Pleasantville’s Nia Ali ran the fastest 100-meter hurdles time in the world this year Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.

Ali, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2019 world champion, ran 12.44 to win the highs at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at Percy Beard Track on the University of Florida campus.

That’s her 7th-fastest time ever.

She edged Tonea Marshal, the runner-up to Ali at last year’s U.S. Championships in Eugene. Marshal’s 12.45 is No. 2 in the world this year.

In the trials, Marshal edged Ali, with both timed in 12.47 – Marshall was 12.466 and Ali 12.470. That was the 2nd-fastest time Ali has ever run that wasn’t in a final. She ran 12.43 in the semis at nationals in Eugene last summer.

Ali ranks 9th in world history with her 12.30 in Monaco this past July. That’s also No. 3 in U.S. history

Big day at the Moorestown Relays for Riverside senior Jamir Brown, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.34 and the long jump at 22-0.

Brown’s previous hurdles PR was a 14.66 as a sophomore competing for Delran when he placed 2nd at the state Group 2 meet at Franklin. He missed his long jump PR of 22-0 ¾ from last weekend’s Don Danser Relays at Rancocas Valley by less than an inch.

The 14.34 is fastest by a New Jersey Group 1 hurdler since 2019, when Palmyra’s Sam Aviles ran 14.07 at the Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.

It’s No. 3 so far this spring in South Jersey, behind Washington Township’s Yashahya Brown [14.12] and Williamstown’s Alexander Hollimon [14.25] from Fast Times at Cherokee on Saturday.

Brown’s 22-0 ¾ from last weekend is the top long jump in South Jersey this year.

Brown was the No. 2 sophomore intermediate hurdler in New Jersey at 54.52 from West Philly Nationals as a Delran sophomore, but he hasn’t run a 400IH since that race nearly two years ago.

Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer ran the 6th-fastest 100-meter dash in South Jersey history Saturday at Fast Times at Cherokee High.

Dwyer edge Robbinsville’s Maxim Rychkov by 2-100ths of a second, Dwyer in 10:48 and Rychkov in 10.50.

Dwyer was a 1st-time sprinter last spring but only competed in a handful of meets and missed sectionals, states and the Meet of Champions. He ran 10.60 to win the Gloucester County title in Deptford and also had a 200 best of 21.47.

Indoors, he ran a state-record 6.18 for 55 meters and a South Jersey-record 20.25 for 200 meters but again missed the end of the season with an injjury.

Three other sprinters ran sub-11 – Washington Township junior John Santos was 3rd in 10.91, Cherokee senior Ryan Bender 4th in 10.94 and Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown – the state hurdles record holder indoors – was 5th in 10.96.

There was no wind reading taken in his race, so some performance lists may not include his performance.

Dwyer’s time is No. 15 in state history and 1-100th of a second off the Gloucester County record of 10.47 set 15 years ago by Glassboro’s James Brown at the 2009 South Jersey Group 1 sectionals at Egg Harbor Township.

It’s fastest by a South Jersey sprinter in 14 years, since Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd ran 10.36 at the 2010 South Jersey Group 3 sectionals, also at Egg Harbor Township.

Bishop Eustace senior Shawn Brady threw a lifetime-best 57-0 ¼ in the shot put at Fast Times at Fast Times at Cherokee High Saturday morning.

Brady had a PR of 56-10 ¼ from his 4th-place finish at the indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze. His outdoor PR was 56-3 from the Don Danser Relays at Rancocas Valley last weekend.

Brady is the first 57-footer from Camden County in 12 years, since Timber Creek’s Quanzell Lambert threw 57-7 ¾ at the old Hall of Fame Relays at Maple Shade.

Brady opened with a 56-1 before hitting his 57-footer on his second attempt. He fouled on his 3rd and final throw.

Also over 50 feet were Delsea junior Jonathan Harris [53-11 ¼], Delsea senior Greg Masso [50-11 ¼], Timber Creek sophomore Roseby Lubintus [50-6] and Cinnaminson junior Victor Meira.

That’s an enormous PR for Lubintus, who came in with a lifetime-best 44-9 ¼ from a meet at Cherokee this past May. He didn’t compete indoors. Meira’s previous best was a 48-5 at the indoor state Group 2 met at the Bubble in February.

Woodbury senior Peyton Shute ran 9:12.13 and led five runners under 9:20 at the Cherokee Night of 3200s Friday night.

Nearly 500 runners raced in 21 sections, with more than three-quarters of them running PRs.

Shute was out in 4:42.23 for 1,600 meters and then came back in 4:29.91, closing in 2:14.98 and 67.83.

This was Shute’s 3,200 or two-mile since he ran a PR 9:05.99 at the indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze. He actually ran within a second of his outdoor PR of 9:11.11, which he set this past May at the Gloucester County Championships at Deptford.

Colts Neck junior Hunter Celkupa, who came in with a PR of 9:27.31 from the Shore Conference Championships at the Bubble in January, was 2nd in 9:15.27, followed by the Cherokee pair of seniors Nick Kuenkel [9:16.54] and Robert Poplau [PR 9:18.82]. Haddonfield junior Bennett Wright [17-second PR 9:19.81] also dipped under 9:20.

Other South Jersey runners in the top 20: Ocean City senior Matt Hoffman was 8th [9:27.16], Cherokee freshman Benjamin Realley 12th [PR 9:32.85], Cherokee junior Liam Tindall 13th [9:34.15], Cherokee sophomore Logan Bromley 15th [PR 9:36.40], Washington Township senior Daniel Torres 17th [PR 9:37.46] an Delsea sophomore Matthew Littlehales 19th [9:40.24].

