:52 run by Shawnee’s Isabella Turner at the 2018 South Jersey Shootout.

As a freshman in the fall of 2019, Wassell won the South Jersey Group 3 title by 28 seconds over Alex Palmieri of Ocean City with an 18:54 at Delsea. Last year, she won Group 3 by five seconds over Oliver at DREAM Park. Her fastest previous 5,000 on any course was an 18:14 at Cumberland Regional when she won the Tri-County Championship last month.

Wassell became the 11th girl to win three straight South Jersey sectional XC titles and the first from Camden County in 36 years, since Sterling’s Mindy Rowand won SJ-3 in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

She placed 10th at states as a sophomore. There was no state championship meet last fall.

Next year, Wassell will have a chance to become the fifth quad winner in South Jersey history and the 12th in state history. No girl has ever won three straight Group 3 titles in South Jersey.

Although it’s an inexact science comparing times on different courses, Wassell and Waddington posted the 2nd- and 3rd-fastest times from all the sectional races Saturday behind only Florida commit Angelina Perez of Lakeland, who won her third straight North Jersey Section 1 Group 2 title in 16:54.

Wassell’s time was the fastest at South Jersey sectionals in any race since 2016 at Delsea, when Mainland’s Alyssa Aldridge won SJ-3 in 17:41, Haddonfield’s Briana Gess won SJ-2 in 18:02 and Cherry Hill East’s Sarah Pierce also ran 18:05.

Let’s take a look at all the girls in state history who’ve won three consecutive sectional titles! It’s quite a list!

Camden Catholic senior Billy Clewell ran an unpressed 15:36 and won the Bob Kiessling Invitational by 175 meters Saturday at DREAM Park in Logan Township.

The Kiessling race is for non-public schools in conjunction with sectionals but does not serve as a qualifying meet for Parochial A and Parochial B states.

At the time he ran early Saturday, Clewell’s time was 2nd-fastest in course history, behind only Ethan Wechsler’s course record of 15:12 from the 2019 Olympic Conference Championships. With perfect conditions for sectionals, six runners ran faster, but Clewell’s time remains No. 8 in course history.

Clewell finished 37 seconds ahead of Simon Donovan, a junior at Germantown Friends. Germantown Friends went 2-3-5-6-8 and won the team title 24-60 over Bishop Eustace. There was no meet last year, but Germantown Friends also won in 2019. 

Clewell is the third Camden Catholic runner to win the Kiessling race, formerly the Knights of Columbus Invitational. Kyle Kirk won in 2012 and 2013 and Richard Castañeda won it in 2017. 

Other South Jersey runners in the top 10 were Bishop Eustace senior Anthony Faust [4th in 16:42], Paul VI junior Joseph Wigginton [7th in 17:03], Paul VI sophomore Will Mrozinski [9th in 17:08]

Junior Abby Waddington, sophomore Margaret Wisniewski and junior Abby Kotran all finished in the top 10 to Saturday to lead the Clearview girls to the first sectional XC title in school history.

Overall winner Grace Wassell, a junior at Highland, ran 18:05 over 5,000 meters at DREAM Park in Logan Township and won her third straight individual title – more on her incredible achievement soon.

For Clearview, Waddington ran 18:08 for 2nd place, Wisniewski 19:45 for 7th and Kotran 19:59 for 9th as Clearview finished three points ahead of both Mainland Regional and Highland in the closest three-way finish ever in a South Jersey sectional.

Wassell and Waddington ran the two-fastest times of the day and the No. 2 and No. 3 times in course history behind Isabella Turner’s course record of 17:52, set at the 2018 South Jersey Shootout.

Clearview scored 70 points to 73 for Mainland and Highland.  The closest previous three-way finish was seven points. It happened twice, both in Group 1, and incredibly with all three teams finishing with the exact same point totals.

In 1981, Audubon and Manchester Township each scored 56 points, with Audubon winning on a 6th-runner tiebreaker, and Wildwood was third with 63. And in 1997, Haddonfield and Haddon Township each scored 56, Haddonfield winning on a 6th-runner tiebreaker, and Maple Shade was third with 63 points. 

Both years 56-56-63. What are the odds of that?

Also scoring for the Pioneers were sophomore Allison Roes [14th in 20:41] and sophomore Rachel Jones [43rd in 23:16]. Sophomore Lillian Nolan and Anna Hagerman also raced for Clearview.

Lily Oliver of Toms River South placed 3rd in 18:16, followed by Mainland Regional sophomore Sofia Day [4th in 18:35], Highland senior Princess Nwoga [5th in 19:14], Mainland sophomore Gillian Lovett [6th in 19:22], Toms River South senior Taylor Guthrie [8th in 19:55] and Highland senior Vanessa Marinero [10th in 20:16].