As we wrote about last night, Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally was the fastest girl with a 10:18.93, the 2nd-fastest time ever by a South Jersey girl and fastest in 41 years.

Kylie Anicic ran the 4th-fastest 5,000 in NCAA Division 2 this year late Friday night in Southern California.

Anicic, a Kingsway graduate and senior at Edinboro, ran 16:14.07 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Stadium at Azusa Pacific University.

Her time is 8th-fastest ever by a South Jersey high school graduate.

Anicic’s previous 5,000 PR was a 16:25.97 in March of 2023 when she placed 6th at the NCAA Division 2 indoor championships in Virginia Beach. She broke the school record of 16:18.41 set by Stefanie Parsons at last year’s Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

Anicic has raced twice this spring and run huge PRs both times. She set a school record of 33:25.55 in the 10,000 two weeks ago in Raleigh, N.C. That remains the No. 1 time in NCAA Division 2 this year.

In addition to the 5,000 and 10,000 outdoors, Anicic holds Edinboro school records indoors at 3,000 meters [9:27.55] and 5,000 meters [16:25.97].

The official results do not list splits. Anicic finished 2nd in the race behind post-collegiate runner Layla Almasri, who ran 16:07.99.

Anicic is one of three women from Kingsway who have run sub 16:20. Chelsea Ley ran 16:12.62 at the 2012 Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., and Lori Townsend ran 16:17.67 at the 1995 Penn Relays.

Cinnaminson’s Austin Gabay ran the 4th-fastest 1,500 ever by a South Jersey runner Friday night at the Duke Invitational on his home track in Durham, N.C.

Gabay ran 3:40.73, the equivalent of a 3:58.39 full mile. After covering the first 300 in 43.53 – which is 58.04 pace for 400 meters – he ran his last three laps in 59.56, 59.54 and 58.10.

His previous 1,500 PR was a 3:42.94 in a meet at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., last April. The 3:40.73 is No. 3 on the all-time Duke list, behind only Olympian Bob Wheeler, who ran 3:39.0 in 1972, and Nick Dahl, who ran 3:39.10 in 2022.

Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally opened her outdoor season with the fastest time by a South Jersey two-miler in 41 years.

McNally, competing at the Cherokee Night of 3200s, ran 10:18.93, the fastest time by a South Jersey girl since legendary Michelle Rowen ran 10:12.8 on May 28, 1983, at the South Jersey Group 4 Championships at Toms River East.

Her time is No. 16 in state history and one of the fastest ever this early in a season. McNally ran 2:11.85 and 4:52.90 indoors. Her previous 3,200 or two-mile PR was 10:48.90 last June at the state Parochial A meet at Franklin.

McNally negative-split the race, out in 5:13.92 and coming back in 5:05.01, closing in 2:26.74 and 71.86.

McNally was competing in a mixed race in the 17th of 21 sections of 3,200s. She finished 2nd in her race to Joseph Calabrese, a freshman from Monsignor Farrell in Staten Island, N.Y. Calabrese ran a PR 10:13.32.

For record purposes, some statisticians might not include the performance because it came in a mixed race. From the Backstretch policy is to include any performances in a mixed race.

McNally broke the Camden County record of 10:28.6 set by Olympian Erin Donohue of Haddonfield at 2001 South Jersey Group 2 sectionals at Buena.

There wasn’t a clock at 3,000 meters, but since she closed in 71.86, if her last 200 was in about 35 or 36 seconds, she came through 3,000 meters in about 9:40, which would put her around 13th-fastest on the all-time South Jersey 3,000 alumni list.

Olympian Marielle Hall holds the official South Jersey 3,000 record of 9:40.23 from the 2010 Penn Relays.

The 2nd-place girl was Ocean City junior Maeve, who ran a lifetime-best 10:50.72 . Cherokee senior Kerry O’Day also ran sub-11, finishing 3rd among girls in 10:58.48.

West Deptford’s Jacob Cobb, a sophomore at Massachusts Institute of Technology, shattered his steeplechase PR Friday evening and moved into the all-time South Jersey top-10.

Cobb ran 9:12.63 and placed 6th at the Providence College Friar Invitational at Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field. His time is No. 7 in MIT history.

Cobb’s time is also No. 10 on the all-time South Jersey performance list, just behind 1952 Olympian Browning Ross of Woodbury, who remains the Gloucester County alumni steeplechase record holder 72 years after he ran 9:08.3 and placed 3rd at the 1952 U.S. Olympic Trials at L.A. Coliseum.

Cobb’s previous PR was a 9:24.26 last weekend in a meet in Amherst, Mass. Before this month, his steeple PR was 9:30.62 from last May in a meet on his home track in Cambridge, Mass.

Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo, a Penn junior, raced to another huge PR in the intermediate hurdles Friday evening in Gainesville.

Garozzo ran 57.22 at the Tom Jones Memorial and destroyed her own Penn Quaker school record of 57.97 that she just set two weeks ago in an earlier meet on the same Percy Beard Track at the University of Florida.

Before this spring, Garozzo had a PR of 59.76 from the 2022 Ivy League Championships in New Haven. She’s now PR’d in both her 400IH races this spring.

She bumped Harvard sophomore Chloe Fair for the top time in the Ivy this year. Fair ran 57.78 in Gainesville two weeks ago.

Her time is fastest by any Ivy League woman in seven years, since Harvard senior Jade Miller ran 56.41 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., in April 2017.

She’s now 5th-fastest in South Jersey history and 8th-fastest on the all-time New Jersey list, a list topped by the world record holder.

Garozzo has also PR’d in the 200 [24.42] and 100-meter hurdles [13.65] so far this spring. She’s No. 1 in the Ivy in both hurdles races and No. 9 in the 200.