Joining Clearview, Mainland and Highland at states next Saturday at Holmdel will be Ocean City [4th with 87 points] and Toms River South [5th with 91]. 

Clearview’s previous best finish was second place in South Jersey Group 4 in 2014.

Three Haddonfield runners ran 15:34 or faster and Haddonfield won its state-record 18th consecutive sectional XC title in record fashion.

The sectional title is Haddonfield’s state-record 40th overall.

Senior Seth Clevenger ran 15:19 to win the South Jersey Group 2 race at DREAM Park in Logan Township, junior George Andrus ran 15:31 for 3rd and senior Tobias Janssen finished in 15:43 for 4th.

All seven of Haddonfield’s runners ran 16:45 or faster. The Bulldogs’ two other scorers were junior Robert DiMedio [10th in 16:16] and senior Andrew Sullivan [14th in 16:40]. They were backed up by juniors Donald Jellig [16th in 16:43] and Ian Romea [17th in 16:45].

Haddonfield finished with a 28-66 margin of victory over Cinnaminson, which placed second with six juniors and a sophomore and averaged 16:42.

Haddon Heights [79], Manchester Township [107] and Red Creek [158] also earned invites to next Saturday’s state championships at Holmdel.

Haddonfield’s five scorers averaged 15:52, destroying the course record of 16:00 set by Cherokee at the 2019 Olympic Conference Championships.

Clevenger’s 15:19 was 3rd-fastest of all the races Saturday and 4th-fastest in course history.

Before its current 18-year streak began in 2004, Haddonfield won SJ-1 in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1997 and 1998, SJ-2 in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and SJ-3 in 1967.

The only time since 1999 that Haddonfield did not win a sectional title was 2003, when Cinnaminson’s Jon Anderson, Dan Reidenbaker and Steve Grabowski finished 1-3-4 and the Pirates recorded a 29-46 victory at Delsea in SJ-2. 

Other than that, Haddonfield has won either SJ-1 or SJ-2 24 of the last 25 years.

The rest of the top-10 was very fast.

Woodbury sophomore Peyton Shute ran 15:28 for 2nd to break up Haddonfield’s lead pack, West Deptford senior Jacob Cobb ran 15:46 for 5th, Colin Patterson of Haddon Heights was 6th in 15:55, Cinnaminson juniors Alex Boyko and Matt McCarron ran 16:13 and 16:16 for 7th and 8th and junior Jack Bolling of Haddon Heights was 9th in 16:16.

Juniors Patrick Ditmars and Conor Jacob both ran well under 16 minutes, placing 2nd and 3rd and leading Cherokee to its third straight sectional title and 11th overall.

Senior Kyle Rakitis ran 15:15 to become Kingsway’s first individual winner in seven years. That was the 2nd-fastest time of the day, behind Dennis Fortuna’s course-record 15:09 and 2nd-fastest in course history. It’s also his fastest 5,000 on any course. He ran 15:30 last month at Cumberland Regional.

The last Kingsway boy to win a sectional title was Noah Culbreath, who won S.J.-4 in 2013 and 2014. Kingsway’s only other individual winners were in Group 3 – Ozzie Huerta in 2005 and Tim Cooke in 2011.

Cherokee, racing without one of its top runners, injured Nick Kuenkel, still averaged 16:13 for its five scorers on the 5,000-meter course at DREAM Park in Logan Township – 4th-fastest in course history and second-fastest of the day – and packed its first five runners in 56 seconds to win the South Jersey Group 4 championship.

Ditmars took second in 15:43, a one-second all-course PR, and Jacob ran 15:52, a 38-second all-course PR.

Senior Bradley Popler placed 14th in 16:21, sophomore Robert Poplau 20th in 16:27 and senior Joseph Natoli 26th in 16:39 formed the rest of Cherokee’s top 5, and junior Thomas Bromley  and sophomore Andrew Free ran 17:14 and 17:24 for 38th and 43rd overall.

Cherokee previously won South Jersey Group 4 XC titles in 1998, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019 and 2020. This is the first time since 1998 through 2000 the Chiefs have won three straight.  

Cherokee held a slim 39-41 lead over Southern Regional after four runners before Natoli finished nine places ahead of Southern’s fifth runner.

Joining Cherokee and Southern representing South Jersey Group 4 at states next Saturday at Holmdel are Cherry Hill East [103], Kingsway [139] and Washington Township [141].

Also in the top 10 from South Jersey: Washington Township senior Chris Colavita [4th 15:54], Rancocas Valley senior Andre Faigal [5th 15:55], R.V. junior Ryan Smith [8th 16:02] and Lenape senior Jake Buniva [9th 16:05].
